In Australia these cars were known as the Magna and had a wider body and the 4G54 engine 2.6L Astron II. A wagon variant was also designed in Australia.
Wow! What a find, perfect color too. From a time when Japanese cars had their own distinctive style. I rode once as a passenger in a GLX just like this one, and was impressed by the cool and luxurious interior, it was a nice comfortable drive too, with a calm but quite strong engine. This one is so much nicer than the GL models, which I thought were a bit bland.
Wow, I owned one of these exact models back in the late 80's, it was a dream of a car to drive, just comfortable and quiet inside compared to most other cars of the time. And that 2L engine had some get up and go, and would happily push 130mph. A car I certainly wish I still owned. And just so rare nowadays. Been to dozens of car shows and never spotted one. Hard to believe just how good a condition this one is in, must have been garaged for it's life, my one sadly suffered from a lot of rust because it lived outside.
My dad bought this car as his first factory fresh car in 1984. A 2000 GLS in metallic blue and grey velours interior. 5 years later i learnt how to drive in it too. Later on, he gave it to me occasionally. In 1980s Vienna, it was pretty rare. In Dec 89, he asked me to transfer the car to Klagenfurt, where i should pick him up. En route, i totaled the car due black ice and rolled over 3 times. No chance with my driving experience close to zero...Shocked, but unharmed i called him up, he came to pick me up in a rental VW Golf. I never forget the expression on his face...
These were a cracking car, again in my youth, couldn't afford one ,damm but the boiler man at RAF sealand did in metallic green, and when he was on shift parked it in the boiler room to keep it out the weather and in the warm
This galant super touring is definitely a fantastic car, my father owned it 30 years ago and I had beed driving it since I was 17, 1800 CC, everything was so advanced at that time.
I just went through the brochure of this Galant. The amount of luxury which came as standard on this GLS model is really amazing when you think this went on sale in 1984. Just compare this to a (then just facelifted) Cavalier! Headlamp washers, power steering, sunken wipers, time-delay on the interior light, automatic climate control (without AC though), speed-controlled wipers and even cruise control, all standard on this GLS. Too bad they didn't sell any better, I think this Galant surely deserved it.
I agree. My parents drove a 1984 Opel Ascona = Cavalier. It was nothing like the Galant. No luxury at all. Not even 5 gears. I also thought the Galant looked a lot better, but I think people considered them too exotic back then and there were some horror stories of expensive spare parts going around. But I think these cars were quite reliable so hardly any parts were needed.
This particular model was based on a Japanese model but made in Australia with a wider body. It was exported to many countries around the world including its home land Japan. This car one many awards in Australia including Car of The Year several times. A wagon version was released in 1986 and was a huge seller for families and businesses. The Magna had 4 updates until 2005 when it was replaced by an American designed car which although was the best built car in Australia and again won a great number of awards was not a great seller and the factory closed its doors in 2008. It was the beginning of the car industry in Australia with the then liberal government pulling all support for lock car manufacturing will all brands closing over the next 8 years including Australia's biggest car brand the Holden. All cars are now imported.
Nice Mitsi Sigma don't see many that haven't turned to dust or use more oil than fuel. These were a dime a dozen in NZ. Interesting UK spec got Galant badges, that was a different car.
I love these unusual models. I hope to see an MG ZT-T, Saab 9000 Aero 1991, Ford Mondeo ST200, Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 (E38A) and Morris Minor 1000 Traveller. Could you find these ones?
i own 1986 with 1,6 engine. its really comfortable and strong car. and she never let it down. however, it is very difficult to find spare parts since my daughter is produced very little. that's why it's slowly getting old and getting harder and harder to repair every day. i wish i can find a way to save her. she is my first car. we had many adventures with her. but the end of our story seems to be approaching. i wish.. i wish i can save her.
Drove one of these from 1985 to 2000 Interior way ahead of its time But transmission weak with fake 5th gear used vacuum to engage horrible. But loved this modern shape. Brad New Zealand
Wow the feel of the seats and comfort is just great... back in the time cars had a good taste rather then now... New gallant and this old version which one would u want to be in???😉😊😚😙
*u already modif the several parts in this galant, example the pwer window, the original still using manual to open close window, bcos i had a galant like this too, so i knew about it. :) , but thanks for showing to people how luxury galant is* ..
Proton Saga was not in the same class. It was based on Mitsubishi Lancer, not the Galant. This was known as Mitsubishi Galant Super Touring, and it was into the luxury class then, with 1.8 and 2.0 engines. The first Proton Perdana was a Mitsubishi Eterna which was a follow up model of the Mitsubishi Galant in this video. I was in Japan when Mitsubishi Eterna was released in the early 90's and true enough it was released as Proton Perdana in Malaysia as a spearhead into the luxury market for Proton, which lasted for 15 years before being replaced by the current Proton Perdana which is a Honda Accord.
But anyhow, I'm a Malaysian though, I've always excited to wait this channel to upload something Mitsubishi and turns out they had one now. And still, they may look same but their completely different car for different market. (Or i suppose platform reusing though)
Not the shape of the galant I owned in the 90's... which was a fantastic car, severely under rated by what car & which car then... but this is a real blast from the 1980's... prisoner cell block H era, the old galant that was huge in Australia & NZ... the one proton used in the 1990's though Mitsubishi never gave them the engines or upholstry... proton's were slightly different as the body got slight change... if I remember right Mitsubishi redesigned it for proton but proton just used crap everything... knowing someone that had one of those proton's in 1993 & having the chance to take one for a drive... I had a cavalier at the time & no way I'd have sold it for a proton. Mitsubishi's like Honda & the good old "old school" Japanese built Toyota were just reliable & lasted... and lasted... as long as you took great care of it... but not many of these good old Japanese cars around now. Wonder what happened to Malcolm's Honda civic mk1 that split in half in the film.
Well, for your information the Proton wasn't based on a Galant either. It may look like a Galant but Mitsubishi used similar design on the Colt (Mirage) and Galant which the Colt (Mirage) serves as a smaller companion to the Galant and which the ones that was later Protons based on.
I think these were actually called the Sapporo in Italy but they would be really rare. The only thing these and the Stellar have in common is the engines
ArmonyJazzStudio it's not a well known fact but Mitsubishi was one of the starters of the Hyundai brand which is why many early Hyundai's were very Mitsubishi looking.
Yeah I had an '86 in '96 and it had way too many issues for a ten year old car that had been driven by a granny before me. Lifter issues I remember for sure, I did so much work on that thing. Also it had TWO timing belts, wtf. All of that being said, it was my first car and this sure brings back memories of what the interior looked like. I can genuinely say though that I don't miss it LOL.
