You should listen to the version of Estonia from With Friends From The orchestra. Very special.

I love both of these songs. Thanks for reacting to them. But which is better? That's easy for me. I have always preferred Estonia. But my suspicion as to why more fans seem to choose TSE is in my opinion two-fold. 1) The epic guitar solo in TSE is truly one of Rothery's best. And as an aside, I love the final section of the song after the solo. Truly great. 2) And the lack of a guitar solo in Estonia is possibly a let-down to many fans? But I would argue that Estonia wouldn't be as good if it did have an epic solo. Rothery has a great gift of knowing how to play for the song - what to put in and what to leave out. In other words he crafts his guitar parts in a way that serves the song and it's message. A guitar solo, just for the sake of the solo would distract from the hauntingly beautiful message of Estonia. Anyway, that's my opinion. I guess maybe there's a 3rd reason and that is the song format. Many Marillion fans are perhaps less inclined to like the more straightforward song structure. It isn't prog enough for some fans.

This is a great comment Keith! Appreciate you sharing and great point on Rothery, doesn't feel the need to show off just because he can, which is very rare for great guitarists. Knopfler comes to mind as well.

Thanks Shawn, for me TSE itself is probably the 'greater' of these two tracks, but if pushed (and not least because it helped get the other half into my favourite band, not too many Marillion fans have had great success with that, shockingly enough!) I'd also have to plump for Estonia as the winner!

The subject matter of Estonia is just so much more important, or should be, to everyone, while I've never felt TSE's lyrics had any meaning deeper than Hogarth explaining his feelings flowing from his relationship with his parents. But there are lots of fans who don't care much for Estonia. The hopeful lyrical message either flies over their heads, or is contrary to the tenets of their religion and therefore leaves them cold about the song.
Thanks for featuring not one, but two Marillion songs on your channel. The music is so wonderful, but the band remains a bit unknown and very low on the popularity scale. People surfing the almost infinite amount of content available on YT will typically click a link that leads them to someone reacting to a favorite band, rather than one they don't know. The result is few clicks for Marillion songs.
Too late this time around, but when you re-visit this band, never use studio cuts of Hogarth vocals. Always find a live performance of the song. Always. Always. Always.
Have you seriously considered attending the March 28-31, 2025 Montreal Marillion Weekend? You've probably missed the chance to see all sorts of legendary bands whose members have now either died on grown old and infirm. Marillion's members are old guys now, but they still put on wondrous concerts, featuring the classic line-up with no substitutions of young, new musicians. Because they are not immensely popular, tix are very reasonably priced, and Montreal is a great tourist destination. Don't miss seeing Marillion before time takes its inevitable toll on the band.

Just not in the budget to go there but I would love to. We have a ton of Marillion up on the channel. I have a great affinity for them. The Patron that brought this battle is a superfan and that has helped. Appreciate you watching!

@@ReactionsToTheClassics Don't discard the idea so readily. Tickets will go on sale in about a month, it is rumored. The only immediate purchase needed is if you have some physical problems and need a seat for the concert. Balcony seats go within minutes, but general admission (standing only, dubiously dubbed "festival seating" ;-) will remain available for months if the past is any guide to anticipated sales.
My wife and I have a disability (we were fucking old first time around, and worse now), so we need to score seats in the balcony.
My wife and I first went in 2013, six weeks after hearing Hogarth's Marillion for the first time ever, driving from Metro Detroit to Montreal (11 hours one way), and stayed in a hotel about two blocks from the concert venue and right on top of the city's major subway hub. We, too, were on a budget for the trip, and found to our delight that the subway hub had a fast food court, and a large underground supermarket offering everything a glutton might desire. We ate most of our meals in our hotel room, bought a reasonably cheap subway pass, met fans from all over the world, and enjoyed three full, different Marillion concerts (now, alas, only two - the guys in Marillion are also old now, just not as feeble as we are).
Maybe by early next year you'll have 1,000,000 subscribers to your channel and be well able to afford the trip.

haha that would be nice. I have had RA for 17 years so my body unfortunately cannot take much travel at all. So many places I would love to see but missed that window! I will live vicariously through you though!

I've never quite understood the love for Estonia. I think Out of this World from the same album is a much better track. This Strange Engine is an incredible track, musically expansive and right from the heart, the more so because I can relate directly to the lyrics. Sometimes I think, as children, we unknowingly steal the lives and dreams of our parents.

@@stephenhaunch3468 Fair point. It's been a very long time since I dug the albums out, and for some reason, it might be the watery theme, I always put those two songs together. If I listen to Marillion at all these days it's a DVD I will go for, but they haven't been in rotation for a while.

This Strange engine is one of my all time favorite tracks by anyone. Estonia has no chance, I find it a pleasant track but a bit too straightforward and repetitive.
