DX has many presentation flaws and bugs that ruin Sonic Adventure, it's like a really bad Special Edition of Star Wars.
The fixes that the conversion mod does to bring the game to its ultimate form honestly put it in the 9-9.5/10 range for me. Even with the jank that's inherent to the game, Sonic Adventure at least to me seems to hold up a LOT more than most games from its time. And, yeah, this does mean I'm one of those sacrilegious saps who considers SA1 to be better than Mario 64.
Sonic Adventure DX for PC is the better way to go because of the fantastic amount of mods avalible that not only help fix the bugs but add features like Super Sonic in normal levels and additional skins textures and some new and older levels.
Yeah, but you're saying it's good because people went and mod this game for almost 15 years so it could eventually be a decent version true to the original game (And it's still really far from done)
Why's everyone roasting Tails' voice all the time? "creepily childish voice" WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE'S VOICED BY AN ACTUAL CHILD. Tails Voice acting isnt very good but neither is everyone else's. His voice itself is fine. -
It's creepy and weird because he's the only character who sounds like a child and he isn't a child and isn't supposed to be a child. All the characters are supposed to be adults or teens, so they should all sound like adults or teens. Tails shouldn't sound like a 5 year old with a mouthful of Cheerios. If all or most of the cast was voiced by children you could get away with it by saying "well everybody else sounds like that" but since he's the only actual child voice in the game, it creates dissonance.

I love that Jirard actually gives sonic games a chance instead of just hating on it and looking for glitches to exploit that "proves" their point, like seriously I've never had such glitches appear on the first level that others have, but I did play it on the gamecube
thanks for this dude, people these days (especially big youtubers) seem to love to hate on sonic and always poke fun at all the 3d games so i am happy you have your own mind for this play through, great job! :D
3:19 I think you mean “Open up your heart up” my dude. Great video as always, Jirard! I haven’t played this game in years! Might as well give it another shot soon.
Actually, it's an outdated modpack featuring bonuses from existing mods that's been basically superseded by SADX Mod Installer which installs the same mods but gives you more config options and is always up-to-date.
Your feelings on how you don't remember the glitches is how I remember Sonic '06 when it came out. I remembered loving the game and had a great time playing it with friends. When I was in high school, I decided to play it again and saw all the problems, and the negative comments made sense. I'll hold on to the good memories of the game.
When I was a kid I used to play this all the time on the dreamcast! It makes me sad to revisit and see all the flaws I could never see before, but it also makes me feel nostalgic and happy to relive simpler times when I thought this games graphics were as good as we could ever get :p
The definitive edition of Sonic Adventure is on Steam with a specific mod/mod loader called "Better SADX" it has a thriving community and is updated all the time still to this day. It fixes all those bugs and makes the graphics and controls much much better as well as restoring all the good things from the Dreamcast version. Like all the extra foliage, trees and photorealistic textures the dev team got from pictures they took in some real world locations! Not to mention it allows you to modify the game in an infinite number of ways! Things like changing your character on the fly in game with a click of a button (on your controller!) and playing as Super Sonic in any level as well! Just like you've always wanted!!! You can even play as Eggman and Tikal too! As a die hard fan of this game, I HIGHLY recommend this version for you Jirard! I personally love it!
I can fully recognize how flawed and broken this game is, BUT I can honestly say it is still so much fun to play and mess around with Sonic's movement.
If we are talking about glitches, those are solved with the original dreamcast version and PC with BetterSADX or Dreamcast Conversion mods or SADX Mod Manager. About the now dated 90's style of the presentation for the story and Big the Cat, there is no way to fix those.
Agreed. The Spin Dash is so broken in Sonic Adventure (and Adventure 2 to a lesser extent) and it's so much fun just dicking around with it. You can use it to get the Crystal Ring early (thank god) and even 11 of the 12 Adventure Field Emblems with Sonic alone... though you will die getting the one outside of Red Mountain.
Awesome episode as usual, i enjoy the couch setup you use in these videos, you do so much hard work and i don't know how you do it but remember that you have hundreds of thousands of appreciative fans, love ya man
Disappointing thing about this port is that the Gamecube release actually had a better completionist bonus, where you would gradually unlock playable emulated versions of all 12 of the Game Gear games as you collected emblems. I get *why* they removed them from the more recent ports, but it was really a cool feature that was unfortunate to see missing.
*Didn't You Know?* Sonic Adventure DX is the sequel to Sonic Adventure 2, the beloved first entry in the 3D Sonic series. This game was notably less popular due to the lack of Shadow the Hedgehog after his death in the first game. However, fan outcry eventually led to them retconning the ending and bringing Shadow back as a playable character in the reboot of the Sonic franchise, Sonic Heroes.
Thanks you for supporting the open hand foundation Jirard (if I may), it really means a lot ,I’m just a fan of the channel and I can’t say that I have been effected by dementia however my mom and my grandma both have. ''The introduction of the homing attack.'' kind of true it's where most people associate the birth of the homing attack because of the game's popular status, but sonic 3D blast did introduce a similar ability with the yellow shield powerup. (So maybe)
Gold shield was more limited in its homing capabilities and was more like a drop. The homing attack is kinda like if you mixed that homing with the fire shield's dash move, but the most significant aspect of the homing attack is that it is a standard move, not a powerup. Also way more usable.
I'm happy that FINALLY, someone gives Sonic Adventure a good break. Seriously, I'm sick and tired of so many people acting like "Oh Sonic has ALWAYS been bad in 3D when literally the first run was great. The Music, the gameplay, hell I'd argue that even though the acting is bad in many regards, the voices themselves are great fits. Your favorite is Ryan Drummond, and he is great. But I'll see your Ryan with my Dean Bristo. The guy is GREAT as Eggman, and it's a shame he passed when he did. Honestly, he's the other voice I think of aside from Mike Pollock when it comes to Eggman. A perfect mix of Sinister, mad, and even a little goofy.
I love this game and Sonic Adventure 2 so much. They are my absolute favorite Sonic games and even though every sonic game has excellent music, Crush 40's prog rock stylings are a match made in heaven for Sonic. Jun Senoue's Petrucci-esque guitar licks are amazing, and they never should've stopped making Sonic's music.
New Game Plus is always a treat. Not only are they purely entertaining but it's always great to see how much Jirard has improved as a creator and reviewer.
Honestly it's legitimately amusing to see that you put in the time to obtain an All S Chao. I've been speedrunning the game a decade with what, 5000 hours? More? And I'm yet to even go through that hell. You have a lot of respect from me.
It's not really a part of the completion process since even a chao with poor stats can net you the emblems if it is fully maxed, but he was talking in stream about how he didn't do it for the original video and wanted to do it for this one. Actually, watching him do it on stream inspired me to go back to the game and finally do it myself like I planned to almost a decade ago.
Glad to know the 360 version is glitchy. I was starting to hate on it too. I loved my original Dreamcast version, was never as glitchy. I never played the Gamecube version, but glad to hear it was better than the 360 version. I tell people if the can handle the subtitles, put the voices in Japanese. It seems to match up with their mouths better, and it just sounds better. Even though Big's levels are my least favorite too, I enjoyed them because they were a breather from all the stresses of the other characters. I always played his story second to last as that breather. Played Gamma's story last because it was my favorite. Loved the music too. One of my favorite soundtracks too. Hard to pick a favorite track indeed, but I was always partial to At Dawn for Speed Highway (the end of Sonic's part of that level or Knuckles level). Always was a nice relaxing jam. Great review as always.
Yeah for some reason every new ports of Sonic Adventure 1&2 get worse. Sucks too because the original versions, and even the GameCube versions in their own way, do actually hold up way better.
As a kid, I tried to unlock metal Sonic, but I always thought it was a myth. You wanna know why? My PC version of DX would not generate a fish big enough to fulfill the third mission of Big the Cat's FIRST level. I concluded that there was an oversight in which it was assumed 'The first level is the easy one, why put big fish that could break your fishing line in it,' but seeing this video tells me the PC version may have been a disaster of a port. What's worse is that I saved Big's mission for my LAST emblem to complete the game after a first attempt was unfruitful. That moment, happening when I was around 11, surely put me off from trying to complete games.
yeah the lipsync actually being animated to the Japanese audio doesn't really help with the overly animated mouths but flaws & all I still think this game aged kinda well hopefully Iizuka actually gets to make the SA1 remake he said he (& pretty much every actual fan) would love to see made ...a remake that if it happens then it moves the actual fishing to a mini-game in the Chao Garden & just makes Big gameplay about flipping every table, car & robot that gets between him & Froggy
IIRC, there were rumours that Big would have had a gun. These rumours were probably due to people remembering Big's VA, Jon St John, for his role as Duke Nukem. Though considering how Big was in Sonic Adventure, I feel like they should have redone the character as some sort of big game hunter a'la Safari Joe (does it again!), where he's basically tracking down the most dangerous robots in search of Froggy. Not only would that gameplay style have been less of an antithesis to the spirit of Sonic mechanically, but it would have been a fun nod to Jon St John basically being Duke. "It's time to track robots and drink milk. And I'm all outta milk..."
Would have fit with Big's MO as well, if not better. But if the existence of pure fishing sim games on the Dreamcast is any indicator, I would say that fishing sims were quite popular in Japan at the time of release for the original game, more so than I would think for hunting/tracking sims.
I'm pretty sure everybody here's watched Gamegrumps playthrough of SA:DX and saw Arin's spaz out over Big levels, so I'm pretty sure they weren't surprised. =P
Adventure being a good game already means a remake could avoid being disappointing like so many 3d Sonic games. For that reason I'd rather Adventure and 2 get remade than Sega making a third one.
I don't. We didn't have a fully original 3D Sonic game since Sonic Colors. Nearly a decade of unoriginality. I want new stuff! Remake could be kept for 40th anniversary, but now I am starved for new adventures. Well, at least there is Spark the Electric Jester 2.
Me too, a remake of either adventure game with improved controls, visuals, and camera would be amazing. The second adventure port for Steam is so TERRIBLE! Really killed me so I took to playing the Gamecube version instead.
@@zeroattentiongaming820 all we need is adventure 2 style gameplay with new moves playable tails and knuckles and chao gardens to justify collecting enemy drops rings and emblems. Just bring back the chao garden dammit!!!

I really like how people act as if they love fishing mini games in EVERY other game, but all of a sudden have a problem when it comes to Big lol. It's not THAT hard XD.
It's kinda poorly implemented in SA tbh. The lure is janky to handle, and the fish themselves are unnecessarily tedious to catch, not to mention the terrain can easily make you lose your catch. Larger fish can easily force you into a state where you have no control over the lure for long periods of time, even a guaranteed period of time at the beginning of the catch, making it difficult to impossible to catch them. On top of the poor mechanics, there is literally no incentive to go around exploring for each fishing spot. While there are different species of fish, the game treats them all the same, and you get nothing for catching them except a score bonus based on how much they weigh. And each type of fish can be found everywhere in the stage. Froggy himself is always hidden in the first accessible body of water, never any kind of challenge to find except for the bare minimum of level diving in Hot Shelter. All of this is a shame, because the three stages that have entire sections of map exclusive to this character have some of the coolest places visually to explore, like the underwater cave in Emerald Coast or the pool in Ice Cap with the dinosaur bones. A decent character with great open-world stages meets one of the worst fishing simulators to ever reach US consoles, on a fast-paced game where it is already completely missing the target audience- that's how I describe Big and his stages.
Thank you Jirard! Great video, great game. Sonic Adventure has my favorite story in a Sonic game and opened my heart for a 3d Sonic games. Although I played a PC version and it was a bit frustrating sometimes, I loved every single minute of it. Even Bid the Cat.
Steam Version + Better SADX + Mods is still probably the best way to play SADX for me. Being able to play as Super Sonic in levels, getting any character into any stage you want, the (much better) Dreamcast lighting system & level geometry with the improved DX character models; that stuff is really cool and adds tons of replay value to the game
Don't forget: the PC/Steam versions can be modded. You can give the game widescreen support, original visuals, the ability to play as Super Sonic in all levels, and re-add the Game Gear games. But yeah, this game wasn't all too fun to complete all 3 times that I did this... but it is a fun game.
Just finished the sonic campaign on 360 last night after never having played it back in the day and it is fantastic. You can see where mario sunshine actually stole from sonic adventures style and controls. It definitely deserves credit for how well it runs and how clear the graphics are, it really is a great transition to 3D for sonic, he really controls like youd expect. It also has justthe right amount of jank to give it that sega charm. Loved it. Cant wait to play other 3D sonic games now! I might try some of the other campaigns for the different characters too
Jirard is doing the lord's work, as usual! As for what new games we'd like to see, how about tackling more graphic adventures? Most require a single require playthrough, they aren't usually awfully long games, they tend to have an amazing sense of humour that Jirard would surely love, and they really could use a lot more love than they usually get. I long for the day Broken Sword will be featured in The Completionist. Or, heck, even Professor Layton!
I completed Next Order in January. It took me 95 hours, so it is not THAT much over what it took him to complete Sonic Adventure. But now that I think about it I didn't technically fully complete it, I only went as far as the platinum. I was still missing some Digimon, but that's about it.
When I beat Sonic Adventure on Xbox, I completed all 60 Missions in Mission Mode, and the achievement never unlocked. When I went back to Mission Mode, the missions were glitched in an eternal loop where I could find completed missions, complete them again, and then they'd reappear again, all the whilst showing as completed in my menu, making it 100% impossible to unlock Metal Sonic or earn the achievement. This was years ago, and every time I went back, it never changed.
I always felt like DX was a downgrade that only just forced the SA2 style onto the game that was better with the cuter models. The missions didn't add anything for me. It's nice that the modding community has restored a lot of the original charm, but I'll keep playing the original on both my Dreamcast and on the Redream emulator. Anyways, I'm very glad there's at least one mainstream TH-camr who actually loves Sonic.
Because Jirard implied that Crush 40 made Sa1's soundtrack, I feel obligated to correct: Jun Senoue, the guitarist of Crush 40, composed the soundtrack. Crush 40 is the duo of Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli, the singer of Open Your Heart. So, technically, the only Crush 40 song in the game is Open Your Heart. But obviously Jun Senoue's influence is everywhere in this game, so a lot of songs sound like Crush 40 even when they technically aren't.
Personally, i like the adventure games more because they are similar to the genesis games. Generations is also a good game but i never liked the boost formula.
Yeah even in 3D sections boost sonic plays like a 2D game. You shift lanes in 2D fashion, mostly move forward, and the 3D sections are less common like drifting. Then actual 2D sections furthers the problem. I'd like to see an improved version of the adventure or heroes (no not shadow the hedgehog) in the future as boost isn't that fun. Just lots of quick reactions gameplay

And, yeah, this does mean I'm one of those sacrilegious saps who considers SA1 to be better than Mario 64.

Why's everyone roasting Tails' voice all the time? "creepily childish voice" WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE'S VOICED BY AN ACTUAL CHILD. Tails Voice acting isnt very good but neither is everyone else's. His voice itself is fine. -
Here i COME, Sonic
It's creepy and weird because he's the only character who sounds like a child and he isn't a child and isn't supposed to be a child. All the characters are supposed to be adults or teens, so they should all sound like adults or teens. Tails shouldn't sound like a 5 year old with a mouthful of Cheerios. If all or most of the cast was voiced by children you could get away with it by saying "well everybody else sounds like that" but since he's the only actual child voice in the game, it creates dissonance.

Why does every reviewer use the xbox 360 spinoff of a remake of a remake of a remake instead of the original game?
Your feelings on how you don't remember the glitches is how I remember Sonic '06 when it came out. I remembered loving the game and had a great time playing it with friends. When I was in high school, I decided to play it again and saw all the problems, and the negative comments made sense. I'll hold on to the good memories of the game.
This is a fun one to complete. Yes, even Big's missions are fun.
When I was a kid I used to play this all the time on the dreamcast! It makes me sad to revisit and see all the flaws I could never see before, but it also makes me feel nostalgic and happy to relive simpler times when I thought this games graphics were as good as we could ever get :p
Trashing on 3D Sonic is indeed old. We need more positivity with 3D Sonic.
Won't happen with all the delusional classic fans
I still prefer the original one, but BetterSADX at least makes the game better
I can fully recognize how flawed and broken this game is, BUT I can honestly say it is still so much fun to play and mess around with Sonic's movement.
If we are talking about glitches, those are solved with the original dreamcast version and PC with BetterSADX or Dreamcast Conversion mods or SADX Mod Manager.
About the now dated 90's style of the presentation for the story and Big the Cat, there is no way to fix those.
Star masterc
I don’t think they should be fixed since they add to the game’s charm. Also it makes sense since this game was made in the 90s.
Cmon play the dreamcast version (the best version) it has less bugs and better textures and models.

Also in the Game Cube version you unlock sonic game gear games as you get more emblems
Underrated completion bonus for sure. Games within games are always fun.

Oof that intro didn't age well
''The introduction of the homing attack.'' kind of true it's where most people associate the birth of the homing attack because of the game's popular status, but sonic 3D blast did introduce a similar ability with the yellow shield powerup.

What the heck I was literally just completing Amy's campaign in SADX as this video came out!
Fuck her story stressed out when I was younger. That robot gave me nightmares.
So awesome that you're working with Nintendo for indieland! Jirard, and all the rest of the team, you guys rule.
I glad you actually like this game and don't act like it's just a joke as everyone else does, this game does have some actual really good gameplay.
This game was my childhood. First game I ever owned and spent many hours on it. I still replay every year. Best nostalgia game ever.
yeah the lipsync actually being animated to the Japanese audio doesn't really help with the overly animated mouths
but flaws & all I still think this game aged kinda well hopefully Iizuka actually gets to make the SA1 remake he said he (& pretty much every actual fan) would love to see made ...a remake that if it happens then it moves the actual fishing to a mini-game in the Chao Garden & just makes Big gameplay about flipping every table, car & robot that gets between him & Froggy
This game has an amazing soundtrack
I'm pretty sure everybody here's watched Gamegrumps playthrough of SA:DX and saw Arin's spaz out over Big levels, so I'm pretty sure they weren't surprised. =P
I hope the rumor about the sonic adventure remake is true.

Oh hey, it's the video on one of my favorite Beard Bros playthroughs. Awesome!
Thank you Jirard! Great video, great game. Sonic Adventure has my favorite story in a Sonic game and opened my heart for a 3d Sonic games. Although I played a PC version and it was a bit frustrating sometimes, I loved every single minute of it. Even Bid the Cat.

SONIC AND MARIO GAMES COMPLETION CONFIRMED, GUYS
Steam Version + Better SADX + Mods is still probably the best way to play SADX for me. Being able to play as Super Sonic in levels, getting any character into any stage you want, the (much better) Dreamcast lighting system & level geometry with the improved DX character models; that stuff is really cool and adds tons of replay value to the game
That music was really good when indie land was playing 10/10 music for a moment
Don't forget: the PC/Steam versions can be modded. You can give the game widescreen support, original visuals, the ability to play as Super Sonic in all levels, and re-add the Game Gear games. But yeah, this game wasn't all too fun to complete all 3 times that I did this... but it is a fun game.

Plz complete digimon next order or cyber sleuth or hackers memory
While I'd love for him to do that, we cant do that to the beardman
Hackers memory ain’t that hard to complete unlike next order so I get what your saying
I completed Next Order in January. It took me 95 hours, so it is not THAT much over what it took him to complete Sonic Adventure. But now that I think about it I didn't technically fully complete it, I only went as far as the platinum. I was still missing some Digimon, but that's about it.
To complete next order it take about 110 hours
To be fair you can just leave the console on and idle grind in slueth and memory
Heck on you for the Tails voice actor hate. He was cute! Otherwise loved it.
@Jesse Quarnstrom In the original Sonic Adventure it was a boy
Glad to see this game still holds up for you.
Sonic Generations is the best 3D Sonic game....
To me. Sonic Adventure 1+2 is a close second tho.
Generations was really good. Felt more 2.5 d almost. Lots of 2d sections even a few in the 3d levels.
Rob M
Modern sonic was 3D (with 2d)
Classic sonic was 2.5d
Personally, i like the adventure games more because they are similar to the genesis games. Generations is also a good game but i never liked the boost formula.
Yeah even in 3D sections boost sonic plays like a 2D game. You shift lanes in 2D fashion, mostly move forward, and the 3D sections are less common like drifting. Then actual 2D sections furthers the problem. I'd like to see an improved version of the adventure or heroes (no not shadow the hedgehog) in the future as boost isn't that fun. Just lots of quick reactions gameplay
@@SuperSSSSooonniicccc Windy Valley Autodemo from Sonic Adventure it's like a stage straight from Sonic 3&K or something like that, meanwhile, a stage from Sonic Forces is basically a straight line and a boost to win mess. Ok, who is with me for a remake for this game? Or better, a Adventure collection with Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes with the name "The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog", with grafics similar to the beauty of Sonic Unleashed, and refined gameplay and better camera
If they put the effort to put in Heroes, they should put the effort in to add Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), with the current voice cast and an option for the originals.
Why I say that for Shadow and ‘06, is because they basically share the same gameplay styles, and do deserve to be recognized as well.
@@Josh-The_Spooky_Bastard- I would call them for "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog: The Dark Age" LMAO, but it could work with enough effort and help from fans who loves this game, search for how many fans are trying to remake these games, even if people say these games are bad, we love them, that's one of the things I love about the Sonic fanbase, they really do see the potential in these games
