    I came up boxing in the area where Ray Leonard’s gym is, and I’ve met him a bunch of times. But I’m pretty tall and lean for my weight class so I modeled a lot of my style on Tommy Hearns. I had a conversation with Ray one time about watching tape on the greats and taking everything I could from their matches. He asked me which fighter I thought my style was most like and I told him that it was Tommy. He said that I picked a great fighter to emulate and told me not to forget about Tommy’s most important attribute which he considered to be his heart and determination. Seeing them together on Mike Tyson’s podcast was awesome for me, I have the upmost respect for both of these great champions (and for Iron Mike as well, obviously).

I brought a silver dollar and said some huge prayers to God to protect Tommy and no matter what do not let him get knocked down. After my prayers I slid that dollar under the ring post. The next day i went to the fight with a close friend from the service at Nellis AFB. And no shit Tommy got rocked where I left that dollar and he didnot go down. In the last round he looked like he was beyond exhaustion that he couldn't even pretend to fake a punch. That made him look very bad to the judges. Maybe Hearns was too peaceful with Leonard, he looks like they're close friends and so there was none of that extra energy you get from fighting with bad blood. Psychologically Hearns wasn't fighting, and was told to fight but just seemed to have no beef with Leonard.

      Hearns gets two 10-8 rounds in the 3rd and the 11th rounds for the knockdowns. The two big rounds Leonard had in the 5th and the 12th were devoid of knockdowns and he didn't dominate enough to get 10-8 rounds in either instance. That being the case, Leonard needs to win that fight eight rounds to four in order to get a 112-112 draw. There's no way in hell Ray won eight rounds of that fight.
      Leonard admitted he lost and that says it all. The decision was only proof of his star power, which was something that Ali benefitted from late in his career.

    After scoring this one closely(which is what the judges are supposed to be doing, but keep in mind they aren't looking at monitors or hearing the commentary like we are), I originally had it 114-113 Hearns. I gave round 9 a 10/10 round which I hate doing, but I really thought that was a legit 10/10. I put * by round 1, 6 and 7 that I felt could go either way, but scored 1 for hearns because of his control with the jab, but Leonard landed the biggest and really only meaningful punch of the round, so that was very close. 6 and 7 I gave to Leonard, but again could have gone either way. At the end of it all, I think this being a draw wasn't the worst thing we've seen in boxing by far. We've seen way worse. It's also important to remember that Leonard was the golden boy of boxing even in 1989 and was coming off big wins vs. Hagler and then Lalonde, so the judges were always gonna favor him in close rounds. Not t mention, Leonard was the best at stealing rounds in the last 30 seconds to minute of a round because as a judge you're gonna remember the end of the round a lot better than the beginning, so its not like Ray was destroyed in this fight. Yes, he was dropped twice, but there were a few times in the fight where Hearns didn't go down, but looked a lot worse than Leonard did even though he stayed on his feet. But, that said, you have to appreciate the heart of Hearns knowing he couldn't go down. Did Hearns deserve a close win? Probably, but his conditioning towards the end of the fight gave Leonard too many chances to steal rounds and I believe Leonard definitely took 10 and 12. It was too close, everybody. We all hate draws, but this wasn't a terrible draw in my book. Again, we've seen much worse.

      Agree with you 100%
      This fight was close as hell and a draw was not terrible
      Both the AP and UPI scored it 113-112 Leonard, while the Boston Herald scored it 113-112 Hearns and the KO magazine scored it 115-112 Hearns
      I scored it 114-112 Hearns
      6-6, but the two knockdowns make it a two point win for Hearns
      I gave hearns the first three rounds, 7, 8, and 11 and the rest for Leonard
      Could be scored honestly either way, but wasn’t a robbery, just a debatable decision
      Both landed some hard clean shots, I wonder how a third fight would’ve played out

    Salute to the two great champions. They are all good fighters. This is boxing to its best. Its indeed a draw. Despite of two knockdown, Leonard finished the round valiantly. What a classic fight.

    • @NuisanceMan
      @NuisanceMan ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the first knockdown wasn't much since Leonard was already badly off-balance from slipping. Also, Leonard really battered Hearns at certain points. At the end, I really couldn't tell who should win.

      Amazing. Ali/Frazier 1, Joe gets the shit beat out of him. (Spent almost a month in Intensive Care after the fight) Has one solid knockdown, and that has been the excuse for him being given the decision for over 50 years.
      Hearns/Leonard 2, Ray gets beat to hell and knocked down TWICE, regardless of how you justify one not being legit, but you see it as a draw? wow...

    Thing is... Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns are gladiators in a gladiator sport. They both gave the crowd what they wanted. Unlike the world of the past, neither of them two had to die to determine a winner. There's no doubt whether they both deserve respect or not, and there's DEFINITELY no one who would walk up to either of them on the street to challenge them in their skill of the "Sweet Science" of boxing. The fact that these two men fought their hearts out against each other, are friends in real life, and are glad the brutal bout fought for the spectators ended in them both walking out of the arena PAID and ALIVE, should be enough.
