- A joint investigation between BBC Africa Eye and Panorama has uncovered widespread sexual abuse on farms which supply some of the UK’s most popular tea brands including PG Tips, Lipton and Sainsbury’s Red Label. Women in Kenya say they’ve been forced into sex by their managers while working on plantations which have been owned for decades by two British companies.

I bet you, nothing will be done!! the country's leadership runs on sexism, non performing good looking young women get appointments at the expense of professionals. Impunity runs Kenya. Former Migori governor Obado has been accused of Murder and rape and still enjoys close relations with the president, ( possible candidate for civil service appointment), Kiambu governor was accused of raping, impregnating his teenager househelp and refusing to provide adequate help for the child, current agriculture minister has open rape cases. There have been numerous cases among the police raping and even killing women in jail cells.

I had a friend in Highschool who lived in these highlands. One day when going back home I looked at the field through my bus window and I told her it’s so beautiful she then answered me ‘’you do not know the atrocities that goes on in these plantations it’s beautiful outside but rotten inside” watching this documentary , now I understand what she meant 💔

As a Kenyan, the fact that it took BBC, and not a local media house, to uncover this is as insulting as it is disappointing. These sex pests should spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
Kenyan media houses do the same to their workers too.
It is also disappointing that it has been given almost zero exposure in the UK. This should be shown prime time on BBC, instead they show Strictly Come Dancing.
The sex pests are likely related to or connected in some ways to some people in our local media. So such stories cannot be done locally.

Decades of sexual abuse and we still haven't boycotted these companies? It has taken me over 4 months to fully watch this and it's heart-wrenching in every way. The pain of being infected with HIV and being sexually compelled is so deep that some of those victims cant heal. Some people are so cruel but as long as there are bad people also there are good hearted people ,that is what give me hope.

I live in America and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been sexually harassed at work. It’s disgusting and it makes you feel dirty. Luckily, I was able to quit my job and move to another job. These women do not have a choice because that is the only job there is there in their village and they have children. It’s heartbreaking 💔.

I am in pure shock and utter disbelief. African governments are largely to blame. They should firstly ensure that these companies that are benefiting from their soil and their people are paying fair wages and then also, that the Africans working for these companies are not being exploited have stricter rules and regulations regarding sexual harassment, someone suggested female managers if that can’t be done then where is the police, let female police officers be regulars on these farms etc.💔
After watching this documentary I was so moved, I never realized our own mothers are going through this and later come at home and care for us whole heartedly, as if nothing happened to the. I feel unimaginable pain. Dear God Liberate our Mothers.

This multinational companies not small companies ones and we have to support the small. I have do it for a long time and also only the company in my company most time for my city.
My own mother went through this in the 1970s in Hawaii. She got a job cleaning hotel rooms which is considered a very good job, but the manager changed the requirement for the job that she must have sex with him, so she quit. She eventually found another job that didn't have such requirements.

The director should fires all managers and employ new team of managers especially those professionals who have work as seasonal at tea estates and not been confirmed permanent and have qualification to run the sector instead of appoint unqualified personnel whom they end up forgetting the actual business and running up misusing the resources and embarking nepotism and conflict of interest or harassment.

I worked with Unilever for over 5 years in corporate centre London and always thought it's one of the best companies in world to work for. I hope Unilever has not only sacked this guy but have handed over compensation package to all his victims.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear these women tell their stories. Permanent injury, HIV, work constantly being used to essentially force them to have sex with their supervisors…and the companies who employ them trying to cover their asses while saying it’s not the huge problem that it is. CEOs and other execs and shareholders that don’t give a damn what women on the other side of the world go through, so long as they can make more profits. Shame on all of them, shame on the ones that weren’t investigated in this video, but likely have the same rampant abuse. Shame on companies that don’t care who suffers, so long as they are bringing in more and more profit.
I feel for the men in this video too. They suffer the same painful injuries as the women from working in the fields, and they get tossed aside, made redundant, with no warning in a place with little other jobs available. Profit at the cost of human dignity and lives, that’s what these multinational corporations are all about, and the suffering have no recourse when these people can pay their way out of anything. Until the entire world starts caring more about what happens behind the products they buy, caring about the working conditions for everyone regardless of where they are and what their work is, I’m afraid it won’t change. I really hope a lot of people see this and start demanding action be taken against companies and people like this.

They haven't all been removed. some have only been suspended pending a "full and transparent investigation". They'll all be back to their usual behaviour in due time.

This is really hurting, I am in tea industry in Kericho too after having worked in James Finlay too from 2000. I am really shocked! We women in tea have really suffered!! Men really look down on women in so many aspects there's got to be a major survey on this issues including work related molestation, greavances and failure to be promoted including sexual harrasment. We invite more of this and the government should consider chipping in too. Women leaders where are you?? Fida where are you?? Hiv in Africa is huge because people are malnourished of nutrition and vitamins, proper sanitation facilities and access to clean water. There is Also alcohol, drugs but then you also have people in Africa used as guinea pigs when it comes to vaccinate trials. Instead of giving them access to the basic necessities like what I mentioned they...give them "synthetic materials directly into bodies" weakening them even more!!
Also the testing rate is set higher for hiv than other countries, meaning that people with malnutrition deficiency etc test positive for hiv when the terrain is the source of the problem!!..they don't want to give them access to good nutritional foods and clean water and safe health care. There's no profit in nutrition!

I was sexually harassed by my boss at an Italian restaurant in our town when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I was about 19 when I started there or 18 yrs old. I reported him to the police with my younger sister who was a minor at the time as she is 3 yrs younger. He did it to her as well and most of his young female employees and adult females. He only employed young girls and women. He never employed boys or men.
The car conversation in this video reminded me of that time when I had to get a lift from my boss as he wouldn't let me walk home even though he let some others walk home alone. He never had sex with us or anything but he touched us without our consent and we both told him no when we were working separately from each other but had to get a lift alone with him. He would insist that I sat in the front seat and I didn't want to. He touched my legs, back, face and shoulders. I didn't want him to touch me at all. He was my college friends Dad and my boss. He was in a position of power over us and did the same to my sister when she worked on different days. We would turn down the lift but he insisted pretending it was to keep us safe but he really wanted to get one of us alone so he could invade our personal space without consent. He used the fact that he was liked and powerful in town and we'll known as people wouldn't believe that he would be a creep like that. One day I told my sister that I was going to report our boss to the police and my sister then told me that he did the same things to her and others too. Even though my boss could organise paying us at the end of the last shift of the week, he refused to do that and made sure that he called us in one by one as young female staff on our days off. We said we couldn't and he said we must and that he didn't have time to sort it out on another day when we would be working. He would get me to have some tea or coffee and some ice cream. I didn't want to have anything, I just wanted to get paid and go home. He did the wages in the evening or the afternoons so they could be paid in our last shifts but he made us pick them up alone. While his wife and kids were at home. He would make me sit next to him, when I went to get my wages. He touched my legs and arms. He moved his chair closer so he could touch me. I moved my chair away from him, then he moved closer again. He was such a creep, a perve and he deliberately employed young girls and women to get access to them. I saw his profile on Facebook, even though he is retired now. He is grooming women and girls in other ways, by chatting with them at thier work when they served him. He would seem nice I'm sure and insist they meet up with him for coffee. I saw in the comments and his profile statuses that he met up with a shop assistant from Tesco regularly and there was photos of him hugging her and touching her shoulders. Giving her gifts and going for coffee with her. He was an old guy when I was in my 20's he must be in his 60s or 70s now maybe. It makes me feel sick that he is still doing it and noone else has been brave enough to report him to the police. He is in the rotary club and because of that people are scared to report him as too many people will defend him and say he's just being friendly and he's Italian it's how they are very touchy feely. It's no excuse to touch people without consent especially when they say no again and again. My sister and I gave our statements to the police and another girl decided to give a statement too but she got scared and backed out. Even though she gave a statement she retracted it so then the police didn't go ahead with the rest of the investigation. My sister talked to other girls but even though the said it made them uncomfortable. Some defended him and said it was wrong but he's just a friendly guy. Some wanted to report him but were too scare to do so. So our case was reported but we couldn't get him arrested. He was able to keep doing it for yrs to other vulnerable girls and women before he retired and after he retired by chatting with women at thier jobs and meet with up with them alone. My old boss from yrs ago made my skin crawl and made me feel unsafe. If that other girl went ahead to give evidence in court with us if it went that far we could have gotten further in trying to get him arrested and charged. He only got a verbal warning not to do it again and if he did he would be arrested and put in jail immediately, then he would have to go to court then. Sadly even though he continued to do it no one else was brave enough to report him and take it further. So he was free to be alone with women other than his wife. Who possibly knew what he was doing but refused to believe it was anything other than being too friendly. After we reported him we both quit and I saw his daughter every day on the bus to College. She used to talk to me a lot as we were friends. She blanked me and gave me evil looks and hated me and my sister for reporting him. We were not in the wrong he was the one committing a crime every day and getting away with it. It makes me angry that he is able to continue to do that. He wife let's him get away with it without calling him out on it or divorcing him. She's still with him.

I was on attachment in one of the flower farms in Thika 8 years ago. My supervisor was a man. At that time I didn't understand why he told me never to go to any department by myself, and that I should always notify him in which greenhouse I was. But he probably saved me from a lot of trouble. One time I was excited to drive the truck carrying waste material, I forgot to say where I was going. With me, there were 2 guys, and the dumping area was a bit bushy .on coming back, he asked me where I was, who I was with and if anything had happened..me I was just excitedly telling him how I drove the truck ..the look on his face only relaxed when I said nothing had happened....I was lucky, but maybe someone else wasn't

It's disheartening the levels of desperation and mental torture that these managers put the women through just to exploit them sexually in exchange for a job and renewal of contracts. Look up Samira Bellil - a real martyr. The truth is the world is uncivilized. Human trafficking takes place in every "civilized" country. Women and children disappear everyday in the West. There are few if any countries that are exceptions, and none of those are in "The West". I highly doubt any country is without it. You are using circular logic. Taking responsibility for themselves would involve killing/castrating their attackers - and then they would be put in jail for assault or murder and not believed about being sexually assaulted. The U.S. has decent laws about self-defense but you aren't allowed to have guns in much of Europe. Force multipliers are the real answer, but only if they are allowed to take action without ruining their lives even further. The circle of silence is the biggest issue: not being believed. This is also compounded by the issue of false accusations, especially by women in the West. So it takes a court case for each situation. "Gang grooming" is very common in Europe, sadly.

Sometimes it's hard to watch these documentaries because of the brutal truth and evil acts amongst us. But these women are so powerful and courageous. It's not easy to relive constant abuse. This was absolutely heartbreaking. Listening to the lady at the beginning sobbing. Sexually abused so her family can eat. Thank you for this investigation. We need to fight this with our purses. We need to support the women to form their own cooperatives and buy the tea from them. From companies run by mothers who work in safe conditions, free from abuse & rape and with sufficient breaks and access to decent occupational Health.

If action has to be taken, you start at the political level while also doing community campaigns to give these women a voice and a space for safety.
Now in a continent full of corruption, it’s going to take a lot lot of time for change to occur. Especially at the power/ government level.
i felt into tears after seeing this. i am raised in tea plantation, and if this is what our parents are going through to raise our school fees, it encourage me to work smart in order to take them out from that hell.
