Some advice for everyone trying to attempt this on your first time. Take your spark plugs out of your head. The reason why is when you go to rotate the engine over with the old belt on to get everything aligned with top dead center, it is much easier to do so when you are not fighting the pistons compressing in the cylinders. If you do not, when you try rotating the engine with the 19mm crank bolt you will hear the engine hissing as the compressed air escapes out of the valves. There is nothing wrong with it, that is how an engine sounds when turning half an RPM lol. But with the spark plugs out, the pistons and crank are free to rotate with minimal resistance. The only thing that will offer resistance other than the ever so slight drag from the actual friction of everything is the valves in the head compressing. Taking the spark plugs out just makes everything much easier to align. Obviously afterwards you need to put the spark plugs back in once the new timing belt/water pump are installed.

Just a few side notes to anyone doing this for the first time. If you Don't have a good impact pick up the crank pully tool and an extra breaker bar, if the space is too small remove the bolt from the rear motor mount and have the engine on a jack it gives you a really good amount of free play, I prefer to remove the driver side mount bracket as it helps with getting some bolts, one you have everything out clean the side of the block its not worth the risk of some shredded rubber getting into either your water pump pulley or idlers making them seize, and finally before you re torque the crank bolt turn the motor over a few times and make sure it stays in time. As always the prelude love on this channel is just amazing. It sucks to have it down for so long but some great content came out of it, thanks Trey see you in the next one!

Its normal thread. Counter Clockwise to loosen. Also, the motor spins the same direction.

This was done on an H32A VTEC (Blue Top) for whoever is curious. The process is exactly the same and most parts are interchangeable with obd1 and obd2 H22 motors except the thermostat cover and thermostat itself due to the bigger diameter that the JDM H series motors have.

Did you bend any valves? I just snapped the timing belt in my lude and I’m wondering if I need a new head?
Kyle Lloyd indeed I bent valves, in cylinders 2 and 3 to be exact, but most likely yes, the h-series engines are interference engines, so basically your pistons and valves are very close together. So just get a new head and timing kit and you should be good to go, sorry to hear about that though man!

Kyle Lloyd yeah I’ve had the same thing happen with my b16 lol those engines are stout and non interference if I remember right. But yeah h series engines are pretty fickle imo
So to set the timing I need to have the cam arrows in both up positions and the crank has to be aligned with the notch?

Before watching: I wonder if he will say to turn the exhaust cam 1 tooth advanced/forward/counter clockwise that way when you slip the belt over the exhaust cam gear and the intake it will rotate the E. Cam backwards 1 tooth and into alignment. It was quite frustrating before I figured this out!

Which marks on a flexplate(AT)/flywheel (MT) do you use to align ignition time

On this manual tensioner I see there’s the tensioner bolt but also there’s one we’re it slides too also it’s a 10 mm long bolt connect to to the water pump tho I need to install it also on your video it’s hard to see if you hade it but I don’t see it

How did you get the timing belt on with all the tension that is already there? Is there a way to loosen the tension to get that belt on while try to keep the pulleys top dead center?

Bought a 97 w possibly a bad motor for 300 buks. Im doing the timing just to be safe because i found a shredded balancer belt and the timing belt walked a little. Waiting on new belts and the manual tensioner. Video helped a lot with finding the correct timing marks. Wish me luck that it starts. Nice lude btw

So my intake can gear is about 2 teeth off. Im trying to loosen the timing belt so I can move the cam in place but all I can find online and TH-cam is timing belt removals or water pump replacement or adjustable cam gears like I just need to loosen the damn belt so If anyone can guide me to a video I would appreciate it
just picked up a 94 Si with 103k original on it and need to do this soon. think i can manage it if ive never changed a timing belt and water pump, or be careful and pay a shop?

Good day. I have a H22a1 1992 Honda prelude. I have replaced my timing belt and everything works properly except for my belt getting shredded against the two tensioner wheels. I'm not sure if I put the crank timing pulley correctly or could it be something else. There is a big washer which I put behind the timing crank pulley;not sure if it should go in the front of the pulley. And how far back should I push the crank timing pulley. Reason I am asking this is due to no Honda macs in the area and I have to fix it myself. And people are clueless in my city.

When u turn the crankshaft with the belts on at the end counter clock wise three teeth,is it okay for it to move of the tdc points all together?
You have to move all of it at the same time to keep it it in time.
yo i need big help, so basically i have an h22 in my del sol. I got everything to TDC while the belt was on (so everythings in the same rotation)but when i took off the cam gears they moved forward slightly now its not TDC. To get it back TDC I know 1 rotation of the cams is equal to 2 rotations of the crank but what is the calculation for the "balancer gears" for them to be in time with the crank?
Everything has marks. There is also a service bolt in the back of the block to lock the balance shaft gear in place

That one is easy bro. You take the power steering belt and pully belt off. Then you need a really strong impact gun and just zip it off i could do that entire job in like 15min

When the pistons in the center are at the highest point it can be in the block. Its a term used for reference when timing the motor with new belt instals

Its case by case cheapest way to find out is to put a new belt on and if it runs like crap you prob have bent valves

How did you tighten your manual tensioner? I'm very stuck and my timing belt keeps slipping from the gears when I turn the crank shaft pulley.
Which tensioner do you have? Its pretty simple to use just turn counter clock wise to raise it up and that tightens the tension.
@@treybedipping1734 h23 ks tuned manual tensioner. What kind of method did you use to tighten it becszue I'm using a crows foot and some extensions. And I still cant seem to tighten it.
@@Tristan-kd7ck it should have come with a special wrench. If not use a short wrench and as you turn, flip the wrench over to get the next angle to turn it.
I snapped my cambelt. Can I set trimming without the belt on.
Typically you have to set the timing with the belt off and once the timing is set you install the belt.

I have a random question, what are those markings on the Cam Caps at 12:58? What do they represent? I have an '99 F20b, took the valve cover off and have the same markings on ALL the caps,
only mine are 45 / 107. I also have a JDM '93 H22a and it doesn't have these markings.

You have to remove the mount to get the new belt on
There are some rings that come with it. Do thwy go with the tensioner? Theres 2 of the same size and one that is bigger

Bro i installed manual tensioner on my h22 but I have a lot of slack between the cam gears. Did I miss something? I made sure everything aligned with the marks.
Once its timed correctly you turn the pully bolt 3 teeth counter clockwise to create tension. Then then you adjust the tensioner to remove thr remaining slack

disregard the hydrolic tensioner, get a k-tuned one.
How do you tight the belt crank shift belt
The balance shaft belt? You create tension by hand pushing upward on the circle tensioner or you can use a flat head screw driver as a pry bar as well.

Almost all h22 parts are interchangeable with the f20b aside from some internals.
F20b h22 and h23v pretty much the same

I took my belt off last night to replace and didn't set It to TDC. None of the gears have moved. Can I Install the new belt and rotate the engine to TDC and make sure everything lines up properly?
Not worth the risk i would do it the right way.

@@mrkeithleeman1998 the 2 cam gears as well as the crank all have marks indicating when the motor and cams are at top dead center. Once they are tdc then you put the belt back on.

where is that 12 mm bolt you mentioned for the alternator tensioner?
The tensioner bolt is a 10mm there is a 12 under the alternator that tightens it and holds it in place.

How can I get the cams in the correct timing if they were move while the belt was off
There are arrows and line notches on the cams and crank to guide you to put it at top dead center.
@@treybedipping1734 so as long they are set in marks it wouldn’t mater if they were move just move them to the marks and that’s all..also with this manual tensioner how can I get the correct tension on the belt with out the noise on it I used my car for driving not racing will it still be better to go with the manual one

i have a 99 prelude h22a4 with a shattered oil pump i have the motor mount out and the crank pulley off and the oil pan. do i have to remove the water pump and other gears (6:30) to get to the oil pump? i took a pic of what mine looks like rn imgur.com/a/8B6YGCa

You need to check for fuel, spark, and compression

Try removing you thermostat first and see if that solves the issue. If it does then just replace the thermostat. It's a cheap part

Trey Be Dipping okay so.. intake side doesn’t turn hella smooth lik exhaust side. Like you start turning it and it kinda just clicks in place about 1/4 full rotation,, You can’t make small rotations. Counter clockwise

Ks tuned sells a balance shaft delete kit but you can also just not run that belt

Eyyy dude, in a stock 5th I got the ABS Shit all in the way, what's a good way around it or do I gotta undo it all
Abs is tricky to do a full delete you may need to redo some lines but most importantly you need a non abs valve from either a prelude, civic, or integra because once you take out the abs unit you'll have 6 lines that need to be regulated.

There are a few tricks but you can try loosening the 14mm bolt holding the tension arm.

What tool do I use to turn the Timing belt so it’s top dead centre?
For the bottom put the 19mm bolt back in so you can turn the crank. The cam bolt is a 14mm

Hey trey if my cam timing is off a tooth or 2, would I have to go through this whole process to get it back in time? I have a long screw driver in piston 1 and got it to tdc can I just slide the belt off and readjust the cam timing like that or not a good idea?
If it skipped a tooth it could be possible is stripped the belt you may want to look replacing it. But yea there is no easy way to do it honestly

They aren't much better than oem if at all. I used one before and have one on my car as well.
They're better than oem last me 5 years and going
I sell them. They are nothing special. Years doesn't mean anything, miles is the determining factor. I had a stock timing belt for 6 years before the tensioner went out and i swapped out my motor. I have a gates on there now as a matter of fact on my h23a. I get them at wholesale cost and thats the only reason i chose it over oem. The belts are not "better", neither will "snap" unless never changed.
