Your content has been very inspirational for my Monster Hunter journey. This video is one of the best LS guides I’ve seen and I rewatch sections frequently during my LS journey. You and team darkside make amazing content and I just wanted to say thank you, it makes an impact.
What sets this tutorial apart is not only the stellar gameplay, but that you go out of your way to show very specific situations in actual fights. The sync between the voice over and the moves shown is remarkable overall. Great work, this should be the go-to tutorial for LS players going forward.
Peppo always inspires me to pick up longsword, but then once I do I remember oh yeah I forgot....I'm bad lol still love understanding the playstyle though
Fantastic Peppo! 1 year after you've posted it still useful! I was watching and i just realized, the counter of the sacred sheet looks exactly to the one from MHGU. I'm not playing it yet, but damn it's exactly as seen in the trailers.
@@imsirnootnoot they don't have that kind of essential decision behind every swing like how MH games does, amd don't have that satisfying feel of weight and when attacks contact to the body, even compare to really fast hitting weaponvlike DB in MH. @@BadEnd98 never played god eater but I full disagree with you on toukiden. You have a limited clip of 8 shot, which ammo you choose will dictate what you can do and if you have to force a reload and load in a whole new clip if you want to change your ammo to adapt to the situation, taking more time and not doing DPS. The time I have played toukiden I wished monster hunter would use this for inspiration for new things / concept for weapons moves. The way they did the gunner was 1000% better then what we have in mh
@@imsirnootnoot yeah did we play the same game? I played both toukiden games and some weapons are pretty creative just doesn't on the same level of depth that MH does that make me want to spend hundreds to thousand hours on ONE weapon. Even weapons in God Eater are somewhat very very creative too, when one weapon can have multiple play styles based on those "skills" you use one them, but no, they aren't as satisfying like how you "dance" with monsters in MH, and whole game they're good for 100-200hrs at best and I'm no longer inrerest in the combat as much. And talk about gunner, the bullet system in God Eater is something of the most creative system I've seen, it's kinda meh if you play pure gunner but it's amazingly incredible what creative bullet combinations can do
This is absolutely awesome guide. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and tips. The way you explain things get very easy to understand. I was thinking about start to use LS and now you hooked me up to do so. Keep the good work and doing that absolutely stunning speed runs you do ;)
For anyone that wants to learn a monster's movesets and reliable counterable moves before using longsword on it, I'd recommend using Lance(or a guard-focused sword and shield) since it's a weapon that also relies on counters but it far less punishing when you counter too early or late. Also, if you're using companions with sleep weapons or a sleep longsword, you can use harvest moon before doing your sacred sheathe wakeup hit to build your spirit gauge back up faster.
Finished watching it, the advanced tips really give me knowledge on what I'm lacking of when playing LS for real XD Happy Hunting and have a great day to peppo 👌
just started the begginer tips you mentioned and thank you so much. I thought spamming iai spirit slash is the way to go but holy shit foresight slash is so much fun and easier to pull off
Thanks for this, I’m a dual blade main trying to diversify in master rank. I took down a Lucent Nargacuga with a random longsword I made and it took 25 minutes without buddies. This will definitely speed up my hunts.
I've just started my first MH journey, finished the village quests yesterday. I started doing the hub ranks and I've been looking to get better at the LS and your video is really helpful
Thank you for this guide. I took a break when I finished Rise, and couldn't get into Sunbreak when it came out. I felt lost when I started using Longsword. Your speed run videos a very entertaining, but I'm also super grateful that you created this video. I have something to aspire to. Your mastery of Longsword is a treat to witness. Thank you!
I've been an LS main since I started my MH journey with World. I sticked to the LS because, when used correctly, to me it has the most elegant and clean playstyle and that was my objective. I'm by no means an expert on the weapon, and the amount of options they added on rise & sunbreak overwhelmed me at first. I've come to terms with some of the new techniques and movements added but this guide not only opened my eyes to the possibilities, it also made me realize I've been playing LS with the wrong mindset. Thank you so much peppo for this, everything you said here has resonated with me, I can see what I've been doing wrong and why I felt like I was stuck seemingly never improving and ending up more frustrated than anything.
best tutorial ive ever seen. You explained every single thing one could need to know in detail. I knew everything bc im an experienced player so when i thought things needed more explanation you followed up with it the details right away. Great stuff here. Also youre insane, the stuff at the end of intermediate is most peoples advanced. Your advanced is god mode.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a dedicated tutorial. I actually just went through your MHWi tutorials. (Got back into world. Never finished end game iceborne. )
I just want to say I feel so smart for having picked the exact same switch skill losspringen as you, guess I understand the weapon better than I thought.
Excellent, literally perfect guide in my opinion. You went into exactly as much detail as you had to without overwhelming the viewer with info. I recommend linking some runs in the description that reflect the playstyles mentioned, so people interested in one of the playstyles can watch it at work. Your mic quality is much better than it was in the Harvest Moon video. I know I can't expect a ton of guides, but if this is the baseline then I'm super excited for the next one! I'm always more excited to play LS when I watch your videos, they make me want to improve and just play more in general. All the uploads since you left TDS have been bangers, I've watched every one. Keep it up 👍
I think a special mention of something you can do is use foresight slash as a repositional for your special sheath counter, such as when you know a monster is going to use a certain attack and you aren't in a good position to take advantage of it to counter it.
There are many things I didn't mention, I tried my best to summarize the most important points, what I couldn't explain I tried to show anyway with the footage. The Foresight Slash used as a reposition is used for example at 6:39 followed up with a Serene Pose, or at the very beginning at 1:19 with Soaring Kick. As I said at the end, I wanted to talk about more stuff more in depth but the video was already super long and I didn't want to make it even longer...
Great video of helping explain some nuances about longsword that aren't explained by the game itself. I think you should have mentioned that the hyper armor granted by foresight and sacred sheath counter doesn't actually provide all that much damage reduction if any. It's very easy to get yourself killed by being overconfident and having multiple attacks connect at once due to the lack of knockback since hyper armor goes both ways. Drawn Double Slash for example will massively reduce damage and the frames are also brief so it's unlikely to get you killed like foresight and sacred sheath counter can.
This is an awesome guide thanks so much! (You’ve really saved me some trouble too, since someone I know wanted me to teach them longsword, a weapon I would not consider myself too proficient in)
I feel like I've plateau'd a bit with my longsword play. I'm basically still using basic mh rise Iai counter + helm breaker, but it doesn't always come out as fluid as I would like. Watching this inspires me to try some different setups. Can't wait to try it out!
Showing off the actions you can take from foresight slash might've been the only thing I learned, but this was an EXCELLENT video regardless. I have a mixed set that uses wind mantle, grinder S, and Tempered Spirit Bladr on my Sacred blue scroll because I can actually use that on small barrel bombs (and toads maybe?) to increase my spirit. Great for wake up hits! I'd be super interested in a Hunting Horn video if not just to see the advice and priorities you'd give to players of all skills levels. Only thing that's weird is the timing of this since I'm on a bit of a LS marathon as of late.
I just started playing MH Rise ( series X ) a couple day ago and I felt in love with the long sword after testing all weapons so this vid came in clutch for me haha. I’m all hooked on this game but overwhelmed by all the info and things the game doesn’t tell you😅. Damm I have to rewatch this vid a couple times just to let everything sink in 😂. Thanks for this excellent info and explanation 🤜🏼🤛🏼
i am officially an intermediate player lol. i've noticed recently that i stuck to ISS to counter for a long time after the sunbreak additions out of familiarity with the motion and timing, but often find myself stuck in my blue scroll with the sacred sheath much more as time has gone on. i used harvest in the demo for sunbreak, and literally haven't used it since. should probably try it on a couple monsters at the top of the rank list. great video!
Thank you so much for this...out of a lot of videos i watched, this one gave me the exact type of information i needed to increase my game...i now know i pretty much gotta work on my counters as i don't much but seems to be the most viable method lol also the super strong attack you hold the button down i never knew that or it didn't work for me or i was doing it wrong lol ima be testing this out tonight after work for damn sure lol
I like to imagine monsters encountering a group of hunters and scoffing, but then seeing a grizzled LS hunter and thinking "OH NO! IT'S A WEEB! AND THEY'RE EXPERIENCED!"
A tutorial by the LS god himself. Absolutely brilliant. I learned a lot from this video, even though I mainly play LS. Loved the practical explanations of each move as well. Fantastic work!
Nice video! Hehe, I kinda thought that you have something bigger in the making when you didn't upload for some days. I'm pretty sure many people can learn at least a bit from this. Personally I definitely want to try out some alternative playstyles, because I mostly have been doing ISS spam with HM tbh and that's kind of repetitive after some time xD
Whe parrying with Iai Spirit Slash the Tempered blade wire bug skill (the parry) can be used to parry a follow up attack in some cases. Magnamalo's double laser is perfectly timed so that if you mash Tempered Blade it will parry it perfectly. But I don't know about other monsters.
Lol, my gameplay with long sword is nowhere near this! First time ps5 rise player here and this video is a work of art! I didn't even know about silk binds and scroll slots! I'm excited to get to work on this!
When I first picked up LS back in MHF2, I would've never imagined it would reach such a level of complexity... makes me feel old lol. Basically a mix of IB and Gen LS. Guess I'll be waiting for Sunbreak to come out on PS4... can't wait to mess up G-rank monsters. I bet I'll spend a lot of time experimenting before moving to re-learn other weapons. Anyway, great video. Cheers!
Another play style is the one I use. I do basic counters when I see the opportunity but I roll out of the way a lot. I built my set to take advantage of that. Status trigger and bladescale hone are the main abilities for dodge rolling then paralysis and buildup boost become secondary for status trigger. It's a bit less frustrating and more forgiving than having to learn monsters and countering perfectly.
Thanks a lot Peppo for the content you make! I remember watching and loving your videos in my early teens back in the MHTri days I believe! Do you have any recommendations for monsters to practice mastering the LS on?

Really good vid! I learned a few things. I'm surprised you didn't really talk about Tempered Spirit Blade, though. I find the Iai counter (the 17 frame window one) way too damn hard to time, and even struggle with the other ones (I hadn't been using the sheathe counter, I need to try that). Needoing to do a move before stepping back for the foresight counters often fucks me up with timing. Tempered is INSTANT, so even though it takes a wirebug, I feel like it's really useful. It also has complete damage reduction/invincibility when you time it right. imo, for being "simple", it's beginning friendly, the timing just requires practice. I use that, then have Helm Splitter on the other scroll.
17:47 well said, sometimes I forgot that I was just playing a game. Started playing MH since WORLD and I never truly have fun, I constantly feel bad about myself for not being able to keep up with the meta playstyle...
Still one of your best videos even though a lot has changed with recent updates to the game. Maybe we can see another quality guide up to date sometime later?
Awesome Vid man! I never fail to learn from any of your runs or general tips! (also I was worried when going through the vid, turns out I mostly use that very last play style lol :)
14:24 lol thank god im not the only one who think Mizutsune is awful to fight with harvest moon LS. He slides around and spams water beam 24/7 and is rarely inside of the circle. Worst thing is everytime i knock him over he slides to the other side of the fking area, so i have to sit still and wait for him to get back up lmao.

Nice guide. Also I was not aware of this LS nerf between the original and Sunbreak (I'M a GS player so I don't look that much to other weapon nerf.).
What is that animation on 15:03, after leveling up the spirit gauge
Still one of your best videos even though a lot has changed with recent updates to the game. Maybe we can see another quality guide up to date sometime later?
Tbh i think the time you were working at TDS was holding you back ngl this is great
Awesome Vid man! I never fail to learn from any of your runs or general tips! (also I was worried when going through the vid, turns out I mostly use that very last play style lol :)
From someone who startedplaying since MHFU2. I always start with GS to get my primaty HR LS build; then main it until minmax end game with LBG :D
thanks peppo! i'd like to see one about set building recommendations
best fucking weapon every game, just looks so cool
14:24 lol thank god im not the only one who think Mizutsune is awful to fight with harvest moon LS. He slides around and spams water beam 24/7 and is rarely inside of the circle. Worst thing is everytime i knock him over he slides to the other side of the fking area, so i have to sit still and wait for him to get back up lmao.
mitzutsune is damn menace to harvest moon LS :D
are you using a mod skin for that white colored longsword? or is that a layered skin obtainable ingame?
That pokke village theme at the beginning ❤
Best tutorial ever ❤
What move after spirit reckoning between 17:14 - 17:16?
I want to know too, did you figure out what it was?
