Another fun comparison today between three smaller GMTs that don't have much in common other than their auto GMt movements. And even then, they are all different! Please use your imagination regarding the Maen's bracelet, as I've swapped it for something - what's the word I'm looking for - better! Which one is your favourite? Cheers, Jody

Bought a 42mm Steinhart Coke GMT in 2017 (with the ETA2893 Elaboré) and it has been my daily ever since. Really can't be beat for 500 bucks, runs at +5sec/day aswell even after wearing it pretty hard for over 4 years now!

@@Ozmeister666 Nice! My Pepsi Ocean 39 GMT seems to be doing about -1sec/day. Nice experience when the alarm I set on my phone goes off precisely when the second hand hits the 12 on the Steinhart, even nicer since I hate my phone and I love my watch, it feels like the watch scoffing at the phone. =D

Great review, and even better result! I may be a little biased, as I recently bought a Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Military. Similar specs, minus the GMT, and I really think it's a fantastic Diver. So, yay Steiny!

I actually prefer the look of the Steinhart. Would likely be my choice.

I own the non-GMT version of the Yema Navygraf Marine Nationale and when it arrived the movement was erratic and the crown only occasionally hacked the movement. Yema customer service couldn’t have been more helpful - they were quick to respond and arranged collection of my watch by courier back to France and kept me up to date at all times. I got my watch back within a month and it now runs perfectly

Totally agree, I own the Steinhart Titanium 500 GMT and the Squale Tropic and there's nothing between them. The Steinhart has the Sellita and the Squale has the Eta and there both great movements.

I was looking for a GMT from Steinhart, but settled on the Classic Ceramic GMT (Batman homage) for both aesthetic and functional reasons. I prefer the rotating ceramic bezel of the Batman version, prefer applied over painted indices and find the dial of the Explorer homage simply too busy. All personal preferences though, including the cyclops which I prefer for my aging eyes. This one is my second Steinhart, and I have been delighted with both, not only on a value-for-money bases, but on their build quality regardless of price.

  • @karlsenula9495

My choices in order would be: Steinhart then Yema then Maen. The X factor being which look I like better ... I like the look of the Steiny so much that I have the Pagani version homaging the Steiny which is homaging the Rolex.

  • @CorseSquadra

Bought the Yema GMT back in August (had the chance to choose the S/N as well). Very pleased with it, although the crown doesn't pop back to the first position when you push it. Instead, it pops back as you're threading it, moving the GMT hand/date wheel in the process. Build quality is very nice as you mentioned, and the parachute strap is a nice addition for those who don't really fancy bracelets. It is my usual go-to everyday watch, and sits proudly next to a Yema Flygraf in my watchbox. Movement accuracy has been almost spot-on until now. The only thing I would like to be rectified is the GMT hand. It doesn't click into each hour, and it is difficult to set it initially. I also like the Maen, and was considering it instead of the Yema. I believe that Yema is making strong claims with its "in-house" movements, but it all comes down to long-term reliability, especially with such hefty price for a left-field brand, as you so correctly put it.
Greetings from Cyprus, and Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Jody. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more videos from you in 2022. Great job in 2021 too. Another alternative would have been the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT. It's less than a $1,000 on a strap and if you apply the same logic as was applied to the Yema you can get one on a bracelet for less than $1,000 most of the time too.

Agreed. The CW is a nice lookng watch. In fact - as you probably know - Yema also do a GMT with a brushed S/Steel 24 hr bezel that has the same Explorer II-ish vibe as the CW. Both are good looking pieces IMO.

thx for this nice comparison. As a fan of GMT watches I'm always glad to see something about. Beside others both Steini variations in 39 white lume & 42 yelowed lume are my favorite watches wearing quite often for a longer time. The ETAs inside are my favorite GMTs. The chinese GMT clockwork Pagani etc. using ist worlds apart in quality but happily a lot of different GMT homages around at the moment.

I have the Yema and I was able to choose my serial number which was really cool. You should note the lug width is 19mm and not 20. The bracelet is really comfortable but it does stick out from the case quite a bit so people with small wrists might not like it even though it’s a 39mm case.
One really annoying thing about it is how high on the lugs the spring bar fits. It sits toward the top and not in the center, and it really makes the nylon strap look stupid unfortunately, because it angles down so sharply. It’s such a shame because it’s a cool strap.

Awesome video, Jody. I own two of these watches and really like all three. I own two Yemas and have never had any problems. They shipped straight from Yema and arrived promptly. They still run beautifully. The Steinhart is fantastic value, and I also the version sold by Olko, which I actually prefer… all white lume (which is also better than the Gnomon) and a cyclops that adds to the vintage vibe. The Gnomon has a much nicer crystal as the Olko is quite flat. I think the MAEN has more x-factor than you give it credit for. Thanks again, and Happy New Year Jody and Mrs JOMW!

I definitely appreciate your time and insights in making this presentation. What I've found is that "slightly domed" crystals with poor AR coatings tend to pick up more unwanted reflections and, for me, make the watch harder to read quickly. YMMV. Between the Yema and Steiny, my heart says Yema, my wallet says Steinhart. I'm so conflicted. I'm surprised you didn't include the Glycine GMT. You're a good friend to have in a bad way, Jody.

I have the Steinhart in 42mm and I agree (pretty much) with your assessment. I've had it for at least 2 yrs & it remains one of my most worn pieces; not bad for an impulse buy (I literally bought it about 5 mins after I learned it existed! The Explorer II ref. 1655 is one of my favourite all time watches and I couldn't pass up a "version" suitable for daily wear for under $1K).
I've never been hands on with a Yema but i like the brands ouvre - a lot. I dare say I'd own one if not for their rep. of bad quality/service.

Hello and happy new year Jody! I bought the Yema and am very happy with it. From prior Yema purchases I was concerned about the accuracy of the movement but I’m happy to report its very accurate, around 5 seconds per day only. Also very legible and happy it’s not a copy of anyone else’s design. I don’t love the bracelet though, because I have an under 7” wrist and the non articulating end links make it look a bit awkward. The extra strap is great though. Overall very happy with it and getting a lot of positive comments.

I'm on the notification list for the Steinhart. I haven't purchased an analog watch in a long time, pretty happy with the Rolex and Omega offerings I have now, but I've lusted after that Explorer design for years. I'm also not going to pay $20K for a vintage example and I really like how Steinhart has paid homage to the original. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long.
    Thanks for the great comparison!

Have the Maen is a slightly different colorway, as well as a discount for ordering early, the movement did give me concern but after months no problems, keeps good time. Have non GMT Yema's and would be getting quite a bit off, 10 percent plus loyalty money just don't need another gmt. Steinhart is a good watch, just never considered them. No mistakes getting any of them. I just like the way the Maen looks and growing up in the NY Metro area and still living in it, it does give me some feelings. I was born in NY and first few years lived in upper Manhattan in Washington Heights, not far from the George Washington Bridge. Great comparison review and Happy New Year.

I own the larger 42mm Steinhart. I wouldn't trade if for any of the others. Steinhart makes a killer watch. I get mine from Gnomon. I don't care for the Maen, even a little bit. Interesting to see how good the crystal is on the MAEN. I'm wondering if you can do a top 10 best crystals list or even somehow figure out a way to quantify crystal wars? I recently bought a Certina DS GMT because I wanted a jumping hour hand movement. I was uncertain about the design as I has never seen it in person, but It won me over and then some. It is by far getting the most wrist time of my watches right now case is larger than these but I think it is good value and with the 80hr power reserve it is a keeper.

Great video on a type of watch I love! Thank you. I think the Yema special edition version is not to my taste. Unless I have some sort of a connection to what makes the watch a special edition, I would choose a standard model. Special editions are also marmite watches -- either you love them or not. Comparing a special edition, sold out watch, to a standard watch is also a bit of a miss, esp. on the category of price, although I understand you must review what you have. Loved the video, and these comparison videos are the best. Very demanding on your end though, I'd imagine. All the best!

I have compliments on both, the Batman has the jubilee bracelet and looks great. Bought the same for the ocean one and it does not look that cool just like it does not belong with the watch. It had a date change issue at the start, but gnomon just replaced the entire watch for me and its all good. Re the Steinhart Jubilee: I have it on my 39 Pepsi Vintage GMT and while it won't get you an upgrade when it comes to the clasp, the thing is definitely more comfortable than their Oyster-style offering. Not that their Oyster is uncomfortable, mind you. Its build-quality and articulation are excellent. Mine has seen pretty heavy use for two years now and other than the usual desk-diving marks on the clasp it looks and feels like new.
There are only two potential negatives with it that I can see:
    1. It doesn't go well with most of their designs - at least not according to my taste. I'd never put it on my 39 OVM or my 39 O1 Cermit.
    2. All the links are brushed - no polished mid-links here. Again: Personal taste, I guess but definitely worth mentioning.

The build quality is amazing, the Swiss movement is solid and it wears so well! Sorry bout double posting, but I just remembered that you can get the Steinhart in a non-fauxtina version as well. Neither from Steinhart directly nor from Gnomon but from a company called Olko Watches. Non-aged, white lume in daylight (both on the dial and on the hands) and probably blue lume by night. They don't provide a night-shot but mention BGW9 in their description of the watch. It also has a flat crystal with a date-cyclops.

Ha ha, I was really curious how this would turn out as I own the Maen and Yema Superman GMT (the older ETA version), which is very simmilar to the Yemah here, but with domed crystal, applied indicies and a few other differences. And the result doesn't shock me and I'm glad that you're enjoying the Maen, because it is my favorite watch of my personal duo. I actually bought it because somehow I lost my love I had for the Yema... So the Yema sits in the box now and Maen gets really a lot of the wrist time now. What I like about it? Well, although I'm usually the bracelet guy, I must admit that the Maen is incredibly comfortable on the standard rubber strap and with the black dial the rubber looks cool. I have the red-indexed version and the dial is a true standout, as is the AR, that combination looks so amazing. I also like the case - the finishing is OK, but what I like are the shapes - a bit different take on a pretty usual case shape and I really love it - that stepped execution. Together with the hands it gives the watch a bit of an art-deco flair, while still being modern rather than vintage. So a great everyday watch for me. And why I lost my love for the Yema? Well, the customer service wasn't perfect, I had a few interactions with them (a warranty claim, later a service needed due to my clumsiness...)... But it all turned out well, so there's no sour taste there. But I somehow stopped liking to wear the watch, because it doesn't look good on my 16,5cm wrist - even tough I have the 39mm model, the lug-to-lug is significant, the lugs don't turn down and the first link on the bracelet doesn't help. And it sits very tall on my wrist on a NATO, so not a way for me as well. Generally, the bracelet on the Yema feels a bit too non-conforming to my wrist, the taper makes the watch kinda top heavy and it doesn't feel very comfortable. So the Maen it is for me. I wouldn't consider the Steinhart here at all - not because it's an hommage, but I just don't like the overall look for some reason.

The Maen looks like a dive watch on eBay being sold without its bezel. Nice job and yeah, you got it right. The Yema shoulda won but value is not insignificant and the Yema is missing that oomph that shoulda made it a clear winner. Happy New Year!

I think people looking at these watches might want to consider the Revue Thommen / Grovana homage (Oh maj) GMTs that echo the Rolex GMT Master II range.
I bought the all black version, but I converted it to the Batman colours, even getting the shaft of the GMT hand painted a dark blue by my watchmaker.
The Rolex BLNR Batman is easily the best looking GMT made anywhere, but since I cannot justify the Rolex’s price, I get the look for about 5% of the Rolex’s price with the Revue Thommen.

You know what I like about Steinhart? It’s an honestly good watch and they aren’t pretentiously priced. Will they win a design award? No. They are mostly homage watches (with some exceptions). Are they horological masterpieces. No. But they all seem to be built with love and attention to detail. I think most come with genuine elabore ETA or Selita movements. They all seem put together pretty well. And they don’t gouge. If I had a friend ask for an affordable and decent watch recommendation without breaking the bank.. I could comfortably send them there. With their fliegers, divers and chrono selections.. there is something for everyone. I think they even have a ladies selection. Nice comparison Jodi!

Late comment, had a deposit on the Presage gmt, but it's not really a diver, the 5gmt is amazing too now but despite owning a 5 that has been scuba diving it too is really a swim watch. As the ideal scuba holiday watch may be the Yema, Looks great too, bit annoying theres no possible third timezone 24 hr print on dial, and so is that slightly rubbish glass.....

I bought the Olko edition of the Stienhart earlier this year and it's taken the majority of the wrist time since. I like the flat sapphire with the cyclops. As I get older the cyclops becomes less an unwanted blob on the crystal and more of a necessity to see the date. Soon I'm going to need an entire magnifying crystal to read the time.😬

    • @salmatosjr5285

Not to mention the Olko edition gets rid of the fauxtina. The contrast between the white hands and the fauxtina was to much for me.

Happy New Year Jody! I just sold my Steinhart Ocean One GMT 39mm as I felt it was a wee bit small on wrist. On the other hand, I simply adore my Yema Superman as it wears bigger despite the small difference in diameter. Yema FTW.

If losing the Marine Nationale tie-in isn't a deal-breaker, Yema's Superman GMTs have the same movement and similar retro design/heritage with that lovely domed and AR coated sapphire crystal you wanted on this one. Bezel also ditches the friction fit and goes clicky and the lume is on maxi plots so that's stronger as a bonus too. Bought the all-brushed steel one recently during their Black Friday sales for less than this Navygraf and so far very satisfied.

  • @gamesetmatt23

Yema is one of those brands that I have looked at closely, but almost every time I come up with a few "if only's" (like the crystal in this example).
When you're forking out $1000 ideally you want to have as few of those as possible. It's that old saying that applies just as much to buying watches as it does to trying on a dress at the store... (I've got a ton of experience with that, btw 😂😂)... if you don't love it now, you're not going to love it later.

    • @JoseSierradeLeste
      @JoseSierradeLeste 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've had a few Yemas (and still do) and I agree with what you're saying about the "if only" factor for a $1000 watch. I have found, however, that Yema is a relatively unknown brand and they just don't hold a ton of value on the secondary market. I have a Navygraf heritage that I absolutely adore, picked up for $500. At that price point, it's a very, very nice value proposition. Jody's not wrong though, about their customer service being very French, with a typical result of "c'est la vie" lol.
And yet, that Navygraf is one of my favorite watches. It's not for everyone and it's a watch that sucks on a NATO strap, but the bracelet is phenomenal and the overall experience of it has been well worth the $5-600 price profile. Ymmv of course.

@@JoseSierradeLeste When french people are proud of something they usually are so over the top they come across a little arrogant at times. I suffered through this myself but when you look closer the french are more often then not very friendly people. "C'est la vie" btw is an attitude that helps through rough times a lot.

Love a JOMW Fight Club video!
I’d be more than happy with any of these three to fill the GMT shaped hole in my collection.
The Yema was initially my pick of the bunch but it is so much more money compared to the other two, the Maen appeals as it’s basically a GADA watch with an extra hand and functionality (almost like a stealth GMT!) but the Steinhart is so hard to look past as it offers so much bang for your buck! Plus I have such a thing for that “Steve McQueen” Explorer 2 handset 😍
Happy New Year to you and yours Jody! Thank you for another year of amazing videos 🍻
