But also families need to be forthcoming when there are predators amongst them! Even here in America family members will dismiss and ignore sexual assault within the home or extended family. Why?!!! Medical report showed the girl was defiled, she identified the culprit only for the PP to reject the file for lack of evidence. When we tried to get independent bodies like Human rights, Probation and child fund, the case file disappeared without a trace.

I’ve been in Northern Uganda for approx 2 years and this documentary isn’t even a tip of the mess there. A few months back, I witnessed a first hand scenario where a gentleman working with Local Gov’t (LG) was looking for a man who had impregnated his 14 yr old niece. Why? He wanted to hand over the girl to the man officially for marriage. But the guy responsible for the pregnancy had escaped when he’d heard about it. LG gentleman then called police and wanted us arrested because we didn’t help him catch the guy. A very high ranking police officer showed up and to my dismay, was the origin of the “get her married the her perpetrator” idea. I thought he was joking until he said “That’s how we do our things here”. It’s then that I knew that the plight of underage girls was far from over…

This may be a cultural thing but for me the term 'defilement' trivialises the evil that is being done. There is no simple solution. The government, society and most importantly the parents have to do their part to stop this.
Btw this happens in other countries though probably to a lesser degree.
