Im a caregiver, this is so emotional , about Kikuyu thogoto, I can imagine what's happening there im just crying this is Soo sad ,,😭 I'm blessed to have my aged parents both, my sister left her marital home to come and take care of my elderly parents as rest of us who are still working to be able to support them, we usually gives her a break after a while, we alternate eg those who are able to say for three weeks, others can stay 10dys depending how we get a leave, please guys let give our lovely parents first priority ys they give birth to us they brought us up what else can take their place ,,it a command from our Almighty God, in the ten commandments Exodus cp 20 v 12 , , to me one else they are our second God , 🙏
I am a caregiver & i love it, taking care of elderly gives me joy despite traveling out of kenya i will keep chosing elderly care forever.. they open bigger door for you if you treat them well inshort you'll never luck, i am a living testimony ❤
that's even for those fortunate to get to old age. its not even guaranteed to get to old age. Its a blessing. I even wonder how people will be so heartless to people of advanced age. These are people full of wisdom, and blessed to get to that stage of life. I learned the most about life when i was fortunate to care for my grandmother for 3 months. Very humbling and something you cant forget. Today she is no more, I would do that over and over if i had the chance again. i miss her every time i remember how she cared for us, until the point where she got to old age and we took over. People pls, treat our elders with dignity, respect, care and love. they are the pacesetters. cherish them.
My maternal grandmother broke her hip bone at 90. We relocated her to my retired mum's home, almost 150 miles away and she lived on a wheelchair for 4 more years before she died. Her final 4 years, though immobile, were her happiest years. She was cleaned each minute by her two surviving daughters and any grandchildren who were home at the time. She became more beautiful and her memories came back. When she died, we actually celebrated her life. We all felt we had done the best for her. My mother is now 73. If she gets down I will personally take her in. It's very African to carr for our old parents. Please don't neglect them.
I am my brother's primary caregiver. This is so fulfilling to do! I shudder at the thought of leaving him under someone else's care. This documentary is so scary
My mother is 97, lives on the island of Jamaica and is in great health, thank God. She still goes to church and still lives in the family home that she purchased in 1952. She has round the clock help, but most of the time she just wants to be left alone to do her crossword/find-a-word puzzles..😀. My father died at the age of 97, twelve years ago. He married at age 90 to a 74 year old woman who treated him well until his death. The plight of these elders makes me sad. But for the grace of God, these could have been my parents.
My mother took care of my grandmother who ended up dieing at home. In jamaica it's common practice to care for our elderly at home and I will do the same when my parents reach that stage of life.
my grandmother died last year, and every minute i miss her. whenever i pass an elderly person whether a man or woman, i miss her. this was heartbreaking story and i sure shed a tear. the elderly deserve love and care and that's the bottom-line.
Why cant this be closed n all these people jailed?I will tell them their old age will be the worst. All this will come back to you.May you be struck by the fire of God😢
Well done Njeri 😊 your episodes are some of my favourites on BBC Africa Eye. You have so much empathy and you tell stories with grace and care. Love from 🇿🇦
The ignorance from some of them is wanting. Patience, more patience is required while taking care of an elderly be it defendant or not. Always listen to them with your eyes, ears and heart ... it is fun working around the elderly and the gratitude from them has always left me humbled, I am a Certified Caregiver and I stand for care with love.
Thanks Njeri and team! My heart goes out to all those who are in care. We don't know how those we trust to care for our loved ones actually treat them. Definitely another hard-hitting, eye opening documentary. Makes me thank God that my grandmother who's nearly 100 is living with family that can provide the best care. For all those who provide proper care to the elderly, thank you. For those who don't, let's hope you don't get the same kind of treatment if you make it to their age. Appreciate this very much. Keep up the great work BBC Africa Eye!
@@BBCAfrica I hope you took that elderly man suffering from the painful skin condition to the hospital instead of waiting weeks for his family to do so....
thanks njeri for this piece. We were a very committed team in supporting the home. we had formed a group that would visit them every month to donate food stuff and do devotions with the elderly but its sad to see that the people in charge of the place are mistreating and abusing those elderly people. madam jane is so welcoming and at first sight you'll feel that those people are well taken care off and its sad seeing what she is doing
Be careful of wolves in sheep clothing. Be accountable of the food you donate, you show the staff packing it in their own vehicles. Speak to the residents… inquire about their care first hand. This has been going on for a long time for BBC to be prompted to investigate. Fire Jane and that staff immediately.. get them replaced. Do a thorough reference and background check of who you hire. Have cameras on site. This elderly abuse is rampant even in the US by our own people.
I thank God for my grandmother, she took very good care of our grandfather until his death, she is admired by many and I hope by God's Grace we will take good care of her.
Thanks Njeri for the expose. It's sickening to the core to see normal strong people mistreating and mishandling the elders. The worst that could happen to the younger is to manhandle the older in whatever way. Children should learn to take care of their parents until their demise. Exposing them to these conditions can't be justified in any way. PCEA church should stop politicking and do what the church is supposed to do, offering hope and care to the society.
I worked with vulnerable elderly people for more than 3 years on daily basis, I learned a lot through this job, helping the helpless, helping the neglected, helping the hopeless. Many of which were only living waiting to die. We struggled to get support, because elderly care is not very common with Africans. Zororai Old People's Home (Zimbabwe) became a better place because we all lived and treated everyone like family. People who have noone to depend on, but felt like you're the only hope they have. Challenges would arise, tears would fall, but joy remained in them being able to smile. Despite having changed work environment, I cherish every effort advanced in helping the needy. 🙏
A lot of care workers in UK are in prison right now for elderly abuse. Care givers needs to be educated about what they should do so they can give optimum care to the elderly..
That’s no reason to abuse the elderly because they are paid poorly. Fire them all and replaced them with people with caring hearts. Can’t be hard to find in Kenya.
And the way I loved the elderly. I could do anything for them. Helping in house chores. Most of the elderly that were close to me died in the recent past. Their understanding and wisdom is unmatched. I liked listening to them. I feel so bad and teary when I see such.

The primary school that I attended was located next to Thogoto Home for the Aged. I used to board at the school, and the girls' dorms were really close to the home for the aged, separated only by a fence. One night, I suddenly woke up because I heard many sorrowful cries, which left me disturbed. The following morning, I asked a friend of mine, and she told me that the cries usually come from the Home for the Aged. When one of the residents passes away, they cry in sorrow. That's what she said. But honestly, I felt disturbed by that.
@Msshikukairu The differences in the expressions of the elderly people in your care, especially the old lady who was laying down, and the ones at the home was really huge. I salute you for practically dedicating your life to this cause. You are blessed 🙌 😇 🙏
I affirm this daring, awesome journalist (Njeri) for great piece in journalism. She brings out unique stories that touch on the very core of humanity at the lowest and most vulnerable groups in society. Not many can dare go that extra mile to address the often ignored members of society. Njeri I from deep down my heart applaud you. You operate with highest degree of empathy and allow to be vulnerable on live coverage because you are human too. That's what competent journalits and counsellors do. Much love. On the story line, it's hard to fathom just like it's hard to judge but I hope they will find justice. The institution has tried to issue a response statement which looked ingeniously defensive but unconvincing in my humble view.
Njeri Mwangi you do great 👍🏾 filming of the voiceless. The works that you and your family devot to are admirable💐. God bless 🙌🏾 you as you purpose to show up for the afflicted. May our elderly find abundant peace, comfort and love as they 'get nearer to our maker in Heaven' 🙏🏾.
Shame to those individuals hiding under the blanket of helping yet they are evil. Elderly persons need to be respected and provided with anything they need. Whats wrong with humanity?
Am a neighbor of the thogoto home. And we have always heard stories. One old woman ran off and dies in the Napier grass field behind the home. A while back there was a lady am familiar with who used to come home with all manner of biscuits, flour, blankets etc We've heard of sexual stuff going on.... It is a hellish place.
Believe me not they will pay,in these care home you go home with a blessing or a curse, it's upon them to choose what to take home. I feel for them and may God intervene and bring their destiny helpers
It's high time the Mt kenya community stopped abandoning their elderly parents in those homes It is the highest form of carelessness to leave your own flesh and blood to suffer in an elderly home yet you have a home Such kind of things can never be heard in other parts of the country
Kenya is not getting better? Wow!! Just because the media amplify the negative doesn't mean the positive isn't there. How can you say this at the end of a documentary that showed a Nyeri woman caring for old people, and I know many like her, youth groups building for the poor, communities paying school fees for the needy, my own church visits and ministers to policemen and prison wardens. In one village there is a teacher who carries little orphans or single mother kids to school for free.... This is a great nation and getting better with time. The media never tells the positive, they always hunt for the negative because the negative sells
Thank you for this well produced documentary on the Elderly in Kenya. I am a frequent visitor to Kenya, and pray you continue to investigte and make the world aware of the various things happening to our brothers and sisters in Kenya. One Love.
May God punish these evil workers treating elderly this way, I'm so sad to see the elderly treated this way. Shame to all their children who abandoned their parents to go through this ordeal. May God bless this woman looking after the elderly in their homes, I will love to follow her part in my country after watching her. Thank you BBC for this documentary
This is quite disturbing; an indictment on society and a timely wake-up call for all. It is this bad, should never happen anywhere. Thanks, Njeri, for the expose, I hope the guy in a suit talking of spot checks does his duty. If journalists are aware of the abuse, why isn't he? Shame
😭😭This broke me. I have made up my mind, am also going back home to look after my 87year old mom. I cant stand this. How do you beat up a cucu with a cane who has dementia. They need to be locked up, looking after elderly and the vulnerable is a calling. Not a job
Thanks a lot for airing this. It is a wake up call for -we- the young generation to care for our elderly. We have a long way to go. It is our responsibilities.😮💨
Very very sad indeed. Why one would treat the Elderly so cruel. What's the PCEA Church and Thogoto Womans Guild Thogoto doing. Do they know about this as a member of the PCEA. Am greatly Disturbed. The PCEA Moderator and all Leadership of the Church should take responsibility of this inhumane treatment. Very very Sad indeed.
There are other children who have resulted in mistreating their old parents and even take away their parents' property and sold it. Leaving the old parents starving. We need social workers to be recruited to deal with this menace.
So heartbreaking! The tears I've shed seeing an old man shaking, cannot feed himself, and they can't help. This is so unAfrican! We were taught to revere and take care of our elderly. These barbaric carers should be in prison to serve as an example to others.
The bad staff members are heaping curses on themselves. The PCEA church needs to do something. With these kind of service , you can either get blessings or curses.
It is disheartening to see what people in their sane state are doing to helpless and unharmful beings, justice should be served where necessary and shouldn't be delayed.
I've been a caregiver most of my working life. I've worked and cared for the elderly and considered it a privilege. This truely is heartbreaking to see 😢 Godbless u Njeri ❤
Wow thanks Njeri for this piece. Its like everything in Kenya is heading the opposite direction. I never thought people would mistreat their elderly parents 😢😢.
This is really sad. A mother gives birth 10 children and takes care of them but the children cannot take care of their one mother. The caregivers have inherited curses and their four generations. Very disturbing and heartbreaking
Don't expect your children to take care of you when you're old. They were your responsibility because you chose to bring them to the world, not the other way round.
@jgjg934 You are an animal. Just the way animals are born and they go their own ways, to never again recognize their mother who have birth to them. My point is, take care of your parents and love them no matter what..
You have done a great job to expose them congratulations for the hard work.....this is so heart breaking 💔 😢 😭 😪 😫 😞 💔 woi Ngai ndukanareke nogio ni aciari akwa kana a muthuri
Taking care of elderly person is so easy. I remember when I was taking care of my grandpa was so loving I missed that man alot . Even though people said he was very discipline with his children when he young but he was the most loving person I even been with in all my life. Love you grandpa
The man who is shaking probably has Parkinson’s. Medication and other therapies can help to relieve his symptoms. Sad that people are treated this way when they get old. One doesn’t have to be Kenyan to have empathy for them. One just has to be human.
I thank God we take care of my old grandmother in her house tupo kaa wajukuu wake we care about her so much ❤❤she never lucked anything ,I thank God for it
This hurts me more than anything. I love taking care of the elderly, they have different levels of understanding things as well care. They are grown kids, take care of them!!!
I by no means love taking care of the elderly, and by taking care I mean, taking them to the bathroom, dressing them and so on. The occasional helping them cross the road is easy. BUT, taking care of the elderly is rewarding. It's HARD but everyday I'm grateful that I was able to take care of my mum. It surely hurts seeing the elderly who took care of us when we were growing up being treated like this!
Knowing this is what we do wen we go outside our country, it makes me feel sad to see how cruel our grandparents are been treated aki, huku majuu ujaribu hivo utafungwa hadi mavi.😢😢😢

I can relate ulikuwa Musa?
Yeah Musa Gitau Primary School
Go back and help please
Very touching. When was that?
My heart is very soft for old people and small children
Same here... one thing in common
This makes the story makes me cry every time I watch. I am in the documentary but I still cannot fathom it.
Wanjiku Joyce Kairu has a heart of gold, may God bless that woman. Love from Zambia 🇿🇲. Well done BBC Africa Team, I couldn't hold back my tears 😢
Thanks so much for staying the course, even though it's a tough watch. ♥
I am in Kenya.
This will happen to them for sure!
Am Kenyan ..we are very religious but very hypocrites 😢
Am a neighbor of the thogoto home. And we have always heard stories. One old woman ran off and dies in the Napier grass field behind the home.
A while back there was a lady am familiar with who used to come home with all manner of biscuits, flour, blankets etc
We've heard of sexual stuff going on....
It is a hellish place.
I'm so shocked that this ruthlessly barbaric shit is happening in our literal backyard.....I've prolly walked past this elderly home a hundred times
Sexual Exploitation 🙆🙆🤔🤔😔😔. Jehovah.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
ooh no! in my country?😭😭😭😭. Honestly, i wish the Govt. will intervene. God bless Joyce for the good work she is doing. Thank you Njeri
Kenya seems to be full of different kinds of abuse. So sad.
While there are people with kinds of abuse, there are also very good people who are kindhearted, loving, caring and God fearing in Kenya
As is the whole world
Thank you for the documentary, it's unbelievable how human beings have no love for other humans.
it's worse knowing this is happening to the vulnerable in society and in Kenya😥
What is the meaning of starting such a home full of inhuman behaviour?
The thirst for money will not be quenched
KENYA full of THIEVES.
This was hard to watch. Why would someone do this to an elderly. Lord i pray i never mistreat the elderly
Believe me not they will pay,in these care home you go home with a blessing or a curse, it's upon them to choose what to take home. I feel for them and may God intervene and bring their destiny helpers
Really broke my heart....this manager yet she claims to be saved...saved my foot
It's high time the Mt kenya community stopped abandoning their elderly parents in those homes It is the highest form of carelessness to leave your own flesh and blood to suffer in an elderly home yet you have a home Such kind of things can never be heard in other parts of the country
Majority do it for the sake of inheritance and greed. and selfishness
Unheard of in many Kenyan communities, very rare!
My heart broke when he had to give his little money to get treatment and still didn’t get the treatment. 😭 😭😭😭
The Government should take the Said people who are responsible for this inhumane treatment to face the law.
*I'll never Give Up Praying for my Country Kenya even if its not Getting Better anymore*
Praying does nothing.
STOP bothering GOD in KENYA too much THIEVES there and NIGERIA plz stop.
We saw SHAKAHOLA CULT KILLINGS IN KENYA BY PREACHERS IN KENYA.
Prayer without labour is the beginning of delusional
Jim Rohn
I have cried 😭 . They don't deserve this treatment at all. Oh dear God, let them have care from compassionate and empathetic people
I c😢ant watch ! Thanks for helping people.
😭😭this is a different form of heartbreak.
God may you never let me take my parents to a care home as long as i'm alive and well🙏🙏❤
How dare they beat or treat the elderly bad. Haven't they suffered enough?
Am so sad to see this happening in my country, in my backyard 😢😢
I can't help but cry,, this is sooo bad, gosh! 😢😢
Thank you for this well produced documentary on the Elderly in Kenya. I am a frequent visitor to Kenya, and pray you continue to investigte and make the world aware of the various things happening to our brothers and sisters in Kenya. One Love.
Sending love ❤ to Kenya 🇰🇪 from England 🇬🇧
dont send love send lawyers
Shame
I am in tears watching this! This is utter wickedness! May God have mercy on them 😢😢😢
Thanks for bringing this out..I'm sure change is coming soon. This is not only the responsibility of the government but also for every one of us..
This just make me worry about being older. I don’t want to suffer
😭😭This broke me. I have made up my mind, am also going back home to look after my 87year old mom. I cant stand this. How do you beat up a cucu with a cane who has dementia. They need to be locked up, looking after elderly and the vulnerable is a calling. Not a job
Yet they don't allow any volunteers to work there.i once asked to volunteer in 2014 i was 25.was told they have age requirements am not eligible
Thanks a lot for airing this. It is a wake up call for -we- the young generation to care for our elderly. We have a long way to go. It is our responsibilities.😮💨
Heartbreaking, for the old man who says he shys away from eating since going to the toilet would be a big problem. 😢😢
This is true for some folks in nursing homes even in western countries. It is very sad indeed.
"I have come a professional begger for the elderly 😢"..God bless you Joyce.
God is looking down on you, be blessed
'God help me, I want to leave this world' The shaking man.
Much love for Wanjiku and the donors....not forgetting Njeri and the team❤
Very very sad indeed. Why one would treat the Elderly so cruel. What's the PCEA Church and Thogoto Womans Guild Thogoto doing. Do they know about this as a member of the PCEA. Am greatly Disturbed. The PCEA Moderator and all Leadership of the Church should take responsibility of this inhumane treatment. Very very Sad indeed.
There are other children who have resulted in mistreating their old parents and even take away their parents' property and sold it. Leaving the old parents starving. We need social workers to be recruited to deal with this menace.
"muhure ndina niugucoka kuma guku"😭😭😭my Kikuyu brothers and sisters who bewitched you.. always trending negatively
So heartbreaking! The tears I've shed seeing an old man shaking, cannot feed himself, and they can't help. This is so unAfrican! We were taught to revere and take care of our elderly. These barbaric carers should be in prison to serve as an example to others.
True. I pray that the Kenyan government does a full investigation and prosecute these perpetrators; and never allow this to happen anywhere.
Even in homes this is happening with relatives ignoring their elderly and stealing the money given by the Govt. I have witnessed it
The bad staff members are heaping curses on themselves. The PCEA church needs to do something. With these kind of service , you can either get blessings or curses.
This is heart touching.
The Government must prosecute them, all who are responsible 😢😢
I will never ever take my mum to any elderly home I’d rather I die than see her in this homes
I miss my grandma after watching this 😢 i will visit her this weekend 😊
You have done a great job to expose them congratulations for the hard work.....this is so heart breaking 💔 😢 😭 😪 😫 😞 💔 woi Ngai ndukanareke nogio ni aciari akwa kana a muthuri
Oh no my heart just broke...justice shld be done to this home
My heart goes out to all those in care homes
Taking care of elderly person is so easy. I remember when I was taking care of my grandpa was so loving I missed that man alot . Even though people said he was very discipline with his children when he young but he was the most loving person I even been with in all my life. Love you grandpa
The man who is shaking probably has Parkinson’s. Medication and other therapies can help to relieve his symptoms.
Sad that people are treated this way when they get old. One doesn’t have to be Kenyan to have empathy for them. One just has to be human.
The lady saying is pretending I bet she never stepped to school. Why hire fools to take care of the old?
This is absolutely heartbreaking i m in tears right now why watching this video
Take care of the elderly remember one day you'll be elderly, and what you sow is what you reap, thanks BBC for the exposure documentary you air.
Thanks Njeri for this.its super sad😢
Knowing this is what we do wen we go outside our country, it makes me feel sad to see how cruel our grandparents are been treated aki, huku majuu ujaribu hivo utafungwa hadi mavi.😢😢😢
