I just purchased today the Warhammer 40K introductory set for my niece and nephew. It looks like a good entry point for people curious about the hobby + plenty of figures to paint.
I have always wanted to try war cry. Maybe I will pick this set up to see if I will like it. The miniatures and terrain look awesome. Thanks for the video Peter. Cheers JW.
I haven't played Spirit Island (though I do intend to make a rules & reference for it). I do have Etherfields, and you'll find a rules & reference for it on my website, but I've only solo'd a few turns as yet. I'm saving it up for when I have a decent chunk of spare time - which at this rate, may be never! 😆
85€ for recycled content in the case of Warcry. It's absurdly expensive and an affront. GW is optimising for maximum profit. Cheapest dice possible. Laminated paper map instead of a real map in 2023? Two recycled Underworlds warbands and the Stormcasts they already recycled for Lost Relics! To top it all off, they produced a game called Bloodborn for a lesser price that did it better even though it was a synthesis of Underworlds and Warcry.
Well, I can't argue with you, they're a very big business and their prices are very high, and they're going to recycle some content for maximum profit. It's not that I ignore the value issue, it's just that it feels like constantly repeating oneself to no avail, as we all know GW stuff is very, very expensive. And yet they continue to be extremely profitable, so I imagine that policy won't be changing anytime soon.
The emphasis on “This is for kids” is really hurting my ego right now. I’m not a little Johnny. I’m JK! Seriously though, it’s also good for people who want to figure out whether they’ll like the game without forking over too much money.
I've devoted most of my life to playing tabletop games and once bought and played Crossbows & Catapults on the floor in my early 50s - so the phrase 'for kids' really doesn't have too much meaning for me. 🤣
Diversity does not equal change Most of time its a situation where you can have male, female, black, tan, and white in a room, but zero diversity because they all think the exact same. Thing is, we are having a problem where you have big corporations in this mindset of 'constant exponential growth', where they see the new trendy audiences and in an attempt to cater to the 'new audience' they abandon the 'old'. And instead of catering to the old audience that have been dedicating their money and time to the company, they are abandoned for the 'new trendy audience'. When the old audience cries out that they are being left behind and abandoned, they are greeted with mockery, called names, and a very loud 'good riddance'. Called 'dorky' and 'ugly', descried a 'boys club' with negative connotations when... whats wrong with a hobby being a bit of a 'boys club', there are plenty of hobbies that are 'girls hobbies' and no one decries that men should be injected into those hobbies to 'improve' and 'diversify' those to make them better. Improved rules isn't the result of 'diversity', its the result of diverse thought. Yet even then, does the core audience want simplification... or streamlining, two things that are not mutually exclusive.
I'm sorry, I don't agree with you in the slightest, and on the whole, I don't think history does either. I think it's a shame you see diversity as a lot of people thinking the same, because I know for a fact that different lifestyles and cultures brought together makes for a more vibrant community in every sense. I've been here since the earliest days of Games Workshop, and like everything things have changed and evolved, albeit slowly. I always use the example of the death of the Old World - who could have imagined such a thing would happen? And how many fanboys whinged who are probably happily playing Age of Sigmar now? There's no set way that Warhammer, or anything else, has to be, and it certainly doesn't have to be a boys club to survive. How dull! I highly recommend you try giving your old habits a bit of a shake-up, you may surprise yourself and discover interesting new opponents, new ways of playing, and maybe even a new freshness and potential in your hobby. What are you afraid of? There's no downside to trying new things. Of course do or do not, I care not, but I think you'll feel happier if you embrace the fact that enjoyment of Warhammer and gaming belongs to EVERYONE, not just the people you think it should belong to. For games - and Warhammer especially - to flourish, it must continue doing what it's been doing more in recent years, which is welcome everyone. It's not doing it to be 'trendy', it's doing it to grow and stay relevant. 🤣
When you said playing over 40 years I wondered what age you are, then you told us, looking well mate, 59 myself, still haven't played a full game of any Games Workshop tabletop game eg Fantasy, 40k LOTR, AoS, Warcry, etc, the missus just can't get it so it's mostly board games and a bit of Mars Attacks! Anyway won't be buying any of this overpriced stuff!
Thank you for sharing this starter set! Looking forward to picking one up.

Nice job of presenting everything Peter. Right as well in terms of capturing sentiment. Thanks
Cheers mate!
Thanks, I wanted to try Warcry now
Check out my recent Warcry battle report and see if you like it!
Good breakdown cheers
You're most welcome.

No worries!
Did you ever play/review spirit island or etherfields?

These are the same minis as in underworlds it seems.
Quite probably!

Well thankyou! Yep, GW stuff is very expensive, especially in the Antipodes. High quality though!
