      @markviqueira339 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He clearly mentioned that the add-on's were optional and explained why he felt them necessary for him. Personally, I would add nearly every feature that he did for the very same reasons. Getting info from a guy who has actually owned one for 3 years is all useful information. Just pay attention and stop trying to find something to be critical about.

      @moe-lr5xb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@markviqueira339 I think what the guy above you is saying is that the title of this video should be "here's how much I spent on add-ons that most people don't need (and likely never had previously)" I mean $1800 protection film that got destroyed anyways? $300 for police radar and mount? $200 for window tints?

    • @markviqueira339
      @markviqueira339 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moe-lr5xb Yeah, I do see your point to a degree. He could have separated some of those costs at the end to show a clearer analysis. I suppose I view the Tesla as an actual investment, which is different than I see all other cars... as depreciating metal. Since I view the Tesla as an "investment", just as the guy in the video views it (car as an "investment"...still kind of hard for me to say), the maintenance cost to preserve it is probably understated and I think that's where he was coming from. Some of those extras such as the protective film are in my opinion necessary. The film is generally pretty amazing stuff and doesn't need to be changed every year or anything like that (TH-cam has lots of videos). That was a serious rock that went through it. The protective film is not designed to protect against the sort of thing like that would prompt a call to a body shop and one's insurance company. Anyway, I appreciate your comments. Points taken.

    • @moe-lr5xb
      @moe-lr5xb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markviqueira339 I appreciate you reading and replying with an open mind- totally understand if you want these add-ons, and you're right that whatever went through that film was probably the size of a baseball at a high speed... I'm on the east coast and I've been doing a lot of research online about buying a tesla and I was just really disappointed that I didn't learn anything new based on what the video was titled. I've had the same car for ten years and never had a need for any of those things this guy brings up in the video. Only thing I would seriously consider is the at-home charging station and even then I'm sure I would survive without it, it would just be a convenience thing.

      Tesla has an issue with pricing of parts and authorized dealers able to work on them. Teslas are not without faults and expense. Excellent review Andy on the cost to drive a Tesla model 3. My car which I bought in October of 2018 has six to eight thousand miles on it, I have solar on the roof of my house, and the two most expensive parts to owning this car over my 330i BMW would be the insurance and the registration with the state of California.
    I've had over seven to nine cars in my lifetime and the Tesla model 3 has been the best car I have purchased since I was age 17. Having said that, I hope to keep the car at least 20 years if I live that long and have zero regrets in my purchase. All the improvements you've made to your car I have done to mine and find that it only made the car nicer and easier to wash and maintain. Your presentation was professional and enjoyable.

      I pay $83. yearly for my F-250 & THAT IS HIGH! In Texas, we charge based on weight of vehicle since the heavier tears down the roads more that the little passenger vehicles like yours. What state did u mention you are in?
      Insurance, wow! With those high deductibles I saw ($1000.)
      I am afraid to tell u what I pay for fear of really pissing you off.....especially since I am in a huge gas guzzler! (If it makes you feel better, I ***AM*** placing my deposit for the Ford Lightning EV in the next couple of days. The insurance cost on it should be a heck of a lot lower than the Cyber truck)
      So far, you have paid more on your car than I did on my house! My house is NOT depriciating in fact it has APPRECIATED quite nicely & will last way after my lifetime!
      I did love u protecting your hood, that is critical for ANY vehicle. What is the difference between that vs. a full body wrap? Anyone? In Texas, we HATE glass. Even with film on my windows the Sun rotisseries my entire arm as I drive. If I cud replace all my glass with metal, I wud in a heartbeat! We have triple digit weather a lot around here!

    The thing that really counts is lifetime economic viability. The average life of a gasoline car in the US is 18 years. Remember this is average, so half the population goes longer. Some, much longer. The issue is whether these e-vehicles are able to power those car owners who use the second half of a gas car's life. These are people who do not put in massive capital expense. They may buy a car for $4000 to $10 000 and drive it for 100k miles. The problem for Tesla, is that it lasts for about 10 - 12 years, and then experiences total battery failure. That causes an economic end of life. So there are few or no amortized miles available on these vehicles in sharp contrast to gas cars. That is one of the pressing issues with electric vehicles, and it will have to be solved before mass adoption.

    Did you notice that MOST of the money Andy spent in the first 3 years of his Tesla ownership were either discretionary expenses (front end wrap, window tinting, installation of level 2 charging station, purchase of self driving software, radar detector) or unavoidable fees (insurance, taxes, registration, etc.) that everyone who owns any car must pay? I bought a used Model S a year and a half ago and the only expenses I have incurred other than the unavoidables were a new 12V battery and a pair of tires. The actual cost of ownership of my Tesla is MUCH lower than ANY car I have ever owned (I'm over 65 and have owned 15 cars so far). This video makes it sound like owning a Tesla is deceptively expensive -- IT IS NOT. Even with the limited range of my Tesla I will NEVER buy another obsolete internal combustion car again.

    The very second you said that you were hoping to keep your car for at least 10 years, I gave you a thumbs up (even though I think you'll upgrade well within that time). I'm fed up with listening to TH-camrs saying that leasing is the only way to go. I buy all my car's and keep them for at least 5 years (currently c class 5 years, previously 3 series 7 years). I personally like seeing on my drive after 5 years that I own my cars. If my next car is electric then I expect to keep it for between 7 to 10 years. I earn good money, but would never keep swapping cars every 3 years like it's going out of fashion, that's really not the way that I operate.

But that is offset by no oil changes. Also, it won't need "tuning up" or "engine decarbonizing" or other IC engine crap. Hopefully, the A/C unit won't break the bank when it finally goes. Tires aren't very bad either. Overall, it looks like a pretty good deal if one can afford the upfront cost.

    The sensors around the car - cameras of course, but are there non-camera sensors too? If I buy a Tesla for the Canadian climate, the roads can get very dirty. I like the way Mr. Slye keeps track of all expenses. I wouldn't attribute the ticket or radar detector to driving costs, but that shows he is comprehensive. Like with other expensive vehicles, you really don't have to worry about the costs of driving a Tesla. You know going in the cost per mile will be much higher than buying a used car, but you have the money and like driving a Tesla so it doesn't matter. The real issue with Teslas is charging and where you want to travel to.

    Hi Andy - when I had a mobile service visit, the tech said when it's time to rotate your tires, we'll come out and do it for $50 (as you said in the video). I recently looked at the Walmart website in the tire service area, and see they only charge $2.50/wheel to rotate the tires. So, $10 for complete rotation. I have not yet needed this service, but when I do I will check Walmart to see if this is still being offered at this price. Keep up the good work.

    I have snow tires for each of our vehicles so I have to change (which is like rotating) many tires each year. For 40 years I have let tire stores mount and balance but I always put the wheels and tires on my vehicles. I am afraid if I let a tire shop use an air impact wrench then I will have a hard time loosening the bolts if I get a flat (I always carry a full sized spare). When I was younger I would autocross race which required I change 8 tires/wheels most Summer Saturdays. So I would never pay $50 for a tire rotation when I could do it myself in under 15 minutes.

    Very informative video but not very useful. A lot of these costs are optional and not unique to Tesla, such as the PPF and like most things you can go crazy and spend lots of money to do up a new car. What would have been helpful is a list of mandatory costs that are unique to Tesla. And looking at the video, none of it is, even the Wall Charger, you can still run a Tesla without it, and is cheaper to ‘refill’ at a Super Charger than a ICE car. Even if you consider the wall charger as a necessity, it’s not unique to Tesla and applies to all EV. As I say, not very useful. Even the silly radar detector applies to all cars if you go fast enough. Has nothing to do with acceleration, it’s the speed at the time of being clocked.

  • @csaba1589
    @csaba1589 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I watched a few of Andy's videos in the past that were good. The title of this video is very misleading... most of the costs listed wouldn't be much different with the purchase of any other car... The only added cost I have had with my Tesla, besides what I have done with any of my past vehicles, is the installation of a Tesla wall charger, which came out to about $1k and I ended up getting about $300 back in rebates.

    You've convinced me. I'll stick with my used $5000 Toyota, at least until something goes wrong and I replace it with another one. Even with gas and maintenance costs, total cost of ownership won't even get into 5 figures over 3 years. And then I get to buy a newer, improved Toyota. Unless I see a used EV for a similar price. So far I haven't seen that, it's more like about double the price for something with less than one third of the range.

    am I the only person a defective Model 3 was delivered to? Calling Tesla customer service, I was forced to listen to "use the Tesla mobile app" many times -- while the app itself was inoperative as the car was in for service and offline. Does anyone else suspect Tesla is pushing out cars beyond the paltry quality control measures that may or may not exist. Tesla repair centers are not sitting empty, waiting for unbreakable cars that might appear. So far the expense I have put into a new Model 3 far exceeds the money involved. The very FIRST time I sat in the car, the touchscreen froze up, am I to believe it was working well for any and all that drove the car from production to delivery center. J.D. Power lists Tesla as the very worst for number of defects per 100 new car deliveries -- absolute WORST.

      The problem with removing pieces is that the clips can break. Most have techniques that do not require removal and some get as close as possible since most of these kits have computer designed diagrams that cut the ppf based on the vehicle and section.

    The cost of ownership for my wife's 2004 Mercedes E320: Initial cost $55,000 (paid cash) or $3,250/year (let's make it $3,500 to include interest). She drives 10,000 miles/year. So depreciation is $0.35/mile. It averages 25 MPG. At $4.50/gal for Premium (gotta love living in California) the cost per mile for gas is $0.18/mile. I do all the maintenance and repairs (except a couple things that were under warrantee). Total spent on maintenance is $80/oil change every 8,000 miles or $0.01/mile. Corrective maintenance over the past 17 years includes replacing the fuel pump ($500), front suspension arms (squeaky permanently lubed bearings) ($2,500), Crankshaft position sensor ($106), Front wheel bearings ($500), transmission service -replace fluid and filter ($500), misc. ($500). Total corrective maintenance $4,106/170,000 miles = $0.025/mile (call it $0.03). I'm not including things like brakes, tires, windshield wipers (or even the windshield which we did have replaced) as that would be the same with a Tesla. Total cost/mile around $0.60/mile.
    Now according to a Yahoo article a Tesla Model X or Y costs around $730/month or $8,760. For 10,000 miles/year that would come to a cost of $0.88/mile. Now I should point out that the Mercedes gets well over 500 miles/tank on long trips. And it takes maybe 15 minutes to 'recharge the battery (tank) to full'.
    Now I do like the fact an electric doesn't need someone like me to maintain it so it would be good for my wife if I wasn't around.

  • @theplaidconservative5539
    @theplaidconservative5539 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a great video thanks! Some things that would be helpful is that some of these expenses you will have regardless of the type of car. Of interest is what is going to be above an ICE car. Example Insurance tire rotations, Body shop stuff. Probably hard to quantify some of it. I did hear that you can extend your brake life and battery life doing two things. Regenerative braking should put more time between brake jobs which should save and charging battery to 70 to 80 percent unless you are going on a trip. That is said to extend battery life which will be a big expense at some point although they are getting cheaper.
    So do you know what it would have cost you for a comparable ICE vehicle? Like a BMW (no comparison, but this has been suggested by others)??

    Each time the TM3 selling price drops by xyz dollars because of VW ID3 competition, tomorrow’s insane Toyota, etc. and poor EU sales, the existing TM3 bought at the previous high price is caught by an instant value reduction of also the same xyz dollars plus a normal vehicle depreciation, so in fact, a ton of money…Then, after 3-4 years when you finally got it right and want to get rid of the TM3, there will be less than 100 buyers for the 1000 others on sale with ageing batteries, wrong colour, etc..so…good luck!!! And don’t forget to evaluate the damage, since purchase price minus selling price divided by the miles in between equal cost of ownership per mile…and only real transaction prices are relevant and often they can be far below the advertized levels..
