#ACaseOfYou #JoniMitchell #Reaction
I've had this song on repeat since recording this reaction...
Dude, you've got to dive deep into Joni. Start with Blue, there's a reason that album is on the top 5 of every "Greatest Albums Ever" lists. Then try her other albums like Hejira, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Court and Spark, Ladies of the Canyon, etc. She's perhaps the greatest songwriter of all time.
Not surprised. :)
Doesn't matter how many times you listen to a Joni Mitchell song, it still holds more depth and meaning to discover
resistance is futile. Her songs will pull you in like nothing else. The only way out is through.
There is video on yt of Joni performing this song live.
How could you not know about Joni Mitchell?! An absolute genius!
Congrats, you just discovered one the greatest songs ever written. A song I've probably listened to hundreds of times over the years and it always seems fresh.
Joni's metaphors are endlessly beautiful and deeply moving. Taking the wine metaphor: "part of you pours out of me, in these lines from time to time" What a lovely tribute to her lover. So strong.
She doesn't write lyrics, she writes poetry, and sets it to music.
My absolute favorite Joni Mitchell song. This whole album is brilliant. Top 10 of all time for me. 💜💜💜
I think it might be her favorite also, judging from her reaction to it at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.
I would recommend "River" and "Carey", songs that are opposite in mood. River is sad and regretful, Carey is light-hearted and upbeat. Also "Little Green" is a poignant and heart-breaking song when you know that Joni gave birth to a daughter when she was quite young and unknown and gave her up for adoption, knowing she couldn't provide a good life for her. They reconnected when the daughter was an adult and now Joni has grandchildren. You can't go wrong with any of the songs on this album.
Yeah, Carey is a great song.
I'm adopted and I really struggle to listen to Little Green it's a beautiful song
I'm pretty sure Carey is the redneck she mentions in "California" who stole her camera
"Blue" is a legendary album. Joni is the Queen of The Prairies, Canadian Icon and songwriter extroidinare.
Joni is my favorite songwriter ever. Possibly the best artist alive. Looking forward to more reactions for sure.
this whole album is pure emotion from start to finish.
the title track is one of the most heart-shatteringly beautiful songs ever written.
Second only to ‘Little Green’.
“Have a happy ending”.
She's brilliant ❤
I've been a sub for about a year now, but you just scored a 10 by reacting to Joni and this song in particular. She has been on my radar since the late 60's and there are other spectacular voices in varied genres, but Joni is a special - both in her songwriting and unique and beautiful vocals. She plays the guitar, piano and dulcimer on this particular album (self-taught.) with some guitar work from James Taylor. Thank you for this one, SalvoG! 👍👍💖💖 Other gems from this album that are more than worth a listen are "River", "My Old Man", "Cary" and "California." I played this entire album start to finish until I wore out the vinyl, then bought it on CD. For another treat, I would suggest "For Free" from "Ladies of the Canyon."
"Blue" is one of the greatest albums ever!!
I don't know what I love more about Joni; her poetry, song writing, or her angelic voice. She has so many GREAT songs she is one of the best artists in the history of music.
"Blue" and "Amelia" are must listens.
I am glad that you have introduced Joni Mitchell into your life. It will only get better having her to expand your world.
Oh this is such a good one to start with. There is so much Joni, to dive into. She is incredible. This album, Blue, is incredible.
❤ also on Blue, "California", "All I Want" (both performed on the dulcimer), "The Last Time I Saw Richard", and the title track "Blue" both performed on acoustic piano. Blue will give you a taste of Joni's jazz inspirations, which would come forward on her 5th-9th albums. On her final album of the decade, Mingus, is full blown jazz as Joni wrote all the lyrics to Charles Mingus' jazz standards. Looking fwd to your reactions G!
A great song to start out with and now you know the wonder and beauty of Joni Mitchell's writing and voice and why she is so special and with no one comparable.
She is truly and an artisan goddess. This is my all time favorite.
One of my favorites.
This is my favourite Joni Mitchell song..
Thank you for finally listening to Joni. I’m one of the people from patreon trying to get Blue to finally win a poll. The entire album is simply a masterpiece.
I commented months ago that Blue would never win, but that it didn’t matter. Salvo HAD to,listen to her anyway because she was that good, and that much of an icon in the history of the singer/songwriter tradition.
Definitely the entire album needs to be listened and actually all her music; all of her songs are about her life stories
For individual songs, I love 'Coyote,' 'River,' 'Chelsea Morning,' and 'Urge for Going.' But you can't go wrong.
She is a gold mine of depth and breadth of innovation. Multidimensional artistry.
My favorite Joni Mitchell song is "Both Sides Now" from the album of same name.
I love singing along to Joni Mitchell because not only does she sing in my register, if I don't sing along, most of her songs will make me cry. The album is so aptly titled, she pours her heart out in every song.
I’d definitely recommend Both Sides Now, and River. Joni is such a unique treasure! Beautiful lyricist, singer, and musician.
Just imagine being 19 years old, going to a concert in Amsterdam (concert-gebouw) and she is on stage alone with the dulcimer on her lap singing this song in 1971. It's been all downhill from there what concerts are concerned from that moment. Love to see ppl discover her music and recommend listening to all her albums to see/hear the progression she's made. Clouds/both sides now is what made me a fan, check it out.❤❤❤❤
Joni is an amazing songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and artist/painter. This album, Blue, is really incredible; my favorite of hers.
You reactions are supreme in authenticity. This artist is revered in the music community, from Rockers, Hip hop, death metal, regardless whom. This is MUSIC as a Language.
Blue and her Previous albums are pretty much solo and are all beautiful. Her later albums feature a band and they are also amazing. Joni is incredible.
One of my all-time favorite songs. It will always be on my top 50 for the rest of my life. I don't ever see it being removed. The poetry in her writing is unbelievable, her sensitive approach to vocals with just enough Edge to her words to captivate an audience of all genres of music. She is a classic. I agree with you, First time I heard this song I had it on repeat for days
I love both Help Me and Free Man In Paris from the Court and Spark album and am always curious that they don't get requested more by Joni fans, as they are both catchy and big radio hits. I think they could be played back to back as they are both short and have a similar vibe.
Yes, Free Man in Paris is one of Joni's most up tempo songs and is a real toe tapper while still retaining wonderful personal lyrics.
Love your comment about how wonderful some of these artists were who could reach us because they embodied their hearts in their songs. Joni is definitely one, as is James Taylor and Phil Collins. Their genuine honesty in bearing their souls reaches us deeply. There are others but few at this level.
Jackson Browne, IMO. David Crosby another.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Most definitely. They both would be on my list. I might add Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.
Help Me is my favorite Joni song.✌️😊🦋they’re all fabulous though. She’s Queen status!
If your curious about the dulcimer (and more Joni brilliance), I recommend you check out Joni’s live performance of “California”. Joni is seated and plays it on her lap, and it’s a truly remarkable performance.
1000% support that statement. It's Live and it's amazing
I'm surprised that you didn't say anything about her incredible voice and vast range. She has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and you didn't even mention it.
I've only heard her big hits, never a more deep cut. This is as amazing as I thought it would be. I worked with a huge Mitchell fan and my niece talks about her all the time. Now I know why. More please!
"Amelia", "Carey", "Help Me", "Big Yellow Taxi", "For Free", "Woodstock"......there's a start for ya Salvo!
Joni Mitchell is a giant.
Such a deep rabbit hole, and her style changes over time. No matter which period/album you choose, you'll find excellence. I particularly like the live Shadows and Light album, where she's accompanied by Pat Metheny (lead guitar), Lyle Mays (piano/keys), Don Alias (drums and percussion), Jaco Pastorias (bass), Michael Brecker (sax), and (on a couple of songs), The Persuasions on background vocals. There's video of the live concert too.
One of my all time favourite songs. Thanks for listening. Cheers from Nova Scotia!
Oh Joni.....Oh Canada !
I ❤ Joni. Great album too
I love to hear people that have just experienced Joni for the first time as she has been such a part of the background of my life. I was a college student in 1968 and encountered Pop music on many levels. I ended up owning maybe 4 record stores in my life, being entertained by the music that was mushrooming all around us and being able to turn others on to various musical experiences and make a living at the same time. Joni was certainly a high point in that musical journey. She was muse to so many of the big stars in the rock music pantheon back than and each and every one of them that found themselves in her orbit totally fell head over heels for her as an artist and a beautiful human. Hers is one of the epic stories, both from an artist and a romance point of view. She was the only one that Dylan asked to perform with him at the great Buddhist temple in Japan that fronted for a concert, the likes of which had never been seen in the modern world. Look it up on TH-cam. It is easy to find, even if you just ask for Dylan's performance in Japan at the largest Buddhist temple in the world. It will appear, but I am too lazy to look up that information for you now.
Oh you are so lucky. To be new to joni. She's one of the top 10 artists of my lifetime. A true Artist. Enjoy the journey.
No problem leaving a like here!! 😂One world - one Joni!! 😍
Joni ❤❤❤
OH YES! Thank you. One of Joni's most moving tunes & definitely the most beautiful emotional album ever. "Blue" is my number one album of all time. I would vote for "Blue" every time. Her poetry & how the vocals are woven in among the music makes it so very special.
The instrument she is playing is called a dulcimer.
Every time I hear a Joni Mitchell song I think of a song lyric by Bob Dylan that says "She's got everything she needs, she's an artist, she don't look back. She can take the dark out of the night time and paint the day time black."
True poets in song are rare. This level is even rarer.
Top 5 Favorite song of all-time. 💙
I’ve been a fan since her first album in 1969, and owned about seven of them. My favorite female singer/songwriter, and one of the top singer/songwriters in history. That’s not just I saying that. It’s the critics. It’s other songwriters. Musicians. The huge majority of people under 50 don’t know her work and it’s their deep loss. Her body of work is magnificent,a as you’ve just experienced. PLEASE delve into her work in a serious way. You will be rewarded with amazing songs.
Something so special here love it love you
Great reaction. I love this song.
This song and all I want are my top favs of hers. Highly recommend!!
The Hissing Of Summer Lawns 1975
Another fine album.
She has the voice of an angel. I love me some Joni very much. She's a treasure.
HEYYYYYYY!!! LMAO😊NIIIIICCCCCE!👍 MY FAVORITE FEMALE ROCK ARTIST FOR 50 YEARS NOW SALVO, NOTHINGGGG BUT THE BEST!💯😊HOPE YOU LIKE THIS LEGEND!
Court and Spark was her most commercially successful album. It was the beginning of her jazz fusion period, which I love. My personal favorite album of hers is Hejira, released a couple of years later.
Her voice deepened a lot as she got older. Her 1994 album Turbulent Indigo is another favorite of mine. The soprano was long gone, replaced by a smoky alto.
She did love her cigarettes….
Hejira is Joni's masterpiece for sure.
Without a doubt, Joni is one of the greatest songwriters of our time. She conveys her life through her music, but makes it your life, as well, by relating the emotion.
Joni is one of the greats. So many great songs including this one. Possibly her best is Both Sides Now. While Judy Collins had the hit with it, I'd recommend listening to two versions of this song by Joni. First the initial folk version (from the 1969 LP Clouds; there is a live performance of this version on TH-cam from 1970) and then an orchestral version (from the 2000 LP Both Sides Now; TH-cam has a wonderful performance of this version from 2000).
Thanks, I enjoy your reactions.
Her voice dances on butterfly wings.
If you didn’t notice, James Taylor is accompanying her on guitar in his distinctive style
Joni was the folk queen of the 70s, and actually started in the 60s, I believe. Her voice is like the wind! And she wrote so many amazing songs! I don't know about requests, but Song to a Seagull is awesome. So is River.
Nobody requests Song to a Seagull from her first album! It’s in my top five of her songs, and that album is still my favorite album of hers…I played it constantly the summer of 1969. It was my soundtrack and just became engraved in my soul.
Joni Mitchell was only known for " big yellow taxi" in 1970 in Ireland but in 1974 an American boyfriend of mine gave me his copy of " Blue" and it changed my life. I listened to it over and over and I still know every word of every song in this album and it has coloured my life ever since. I went back to her previous albums and followed her later ones and I'm so grateful and glad to have lived through those years. You should check out the other songs on this albums as well as her other ones such as " Ladies of the canyon" and " Hejira".
Every album a miracle.
Both Sides Now. One of the most incredible songs ever. Ever.
Joni deserves all the attention and respect we can give her. ✌
Blue is Joni's best album, so many great songs from a woman of great talent.
This is the first song I learned on the guitar. It's actually difficult, but wonderful!
A fun pastime of mine is hunting down people on TH-cam listening to Joni Mitchell for the first time. They always have this stunned expression after listening, as though they went through a life-changing event.
Really appreciate your reaction. k. d. lang - a fellow Canadian - does a beautiful rendition of this song. Different vibe but a beautiful version
Aside from the appreciation, glorification of the skill, and saying its great, makes you feel like that, or how she is feeling, but can you say how it really makes YOU FEEL? Or maybe in what way you feel inspired after hearing it?
California, the Live version with video of her playing the dulcimer should be next, next My Old Man for its cleverness, but especially Both Sides Now, the new and old versions. You will not believe the changes in tone (illness/surgeries), but the life lived-wisdom is unparalleled and unmatched in the newest. You picked a gorgeous one to start with - kudos.
The first time that I ever heard this song was James Wolpert on The Voice. I knew then that I was listening to a fantastic song.
As beautiful and haunting as her voice is and with all the songs she has composed, it is interesting that Joni considers herself to be a painter, who sings also .. A unique talent and Canada is so proud of her.
My favorite Joni song! It’s spectacular ❤
I love her!! Her song BOTH SIDES NOW from 2000 album of the same name is beautiful and haunting. Help Me is uptempo and beautiful written.
SAL!!! I’m so excited you finally did this. I’m on Patreon and have been begging for Joni for forever. She is truly one of THE best songwriters ever. There is soooo much to get to. Highly recommend Help Me or Both Sides Now. Thank you so much. This truly made my day ❤
😄
Both Sides Now, please?
@@MsAmberAnneno, how about less of her folky acoustic shrillness , and more of her mid-70s period jazzy/pop stuff like Court and Spark/Hissing of Summer Lawns/Hejira ..
Shades of Scarlet Conquering -from -Hissing of Summer Lawns-her best Album Salvo
HEY SALVO!😊SO SHE'LL BE TURNING 80 ON TUESDAY ( 7 NOV ) , GOD BLESS HER HEART, SOUL AND VOICE!!!😊
Both "Blue" and "Court and Spark" are brilliant albums, worth a listen.
I love this album so much and have cried listening to it. My favourite album is Hejira ( Coyote and Amelia) with the bassist Jaco Pastorius accompanying her work beautifully.
I love Joni Mitchell. This song is so good. I had this on tape( with a few others) when I joined the forces. Music kept me sane. Try” Both sides now”
SO many great songs by Joni. 🙂
Started out as a folkie and later got into jazz. One of the great songwriters of our time. Not just female songwriters but any male or female. Her lyrics are personal and most often hit a nerve in the listener. Enjoy.
David Crosby was on Howard Stern a few months ago and all they talked about was Joni Mitchell.
From the BLUE album,
the songs BLUE and RIVER.
But please explore this entire album.
She is accompanied here by James Taylor on guitar, btw.
If you have had this song on repeat, you should get the whole album on repeat friend. You will not be disappointed, promise.
If you do a Joni Mitchell full album reaction, please make it Court and Spark, not the Blue album. Maybe do Blue 2nd. Blue is good, but it much more sparse and acoustic; whereas Court and Spark is quite musically lush and is kind of a jazz-pop fusion sound, and her voice is fuller and not as shrill. It’s arguably her most highly acclaimed album, perhaps tied with Blue. Hejira is a great choice for an album reaction as well.
i love listening to them back to back.
the two combined are the perfect example of why she is so revered & respected.
I’m right with you on that. The way she evolved into a jazz/pop artist was really a fantastic transformation.
This is in my top 3 albums of all time. Many days of the week it's #1. It's so effing good.
One of my favorite Joni songs is Raised on Robbery, very quirky.😊
You can stay in the Blue zone (title-track, River), but you might eventually want to get in her mid-70's pop/jazz period (Court & Spark, Hissing of Summer Lawns) or even get in the heavy-duty jazzier and experimental era (Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter). She did great stuff in later years too (Night Ride Home, Turbulent Indigo). Tons to discover.
“California”, “Both Sides Now”, “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock” are maybe the most accessible songs for Joni newcomers. Her later 70s stuff from Hejira and beyond are maybe my favorite songs of hers but I wouldn’t go there quite yet. Blue is probably her most famous album, deservedly so, but she’s one of those artists that has several great albums and many great songs on not great albums.
All I Want and The Last Time I Saw Richard, the first and last songs on Blue, for contrast in tempo and lyrics.
What an absolute musical genius! In all my many years of listening, I have only found one singer who has a real shot of joining Joni among the Olympians, and that's Angelina Jordan. For now, though, Joni reigns supreme. Amazing. You should also listen to Help Me, Big Yellow Taxi, and Free Man In Paris.
But Joni also wrote, produced, played instruments on, almost all of her tracks.
Shes my favorite femal artist. I would recommend the whole discography
Within the field of popular music there are good songs but very occasionally a great song comes along. These great songs usually are willing to break all the previous rules of popular music either through their creative use of lyrics or unconventional instrumentation. Often the songs are ahead of their time and it is only on reflection their true genius is understood. Sometimes these songs change the whole direction of popular culture like the singing of Billie Holiday or the advent of rock and roll or perhaps how Dylan taught us lyrics could explore wider more abstract ideas not just boy meets girl cliches. Joni Mitchell took music in all sorts of new areas, her creative use of guitar tunings her willingness to incorporate folk instruments ,her soaring vocals and those heart wrenching lyrics. " A Case Of You" is a masterpiece of lyrics and stripped-back instrumentation and having listened to the song for over 45 years its magic never diminishes .
Hey SalvoG, American singer/songwriter Tori Amos recorded and released a cover of this song in 1994, a b-side track from her album Under the Pink. Personally, I think Tori brings out more emotion in the lyrics. Hauntingly beautiful.❤
Yes this is a great album loved it for a very long time, but need to check out her later albums.❤❤❤❤❤
