It’s amazing to see a beautiful 1968 Shelby Cobra Jet GT500 KR with so few miles on the odometer. Join us as we visit this pristine 428 Cobra Jet powered KR that’s been driven a mere 6806 miles since new… that’s only enough for 2 oil changes! It’s definitely a standout in The Brothers Collection.

I had a Red, 4 speed, KR from 1975 until 1981 and had to sell it because I had too many speeding tickets and lost my Drivers License for 2 years... I bought it for $5200 with 23,000 miles and sold it for $8500 with 36.000 miles. Today, it's worth over $150,000..

Carroll was the person who gave the
    68 500 the KR.
I was a dealer in Shelbys and heard him tell the story that he got word Chevrolet was going to use the KR on the newest Vette package, so Carroll called his patten lawyer asking him to find out if the KR had been registered by GM yet.
    Lawyer calls back saying NO.
Carroll tells him to get on it.
    The lawyer replies, okay Shel
    1st thing Monday morning.
It was Friday morning by this time.
Carroll's reply " If you wait till Monday, you won't have a job"
Carroll didn't like the 68 as much because Ford had loaded it down with too much fluff, making the car heavier and it had lost some of it's race ability.
My 1st intro to Shelby was in Texas when my older sister came home for a visit in her brand new 67 GT500
    427 dual 4v carbs, 4-speed trans.
    A beautiful ride.

That front end is the pinnacle of Mustang design. The hood lunging over the chrome bumper, the rectangular fog lights like fangs, the hood scoops like massive, mean nostrils, it’s just the whole business. One day, I want to get an old, clapped out Mustang, restore it, and then modify it. And I want a KR Front for it.

    Hail to the King, baby!
While a 1968 King Mustang might not be the prettiest Mustang, as muscle car royalties go, this is up there.
And 335bhp? Please! I've seen dyno tests of these stock 428CJ's hit over 450bhp at 6300 revs. So this was up there with the Yenko & Hemis of 1968 for sure.
Also, can't wait for your 250th episode! Hopefully, it's something super rare & special.

Especially since the 1968 428 Thunder Jet (T-Bird motor) was rated at 360 hp.
I agree, not one of the 1968 Mustangs were as good looking as any of the 67' or 69' Mustangs.
However, the 68' Cougar GT-E is a different story imho.

@@Johnnycdrums Don't let that "low" HP rating for the KR fool you. Ford de-rated that engine for insurance purposes to avoid a surcharge. That T-Bird 428 at 360HP was a "slug" that grandma would be comfortable driving. That Cougar "eliminator" was just Mercury's answer to the Boss 302! IMHO, the Boss 302 and Boss 429 (designed by Larry Shinoda) were the BEST LOOKING Mustangs, EVER, with the CLEAN side panels devoid of all doo-dads that were on the "other" Mustangs! I always wondered why the Shelby mustangs were slower through the 1/4 mile than regular mustangs when equipped with the same engine. I suppose it has something to so with how it was ordered (gear and options) , the diver testing it, the track where it was tested and the temperature, humidity and altitude where it was tested. 14.8? I have never heard of a CJ powered mustang that had times that bad if it was in good tune.

Does seem a bit slow. Some magazine road tests had it as low as 14.3 in the 1/4 mile, as I recall. A lot of the famed muscle cars ran in the 14s or even 15s.

muscle cars back then weren't that quick out of box but they left a lot on the table you could turn a 14.5 car into a 13.00 sec with some good modifications or quicker, newer cars are a lot harder to improve upon on, older carburetor engines if you changed cam lift you could modify the carb, can't do so with computer controlled Fi and spark unless you reprogram PCM simpler back then and the ones who were the saviest tuner won over the competition you had the to be the SMART guy, you weren't able to take car to a tuner like now it's a money thing now , that's is the one who has the most powerful engines

Dan Bouchard Yip agree with ya.... I know with headers and rejeting the carb wakes them.up for sure...

Most of the performance cars from the 60's were slow compared to today's performance cars. The power was there, suspension and tires weren't.

Bias ply tires. 3.50 rear gears. Any car would run a 14. 80

I thought the Cobra had more then 335 Hp?

289 Cobras had 306hp or 340 with 4 webers, 427 Cobras had 360hp with the 428 and 425 with the 427 (published figures).

The 429 super cobra jet was rated at 390 hp, arguably the best Ford engine ever made, and still only put out as much as a base level Chevy 427 or 440 Chrysler. High end 427s were rated at 425 hp, same as the HEMI's, yet Ford guys still think these Mustangs are better for some reason.

Johnny, they put some in Mustangs too, the "Boss 429s".

Boss-9 was 69/70, rated 375hp and used a "semi-hemi" head on the 385 series block (not FE like 427-428 etc.) and was ONLY in the Mustang Boss 429 model for retail customers (or over the counter).

As a mechanic, looking at ford engines always makes me cringe. Even back in the '60s they were packed with crap just as bad as modern cars. Camaros and Corvettes had more room to work on their big blocks than any ford ever did, hell, even the elephant HEMI in a 'Cuda had plenty of room under hood!

D C the 68 shelby was a open road car not a drag car, if they wanted good drag times a rear gear change is needed.
