My New Rolex GMT Jubilee in Gold! - Watch Collection Update!

- The Rolex GMT in gold is a watch that has always caught my eye. There is something about the older GMT's with a Jubilee bracelet that makes them great. Rolex must have realized this because not long ago they released the GMT Pepsi Ref#126710BLRO and then the Batgirl Ref#126719BLNR. Both watches have been a hit but personally I have always like the look of the older models better. I happened to come across this watch and the first thing that got my attention was the Serti dial with the ruby markers. Up until this point I had never seen this dial combination before. It was love at first sight lol. The next thing that I noticed was how excellent the condition of the watch was. All my watches in my personal collection are in perfect conditions. It is a 1991 Rolex GMT Master 2 Ref#16718 and I was lucky enough that it came with papers. Papers are no that important to me but it is always a good thing to have. The crazy thing about this watch is that even though I really do not intend on wearing it much, I just wanted to see it in my collection. Even crazier is the fact that although the dial is what drew me towards it, I am looking for a Root beer dial and bezel combination. I have always like that look for this model. Watch collecting is a very interesting hobby and I fully enjoy all the different chapters in this journey.

Thanks for sharing your experience about the financial journey you made to actually buying this watch, that special effort you made because opportunities come not always at a financial abundancy but if you make that effort you end up with your masterpiece and also with time overpassing that financial effort. About the root beer dial and bezel change sounds fun but the combination this watch has is so unique I would t change it for anything.

Eric, you asked for opinions on whether you should change the dial and the bezel to the bronze 'rootbeer' colour. Is Rolex willing/able to make such changes?
I am a major fan of the rootbeer (16718) GMT Master II watch. It is a little old and obscure these days, but it is distinctive and truly one-of-a-kind due to its colour scheme. I don't own one, but I'm determined to get one eventually.
I have never really liked the Jubilee bracelet. I prefer the Oyster bracelet. I have also noticed that you can place a President bracelet onto the GMT and Submariner watches. I think the President bracelet is truly beautiful, but I don't think it is best suited to the rootbeer GMT (16718) or gold Submariner (16618) watches. For me, an Oyster bracelet is the go-to-guy.
I like how you swap dials around. I have an 81 linen datejust that I love, but I have always liked the blue dials more. It just never occurred to me to get a blue dial and swap it out. That root beer combo sounds great, I say go for it.

Where does the word 'Serti' come from? (I assume it refers to the metallic golden dial of this watch?)

Damn this is soooo nice. Like yourself, I had always wanted to get a root beer 16758 but this one that you have looks so special. The black bezel looks super pop and cool. I would keep it as is if I was you.

I have the two tone root beer Eric. Yes the dial pops , but I wouldn't change one thing about your watch. The ruby and diamond dial is very special I think and the condition of your watch especially the band is exceptional I think. Keep up the good work Eric !!!

That particular gmt watch looks great. although I personally would normally shy away from watches with diamonds and begets but damn there are a few out there including the rainbow Daytona that somehow it just works.....I would also like to comment that although you are a watch dealer, I have never heard you promoting your business.... and that my friend is a very classy act on your behalf.... having said that let me quote Tony Montana in the Movie Scarface if he where to be describing most of the other watch related channels on TH-cam .... Hi Eric, until recently I thought there are ‘other’ watch brands in existence but lately watching your channel looks like there’s only one. Since I like your comments please for a god sake stop Rolex ‘tirade’ and give us your thoughts on RD, IWC, BREGUET, L&S and other great brands. My opinion, I wouldn’t wear ‘that’ brand if someone gave me as a present!

Swap out, why not. A change is as good as a rest. You'll swap it back original and vice versa as you like. Love those watches!

Yo, Eric. Firstly, well done. Root beer dial(nipple) and bezel(dark brown) would be undoubtedly better(imho). But where would you find those? RSC? If RSC does that replacement, will they return at least the dial they had just replaced? Best to look outside for old root beer nipple dial that is turning red/orange , that would be much better than RSC replacement dial.

Don’t swap it. Just buy a root beer. I’m looking for the xact same reference: 16718 on a Jubilee w/ hidden clasp. With tiger eye or brown or black dial, and a brown bezel or a Root beer (gold) bezel. “Swiss Made” era. In Unworn or Like New condition.
I love these older pieces. The prices asked are just nuts though now.
