The Banana Phone Is Back: Nokia 8110 4G Hands-On

  • "Matrix Phone." "Banana Phone." "Shameless appeal to nostalgia." Whatever your preferred nomenclature, Nokia calls it the "8110 4G." It's a modernized revamp of the original Nokia 8110, the mobile phone that first popularized the slider form factor back in 1997. And for sentimental suckers like MrMobile, it's 79 Euros as good as spent. Join me for the Nokia 8110 4G Hands-On!

      It's difficult to find a second-hand phone with a 2 weeks of battery life. My current phone doesn't last a day of use without running out of battery. I need an another phone for just being reachable and this is going to be it. I have so many good memories with my original Nokia banana phone.

      Nokia is giving people who want long battery life what they want. Who else in Mobile is doing this ?
      Besides it's a nice change from nondescript slabs of glass and metal all trying to outdo each other .
      There was a reason Nokia were the #1 selling mobile phones of all time. I've had many since my first in 2000 and they earned the reputation for good durable phones .
      Good job Nokia ! Bring the 8110 to the US please !

      Flipping is classier than sliding. Seeing someone trying to slide a phone one handed through an airport with luggage in the other hand and a bag under his arm as he keeps shakeweighting a slider phone going 'hello? John hello? Goddamit' arm flailing harder as he drops his briefcase and for some reason marbles are spilling everywhere and his phone flies out of his hand and snaps in two, breaking him down into tears.... Well it's not a sight for 2018. This was his ringtone BTW. th-cam.com/video/PQJjx19sRbs/w-d-xo.html

    • @user-hm9mj1hc3j
      @user-hm9mj1hc3j 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agree, I own the new 3310 as well and frankly quite amazed with its durability, and more important I don't have to carry charger or extra battery anywhere I go as it would never fail me on low battery issues.
      Never been a fan of modern smartphone like android and such, as I rarely use the feature anyway, where I only did utilize the basic texting and direct call,
      Unsophisticated Nokia is a perfect phone for a being like me~

      My mom almost bought a 7110 as her first phone but the only sample they had in the store had its sliding mechanism broken ... So she went to another store got a Sony CMD-J5. Great phone, with greyscale display and nice UI but if we went back to 2001 I'd be searching for another 7110.

    • @Krystalmyth
      @Krystalmyth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      danijel3672 That broken model is what we call foreshadowing lol. Spring releases are dopamine injectors to the user, but the arthritis inducer in the phone. Springs get loose, snap, kink, tangle, corrode, and sometimes vanish without a trace. Still it's 2018, I'd have hoped someone said 'hold my beer' and figured out a way to make it happen anyway ... But no. Sliders aren't classy. Flip phones are classier than sliders. Springloaders being people back to switch blades, which are illegal and who doesn't want to get that I could get tackled onto the pavement by some frustrated cop because of how cool my phone is feeling.

    • @danijel-ch2gk
      @danijel-ch2gk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I've used the 8110 4G since launch but never done a review of it. For a while one section of keys tended to double-tap, then it moved onto another set of keys, now it's reliable and that's the one and only complaint I can raise. It splits in three parts if it flies out of my pocket and onto a hard surface but I put it together again, as if new! Clear on both ends of a call. Best under $100 deal there is, unless you're in an Android-or-nothing situation.

    I owned the Nokia 8110 back in the 90s the buttons were very small and fiddly to press, screen very small the new model appears to address this. Very lightweight and for me fairlyeasy to carry in a trousers pocket. Good to see these phones and pdas (Gemini from Planet Computers) making a comeback, even for pure nostalgia.

    I definitely would have gone bananas if this phone was released in 1997, back then I was using an old AudioVox MVX 502

    bro, the spring slide action from the matrix was what made the phone cool.lol
    they least they could do with the new version is giving it the spring action, and give the camera 4-8mp lol

    When people keep questioning “why this even exists?”, “why tho?”. They actually help Nokia reach the purpose of this phone. Getting back on people’s talk and head. And someone who doesnt know about Nokia Android will reply “yea, totally”, and others will tell “well, Nokia has the Android line up as well”. And then “woa, really? I’ll google it”.
    And yea, one more potential customer.

    If this phone was compatible with T-Mobile's network I was legit gonna buy it for hikes and days outside.

    Would be so cool to have one of these around to take a break from the smartphone tbh. I'll snag one if they come to the states for sure!
