Staying and rebuilding is not an option if the infrastructure is destroyed. No power, no water, many roads impassible. These are islands, they don't have a Home Depot down the road. Everything they would need to rebuild has to come in via boat or plane. Most aren't coming to the US, they are trying to get to the islands that weren't destroyed. So many nasty comments on here. 😔

The island of Abaco, which was hit the hardest and where I'm from, had two hardware stores on it. Both were destroyed by Dorian. The others are on different islands. From what I've gathered, one claims they will rebuild, the other will not. The man that owns the large grocery store, Maxwell's, is rebuilding. All of our banks, clinics and pharmacies are gone. Some claim they'll rebuild, but this is going to be a long, hard road. Especially for people, like me that need medication. I had to take my entire family and move to another island with a pharmacy. As did many others that I know personally. Grand Bahama and Abaco have a long, difficult, path ahead and the Bahamian government, isn't helping. If you do plan to aide us, DO NOT donate to NEMA or our government.

@@inkdreaper874 People are being lied to when they are being told that they can rebuild. It the same in the United States.. Simple truth is, no company is going to issue flood, Hurricane, or homeowners insurance ! No homeowners insurance, no building permits, and so on. And every if someone offered Homeowners insurance, it would be so expensive, few could afford it. And the Government will just plainly say that it is just too dangerous, it's not Sustainable !

We just came back stateside after spending five days in marsh Harbour. Been working with NGOs head knowles, crossroads alliance ministries, aerobridge b, I Capacity path relief. We were stationed at the airport and went out from there daily into the community with donated supplies, philanthropic pilots were flying them in, and a handful of volunteers were working hard to distribute them. We ran into a handful of other NGOs who are all beginning to assess how they can be a resource to is devastated communities. As well as provide support to the clinic and medical care for more outlying communities. The world stage is paying attention and looking to fill in the gap’s to care for them. There have been a lot of evacuations, and any of the allegations about widespread violence we found to be largely unfounded. These communities have been so intensely impacted, and has someone who has worked in disaster relief for years, I can only say that there are no words to truly describe the extent of the agony is beautiful humans have experienced a psychosocial level. Anyway the world may assist whether now or over the years of repair and rebuild, I guarantee you will be well utilized. We found people to be very gracious, humbled, and grateful. TLC can be a wonderful antidote to trauma in the trenches. #PrayForTheBahamas

The US Coastguard has rescued by helicopter some 300 + people from rooftops and airlifted them to safety.
The Bahamas is a coral-based archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Its 700-plus islands and cays range from uninhabited to packed with resorts. The northernmost, Grand Bahama, and Paradise Island, home to many large-scale hotels, are among the best known. Scuba diving and snorkeling sites include the massive Andros Barrier Reef, Thunderball Grotto (used in James Bond films) and the black-coral gardens off Bimini.
