I had to comment again. In 1970 I worked for a Ford dealer in Florida. I just bought a new 390 Mach 1 Mustang from my employer. A 1969 Boss 429 appeared on the lot with high oil usage and smoking badly. I went to the office and they took back my GT 390 for an even trade.. Subsequently I put the KK429 into a local speed shop. We determined the brass valve guides were shaped oval due to the canted valve side thrust. I had the brass valve guides nuralized in the machine shop and the motor retuned for max performance. Oil consumption stopped and my bad days with the Bow Tie guys was over. The GT390 would loose a 1/4 mile drag to the SS396/375 HP Chevelle by a half a car length every time. Switching to the newly tuned Boss 429 (KAR KRAFT 1820) solved the problem. I never again lost a race to a Chevy. We ran in the "A" stock class at that time. What fun days. After getting married with a new baby and getting military orders, I sold the car for 3000 and left for WestPac with the US Navy. All I have left is my wedding pictures with my wife and I riding around in the Boss. I drove the car coast to coast and cold get about 8 miles per gallon driving normally. Gas was 31 cents a gallon or so. What memories ! Thank You !
Cool Ford story thanks. I had a 67 GT390 I took into the Air Force with me. I ended up cutting it up and making a Street Stock stock car out of it. It was terrible on the short track, but the motor was fine. I built it to iirc 1968 Ford Muscle Parts catalog specs. I called it a baby 427 cause it was built like one. I didn't know squat about making a car turn left, but I could build a mean stock class motor by then. The 340s, 350s, and 383s couldn't touch it. Motor alone made that car fast. There was only one motor that could out drag that stang on the straights, and it was a 396 Chevell.
I come home from the hospital in my dad's 67 396/375 drop top with 4.11's in Stuttgart Germany. It didn't take long for him to grow tired of smoking everything on the auto bone from go to 100 but with those gears that's all she had. When we he was assigned back to the States he not only brought a new son but also a new 69 911 targa bought off the factory floor with only the test track miles all Porches must have on them to ensure there is truly "no substitute" before going to it's first lucky new owner.
Youre one of the lucky ones dude. I wouldnt sell a boss 429 no matter what. Know a guy who had a 70 boss 302 and 429. He said the 302 was a freaking wonder on the drag circuit. When he lost to someone which wasnt often he went and got his 429 and down they went. Never lost to anyone in his boss 429 with mickey thompson stickeys on the back. That beast would run 11.70s in the qarter. I saw his time slips.
@@tomwolak3362 Especially when you took off that hokey 735 cfm carb and put on an 850-950 cfm double pumper and headers. If you'd had the tires then that we have now, it would have been in the 10's. I raced in that era, and stock class was 7" wide slicks, max! Super Stock was 9". You wouldn't get away with the bigger carb in stock class, but in Super Stock, no problem.

Then again I have no idea what he went through getting this thing back together. That's why I could never get into restoration projects. I'll make it look clean, but I'm saving that money for repairs cuz I'm in it for the ride. To each his own. Plus such short gears make hard driving even harder on the parts so I can see why he's gentle.

To our younger friends watching, this is why cars from this era are called " muscle cars ". Todays cars are badass but it took a certain kind of someone to really run these beasts, drum brakes, poly glass tires, many with no power steering and big horsepower. I was born in 1964 and started driving in 1979, cars like these were everywhere for $700.00 to $1000.00. many of my friends are in the graveyard from driving these beasts. Thanks for the video. So true born in 66 the early 80"s every used car lot had one or two true late 60' early 70's muscle cars for under a grand. I ended up buying a 69 Camaro with a new paint job and black SS stripes for 2 grand in 84 . It was a 6cly though.

My first 2 cars, bought in 80+82 1970 Mercury Montego MX brougham with a 351 Cleveland out of a totalled Mach 1 and a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR 7 with a 351 Windsor. Both cars had hideaway headlights black interior, the Cougars was leather and could flat out haul the mail. Yup, those days are really missed.
@@markperry2827 The only car that engine came in from the factory was the 1969 Mach 1, and maybe, the 1970 Mach 1. The better engine was the 427 SOHC which were in the Cobra's and the GT-40.

Doug Reed it was technically not factory built. It was built by a company called Karcraft. (I believe it’s spelled with a K). They customized the engine bay in order to fit the big block Hemi engine.
if that's the stock exhaust, its just sic. I have never heard a car sound so good in all my 70 years. Yeow! I watched it several times and turned up the sound. Its just awesome!!!!!
If I remember right Ford didn't put a whole lot of exhaust on these from the factory. I think it was mostly just crimped "mufflers" which were more like glorified glass packs without the packing.
oldsguy49 - the exhaust is either aftermarket or the mufflers are blown out. Stock Boss 429’s were not this loud. This car also clearly has a bigger than stock cam. Stock Boss 429’s did not lope at idle.
Glad to see this 50 year old is being enjoyed and driven as designed. The big block brute has always been my dream Mustang when I was a kid and even as an old man, I love it's nastiness. I'd be tempted to drop a modern 6 speed in it and update the brakes, suspension, fuel system etc... but then it wouldn't be what this one is, a very rare machine.

I worked at Dearborn Assembly when that was built. I was the afternoon stick shift roll test driver. I got to drive more than a couple. The '69 cars were problematic, I worked a ton of overtime that year. not so much in 1970. The guy that showed me how to do that job had 1929 seniority and was leaving.

It's called the Boss for a reason. I believe there is an engine builder called Kassie? Who was getting 900+ hp out of the Boss 429 on pump gas 😲. Also back in 94 there was a showdown between gm and ford to prove who could build the fastest 1/4 mile car. Gm choose a Camaro and Ford a Mustang. First race Gm won because the Boss 429 Was having pushrod problems. Being hard to find parts for the 429 they came up with a solution. After that the Mustang destroyed the Camaro consistently. Myself whitnessed that Mustang do a burnout at a cruise years later. It was like watching a nitro funny car! I spoke with the owner and he said at that time the car had 850hp and next time I would see them the car would have 1200hp! The display of the Mustang noted it as the fastest street car in America at that time. And being raised near the Dragstrip, I had no reason to doubt them. I dont recall the 0-100 time they displayed, but I remember my Brother and I laughing and saying that it was incrediable. Dont mess with the Boss. TRUE BLUE BABY 💥👍✌

In late 1969 I walked into the local Ford dealership in Louisville Kentucky. Setting on the floor was a Candy Apple Red Boss 429 with the price of $5000 written on the windshield. I was there to purchase a new Red with gold strips Mach1. As much as I wanted the Boss 9. It didn't fit my budget so I drove home in my new 69 $2800 351 4V Mach 1. As years past and I started a family. The Mach 1 was traded for a family sedan. I always thought about that amazing Boss 429 with the large hood scoop, Boss 429 decals on each fender and that huge SOHC engine. But being young and not a fortune teller. Who would have known the value of that car today. I have to add. Maybe because it was my first new car. I have never owned another vehicle that I enjoyed as much as my Red 1969 Mach 1 which also fetches large prices for restored copies. 1969 was a great year for Mustang styling and performance. Thanks for sharing this surviver Boss 429 and putting us in the passenger seat.
Ralph Moore - Around 1974 I was at my local drag strip in my 1970 Mach 1 351. A guy came out in a Boss 429 and was running 12.0 - 12.1 ET’s which was REALLY fast at that time. His only mods were long tube headers, a big 3 barrel Holly carb and slicks. He was definitely the big dog that day amongst the street driven cars.

Remind me of my 1973 Montego GT it was specially ordered with the smaller 429 with the T-10 4 speed and 9-inch rear end. It also was a NASCAR tag chassis that never made it to any track but found plenty of use on the streets of Detroit City. Sad but true I ended up trading it in for a minivan in the late 1980s for my ever-growing family I now had. I wonder where that car is today I understand it's worth a a small fortune now For its rarity alone. It would be cool as hell if I could sit in behind the wheel one last time before I pass on from this life. It was cherry red with black interior it had the Mach 1 style ram Air hood scoops on it from the factory and it was a fastback. 15 inch Magnum style chrome Wheels the same style that's on this Boss 429 mustang in this video.
In the late 70s and early 80s, someone apparently gathered all the 1969 Boss 429 Mustangs and put them in barns. Every one I discover that exists today seems to have been found in a barn. It is fantastic to see this car actually driven! Often, all we can get out of owners is a cold start inside a garage. To see one out in the streets and with a foot pushing down on the gas pedal is astonishing. Nice car and thanks for sharing!
That may be the most impressive ride along for a muscle car that I have seen. The torque to simply break traction with the 4 speed in 1-2 was fun to watch. Thank you for the share!
What a cool car you got to see and ride in! My first car (in 1973) was a 1970 Mach 1 351 and my best friend had a 1969 Mach 1 428 CJ. We both used to street race a little (who didn’t?) and I did a little bracket racing with mine. I say this only to show that I was around a lot of these cars back in the 1970’s and I can say that the car you rode in is not 100% stock. Specifically the exhaust is louder than stock and a bigger cam has been installed. The stock cam in the Boss 429 was very small (for the CI) and did not lope like this car does. The stock Boss 429 engines were notoriously weak torque wise (due to the too large intake ports and the tiny cam). Putting in a bigger cam really woke those engines up. Your noting that the car had a lot of torque is further evidence that a longer duration cam was installed in this car. I heard the owner say that Boss 429’s made “600 HP”. This is baloney. Perhaps a full race NASCAR Boss 429 made that kind of power but not the street version. They were under rated at 375 by perhaps 50 or so HP. Boss 429 engines really like to rev to take advantage of the huge intake ports. The owner of this car (understandably) kept the RPM’s way down. I doubt he ever went much over 4000 RPM..
you are correct, in BONE STOCK configuration the B9 probably made LESS HP than the 428 CJ. It certainly was a full half second SLOWER than a 428 CJ which caused serious alarm at Ford but not enough alarm for them do put a better cam and carb on for 1970. The warranty department won the war. So you had an engine that had 700hp potential but in stock form would have barely put out 400.

Just like the '69 Roadrunner my Uncle gave my brother and I with a warmed up 440 in it. Has a newer radio and whatnot that we've yet to use in the month we've had her now simply because the engine sound is music in its own sense. Nothing beats that beautiful sound of turning on to a road and just mashing the GO pedal to the floor and hearing the car come to life :D
Exactly....any of my cars with a cammed up Ford....289, 429 etc....never even had a radio,,,,the engine was like music even when cruisin down the highway.
I drove my 70 mustang daily for nine years. There was something about that car, it was special. It was mean, but so easy to control. Rev matching was smooth and seamless and oh with the sound that poured out of the pipes... Pure heaven. It was just a blast to drive, great memories. Best part of my youth by far. Second Mustang was a 68 California Special, it was very cool, but an Automatic, just not the same.
I'm a Chevy guy, but the'69 Mustang is my favorite Ford. A local guy that I kinda knew was a Mopar Hemi fanatic. He would buy every Hemi car he could find, swap the engine to a 383 or 440 and sell the car. He also bought a new Boss 429 Mustang, I'm not sure which year, and he took me and my friend for a ride and it was awesome. He didn't keep it long and it's the only Boss 429 I ever saw.
I remember the bottom portion of the air cleaner had normally open air port doors . So that when you closed the ram-air scoop vacuum was over ridden and the warm air port doors opened . A very COOL Ford .
Brings back memories of my 69 428 CJ. Blew up the original motor and replaced it with an all aluminum 430 grand national. No body on the street ever came close to beating it. It was wearing a holley 1050 dominator and would get about 5 gallons to the mile with your foot on the floor. Top speed was about 147.
1969 Mustang isn’t just the most beautiful muscle car, not just the most beautiful Ford. It is, in my opinion, the single most beautiful car ever to come off any production line from any car company in the entire world. Add to it that big block rip and you’ve got an extremely desirable experience
Chrysler hemi is a turd on the street as well. The boss was insanely choked down, tiny 735 Holley , boss 302 had a 780 for fuck sakes. The worst ex manifolds of any v8 muscle car, thanks to the shock towers. And a wimpy camshaft. Chrysler hemi had great manifolds and two carbs, and was still a mutt that often would lose to a shotgun. NOTHING will outrun a boss9 when it’s uncorked. I don’t care what brand.
Also, the cylinder head is made for a 500”+ engine, not a wimsy 429. Ford choked her so bad for no reason, they could have easily used the 3.85 crank and had a 460 boss. But chose not to.
I don't know what planet you guys are on but a stock Boss 429 wouldn't fall out of a tree. Potentially they could have been the baddest musclecar built. Ford castrated this motor. A 426 Hemi was finicky but in a sharp state of tune (fresh plugs, optimal timing, and with the carbs dialed in) they were bad to the bone. The hardware was there. The Boss had a bad combination of parts. To get it to run, you had to spend big bucks on what was already an expensive car. It was really unfortunate.

My Dad bought a new one , put on custom exhaust system, off with the smog , a better Holley Carb, a dual point distributor and it approached 450+ hp. Fast as hell.
What an awesome car! I’ve got a black jade 69’ with a stroker 427. It’s only 450 horsepower and it is scary to get on, I can’t imagine a 429 with 600 horsepower!
I got my license in 85. Grew up around all these muscle cars, but couldn't ever afford them. The availability of the best dwindled and prices for the rest increased immensely. Then Y2K came along and a new batch of muscle was reborn. Now have a Z06 and 2nd gen Boss 302, due to love of cars like this. Glory days :-)
The BOSS 429.. doesn’t, and will never get any better. A few years ago I read a story about one being found completely disassembled with only 11 original miles on the odometer. I never found a follow up story, but I can imagine that it’s sitting in someone’s showroom still wrapped in plastic with one hell of a story behind it.

I sold my 1970 428CJ RA 4-speed Mach 1 to buy my 1969 Boss 429 Mustang in 1977. Owned the car until 2002. The car I really wanted I had seen several months earlier - a 69 Boss 9 Wimbeldon White with around 7000 miles, but didn't have the cash to buy it then. The Boss was basically a race engine and Ford had tried to detune them for street use. Installing a better camshaft helped them run a lot better. The money now is in original condition cars and if I had one today, I would keep it or restore it to original condition. The Boss in this video does not sound like a stock original Boss. Noteworthy: I have seen Holman-Moody dyno graphs of Nascar prepped D-port Boss 9s pulling around 640 HP - about 40 more than the Nascar Chrysler Hemi.

Glad to see this 50 year old is being enjoyed and driven as designed. The big block brute has always been my dream Mustang when I was a kid and even as an old man, I love it's nastiness. I'd be tempted to drop a modern 6 speed in it and update the brakes, suspension, fuel system etc... but then it wouldn't be what this one is, a very rare machine.

I worked at Dearborn Assembly when that was built. I was the afternoon stick shift roll test driver. I got to drive more than a couple. The '69 cars were problematic, I worked a ton of overtime that year. not so much in 1970. The guy that showed me how to do that job had 1929 seniority and was leaving.

I believe there is an engine builder called Kassie? Who was getting 900+ hp out of the Boss 429 on pump gas 😲. Also back in 94 there was a showdown between gm and ford to prove who could build the fastest 1/4 mile car. Gm choose a Camaro and Ford a Mustang. First race Gm won because the Boss 429
Was having pushrod problems.
Being hard to find parts for the 429 they came up with a solution. After that the Mustang destroyed the Camaro consistently. Myself whitnessed that Mustang do a burnout at a cruise years later. It was like watching a nitro funny car! I spoke with the owner and he said at that time the car had 850hp and next time I would see them the car would have 1200hp! The display of the Mustang noted it as the fastest street car in America at that time. And being raised near the Dragstrip, I had no reason to doubt them. I dont recall the 0-100 time they displayed, but I remember my Brother and I laughing and saying that it was incrediable. Dont mess with the Boss. TRUE BLUE BABY 💥👍✌

In late 1969 I walked into the local Ford dealership in Louisville Kentucky. Setting on the floor was a Candy Apple Red Boss 429 with the price of $5000 written on the windshield. I was there to purchase a new Red with gold strips Mach1. As much as I wanted the Boss 9. It didn't fit my budget so I drove home in my new 69 $2800 351 4V Mach 1. As years past and I started a family. The Mach 1 was traded for a family sedan. I always thought about that amazing Boss 429 with the large hood scoop, Boss 429 decals on each fender and that huge SOHC engine. But being young and not a fortune teller. Who would have known the value of that car today. I have to add. Maybe because it was my first new car. I have never owned another vehicle that I enjoyed as much as my Red 1969 Mach 1 which also fetches large prices for restored copies. 1969 was a great year for Mustang styling and performance. Thanks for sharing this surviver Boss 429 and putting us in the passenger seat.

A 735cfm carb. My boss 302 came with a 780cfm it breathes and it roars. Feed that big block.
They went with a 735cfm on the 429 for insurance reasons and emission standards.
Ralph Moore - Around 1974 I was at my local drag strip in my 1970 Mach 1 351. A guy came out in a Boss 429 and was running 12.0 - 12.1 ET’s which was REALLY fast at that time. His only mods were long tube headers, a big 3 barrel Holly carb and slicks. He was definitely the big dog that day amongst the street driven cars.

Remind me of my 1973 Montego GT it was specially ordered with the smaller 429 with the T-10 4 speed and 9-inch rear end. It also was a NASCAR tag chassis that never made it to any track but found plenty of use on the streets of Detroit City. Sad but true I ended up trading it in for a minivan in the late 1980s for my ever-growing family I now had. I wonder where that car is today I understand it's worth a a small fortune now For its rarity alone. It would be cool as hell if I could sit in behind the wheel one last time before I pass on from this life. It was cherry red with black interior it had the Mach 1 style ram Air hood scoops on it from the factory and it was a fastback. 15 inch Magnum style chrome Wheels the same style that's on this Boss 429 mustang in this video.

In the late 70s and early 80s, someone apparently gathered all the 1969 Boss 429 Mustangs and put them in barns. Every one I discover that exists today seems to have been found in a barn. It is fantastic to see this car actually driven! Often, all we can get out of owners is a cold start inside a garage. To see one out in the streets and with a foot pushing down on the gas pedal is astonishing. Nice car and thanks for sharing!

What a cool car you got to see and ride in! My first car (in 1973) was a 1970 Mach 1 351 and my best friend had a 1969 Mach 1 428 CJ. We both used to street race a little (who didn’t?) and I did a little bracket racing with mine. I say this only to show that I was around a lot of these cars back in the 1970’s and I can say that the car you rode in is not 100% stock. Specifically the exhaust is louder than stock and a bigger cam has been installed. The stock cam in the Boss 429 was very small (for the CI) and did not lope like this car does. The stock Boss 429 engines were notoriously weak torque wise (due to the too large intake ports and the tiny cam). Putting in a bigger cam really woke those engines up. Your noting that the car had a lot of torque is further evidence that a longer duration cam was installed in this car. I heard the owner say that Boss 429’s made “600 HP”. This is baloney. Perhaps a full race NASCAR Boss 429 made that kind of power but not the street version. They were under rated at 375 by perhaps 50 or so HP. Boss 429 engines really like to rev to take advantage of the huge intake ports. The owner of this car (understandably) kept the RPM’s way down. I doubt he ever went much over 4000 RPM..
you are correct, in BONE STOCK configuration the B9 probably made LESS HP than the 428 CJ. It certainly was a full half second SLOWER than a 428 CJ which caused serious alarm at Ford but not enough alarm for them do put a better cam and carb on for 1970. The warranty department won the war. So you had an engine that had 700hp potential but in stock form would have barely put out 400.

Just like the '69 Roadrunner my Uncle gave my brother and I with a warmed up 440 in it. Has a newer radio and whatnot that we've yet to use in the month we've had her now simply because the engine sound is music in its own sense. Nothing beats that beautiful sound of turning on to a road and just mashing the GO pedal to the floor and hearing the car come to life :D
Exactly....any of my cars with a cammed up Ford....289, 429 etc....never even had a radio,,,,the engine was like music even when cruisin down the highway.
That car is a rolling piece of art. My 1995 GTS has a radio, but I haven’t listened in years because I like the Flowmaster stereo much better.
I drove my 70 mustang daily for nine years. There was something about that car, it was special. It was mean, but so easy to control. Rev matching was smooth and seamless and oh with the sound that poured out of the pipes... Pure heaven. It was just a blast to drive, great memories. Best part of my youth by far. Second Mustang was a 68 California Special, it was very cool, but an Automatic, just not the same.
I'm a Chevy guy, but the'69 Mustang is my favorite Ford. A local guy that I kinda knew was a Mopar Hemi fanatic. He would buy every Hemi car he could find, swap the engine to a 383 or 440 and sell the car. He also bought a new Boss 429 Mustang, I'm not sure which year, and he took me and my friend for a ride and it was awesome. He didn't keep it long and it's the only Boss 429 I ever saw.

I remember the bottom portion of the air cleaner had normally open air port doors . So that when you closed the ram-air scoop vacuum was over ridden and the warm air port doors opened . A very COOL Ford .
Brings back memories of my 69 428 CJ. Blew up the original motor and replaced it with an all aluminum 430 grand national. No body on the street ever came close to beating it. It was wearing a holley 1050 dominator and would get about 5 gallons to the mile with your foot on the floor. Top speed was about 147.

Chrysler hemi is a turd on the street as well. The boss was insanely choked down, tiny 735 Holley , boss 302 had a 780 for fuck sakes. The worst ex manifolds of any v8 muscle car, thanks to the shock towers. And a wimpy camshaft. Chrysler hemi had great manifolds and two carbs, and was still a mutt that often would lose to a shotgun. NOTHING will outrun a boss9 when it’s uncorked. I don’t care what brand.
Also, the cylinder head is made for a 500”+ engine, not a wimsy 429. Ford choked her so bad for no reason, they could have easily used the 3.85 crank and had a 460 boss. But chose not to.

I don't know what planet you guys are on but a stock Boss 429 wouldn't fall out of a tree. Potentially they could have been the baddest musclecar built. Ford castrated this motor. A 426 Hemi was finicky but in a sharp state of tune (fresh plugs, optimal timing, and with the carbs dialed in) they were bad to the bone. The hardware was there. The Boss had a bad combination of parts. To get it to run, you had to spend big bucks on what was already an expensive car. It was really unfortunate.

My Dad bought a new one , put on custom exhaust system, off with the smog , a better Holley Carb, a dual point distributor and it approached 450+ hp. Fast as hell.
What an awesome car! I’ve got a black jade 69’ with a stroker 427. It’s only 450 horsepower and it is scary to get on, I can’t imagine a 429 with 600 horsepower!

I can't imagine it either because a stock Boss 429 didn't even have close to the 450hp that your car has. It was lucky to have 375hp as advertised.
I got my license in 85. Grew up around all these muscle cars, but couldn't ever afford them. The availability of the best dwindled and prices for the rest increased immensely. Then Y2K came along and a new batch of muscle was reborn. Now have a Z06 and 2nd gen Boss 302, due to love of cars like this. Glory days :-)

The BOSS 429.. doesn’t, and will never get any better. A few years ago I read a story about one being found completely disassembled with only 11 original miles on the odometer. I never found a follow up story, but I can imagine that it’s sitting in someone’s showroom still wrapped in plastic with one hell of a story behind it.

I sold my 1970 428CJ RA 4-speed Mach 1 to buy my 1969 Boss 429 Mustang in 1977. Owned the car until 2002. The car I really wanted I had seen several months earlier - a 69 Boss 9 Wimbeldon White with around 7000 miles, but didn't have the cash to buy it then. The Boss was basically a race engine and Ford had tried to detune them for street use. Installing a better camshaft helped them run a lot better. The money now is in original condition cars and if I had one today, I would keep it or restore it to original condition. The Boss in this video does not sound like a stock original Boss. Noteworthy: I have seen Holman-Moody dyno graphs of Nascar prepped D-port Boss 9s pulling around 640 HP - about 40 more than the Nascar Chrysler Hemi.
That’s awesome. It’s not entirely stock . It’s cammed and has a larger exhaust and carb. Runs way better when they are allowed to breath.
