    hands and feet are the two lightest slots (you said head and feet in the video, for clarification). with head being 0.1 weight heavier than them.

      Thanks man. Just be aware, this video was prior to patch 1.08. For a lot of people survivability is now more important than damage, in which case you might prefer to look at farming gear to make the "Sennin" build I posted a couple of days ago.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man. I get how confusing it can be too. My recommendation is pick the weapon you like the most and spend more of your play mastering parrying/dodging/weapon skills. In your first playthrough gear matters a lot less than it does in NG+ and beyond. You can check out my red demon build, which was the build I played through NG with entirely before I even worked out half the stuff in the game. It's a katana based build, and with that I highly recommend learning the iai quickdraw and especially backwave skills. Backwave is very easy to pull off once you get the hang of it, and very hard until you do. But once you do, it'll make killing human enemies a cinch, leaving the rest of your stats to focus on whatever you like and yokai damage. There are good tutorials on backwave on YT. But just quickly, you press block just before the enemies attack hits you, and block immediately after it to pull off the move. There's a little more to its nuance than that, but that'll get you started. Have fun!

      Fuzzy Bearbarian I run dual sword skill build. everything I have on my swords is skill based. I finally found a weapon with close combat damage 20%. would it be stronger for me to put that on my weapon instead of skill damage? I noticed close combat does raise my overall attack stay on my weapon so it would hit harder. I just wonder if it would make my skills hit harder too and what other moves close combat damage wouod effect?

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Skill damage can roll higher than 20%, so yes, keep your skill damage weapon. It is unlikely that your build will be stacked with too much skill damage, but if your gear is all about skill damage you might do better with CCD on your weapon instead. Only way to be sure with your build is to level up your CCD sword then compare using the two to see the difference. To your other question, CCD affects all your dual sword attacks, whereas skill damage only affects skill based attacks. That's why skill damage is always higher than CCD, because it has less situations in which it can be used. Me, however, I practically only ever use skills, so yeah, skill damage usually wins with me.

    This is one of the most interesting videos on builds as it goes more into building a build, and how you come to ideas, rather than just putting up use these stats and these perks etc.
    This way people can understand what choices make up a build. AFAIK this is the only video of its kind, where Nioh is concerned. Great work.

    This was a great video. I had gone through the entire game without actually having a build, and just having all stats at 20, since I was using all weapons to both max them out, and figure out which I liked best. The extra boss fights after the WotS tore me a new one, but after reworking my build to something akin to this, both those fights, and the DLC became a breeze. I made it to WotW before I got bored, but I figure this would have worked all the way to WotN with very few problems.
    So thanks so much for taking the time to get all nerdy with the stats, and sets (I just used a full kingo set since I didn't have the stamina to mix and match without sacrificing a lot of skill points). It still works perfectly 1½ years later.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. You played the game the right way the first time imo. Working it all out for yourself from scratch is where you get the most fun, which is also what I like to do. I hardly ever look up guides on anything. I just post what I learn to help others who either don't have the time, can't be bothered doing it all themselves, or who are having trouble and need some help. Good to know these builds still have a place over a year later too. Have a good one!

I find myself wanting to play through the game again from fresh, and still remembered I had found an amazing build from last time. I suppose I'll find out once I get through the game the first time.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DanHearsVoices It's addictive like that :) However, my advice would be to get to Way of the Nioh before investing too much time in builds. From Way of the Wise you start getting ethereal gear, and that's when real builds start. But Way of the Nioh is when you get to The Abyss, and at that point you can farm ethereal gear properly. It takes a lot of effort and grind to do so, and The Abyss takes a lot of play to get through. That's why I recommend not investing too much time now as it can burn you out before you really get to the point of having to grind for gear and gear level. You're best off getting a build you're comfortable to take through, and then hook into ethreal gear-based builds in WoTN. Good luck!

    The 29% number applies only when deciding whether to choose 20% CCD or FAM A+ on your weapon. I don't think it's even possible to get that much armor CCD right now anyway. .29 is merely the solution to the algebra question of "how much armor CCD would I need for FAM A+ to give me equal to +20% CCD?"
    For comparing other factors, the number is different, since their values on a weapon or armor bonus vary.
    You want to solve for x
    (1+x) * (1+ y) >= (1+x+z)
    To discover whether adding a new multiplicative value will give you more than adding to the same multiplier you already have. In the case of y = 15.5% and z = 20%, x is 29.03%
    In the case of Skill Damage, it can go to at least 22.x%, so that x would be lower, with the caveat being that Skill Damage only applies to Skills, which isn't a big deal if you mostly use Skills. I don't think Skill Damage applies to Final Blows though.
    You've got the general idea though. You want to have as many multipliers as possible since adding more onto a multiplier you already have a large amount of will reduce the effective increase compared to introducing a completely new multiplier. It's not diminishing returns as you might think of in Souls, where they are hard-coded, rather it's just how the math works.
    The exact point of "diminishing returns" depends on the value of the other options, say 15.5% FAM A+ vs 22.9% Skill Damage for your weapon, or the full Armor of the Exceptional vs mixing two CCD sets.
    The only values I'm not entirely sure of is Mid/High/Low/Quick/Strong Attack Damage and Skill Damage that lists a specific skill. That is, whether they are separate multipliers as well or if they add to CCD/Skill Damage respectively. I'm not sure I can test these myself, I've seen conflicting reports and I can't be sure they accounted for all variables (not all variables were known, Equip Weight is a new revelation).

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mix Master Swordsman/Yatagarasu/Warrior of the West you go over 30% CCD. In that case, wouldn't rolling skill damage on a weapon be better than trying to roll Fam A+ on a weapon? I ask because I'm not even sure why whether to roll Fam on a weapon would be a question if you're trying to max damage?
      And yeah, skill damage definitely does not apply to Final Blows.
      Thanks for the clarification about the 29% number though. I kind of got it was a very select circumstance but went with it as trying to talk too much math to keep people centered on avoiding too much of any one type of damage seemed a bit too much lol.

    • @Sljm8D
      @Sljm8D 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weakness of the Yatagarasu mix is that it goes below 30.1 weight so you lose some of the hidden innate Equip Weight Damage Bonus.
      Skill Damage should give you more, unless the SotC bonus from Master Swordsman counts toward the same multiplier rather than being a multiplier on its own (again, still have to test Stance/Strong/Weak Attack and specific Skill bonuses). Then again, you'll lose out on Final Blow (which Familiarity Damage Bonus does increase).
      I don't think there's a setup that currently exists aside from 3/3/3 with Yata where Familiarity is a good idea. That set is sub-optimal to begin with due to the weight, until/unless there's a way to get it to A Agility (which is the intended tradeoff with Equip Weight Bonus).

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I admit I've never tested final blow damage on its own without having already done damage beforehand and until now hadn't even considered it was a factor in the multiplication of other damage types. In this video the Sanada/Swordsman combo gets roughly the same Final Blow Damage on the first Marobashi enemy as the Sanada/Armor of the Exceptional combo, and even though the latter has more skill damage, you'd think that shouldn't be the case given the Sanada/Swordsman combo has almost double the final blow damage stat. So yeah, I think there needs to be some isolation testing on this.

    Not sure if you've seen the relevant thread in r/Nioh but apparently damage also scales with toughness. So for any weird damage differences you might want to check that, along with the post. I didn't include a link because I know that usually flags the comment, but it should be easy to find.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That thread got deleted, and I suspect it's because toughness does not scale damage, and that the fact that it seems to may be because toughness and equipment weight gains seem to go more or less hand in hand. I mentioned in the video equipment weight seems to have an inherent damage gain that goes along with it, and I'm guessing the toughness correlation has been mistakenly assumed when it was actually weight causing the gains. I can't say for sure though as I honestly haven't tried to separate the two in any meaningful way and I always have toughness on my gear when I'm doing testing. What I can say though is that it's not really something to have to consider with heavy armor builds as by default you're getting the toughness above the threshold that that original Reddit thread identified as the cap for gains (278 toughness). If I get time I might investigate what happens at a lower weight with light armor and toughness on and off gear. We'll see. But after making this video I'm kind of in need of a break from doing that stuff haha!

    • @lordkagetorauesugi
      @lordkagetorauesugi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fuzzy Bearbarian though it's anecdotal at best, what I can say is I have toughness rolled on all my gear and as my familiarity was hitting each of the thresholds for stat increases after soul matching, my damage would go up. then after soul matching again, it dropped and went up again with familiarity. (the rolls going from +2 to +7) My damage would then climb with familiarity on my gear and end up hitting the same attack value without me using any kind of familiarity damage bonus. The phenomena didn't start happening until i put toughness rolls onto all of my armor pieces. but perhaps there's something else going on there that I'm not noticing, though I'm pretty sure I've isolated it enough. (My weapon stayed max familiarity, so there was no interference there). I was using the build that uses kingo's, by the way, that i saw in the thread you referenced above.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Attack would have dropped also though, so that would be difficult to determine which % of your damage drop related directly to the attack on your gear having also dropped. But I'll be keeping this in mind. I have some gear to level up for something else I plan on doing, and I might just keep attack off that gear but keep toughness on to begin with to see :)
      EDIT: Re-read your comment about attack/toughness. This should be easy to test. Remove toughness from all your gear. Damage should go down. Add it. Damage should go up. I'll look into this ... at some point. I need a couple of days off though hahah!

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is one of math and I'm not a math guy lol. But basically the more you stack of a particular type of damage the less the multiplier delivers you benefits. So to answer your question practically though, it doesn't really matter with final blow damage since you can't really substitute another damage type for that that I'm aware of.

    Loved following this series and testing along with you. Funny how the game has been hinting at this 28-30% thresh hold the whole time. Look at how damage from behind works, 20% kingos and 8% passive. Yokai CCD, easiest roll is on accessories, both can roll up to 14.9% I believe. CCD on two sets highest amount is about 25%, they nerfed carnage to 30%, highest skill damage roll on weapon is about 22%, clan bonus 7%. This is all over the place, and the game is constantly giving you all these different ways to stack to that 30% in like 8 different places at once, just took us all a couple months to notice that o ya no shit diminishing returns on multiplicative stats ..... awesome work though, and goes to show even further that it's not your level that matters in this game.
    Edit: another thing, armor of the exceptional, less equipment damage bonus, get rid of the helmet....

      I tried that when I was testing it. Less equipment damage bonus gives less overall damage than what you get with +35 on the helmet, so you lose damage if you remove it and try to get more damage from a damage bonus of a+ for less armor.

    Lvl 701...how long did that take? Im still lvl 160 going through the last DLC. I can’t bring myself to grind through way of the strong for levels...its too damn repetitive.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Level is not nearly as relevant as gear. The + value on your gear matters WAY more than level. A level 701 with 300 gear will do less damage than a level 1 with 300+100 gear. So fortunately you don't have to worry about grinding levels. Besides, in late game, max level is 750 while enemies are above 1100, and there's no way to bridge that gap. Thus, the trick is to learn to play underleveled all the time. I beat Way of the Nioh when I was in the mid 300's, and only hit 410 at Abyss level 130, so I was more than 600-800 levels lower than the enemy. Also, don't grind levels at Way of the Strong, it's a waste of time. In Way of the Nioh amrita comes thick and fast, so you level up really fast there. Concentrate on your gear first and foremost. Of course, that means you need a lot of gold. Restless Spirits is the best for farming gold, plus be sure to max out all the perks you need for gold gathering. Any other tips just ask. Have fun.

    I have been watching your dual sword videos concerning close combat builds, but with the levels being dropped 300 from 700 to 400, so I'm unsure where to put the levels for best efficiency. I really would appreciate your input. and any advice on paying the tab for soul matching would be great. I have 300 blacksmith patron points above the max usable already lol. thanx and thanx for the vids.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally prefer the Sennin build now that levels have dropped as it is a perfect balance of defense and offense and works well from 250 and up. As far as soul matching costs go, I'm not one for advice because my view is the game is broken on that front. That's why I don't play it anymore - the resource cost grind and the need to save scum over hours and hours and hours just to get a single decent roll on a single stat is just, well, broken. It takes away from just playing the game to level up/improve, and for that reason I'm not personally prepared to do it. But yeah, the only advice I can give is to save scum.

  • @tanzersol3812
    @tanzersol3812 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there any build you would recommend to someone who is level 200? Your examples are of someone who is vastly leveled. Assuming that skill is 99 and heart is 50-60 and Kingo is being used. Is there any other build choice you would recommend after this guide?

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Level is largely irrelevant. What matters is the armor, weapon and gear set combination. Like, in this video I'm level 700 because that's what the game leveled you up to easily when it was first released. But after they nerfed level, I continued and completed every different NG including the Abyss before reaching level 400. I don't know your playstyle or where you're at in the game - at 200 I was starting Way of the Nioh. But I recommend just crafting Hayabusa's Dragon Ninja set (don't farm it, craft it, otherwise it'll cost you too many needless stat allocations to equip), putting 99 into Heart (scales your ki and your sword), and the rest of your stats into whatever else you need for the skills/magic/ninjutsu/guardian spirit you want (Kato!). Use Flowing Shadow as your main skill, and spec your gear out to take advantage of the set and to minimize damage from firearms and elemental damage. His set alone saves you thinking too much about a build as once you get used to the playstyle with that set, and once you've crafted decent rolls for the stats you want on your gear, that set will carry you right through the whole game into the first 40 levels of the Abyss. At that point, I recommend farming all ethereal gear (Tatenashi-Oyamatsumi mixed set with Flowing Shadow as your primary skill). But you can do that when the time comes.

  • @Teamgoodlift
    @Teamgoodlift 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Fuzzy, quick question...how are you getting all your armor pieces to have that +35 attack bonus? I noticed it's inheritable, but I can't seem to find any armor with that perk.

    • @mackprime6975
      @mackprime6975 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can usually find that on the Kingo glove piece. At first it will say Attack +20 but with max familiarity, it will rise to Attack +35. Remember unlike on weapons, you can only get familiarity on Armor pieces in NG+ where you will find green "Divine" drops instead of purple "exotic" ones

    • @Teamgoodlift
      @Teamgoodlift 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh gotcha, thanks man :) I was able to reforge the attack perk onto one of my armor pieces but its been pretty rare to do it that way

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look for gloves dropped from Revenants (or that you forge) with inheritable of +20 attack. You can inherit that to your other armor pieces. When you max familiarity, it will go to +35. If you're really really lucky, some +20 inheritable attacks actually go to +36 when you inherit them and max familiarity (you can tell during the soul match if they will do that because on the item inheriting the attack value it will say +21 instead of +20). But, the +21's are pretty rare in my experience.

    What’s the reason that Windstorm is the best dual sword atk? I don’t know how to use it properly so I don’t see it’s potential. I’ve always jus been spamming sotc and water sword

    • @Nekufan1000000
      @Nekufan1000000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, from what I understand from reading about it, as someone else who doesn't really see the appeal, it's fast, it has a larger hitbox than it looks, it hits enemies when they dodge away from it most of the time, and it can lead into SotC. Later in the game with higher difficulties, Water Sword can get you killed against most enemies as their attacks get faster. Windstorm pushes you/them away from them and keeps you safe while getting out a multi hit attack. If you're building towards Sign of the Cross, you're stacking skill damage anyway and Windstorm is a skill so it gets that damage buff too. However, water sword has a lot of useful situations too, particularly against larger yokai as seen in the video where he nukes them before they finish their entrance animations. It's also pretty easy to use against the one-eyed guys just by getting around them.
      Basically, Water Sword has the DPS, it does more damage and it does it fast, but Windstorm has the speed, the reach, and keeps you mobile to dodge if you miss.

      No idea any more. I haven't even gotten to Kusa builds in the new Nioh setup - and won't. Were you level 750? I was level 750 and also went to 320, but some other people told me they were lower than 750 and went to 355, so I don't know what that's about. Unfortunately I had to wait a couple of days to download the update, and then I had to go away for a couple of days (to see Hans Zimmer in concert live!). But I'll be back on to it tomorrow, so stay tuned.

    • @ameriichinose9801
      @ameriichinose9801 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I just leveled up to 750, 2 days before the DLC dropped. I would've hoped you could give me advice to make this build work, even with the setup I told you and even 175 +12 equipment, I get wrecked easily in Way of the Demon in the second region and third. Completed the first though.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I avoid giving advice to people on theory. The Dragon of the North DLC increased the grind to an all new level. The last thing I want to do to anyone is say "try this" only to find out because I'd never done it myself it doesn't work, costing them valuable resources and many hours of play for nothing but bad advice. So yeah, I won't put anyone through that. I just need time to play with the new content and work out what is the best way to go with it all.

    • @ameriichinose9801

    • @fuzzybearbarian

      There are like 6 builds in this video. I definitely will not be updating all of these builds because of the DLC. The DLC has changed a lot of things, one of which is the grind to get amrita and gold. There is no way I am going through the new grind to update all the builds I've ever posted. I'd be here for months of my life. That's not going to happen. Instead, I'll be updating my channel with a new build that takes into account all of what has happened with the best possible build of all of them to play the game as it is now. I'm playing through right now testing and refining this build. So far I've gotten to the last region of Way of the Demon and haven't died or even come close to it. So yeah, I have a new build coming, and it'll be worth using.

      Hey man. Doesn't matter where Change to Attack is so long as the stat you have it for has the most points in it. ie. Heart of 99 and Skill of 60, you'd want Change to Attack Heart. If it was Skill 99, Heart 60, you'd want Change to Attack Skill. And yeah, the game is really addictive (at least, it is until the grind in Way of the Wise burns you out).

      Ha ha yeah I heard Wise is, maybe not so, I think Im just hanging in until a 7th perk SOTC sword drops from the heavens then im done. Dam that illusive slot lol

      Oh man, getting 7 slots is sooo much easier than it is in WotW. I played for hundreds of hours upon hundreds, grinded for weeks and never ever got an ethereal sword to drop like that, not once. Gave up in the end.

      Yikes !!!! Wow thats a whole lotta grindage champ!!! doesnt give me much confidence ha ha. My 6 slotter SOTC was a completely random drop during a side mission !!!
      Currently mid WOTD, only lvl 252 and seriously doubting my resolve to keep going until Morobashi unlocks again.
      Spending most of my time shoving my swords up Giant Toady's clacker to lvl up, finding it bizzarely relaxing although not really the answer or the way forwards.... sheesh, road block !!!

    So.......Sorry but I'm kinda Stupid. Based on what you're saying in the video....Should I only use water element over elements that are more effective against ___ enemies?

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, you're not stupid, that's a great question. The answer is no. Builds are typically general - as in, for most scenarios. I like the water element when I'm trying to increase my physical damage output (water element increases physical damage by a lot, 20% from memory). I use Earth element when my build is ki focused as proccing it will double the amount of ki damage an enemy takes. However, using water element against a water boss is basically useless, as an example. Those water blob creatures for example will take a ton of hits to kill if you're using water, but next to none if you use fire on them. So wherever possible use the element that suits the situation if you know what it is (some enemies it's not so clear which element does what), but as a general rule use the element that suits your build everywhere else.

    Just started the game . Kinda having hard time deciding which guardian spirit to pick from the 3 . Which is better Kato, isanade or the wind elemental bird ?

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your build but Kato is generally the best. My advice is not to get too hung up on builds until you get much further into the game (Way of the Nioh region tbh). Try to get to Way of the Nioh as fast as you can with as minimal effort into creating a build to help you do it. There's a lot more after Way of the Nioh to do and you'll only burn yourself out by then if you don't aim to get there quickly. Was a bit different before all the DLC came out, but now builds really start at Way of the Nioh.

    why do you use change to attack heart when dual swords scale (in most cases) Skill > Strength > Heart? is it just for the Ki boost?
    i find when using dual swords i dont ever run out of Ki unless im trying to Moon Shadow human enemies...also High Ki Reduction would work just as well (i would think) for Windstorm & Water Sword (Shrike, obviously, is situational but i find my Ki is always max after doing the Final Blow attack -- the same with Sign of the Cross).
    Ive watched most of your Nioh Dual Swords builds because i was having a lot of trouble finishing NG (im currently shredding through WotD because of them) but i always see Change to Attack (Heart) as your inherited skill.
    maybe i missed it in one of the other videos, though.
    Thanks for the content; its crazy useful.

      Using Change to Attack (Skill) if skill is at max, would be just as effective as Change to Attack (Heart) if heart is also at max, so it doesn't matter. You can use Change to Attack (Whatever) so long as the 'Whatever' is an attribute you are maxing out. The net result will always be the same. That said, the dual swords I've been using scale Skill > Heart > Strength. That's why Heart was a high priority to increase after Skill. But if you used dual swords that scaled Skill > Strength > Heart, then you certainly wouldn't bother increasing Heart and thus also wouldn't use Change to Attack (Heart) either. These days if someone asked me if increasing Heart was really necessary for ki management, I'd probably say no. I'd probably tell them just roll Everlasting Ki on two items and fast ki recovery (zero ki) and you'll never have to worry about ki at all no matter how much of it you do or don't have lol.

    I don't get one thing. Could you explain to me please how to get 2 pieces armour set if you just put one?? Because when I put one piece I didn't get the 2 pieces bonus...

      You need the Yasakani Magatama accessory. It grants -1 requirements on armor set perks.

  • @Darkimpacterr

    ok so here is a stupid question. i have made countless dual swords and none have rolled with all stats slots on them. hell half the time they end up with no inheritable at all. is there a way to surefire this? or do the RNG gods just hate me.

    • @fuzzybearbarian
      @fuzzybearbarian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's pure RNG. However, in my experience it isn't that hard. Simply aim to roll a weapon with one empty slot but no inheritable at all. Then you can inherit into the spare slot and you have all slots filled.

      Well, there's a lot going on in Nioh. It's easy to miss/forget stuff while you're focused on other stuff. I do it all the time :D
