Ive always been a Fish loyalist, and ive just started to scratch the surface of the Steve Hogarth era, and im loving what im hearing so far. Maybe the most underrated band ever.
too many have missed so much magical music from being loyal to fish, he is a genius but so are marillion, hope you get to discover more of them , best band in the world by far
One of the greatest tracks of the Hogarth era. (Brave, as a concept album overall, is a masterpiece, of course!) ... But this track. ... "So tell me more about the love that you rejected // Tell me more about the trust you disrespected // I still don't know, why did you hurt the very one... Why did you hurt the very one... That you should have protected?" ... The desperation there, and the sounds of the water at the end. ... As the instructions say, Play it loud with the lights off!
The concept of this album goes as follows. Starting with the police picking up a girl on a bridge, deciding if she wants to jump off. Then the back story leading up to the moment gets told! If this is the real story or a lot of conjecture is not important! It is a masterpiece! In prog this has to find it's rival! If you have examples please remind me, I am happy to listen!
Hi Shufflers. Dave from That There London. Not a big fan of Marillion, but I enjoyed this song. Terrific vocal performance from Steve Hogarth, who I much prefer to Fish. Back in the 80s and 90s I was more into IQ than Marillion, and I still follow them today. I reckon they sounded more like Genesis in their early days.
Labels are just a way to help explain your own point of view. I label Marillion very loosely as progressive because they progress in their music, and explore whatever interests they have as a band. They have said they don't ever want to make the same album twice, and they haven't for over 40 years. But one thread links them all for me, and that is their interpretation of beauty. It matches mine and they've known how to reveal it since the beginning.
This is the Marillion I like the bes, before they were just a band I’d compare to genesis now I compare every band to them and I just love that it doesn’t sound like that old progressive rock sound cos I just don’t like progressive rock from back then
Fish Marillion sounded nothing like Genesis, other than being a bit progressive at a time when bands like Yes and Genesis were running screaming from the prog world and trying to produce hit pop singles for radio play and bigger sales. Fish sounded nothing like Peter Gabriel or Phil Collns. I know my opinion runs counter to what you might read on Wiki and the like, but I really don't understand how people can honestly make the Genesis comparison. Also, I've observed that prog fans have a tendency to descibe any music they really like as "progressive rock". Labeling it as such is more an indication they like it than it is an accurate description of the sub-genre into which is should be classified. With song like "Lavender" and "Kayleigh", Fish Marillion was a pop single machine. Fish-era fans explain that you can't just listen to one song on a Fish-era album, and that overall the albums are, taken as a whole, prog rock masterpieces, even if the individual songs have little progressive rock in them. To my ear, I find the Hogarth era to be far more progressive. But, then again, I love the Hogarth era, don't care for the Fish era, and therefore the Hogarth era must be progressive rock in order to satisy my need to be seen as a really smart guy who only listens to progressive rock. Finally, you should have realized by now, Nathan, that you need to select live performances to really impress any new listener with the artistry of Marillion. This would appear to be particularly true with Jana, who remarked how much she enjoyed Hogarth's theatrics seeing the band live at the Cruise to the Edge. Hogarth sings this fictional girl's story in the first person, and The Great Escape is her suicide note to the cruel world that had caused all of her suffering, and he acts out the song accordingly. Jana would have absolutely loved it. Go here: th-cam.com/video/pQ74CwXcliM/w-d-xo.html Thanks for coming back to Marillion! On May 3, 2024, Marillion will be announcing dates and venues for the 2025 Marillion Weekends, including, presumably, the one in Montreal. You can't go see Genesis anymore, nor can you see the classic lineup of Yes in concert. You can't go see ELP, either. The time will come when you won't be able to see Marillion again. The guys are in the mid-to-late 60's. Trewavas was missing from the Cruise due to recent open heart surgery. Do youself and Jana a favor by planning to attend in Montreal next year. A vacation in Montreal would be fabulous even if it did not involve three unique concerts by Marillion.
i never got the genesis reference either, i never liked early genesis, i loved marillion since a young teen, i like genesis later when they did invisible touch, but early stuff bored me, marillion are a million miles away from boring , best band ever

I'm.with you. It was just lazy journalism because Fish would sometimes wear make up like Gabriel other than gan that they were nothing like Genesis
