Almost cost the Rockies a chance at 60 wins this season instead of 59...🙄
They won’t even get 59
49...maybe
They won this game anyway
I was at a Mariners vs Dodgers game and a Mariners fan cost the team a double or even a triple by reaching down and picking up the ball. He was kicked out while other fans booed as he was escorted out. Fans should know the rules too.
This guy knew the rules. There is no excuse for this. None.
@@AllAmericanGuyExpert I know, right… And the fan looked like he never caught a long ball before.
You do not need to know the rules to not interfere in the field of play, enter the field of play, reach into the field of play. You merely have to not be a self-absorbed moron.
They make a PA announcement before the game not to interfere with a ball in the field of play.
@@AllAmericanGuyExpert I don't think the fan reached over the fence. Can't tell for sure with that angle.
It was most definitely a home run! Obviously because the heel of the fans glove was beyond the fence. This was a walk off without a doubt.
It looks like he reached into the field of play to me.
Definitely does and people saying he isn't is blind. Look at his body posture.
He did. I was there.
It's on video 📹, yes
It's obvious that he did. The player trying to catch it caught his elbow in the field of play.
For sure. His stomach is leaning into the back of the wall and his upper body is def reaching out into the field. I think if he caught it he would've gotten away with it though
Best thing, he didn't even catch it AND he lands on girl who falls out of her seat! Talk about the complete opposite of a winner.
hell be on a talk show in denver
Was he thrown out of the ball park??
That's a stupid question. It's a rule that if you commit fan interference you get thrown out.
@@somerandomguy5977 You're the " stupid " one if you think that everyone knows that. (But then again you might just be 8 years old)
He's just lucky it wasn't Chicago
If the fan reaches into the field of play, it’s interference. So the question is, did he reach over the fence.? The ball fell on the field of play, so I think yes.
They need to add cameras on the foul poles looking across the fences if they want this called right. Yeah, have instant replay but don’t have enough cameras to use it effectively in a place in the park with huge impact.
I’m surprised they don’t already have those. I was expecting to see a replay from the side
Agreed. There is a center field cam at Coors that would show this fairly well. I haven’t been able to find the replay from that angle yet.
His back arm was resting on the wall so his front arm had to be in front of it
Great call. 100% correct call. Doesn’t matter that people are saying the ball was “a foot” above Moore’s glove. The ball is coming down. He has a play on it. The fan is also very cleverly leaning onto the yellow line. 100% correct
Yes the fan was leaning over but barely. The fans glove is several inches above the fielders glove and that's way to high to not be a home run. That should of been a walk off.
At the point that the ball touches the fan's glove, the glove was over the wall and in the stands.
“Barely” over the wall is still over the wall.
Ball is coming down; he had a play on it.
@@MitchellStone-or6bf The height of how much the fans glove was over both the wall and the fielders glove trumps the fact of the fan being in play. Hell even when the fan was catching the ball he pulled the glove back a little. There's no way the player was going to catch even without the fan there mainly because of how much he was able to get above the wall and how back the ball actually was. The fan barely touched the player and that was when the ball hit his glove.
I keep seeing the word “barely”; show me in the rule where it says “barley” interfering doesn’t count?
Ball is coming down; he has a play on it. Fan is leaning onto the yellow line; textbook interference
It’s in Colorado too so he can be “Cartman”
Given that the ball dropped from the fans glove onto the field, it bears serious consideration that he was over the field with his glove. If that is the case, fan interference is the correct call. Also a point was made by Matt that it looked like there was contact between the fan and the players glove.
if you watch the ball was over the yellow line and the fielders glove wasnt anywhere near making a catch it looked like the ball was clearing the wall when interfered with most umps or new york review wd have said hr on that how do you assume that wd have been caught it wasnt examained enough yes the announcers couldnt believe it they called a hr after seeing the fan
It's called Newton's 3rd law of motion... The ball isn't going to drop straight down. It also appears to glance off the fielder's glove on the way down. Second... Whether the fan and fielder make contact is irrelevant. It's WHERE they make contact. Lastly... Watch where the fan's hand and most importantly his glove land as he catches his fall, on top of the yellow line.
@@_relyt the fielder is nowhere near the ball it his the railing after falling watch the fielders hand its way below where he leaped he couldnt reach it but the assumed a catch was possible why over the fence is a hr unless kits brought back with the leaping catch so they went by a rule but it was out shd have used more judgement
I agree with genesispuredeaf2390. Also, look at the fan’s waist, it’s pressed against the yellow top of the fence. Further evidence that he’s leaning over the field of play to some extent in order to get the ball to hit (the heel of) his glove. On the plus side for him, at least he uses two hands. 😆. On the minus side, he misjudged it. Not that I could have done any better. 😄.
I think the umpires made the correct call. Sorry, Colorado fans! I’m a Padre fan. I know how it feels. 😆
The fan’s “punishment” for this foul deed in fair territory should be to have to serve time down on the field in left field during batting practice until he can make 100 catches…
… while wearing a clown costume. 🤣🤣
@@rogerrosen2323 Griffey made catches like this all the time. You must watch baseball as often as you use punctuation in your posts.
Leaning over the wall. Correct call.
Pulled the ol' Bartman.
Except Bartman didn't reach into the field of play. That's why it wasn't ruled fan interference.
great video i think it cleared the fence couldnt have caught it if he catches it its a hr watch the glove its way below the fans glove if it cleared the fence how do the umps assume a catch when its over the wall imagine if they lost 1 0 on this if seatlle scored in top 10 only bettors wd have lost on it/i think you shd have been more on a bad call opinion new york didnt make the call they shd have
send this to mlb great slo mo if he catches it its a hr hes over the fence
As a life-long Cubs fan, I find your comment very offensive...but I can't help not to laugh either.😂😂😂
@@rogerrosen2323 If the fielder catches it, even over the fence, it is an out, not a HR.
I was at the game. I called interference with my bare eyes. From the 300 section
ok if its not touched its over the fence so they went by the ruule id like an ump review it or in newyork they didnt go to new york
a fan has to stay over the fence that gave the umps the way to call interference althoigh i said it was a hr this gave the umps the right to blow the call
Fan was clearly reaching onto the field. Correct call.
How is it clear? Looks pretty difficult to determine.
No way anyone can say "clearly" one way or another, not with the camera angles seen here.
The fan's belly is against the rail. His arm is forward of his torso. We also have the outfielder to judge the depth of his arm. Yeah, just over the railing. I am not convinced the fielder gets up high enough to catch it.
Slight quibble: Call was fan interfered with the catch. Call should have been fan reached into play to interfere with a catch.
This is really tough because he did reach into the field AND made contact with Moore. However, these were two separate events though with the fan reaching not affecting the outcome of the play (thus being legal) and the contact in fact being legal since it was beyond the field of play.
I think it's a good call. Amazing how Bartman is still the most famous fan interface call of all time. Lol. Thanks for sharing this Matt. Always enjoy your videos. Kind regards from Seattle...
Bartman wasn't called for fan interference.
It may be the most famous not being fan interference call of all time, but the one with Votto has been on a lot more videos that I have seen. Another not fan interference call, aka a foul ball in the stands that a player tried to catch.
Of course the Cubs melted down that inning, lost game, the one the next day and were eliminated.
I often sit in that row, a few seats to the right. A very similar ball was hit to me by Daniel Murphy. I knew better than to reach over, so I got real low, with my glove behind the wall and I caught it.
I can’t tell for sure, but I think his glove is in front of the line and at least. I’ve seen some fans blatantly reach over, so I feel for this guy a little more than the rest.
the fielders glove was way below the fan it cleared the fence it not touched a hr how do they say interference on a ball over the wall cant assume a catch there
watch the ball its over the fence when the fan touches it you cant assume a catch there when its over thats a hr just like the announcers said the fielder wd need 12 inches more
@@rogerrosen2323 it’s not a matter of assuming a catch. It only has to be determined that the fan made contact over the field, including the wall. Even if it was an unlikely catch, the fielder has to be given the right to make it.
Also you can see his body pressed over the top of the wall, indicating he was leaning forward towards the field.
@@webgem14 he couldnt reach it if you look at it and is the rule he has to be clearly interfered with of making a catch
he reached out of the field of play how is that interferance even if the fan slightly was involved rule says was he clearly interferd with the catch we dont know seems not
It was the correct call
OK Angel
wasnt catchable a hr and over the fence how do the umps assume a catch it cleared the fence
100% wrong call. You must be related to Angel Hernandez. The ball was clearly out of the fielders reach and over the wall.
@@DavidConstantin-d1d You must not watch a lot of baseball. Catches by the outfielders like this happen All. The. Time.
@@rogerrosen2323 The umps don't assume a catch on a play like this. The benefit of the doubt goes to the defense since the fielder was denied an opportunity to make the catch when the fan reached into the field of play.
fan is over the wall. it was uncatchable though and was gonna be hr so fan screwed them. catch it from your seat or wait for it to hit something over the wall.
There's no guarantee that the ball's going out, but it's clear it was also over the fielder's head. That was a double at least and maybe a triple depending on how the ball came off the wall.
After he drops the ball his glove comes down mostly on top of the padding that lays on the top of the wall but you can clearly see that a small portion of the glove is in front of the padding on the field of play and that is taking into consideration that after he drops the ball he should be pulling his glove toward his body
The Angel Hernandez of fans.
Basically in my opinion...its fan interference when they cross the line...dude crossed the line...his waist against the rail and arms reaching out...but by the trajectory of the ball it was clearly a home run...outfielders vertical stopped below his reach and if fan hadn't interfered then it would have went over the fence...but if you are a fan...do not cross that playing boundary but do you best to get that ball after it crosses the line of playing field:)
Most coordinated Colorado resident
You obviously haven’t seen Colorado Avalanche games. One dude caught 3 pucks in one game earlier this year. THREE
Fan glove clear as day on the field of play. At 1:48, fielders glove is going straight up because he's against the outfield wall. His gloved hand starts to go over the wall and runs into the fans ELBOW with the fans glove in front of his. What is the debate here??
Is it a home run or fan interference is the debate. Yes the fan is in the field of play but his glove is way up in the air when he was reaching for the ball. I think with how high he was reaching it's to high to not be a home run. The play should've been called home run after video review.
The players glove is clearly the one over the fence when making contact
Yep, right call. He's clearly leaning over the top of the wall a bit. There's no guarantee Dylan Moore makes the catch, but he's sure close enough to it to have had a chance, though.
If ANY Phillies fan tried that s**t, they should be escorted out immediately. I don't care if you love baseball, as a fan you should know better.
Doesn’t Citizens Bank Park have that buffer zone between the field of play and the stands to avoid this very thing?
@@BachBeethovenBerg I think so but maybe some idiot would be a rebel & decide 'I'm gonna break the rules of the ballpark & get myself ejected or arrested. ha ha ha ha ha'
That should really be some kind of ground rule double. Question; if the fan caught it, isn't the batter runner still out since the fan interfered with the outfielder?
Is that front row really expensive for fans to sit? Maybe ban fans from that zone to prevent interference.
The fan interfered with the fielder. The fans right arm can into contact with the fielder's glove and the fan reached over the wall in an attempt to catch the ball. The review was absolutely correct, FAN INTERFERENCE. I've been an umpire for many years before I was forced to retire from the game. A very sad day for me.
Maybe the player doesn't catch this, but clearly contact is made and you can see the fan is leaning over. Stay behind the boundary and make the catch.
The fan's glove is over the yellow rail, and when his glove comes down, it comes straight down onto the yellow rail. So the question is, is on top of the yellow rail, the top of the wall, consider the field of play?
Thin like between J. Meyer & S. Bartman.
That was a home run the center. Fielder never reached the height. At least a foot over the center fielder's glove
From that camera angle was hard to tell. I tried using the shadow to determine where everybody was but I didn't see any interference. Not that it matters. Not an umpire, not a fan of either team. Maybe they need more cameras? A higher fence? Just hit the ball further 😃
"How is this fan going to get out of this stadium alive?"
Easy. These are the Rockies. The Rockies' owners cultivate a fandom that comes to the park to drink and enjoy the weather -- not actually care if the team wins or not. Half of them probably weren't watching the game or understood what happened.
By getting kicked out and escorted by security. 😂
😂😂😂😂😂 the fan dropped it. Lets call him out for fan interference 😁😁😁
I think if he caught it clean and moved on they wouldn’t have made the interference call. It was such bad form they had to call interference
@@SeattAl watch the slo mo it was over the wall all interference is off there assuming he interfered not that it was uncatchable watch its way oveer thee glove
@@rogerrosen2323 agreed,
its only his bad form (dropping ball on outfielder, and laying beer belly over yellow line) that justified interference call . it was like judging poor form iin gymnastics or diving
Minus the fan, the ball may actually have been caught by LF. It is difficult to determine if the touch is over the field of play. The top of the fence is technically in play, but “no interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence” is also in the rule book.
So, the fan reaches over the field. But touches it right at the boundary. He prevents the fielder from making a play. But, that potential play would have been over the fence. (Not sure that he clearly catches it.)
Wish we (and the replay officials) could see a view from the side to determine position and trajectory of the ball.
I agree. The outfielder's glove was just under it
I agree. The fan was reaching over the fence. The ball came out of his glove and fell straight down into the field of play.

I know in the NFL, we are not seeing all of the angles that the league has. Might that not be the case here? Maybe they had one that’s enough to the side that they could see where the ball was coming down.
3:09 It looks like his chest is leaning over the railing and his arms are in front of his chest. The players glove also makes contact with the fans right arm in the feild of play. Interference. Sorry to Rockies fans.
You sound remarkably like the narrator on a couple of other channels.
Even if he didn’t interfere that ball was over his glove
this is why i'm not a fan of "instant replay". Too often the correct gets reversed and the stupid call prevails.
Why have fans that close to the field of play if they can impact the game like this? Why not have 2 walls about a yard apart to minimize this?
A lot of stadiums do have something like you describe.
But if the replay official did his job, then the game was not affected in any way. The official must determine what would have happened with no fan.
How is it fan interference when the fan did not even stop the fielder from catching the ball?
You could call that on every home run if fans happen to be leaning over. Which they are.
No way the fielder is catching that.
Just my $.02, but the rule calling the batter out for something he had no hand in is stupid. Wouldn't this incentivize home fans to reach for balls when the visitors are batting?
Potentially, yes. It’s tough tho, because you don’t know if that will actually be the call. You’d have to make it pretty blatant to make sure they call the out.
The umpires’ job is to nullify the act. It is not an out just because it’s interference. The replay official judged that, without the fan, the fielder would have caught the ball in the field of play. That’s why it’s an out.
So, actually the batter had something to do with hitting a ball exactly deep enough that it would go over the fence-except the fielder catches it. (Except the fan got in the way)
@@MwD676 wrong the ball was over the glove and he was out of play with the glove how is that interfereance i dont think ny made the call so what are you talking about it clearly was out of the field of play and over the fence how can u say that watch the slo mo its in the seats out of play no one used this explanation

Time to raise the fence another foot or two... Coors Field could use it anyway
Really tough to tell but man that a rough break….
The fan didn't deserve the ball...LOL. The Rockies DESERVED to win that game!
The only thing that I can think of is that instant replay felt that the outfielder for the Mariners could have caught the ball but it's tough to tell. But it also looks like to me that the fan had to reach over into the field of play to catch the ball but this one is tough to tell

I read on instagram that this "fan" is a known nuisance at Rockies games, and continuously runs in front of people to chase balls, especially in the handicapped seating areas. Not sure how true this is, but if it is, yeeesh...
There are a few of those guys, for sure. This isn’t one I’m aware of. If it’s the guy I’m thinking of, he would have made the play without interfering.
Adult ball hawks are the worst. Guys like Zach Hample drive me nuts.
@@IRanOutOfPhrases Maybe MLB parks should ban people like that from all the parks. If there’s video evidence or observations by staff of a person over 17 yrs old (or maybe regardless of age) roaming beyond their seating section in front of other seated people more than a few times or more than one game, escort them out of the park without refund and no future admission to the park. Especially if they are falling onto other people in the process. Just a thought.
It looks to me (as a neutral party that has no vested interest in either team):
1) Left fielder went STRAIGHT UP, so his glove is still in the proverbial “field of play”.
2) His glove hits the right forearm of the fan, which means (a) the fan is leaning over the rail, and (b) his glove travels BEHIND the fans glove.
3) After the drop, the fans arm and glove are both seen IN FRONT of the left fielder’s glove.
4) The interaction between the fan’s shirt and the railing show he’s clearly leaning over the railing.
Agreed. The drawstring of his hoodie is already on top of the wall.
Need a view from a side angle to see where the fans hands and glove are. No depth of field from this angle. To me, from this angle of view, the fan reached over the boundary.
Yes, I'm pretty sure it's interference cause he 'reached' onto... The second ruling you stated said 'without reaching' onto field of play... You even put emphasis on the 'without' but he clearly still reached. The spectator also 'prevented' the fielder from catching and unlike the 2nd part, the spectator has to 'come in contact' like by not taking action and getting hit I assume.
Field of Play - Per baseball rules academy: Rule 2 Sec 42 "..Any wall, fence, barricade, rope, wire, marked or imaginary line is considered a part of the playing field. Any areas beyond those boundaries are outside the playing field."
We were there live today, and it was SO close. We all thought it was a run for sure bc the fan wasn't reaching down at all. But so close, it was a tough one! We were all saying he was REALLY lucky we still won. He probably got to his car without stab wounds.
killing someone over that? lmao, clowns gonna clown
Steve Bartman's life was never the same.
Would the batter also be out if it happened to the visiting team?
Yes! It is not a penalty to either team.
The umpire must determine what the outcome would have been had the fan not interfered.
I mean, watching the slo-mo, it sure looks like the fielder has a decent play on that ball. The top his glove is smushing against the fans right arm, which is back farther than the fans glove, where the ball glances off of. Obviously - as well - the ball has a downward trajectory, so it likely would have hit the fielders glove based on the positioning.
If field of play is the yellow line, then the fan had his hand on it. I think the rule needs to change, but based on the rule, I think the batter should be out.
Agreed
watch the ball its over the fielders eaily and over the wall clearly not going to be a catch the rule states it must be clear right

Even so, each player is also going for personal stats.

@@MwD676 No, that is not the real question. The question is "Did the fan reach into the field preventing the fielder an opportunity to catch the ball?"

Looks to me he was reaching onto the field but it’s so hard to tell without the proper angle
There was no interference. The ball was over the fielders glove. Every so often we see review decisions that defy logic. This is one if those.
It makes me angry that fans can't keep their hands off the ball. Did this cost the Rockies a victory? I've seen games continue because a fan interferes and an out isn't made and the game continues.
The ball was clearly over the outfielder's glove, leaving the yard. Home run.
I don’t care about either team, but I can not stand it when they just straight up get the call wrong. Why even have replay at this point, if they can see that and then make that call?
0:10 "It's fan interference", ultimate homer announcer "Good!" I love it when cheaters and liars lose the benefit of the doubt and get punished for their actions.
Dude is leaning on the rail. The yellow line is part of the field of play. Dylan Moore's glove is catching that man's arm. If the fan wasn't there, Moore makes the catch.
Sucks for the fan who was trying to catch a game winning home run. Moore didn't get the chance to make a highlight play. The Rockies still won though, so at least the fan was able to live to see another day!
Mariners scored 1 run in the 10th. Rockies scored 2 runs in the bottom 10.
If there were any way to enforce it, the Rockies would ban this guy from Coors Field for life. At least I'd hope.
It's the right call. It probably was uncatchable -- but the fan made contact with the fielder's glove and possibly prevented it from going higher and making the catch. We can't know for sure so it's the right call to not give the Rockies a HR which _might_ have been assisted by fan interference.
he is CLEARLY reaching over the fence! look at his Shadow.
They just need to have a little space between the fans and the field. I blame the stadium design.

I hate fans like this one who cause their own team a loss or extra innings. Better safe than sorry let the ball go and let your team win that's Teamwork
Not fair. Look at how the ball hits the heal of the mitt in relation to where the fielders mitt is. That ball would have landed at the feet of that girl sitting right there. That fielder would not have made that play if anything it would have tipped off the top webbing of his mitt. I dunno though. If they were too make a call at all it should have been ruled a double. No Homer no catch. Certainly not an out. When the guy falls after dropping the ball it's on the foam yellow of the wall. So that ball was gone.
Maybe could make it so fans can't reach over. A mote if necessary
Fans shouldn't be allowed to get close enough to interfere. There should be enough of a buffer to prevent it. If he is a Rockies fan, what an embarrassment...
what i d of a fan
Was clearly over the outfielders glove. Home run. Should have been the call.
Correct call. They won't show another angle but check the shadows on the yellow top rail.
Shadows don't lie. The fan reached over.
This should send a strong message, concerning fan interference. That is keep your glove in your lap, and enjoy the game.
I've been to hundreds of games, and have caught I don't know how many BP and HR balls. And when you realize the ball is coming at you, your stomach drops and you get tunnel vision. All that exists is you, and that ball. Emotions take over. I get it. I really do. But he leaned a bit too far, and HOW DOES HE NOT CATCH THAT BALL?

The outfielder didn't come close to catching it.
You can't award the home team a HR when one of its fans interferes with a ball that had a possibility of being played. Maybe the LF couldn't have caught it, but *could have* miraculously deflected it to CF who might have raced to the ball lest it was deflected back into play, and maybe even caught it!
It is not about punishing either team. The fan is a spectator-not a team member.
Did the umpires have a different view that showed that the fan was on the field of play?
His glove was above the glove of someone on the field of play. When he brings his glove back it still hits the front edge of the fence.
umps will see it made a mistake why didnt new york review it
@@nachobroryan8824 looked over the wall and uncatchable as the announcers said a hr definitely
@@MwD676 no the umps didnt go to ny they decided out no double if you listen to ump no new york wasnt in on it or it would havea earphone talk and the lead ump said it was their call o new york watches the video and decideds no live call a double after they talked
That was a cherry ball to catch. What a nerd!
The call was correct. Colorado still won the game anyway. The conversation is over.
This is clearly fan interference. He was clearly reaching over the fence into the field. Right call. And for the record, I could care less about either of these teams, so no bias on my part.
Clearly interference. But the penalty is to judge what would have happened without it.
If without the fan it is a home run, then it is still a home run.
@@MwD676 Watched it many times and I just can’t get in the camp that says the center fielder wasn’t going to catch it and it was going to be a home run. I don’t see how umps could have made any other call.
He did. He is going to get baned for life.
i’m going to have the unpopular opinion but according to the rules that appeared to be interference and idk if it was a hr or not . I think it might have hit the top of the wall . of course the angles are bad , guessing reviewers had a better angle for them to say for sure it was interference . btw rip Rockies , I live in AZ and root for the Dbacks now . the Rockies are gonna have a long season poor fans/ players but next time let it hit the wall lol if you are gonna interfere at least catch the damn ball
