The first time I heard the album live was on my birthday in March 1994 in Hamburg, Germany. Brave is one of my absolute favourite albums and The great escape is a masterpiece
I remember buying the Brave record in 94 the day after release, after first listen i couldn't belive how good it was, i did listen to it every day for a month on my portable Denon CD player and 30 years later it is still one of my favorite consept albums. And yes, even today the hair on my arms rise so i get the feeling😍, great choise of music and reaction👋
K why did I miss this was I at school again ? This is my fave band Evs (apart from all my other fav bands ever -sssshhhhh don’t tell them) Sometimes they sound a bit Radiohead to me. This band totally throws out heaters! more of this live stufff pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaasssssseeeee
Yes, indeed, the young girl who is the main character in the album "had to get away from her parents". Her father was continuoulsy molesting her. She did eventually at age 17 arrive on her own in the big city, with an earleir runaway episode which ended with the authorities picking her up and treating her story of molestation as nothing more than a sign of mental illness, so she is placed in a mental institution, from which she escapes and makes her way to the city. There she falls in with the wrong crowd, finds love anyway, gets rejected and takes her broken heart out for a walk on a high suspension bridge where she throws herself over the railing to her death in the chilly waters far below to end a life of unendurable emotional pain. "The Great Escape" is her suicide note, sung by Hogarth in the first person. The band took this operatic tragedy to their record label, which liked it, except for the ending. You can't publish a record that endorses suicide as a feasible way for teens and young adults to free themselves from emotional pain, so they sent Marillion back into the studio to add one more song, "Made Again", which depicts the young girl as having decided not to kill herself and having had an epiphany of sorts where she now is able to truly enjoy life. In perhaps the best compromise ever in the world of music, the vinyl version of the album "Brave" has a double track at the end. The needle randomly wanders into one of two pathways. You either get "Made Again", or about nine minutes of water lapping on the shoreline underneath that bridge. I was in the audience for the Montreal version of the 2013 Marillion Weekends, which celebrated the 20th anniversay of "Brave". The recording you clicked upon was from the Netherlands Weekend. The Montreal venue was a small one, L'Olympia, that held maybe 2,500 fans, The ovation which followed on the heels of the last note of "The Great Escape" was the loudest noise I've ever heard, and it lasted for about 10 minutes, a roilng cascade of sound the rolled back and forth inside that theatre like a living thing.
Marillion is amazing as always, but you two could also check out "Genesis in Concert" from their 1976 tour or other videos of them from the 1970s. They are all well worth it. Cheers.
