    What an interesting piece of motor heritage kept so well preserved. Hi remember so many as a kid and my mum had one for a while. It was orange and she bought it for £50 when she was broke! 😂 it didn’t go wrong for her so proved reliable! The fastback version was an attractive looking car too

    Everyone joked about them at the time. I’ve never driven one but drove Ladas. Very underrated and I’d hazard a guess these were very good cheap cars too.

    Yes, I know Škoda would be dead without VW. But they are now, too, in different way. Audi has still its Quattro platform, well, seat was always in role where it's now... Where's something from Škoda history? Since 50s to end of 90s they always made some unique, limited version of their car, sporty two door (MBX, 110R, Rapid) or fancy (50s Felicia, 90s Felicia Fun), which was different from mass produced car in way, it could't be easily replicated. Now they don't make anything like this

    I'm not bothered about Škoda being owned by VW - Felicia was build after VW bought Škoda, but I still see her as real Škoda. I'm bothered by Škodas being build from existing VW models, with no own development at all. For every model Škoda makes, you'll find almost same car made by other VW group brand.

      It's the same for many manufacturers these days. Same engines, same floor p ans, running gear etc, with maybe a slightly different body. If you want a European made car, then that is what makes them affordable. Otherwise we would be over run with Chinese Rubbish.
      On the plus side, it means that many mechanical parts can be used on more than one car. So it makes used parts easier to find.

    Performance version of some car should have some different technology in it, to make it different fom standart version. If it has only chipped engine, it's just light tuning made by manufacturer. If it has some changes on suspension, or unique engine, lightweight interior etc.. Then it's performance version. If it's build from scratch as performance car, then and only then it's performance car.

    Noo, new Rapid has anything common with old ones... Maybe it has engine on same place as 30s rapid, but it has wrong drive axle... Also 30s rapid was little stronger version of cheapest car - but now, it's only cheapest car (Fabia) with backpack...
    Also, i would't tell that rear engine is wrong place.. Maybe unpractical, but not wrong place. They were only equiped with wrong rear axle in most cases, which was pretty dangerous mistake

      To be fair a lot of 70s and 80s cars suffered poor build quality and lack of quality control, just about everything produced by the British Leyland group for starters.

  • @Papinak2
    @Papinak2 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    But it was getting better with Favorit, then with help of VW, Felicia was pretty good, but still czech developed car. They could keep it this way and we could see some nice, original cars by Škoda. But then, VW stopped all development (for example new 100HP 1.6 engine for Felicia) in Škoda, they knew, that they could make better cars than VW. Well, sometimes they do. But mostly, they make just cheaper Volkswagens

    • @hermanmunster3358
      @hermanmunster3358 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely! I owned one in the early 2000's, and can tell you a funny little story. I was driving along the Streatham High Road in London, and I came to a stop at some traffic lights, I think it was just outside Budgens. And who should come waltzing out, laden with shopping bags, but Anne Widdecombe, you know, the ex Conservative MP.
      Well, she started waving at me, trying to get my attention. So I leant across, and rolled down the passenger side window, and asked if I could help? To which she replied, "oh yes, thank you. You are such a Sex God. I was wondering, could you give me a lift back to the commons? I'm running a bit late, and William Hague is waiting for his Yorkshire tea, and garibaldi biscuits"
      So I said yeah, hop in.
      On the way, she started to grab my knee and stroke my thigh. So I said "OI, WIDDECOMBE! NOOOOOO!!! I might be a sex god, driving a chick magnet, but do you think that means you can overlook my Argos wedding ring, and make suggestive moves in my bloody car?"
      To which she replied "so sorry young man, I just quiver when I see a handsome young chap driving a Skoda" or words to that effect.
      But anyway, we exchanged numbers and she comes round on a regular weekly basis while the wife is at work, and makes a batch of home .made baps. Who knew eh? I suggested,with such expert kneading skills, she ought to go on Bake Off. But she said she has her own show in the pipeline, called "The Fruity Baker' . It was originally on Channel 5, but I believe Netflix are going to re-run the whole series as a box set, so those who are inclined can binge watch it. So look out for that. Its a bit like Nigella, but only with a lot more crust, and sagging tits covered in self raising flour.

    They are not Škodas anymore, they are just VW with different body, which is only part, they actually make in Czech Republic.
    I didn't say its car for poor, but that it's VW for poor, it's cheaper than VW equivalent.
    Yes, estelles were archaic, because of situation in this country, not because Škoda couldn't make anything better - look for 720 type, which was in development in 70s. But communist didn't have money, after they tried to make Škoda factory in Slovakia

  • @Papinak2

    I would like to add some details, Superb is not luxury car, just large family car, as Mazda 6 or VW Passat. And Octavia and Fabia RS are just stronger (not even strongest available for given platform) engines in little higher equipment, not really performance cars. Yeah, they become goood brand, but it's just VW for poors, it's not real Škoda anymore
