Here in my listening to this while my wife takes care of the baby and our 2 year old girl runs in and out of my office. This song kept me going back when I was 18 working a grunt construction job for $8/hr in Texas. Always dreamed one day it’d pay off and I’d have what I have now. Self funded trading account that more than pays the bills, a wife who is awesome, and two adorable kids.
Wish I could go back, hug that desperate 18 year old, and thank him for the insane sacrifices he made so I could end up where I am now. In a way it feels like this song does that.

I’m going to be 4 years sober this August and that’s something to be proud of. In the most humble manner possible, I couldn’t have done it without Jesus. Some truly terrible things happened to me over the last 3 1/2 years and I’m basically the modern version of Job from the Bible. Yet, 4 1/2 years ago. I called upon the Lord after being an atheist all through college and he opened the clouds and left me standing in the light.

I ignored my own needs in life and helped my late elderly Mother fight cancer for the last 10 years of her life. I said that I'd not comment unless it's an emergency and Mom's memory is the most important emergency because I love her and miss her. She's the only kindness that I've seen in this world in the past 30 years. I am my Mother's son.

This is such an underrated song. Every son knows what it’s like to want to make your dad proud. Especially coming from a family with a successful father and a not so successful son. My dad never gave me his money but just his wisdom and always told me stuff like this. Fantastic line “you don’t need to make the millions, just be thankful to be working.”

“Got your chin held high as tears fall down, gut sucked in, chest stuck out”
That’s how I feel a lot. I cry almost daily sometimes for no reason and start panicking, but I still have to put on a brave face and deal with the world, so sometimes I end up doing exactly that. Keep my chin up with tears on my face, and figure out how to keep moving forward and ignore the tears.

As a daughter who saw first hand a dad who did everything for his children. I wanted nothing more than to see my dad happy, he deserves more than this world can offer him. 50 yrs and finally he made his forever home. Tears of sadness seeing him tired, stressed all those years are replaced with tears of joy, love and gratefulness because through all those hard times he was a father who no matter what WAS PRESENT, WAS THERE and now I'm so thankful to say he is finally getting what he deserves. I Love you dad, Si Dios Quere

If I can offer you anything at my age (34) - start saving as much you can for retirement now. I was only focused on the brand new shiny, impress girls and friends, and now I'm twice your age and trying to catch up for a somewhat lost 17 years (or at least 10) where I could've been shoveling money into 401(k)s and stuff. Trying to catch up when you missed all that is pretty expensive. You don't have to be eating out of a bean can every night because you're saving too much, but save as much as you can now. You will thank yourself in another 17 years, I promise.

I help take care of my brothers, stay up till 10:00 to get my Hw done, make lunches, help with breakfast and dinner, try to keep up on my jobs, ride horses, work with my friends raising money for causes, and managing to go out to work with horses every sat. just because i love to. My dad gets all choked up with me when he talks about it. My dads grandfather past away before i was born in the military, rest in peace.

I remember singing this as a kid with my dad. We'd be driving anywhere, windows rolled down, singing at the top of our lungs. I didn't know back then how powerful the words to this song was, but now, at 28 and married, I get a lump in my throat listening to this.

True story: I had never heard of Montgomery Gentry until I bought tickets to go see Toby Keith in concert in Austin Texas. Montgomery Gentry opened for Toby Keith. As they starting playing and singing I said "Hey I know that song! I like it 😊! They played their second song and I recognized it from the radio also. I said" Ohhh man I really like this song 😯!! As they played their music I recognized their songs! I just didn't know who sang them. After seeing that concert I became HUGE Montgomery Gentry fans. I bought their greatest hits CD and learned their songs word for word. I went to three concerts of theirs after that and seeing the enjoyment on the audience faces were priceless. The first concert seeing Toby Kieth perform after Montgomery Gentry made one hell of a concert!! One I will never forget. I hated when Troy Gentry died in the plane crash. I really wanted to see more concerts of theirs.

I know no one cares, but the part where he says "you don't have to make a million just be thankful to be workin" really strikes me. I'm a 19 yr old high school graduate, and I make $7.25 an hour at work. I work my butt off and have lost friends since I've started working, but if I didn't have this job, I wouldn't be able to put myself through nursing school... +Mariah M.... I am a father of nine kiddos ranging from 3 years old all the way up to 20. I too work my butt off. All though we don't have a ton of money at the end of the month after bills are paid, we do have what we need and some of what the kids "want"! i put a 6 bedroom roof over their heads, food in their bellies, clothes on their backs, and shoes on their feet! It doesn't matter how much money we have as long as they are taken care of. Don't worry, it pays off in the end to see the smiles on the faces of the ones you love!

The second verse, where he talks about rebuilding your life from the bottom up, and then settling down right as your getting back on your feet, brings tears to my eyes. My grandpa served during Korea, had to rebuild his life from the bottom after getting out of the Marines.

It's hard being the person you know you should be. Bruises, stitches, broken bones with no thanks. Long hours that end with favors for others until it's dark and your hungry with barley enough time to rest. But you know everytime my wife hugs me like she hasn't seen me in years it's all worth it, and still to this day when my father tells me he's proud it really hits me deep.

I dedicated this song to my boy that was college bound but ended up engaged with a baby on the way instead after graduating high school and working hard. Worked since he was 14 and became manager at 19. His boss wants to make him a partner in the restaurant he works at by the time he's 25. Takes care of his fiance, baby, has enough to get by and go on trips, but not rich by any means and still thinks of his mother, going out of his way to surprise me with things. Doing "what he's able" and I couldn't be more proud of this boy. He's such a good father, son, and future husband to his fiance and high school sweetheart. They're old souls and the cutest thing ever, like an old couple in 20 year old bodies. This song choked me up a few times at the college part cause I wanted him to go to college but that was my dream, not his.❤️
