Everyone needs to understand the following: there is NO version of this film with Sonic 1.0. They’ve said many times that the shots of him in the first trailer were practically the only finished shots with that design. We probably could get a few concept art pieces or unfinished scenes but Paramount isn’t sitting on a finished version of the same movie with the first version of Sonic.

The thing that really impressed me about Tom was how they avoided a LOT of the tropes you normally see in a lot of movies like this. When Sonic shows up, he gets the opportunity to do something he’s always wanted to do. Ultimately, he realizes he’s happy where he is. I think it's also good for Sonic's character, as he later ends up becoming a hero himself. Spoiler! The scene where Eggman said "The last person to punch me in the face spent the next year eating his breakfast through a straw" had me kind of shocked, it really painted Eggman as a truly dark character.
Yes, totally agree with you. Carrey's Robotnik is funny and he has a sense of humour, but still he's a really dangerous character. He's a threat to everyone in the movie, and I love it!

I believe Tyson Hesse confirmed that Longclaw’s design is based off the owl statues in Labyrinth Zone. And those look more like realistic earth owls than mobian owls. Also, I think it’s explained in the novelization that the main species of Sonic’s planet look like him, but that Longclaw is one of the last of her kind.
I like in the movie how you get bits and pieces of eggman's backstory scattered throughout the film and how they didn't put to much attention to it or try to spin the sympathetic villain angle.
I loved the movie, I'm so glad we got to see Jim Carrey use his manic energy that we've seen in his movies like the mask and Ace ventura. Jim Carrey is back baby, and I hope he is back for good. Jim Carrey has always held a dear place in my heart
I think the Tom character served his purpose and he's even the reason Sonic calls Robotnik, Eggman. He was the first character Sonic talked about and he nicknamed him Doughnut Lord. This established him giving the humans he met nicknames and him calling Robotnik "Eggman" because of his egg shaped drones felt more natural. Also Tom does have a character. He's awkward, he feels he doesn't belong, and he's shown to favor animals over people. Him wanting to leave his home parallels Sonic being forced to leave his home.
I loved the movie - it was a good blend of references for the fans but being open and welcoming to people who have no idea what Sonic is or about. Also there's the possibility that Longclaw was a reference/homage to the owl character from the Sonic OVA way back when, but there's been a few references to owls in the series through other media that could also have ties there. Glad to hear you had a great time at the premiere though! :D
"Weird rough around the edges approach to some of the things" seems fitting to me, as isn't that really part of the joy of the Sonic franchise? Genuine passion and love put into the games with many weird and rough around the edges games that don't quite hit the mark sprinkled with some genuine inspiration and brilliance that created a number of classics and a number of endearing "Almost" titles. Add in a touch of madness, a ton of fun and a huge hefty dose of Cheese and you have the Sonic Franchise, and it sounds like the movie hits all those beats.
Watched it today with my dad and brothers, personally i think that this is definetely one of the better video game movies, it sticks out like a sore thumb, but in a good way.

I'd like to note that, in that Red Carpet picture of Jirard and Amanda at 2:20, I'm 90% sure they are subtly dressed up as Sonic and Amy, and that is adorable.
I actually loved the movie, and loved how they set themselves up for future movies instead of just jumping into a movie based on a game without a backstory.
I wasn't very interested in the movie up until now. I was curious, especially since i've been hearing good/great reviews so far. Your review, and perspective makes me want to go see it. Thanks Jirard! Keep up the great work!

I loved watching this and sharing that piece of my childhood with the original games with my 5 year old son. I was born in 1986 so I was 5 in 1991 when we first got the original game. Now my son has that same initial love for the little blue rascal. Yes I thanked the appropriate people on Twitter for this father-son bonding moment. Now if you'll excuse me I'm taking my son to school in a few hours. I'm going to wake him up and play some of the original game.

I really like this movie review idea for future vids. My only gripe is that I think it makes the most sense for future reviews to still be video game movies, and to have some sort of a rating system. Great vid as always sir
Longclaw reminds me of the owl who guarded the emeralds in the knothole sonic cartoon, she also only appears before sonic was about to meet knuckles, though the series never came back.
I saw this movie with my sister, we grew up playing the games together and watching Sonic X. It was an amazing! We had such a great time watching it and recognizing some of the references. The redesign is SO GOOD! Sonic looks great! I loved hearing your perspective on the movie. Hadn't thought about seeing it with the old model, but now I'm curious. That would be a cool special feature/option on the blu ray.
Great video! They better make a sequel, I'm interested in seeing how they throw more Sonic stuff in there while still making a sensible movie. And while I see how the flossing can be cringy, I think we're not only beyond the point of when flossing is cool, but also when it's cringy, and now I look at it like "oh yeah, that's just the result of being stuck in a cave for ten years Sonic."
This movie was just so great. And I loved the easter egg hunt in the movie. The movie was fun I loved Sonics new design. Carrey was great in the movie and made Robotnik his own
It’s always cool when one of these gaming icons that we in the gaming sphere all know and grew up with are suddenly thrust into the spotlight of the broad, general internet space. It gives us an opportunity to enjoy and reflect on just how important games and gaming culture is, even to those that don’t really play video games so much.
I'd love to see more of you talking about movies, and not just video game movies, either! I love how you explain your thoughts and it kinda feels like talking about a movie with you.
It was a fun movie. A basic by the numbers set up with a cartoon character on a road trip, but the characters of Sonic does help make it more enjoyable. Now that it has essentially proven itself in the box office I hope the studio will allow for the sequel to be a lot more by exploring the world of Sonic, having his friend be apart of the adventure, introduce the Chaos Emerald, and having Jim Carrey go full Eggman like he was near the end of the film. Like if we can have the next Sonic Movie be more like a comic book movie with a grand adventure that would be great.
Well we have tails, assumedly from his world, trying to find sonic. And eggman set up to discover a way to jump between worlds, with an impetus to find the world where this apparent infinite energy source hedgehog came from. Could really see that eggman discovering sonics world, and the chaos emeralds, being what drove tails to find sonic itfp
I wish I could say 'I'm going to the theater to watch this!' but my life doesn't let me do that. The second this hits TH-cam movies, I'm buying it there.
I enjoyed it. The first movie I went to the movies to see in two years. Looking forward to a sequel. Sonic 2 will introduce Tails like in the game of the same name
BTW, given how Sonic's quills output a lot of energy and how his power worked at the end, why the Echidnas are after him, and how Tails is able to track him at all, I honestly think that Sonic IS a Chaos Emerald. Somehow, he has the Chaos Emerald's power inside of him, at least one of them.
I didn’t mind James Marsden’s character, I thought he worked pretty well. But I think it could be a problem if they keep him in the forefront in sequels
I loved the movie. So many references! But if you aren’t a Sonic fan, I don’t know if it’s for you. I on the others hand, am a die hard Sonic fan, so I loved it! 😊😄
I thought it was fun definitely. I mean considering its Sonic the Hedgehog, I wasn't expecting anything special, but I'm surprised at how "not terrible" it was. I loved all the Sega/Sonic references too from the title intro to the easter eggs like Robotnik's playlist.
Whatever your opinion on the movie is, if your one of the people who really complained about the 1st trailer, go see it. Because the vfx studio that had to redo Sonic got shut down, because of the extra work load, I believe Which is strange that fans have that type of power. I think Studios should listen to fans initially, but I don't think fans should be able to outcry to the point of insanity.
It shut down because of the parent company mis-managment of the studio and were having budget cuts and decided to just get rid of the studio, it wasn't really that related to Sonic
@@TheRealUnkn0wn_289 but that does tie in to how instead of having to work primarily on other paying projects, but they had to focus more energy and resource on Sonic.

For now but the novelization reveals that her kind has always protected Sonic's world. Also the echidnas from the beginning were following orders from the warlords.
...
Either way, I hope we get to see more of longclaw in the sequel along with Tails & Knuckles.
@@Invidente7 Now i'm interessed in the novelization 😍
10:31 Waitwaitwait, how is friendship a non-Sonic theme? Isn't that the whole point of Heroes and Unleashed?
Unleashed = not really
Heroes = absolutely
Adventure also kinda did this with the positive chaos energy.
@@sayer4148 Also Forces
Nanda I Kadek How?? Did we play the same Unleashed?
Heroes: Kinda, but it was done so haphazardly it's kinda moot.
Unleashed: MUCH better, but there's an element missing. It's on the tip of my tongue...would it have been better if it was Sonic and Tails instead of Sonic and Chip?
Movie: (Chef's Kiss)
"So Jirard, do you have a girlfriend?"
"Yes."
"Can we see her?"
"... She's from Canada"
I enjoyed the film. It had moments that I recognized weren’t for me and aimed towards kids, but overall a solid video game movie. The end credits screen had my partner and I screaming! I hope there’s a sequel! 💙
I haven’t seen the movie yet. That being said this is the first movie in several years that I’m genuinely excited to see. Y’all could have your Avengers and your Batman’s I have the blue hedgehog I am good!
I just finished watching it earlier, I actually liked it, With multiple people thinking it may not be good.
I really love this movie as a Sonic fan. Jim Carrey was amazing as Robotnik.
Why? They didn't do nearly as good of a job as they could have done.
Me walking into the theaters for the sonic movie: feels like its going to be bad.
Me after I've watched the movie: its not bad?
It's not good either.
@@SirBlackReeds Hey but at least it's not terrible
@@worthyspear4022 That's setting the bar awfully low.
How can you say it's not good?
I friggin loved this movie. Even with the old design i knew this movie was gonna be good, and it eclipsed all my expectations. I’m SO stoked for a sequel....if we ever get one
#Sonicmovie2
Well, with the mid-credit scene, I think that's the plan! 🤩😍
Oh we’re definitely getting one
Jim may have "Carrey" this whole movie on his own, but Benny Boy still deserves some credit here and there!
Both Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey did great in their roles.
@@GoldStorm07 Still can wait to see Tails In the sequel cause I wanna fly high with my ol' buddy again since my Elementary School Days were I got Introduced to him after class as one of the teachers were nice enough to let us play the Sega Genesis or least with Adventure 1 and 2. *Signs* I truly miss those memories.
The Schwartz is strong in this one.
@@grfrjiglstan So was Randy Chungnam , Dewy (2017) , and even Leo (2018) he's a fun guy once you get to know him and did alright as Sonic and all agree everyone got their wishes hearing him voiced as the new Sonic.
Ben does an awesome job honestly he could be sonic in the games and I won't complain at all
Honestly, I would have loved for the movie to be about Longclaw and the world Sonic comes from rather than just another "Toon in our world" movie.
Maybe that’s what we’ll see in the sequel!
I heard some stuff about the sequel exploring their home world!!
I really love the dedication you and Amanda made to the film premiere by dressing up as a Sonic and Amy. I saw the post on Instagram last week, but now it finally clicked for me and it's 100% adorable and admirable :)
One thing I really want to see is if they'll do professor gerald down the road
I loved the movie, I'm so glad we got to see Jim Carrey use his manic energy that we've seen in his movies like the mask and Ace ventura. Jim Carrey is back baby, and I hope he is back for good. Jim Carrey has always held a dear place in my heart
6:34 "He has Tails, he has Amy."
Knuckles: "Am i a joke 2 u?"
I enjoy this movie, I had a lot of fun watching, it’s a great family film for kids to enjoy and for Sonic fans
It's good that this movie isn't going to the bad video game movies list
Also, SANIC IS CANNON!!
Watched it today with my dad and brothers, personally i think that this is definetely one of the better video game movies, it sticks out like a sore thumb, but in a good way.
Not exactly.

Ay thats cool! This movie deserves recognition for the producers’ efforts this past year
Im honestly so glad the movie came out good, its what we needed for the franchise.
But it's not good. It's only okay. If it were bread then it would be white bread, specifically Wonder Bread.
jacoblgames
What kind of comparison is that? 😂
I really enjoyed getting to hear your take on Sonic, especially with your background in film! I wouldn’t mind seeing a miniseries about video game films on The Completionist!
I’ve loved film and I’ve loved sonic for as long as I could remember and seeing the long time sonic fan service in this film was just incredible to me. I loved this movie, I’ve wanted this movie for a long time and I’m so grateful for what we did get here. I personally loved your video just now. You didn’t show bias you acknowledged the ups and downs, talked about the behind the scenes aspect of the film. Loved all the cool props you got from the film that’s really cool, yeah Jirard I love what you do and this was really nice to see, I wasn’t mad you didn’t show a new Completionist game episode. I like this change of pace you had here and I hope you get to keep on marking whatever you want to make, I’ll always tune in to watch
I'd like to note that, in that Red Carpet picture of Jirard and Amanda at 2:20, I'm 90% sure they are subtly dressed up as Sonic and Amy, and that is adorable.
This is really cool.
Also, dude, you're so good at movie reviews. I loved listening to this and hearing you get down into the details. More of this!
I actually loved the movie, and loved how they set themselves up for future movies instead of just jumping into a movie based on a game without a backstory.
I thought sonic the hedgehog was truly amazing especially for a nerd like me.
Jim Carrey killed it in this, it's so good to see him back, especially since he was basically evil Ace Ventura
Eh, it needed more Jim Carrey.
@@SirBlackReeds true, I can't wait to see what he does in the sequel
I wasn't very interested in the movie up until now. I was curious, especially since i've been hearing good/great reviews so far. Your review, and perspective makes me want to go see it. Thanks Jirard! Keep up the great work!
I got to see this movie with like 12 of my friends, and I haven't enjoyed seeing a movie in SO long. It brought me back to my love of Sonic, and my best friend was actually rlly happy which made me happy and like...yeah im rlly ready for part 2.
Heh, blue carpet, that's clever
Wait, theirs a mushroom hill zone? I thought they where just ripping on Mario
Same.
Sonic & Knuckles
It’s the first zone of Sonic and Knuckles.
Loved the movie, loved the review, would definetly love a sequel to the movie along with more gaming movie reviews? Discussions? Idk but I liked it
How did you find the second movie?~
I loved watching this and sharing that piece of my childhood with the original games with my 5 year old son. I was born in 1986 so I was 5 in 1991 when we first got the original game. Now my son has that same initial love for the little blue rascal.
Yes I thanked the appropriate people on Twitter for this father-son bonding moment. Now if you'll excuse me I'm taking my son to school in a few hours. I'm going to wake him up and play some of the original game.
Considering how much money this film made, especially on opening week, it’s fair to say a sequel is inevitable.
Unless really starts to have bad dropoffs in the weeks following.
jacoblgames what the hell is your damage, you seem obsessed with replying in every comment chain with something that disparages the movie.
@@VitaEmerald324 That's where your wrong. I only replied to a few.
jacoblgames it’s interesting that that is the only objection you have.
@@VitaEmerald324 That's what your previous response is dependent on. I'm obsessed because I'm replying in every comment chain, except I'm not, so your argument crumbles at its foundation.
So jealous of you Jirard. I been a Sonic nut my whole life too. Born in '86, i essentially grew up on Sonic.
Just finished the review, I loved the Sonic movie, its not film of the year or oscar bait by any stretch, it was just a fun movie to enjoy with friends or family.
I love that you did a review of the Sonic Movie. I loved the film and really hope it gets a sequel. ❤️
Jirard the "Com-PINGAS-ionist"!
I'm good at names everyone, I swear...
I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I’ll totally go see the inevitable sequel. And obviously the Tails cameo was awesome!
You are so lucky to have a close connection to the movie! I’m jealous as heck!
Sonic's just a teen after all so it makes sense
6:00 for the actual review
Fuck that.
But thanks
This movie was just so great. And I loved the easter egg hunt in the movie. The movie was fun I loved Sonics new design. Carrey was great in the movie and made Robotnik his own
I really enjoyed this, and i really enjoyed your insight on the film industry and how standard films normally work. It's a nice learning experience :)
A completionist run of every feature on a DVD including the movie itself lol. Also the Sonic movie is great
It’s always cool when one of these gaming icons that we in the gaming sphere all know and grew up with are suddenly thrust into the spotlight of the broad, general internet space. It gives us an opportunity to enjoy and reflect on just how important games and gaming culture is, even to those that don’t really play video games so much.
Personally I got so nervous when they were about to show Sonics feet while taking his shoes off ,luckily they didn’t pheww 😰
Even if they did wouldn't be the first time it's happened
they showed his socks dirty and torned, that's more than enough material for... them...
@@NamelessOne91 *oh nO*
But hey he has little fur paws as many animals have, it's not that bad. At least it's not a human foot.
We did see his paws under the torn socks though.
I'd love to see more of you talking about movies, and not just video game movies, either! I love how you explain your thoughts and it kinda feels like talking about a movie with you.
So would the end credits of marvel movies be like the completion reward?
It was a fun movie. A basic by the numbers set up with a cartoon character on a road trip, but the characters of Sonic does help make it more enjoyable. Now that it has essentially proven itself in the box office I hope the studio will allow for the sequel to be a lot more by exploring the world of Sonic, having his friend be apart of the adventure, introduce the Chaos Emerald, and having Jim Carrey go full Eggman like he was near the end of the film. Like if we can have the next Sonic Movie be more like a comic book movie with a grand adventure that would be great.
imagine how cool a sequel to this, that's set entirely on sonics world, would be? hopefully that's what happens.
Love this stuff!
I didn’t mind James Marsden’s character, I thought he worked pretty well. But I think it could be a problem if they keep him in the forefront in sequels

Because the vfx studio that had to redo Sonic got shut down, because of the extra work load, I believe
Which is strange that fans have that type of power.
Imma be real with you Jirard.
I haven't seen ANYBODY complaining about Roger Craig Smith not voicing Sonic in the Movie and I can tell you that personally, I would not have liked this movie nearly as much if he did (probably wouldn't have watched it twice either. I can't stand Roger as Sonic and I sincerely hope Ben replaces him in the games).
Hey can you please review the Megaman Zero ZX Legacy Collection when it comes out. Megaman technically had a movie in Japan( an OVA but it counts).
