me and my two friends recently got into the hobby earlier today! my friends shared the first intrudoctory box as one of them wants the tyranids and the other wants the space marines and i bought a small tau package!
it could be great if there was "big ass starter box" Ultimate starter box + Introductory box and two brushes you can unbox it, paint with your friend, learn and play together, everything in a single box
They did that for the Soul Wars starter set for AoS 2e. There was a regular version and one bundled with a hobby set. The bundle was even available at third party retail. The fact that they have not done a similar bundle for any subsequent starter product likely indicates that it didn't sell very well compared to the regular Soul Wars starter box.
There's a paint kit from the same company that includes all the paints you'd need for ultimate starter kit! Includes way more paints than the introductory set too
Buying the most expensive starter set is basically substituting more character models (alot more) for some terrain. Personally I don't see this as a win. Leviathan is better for new starters who want to grow an army.
I’m very new to the hobby as well but getting basically two playable armies out the box with all of the extras is pretty good value considering you will pay near that much for a single stand-alone combat patrol without any of the other stuff this comes with
I'd like to get into the hobby too but I can't justify spending so much, especially when I still gotta buy paint n such as well. I saw sets of like 5 units earlier over $100...Gtfo GW..I'd sooner invest in a solid 3d printer and just start printing my own minis, probably the best option honestly.
@@mattw6705i don’t think I’ve ever seen a set of 5 mini’s for over $100… Combat patrols however are roughly 25 minis for £100 here in the UK. Also I can promise anyone that if you were to stop buying all the stupid little things throughout the month that you don’t need or really want, you’ll eventually have enough money to spend on a worthwhile hobby.
For the cost of 2 sets, you can buy a printer, and print it all yourself. Materials and resin included. It's actually insnane when you think about the profit margins on these. Each set couldn't cost GW more than 10 bucks MAX to produce
Back when my daughter was little, she wanted some sisters mini's.... she wanted pink, purple and gold with a tiger stripe theme..... don't know where they ended up as it was almost 20 years ago.... maybe I need to get back into painting mini's
Go for it! It's a boatload of fun. If you don't want a lot of stuff start with the Introductory set. You can add in the biggest one after, the two sets of five Infernus Marines will slot right in, and having lots of Termagaunts is a must, I've heard.
I think the middle box is more valuable than the big started box the gw terian may be expensive but that doesn't make it good value sense generic sci Fi bunker or ruins are easy to get but it's still nice for new players
It isn't difficult to get the Leviathan box for the same price as the ultimate starter box. I did it just a week or two ago, and it feels like a way better deal at the same price (200usd)
Not anymore lol, cheapest Leviathan box is $375+ from scalpers, so its not really a consideration any longer considering you could buy 2x Ultimate Starter Sets or 4x Starter Sets for the same price now :(
I've got the middle starter set last week. This box is perfect for me because i already started the hobby and purchased all the tools, paints and 1 box of intercessors as a starting point months ago. Now that i want to start playing with an actual army, the middle starter set gives me a terminator squad, a captain and an infernus squad. I've paid 55 euros for the box at my local 3rd party retailer since it was on sale and i also had some points from my previous purchases for extra discount. So for someone like me this box is perfect to give some structure to my army which i can finetune with separate purchases in the future.
Got Leviathan complete box once, the nids of a second one, other half was bought for half the price by a new space marine player. Aiming at a third Leviathan box for the models and an ultimate start collecting one, for models + mini rulebook + scenary. As an experianced player, getting back in the hobby, I knew this was and still is, a hobby not for the feint of wallet. For ease of mass paining, undercoating etc, got an airbrush. Now flocking and basing material and some varnish. Add double the price already spent on more models for my nids and about 200€ on a carry case + matching backpack (Jucoci + magnets) and paint and a new 2k toornament army will take it's price easily South of 1K €. I love this hobby, it's game, lore and armybuilding, but dang GW, the price of them mini's par gram excedes the price of raw silver!
My brother in the Emperor. What on earth. If you said "Librarian" I would have gotten it. If you said "Apothecary", I'd have gone "yeah sure, but the theming of the apothecary is a bit nicer". But the Captain? You *need* a Captain. The Terminators are returning bro, how would they not have a Captain. You NEED a Captain. Anyways, I left a dislike on your comment
@catcadev ok but I said it because the leviathan box just came with both an Librarian and an Captain In term armor. This next box would have made so many new collectors terminator army feel complete.
I just got the introductory set to dabble my toes in painting and a couple small battles. I got it over here in the US for 15%off msrp at my local hobby shop. If I like it, they got like 18 Leviathan boxes and said I could have one for $185 it’s like right at 26% off. That’s awesome!!
this hobby is at least 3 times more expensive than 10 years ago and way less figurines aha - that is why i gave it up. Feels like an absolute scam nowadays
Very important thing to note, the softcover rule book is better than the slimmed down, hardcover 'The Rules' book because the softcover one has combat patrol missions in the back whereas The Rules doesn't have them at all.
Yeah, Assault on Black Reach was a great deal. - Dice, templates, the rulebook - Space Marine HQ - 10 Tactical Marines - 5 Terminators - 1 Dreadnaught (with a multimelta arm that was only available through kitbashing or ForgeWorld up til this point) - Ork HQ - 5 Ork Nobz - 20 Ork Boyz - 3 Koptas (first time in plastic) Retail price in USA: $75 I can’t tell you how many of those boxes sold and got new people into the hobby. And veteran gamers bought that box up to expand their existing armies (Hell, I started an Ork army BECAUSE of that starter box).
The mid tier box probably the best value. The terrain addition to this and the biggest necrom starter in 9th is kinda a feels bad. Doubling price for some terrain because GW prices all sprues the same. The old box insert terrain was a great idea, I've used it plenty of times. And if I'm a new player or using this to start a new army I want the most playable models as possible. Also $100USD about what I picture is the most someone is going to impulse buy into this game. Which I think Leviathan priced a lot of people out who weren't already committed to this game.
The issue with the mid tier box is that the armies within aren't combat patrols. GW tries to promote combat patrol as the step into Warhammer way of playing. If you need to buy the missing models separately without discount, you are almost paying the same amount as you would for the ultimate starter box ... which is why the mid tier box is a huge trap and feel bad box. The introductory box is nice for anyone totally new to the hobby and unsure if they are gonna like it. The ultimate starter is the best box for new players that are 100% committed into getting into WH but don't own an army yet. Every other person is most likely best served by buying a combat patrol of the faction they like. At least that is my opinion about it 🙂
Love the videos! Very jealous of your big terrain pieces and how much time you get to spend modelling! I got a Leviathan Box and I'm a bit gutted it hasn't come with some terrain to be honest! I did manage to get the game boards and the game tokens with it though! Keep up the good work 👍 Its channels like yours that have inspired me to get back into the hobby! Dark Angles FTW!
are the starter packs prebuilt? my sister's husband introduced me to warhammer minis and he bought me a tau pathfinder killteam and i put together one of the guys so far
bro just get the intraductory set, its way less expensive and in the actual box you get the minis and the paint the clipers, a paint brush, dice, literaly all you need to start, wich you do not have in the ultimate starter. and just watch a video of how to play 40k on youtube and you will be ready for your first quick game! And if you have the money for a big box just get a leviathan box...where i live in north america it's almost the same price😅!
I feel like it was a mistake to not include a shade in the intro set. Shoulda had an Earthshade. Shading for me was the "ah ha" moment when I first started where I could see awesome results in a fast fun way. It got me hooked and they add a lot so I think they should have done that.
the only thing that puts me out of trying this for the first time is all the painting, not for me if there was boxset already painted models i would give a try and buy a box
The introductory set is brilliant. It gives an actual full introduction to the hobby to someone who is curious about the hobby. The starter set is a trap. The ultimate box is almost perfect. I’d say the lack of a full core book with all the lore detracts from the box. All of these boxes are nominally for beginners getting started in the hobby. If you are new, getting those 200 plus pages of lore and art really helps to immerse you in the world. Still, given that GW stopped including the full core book in starter sets ages ago, it probably is one of the best starters they’ve made.
We concur! The starter set is only desirable for established players seeing cheap minis - but with the mix of models, is it even worth getting in multiples? Better off waiting for the inevitable magazine collection or box splits
i always find videos like this kind of amusing because at the time id just had my birthday so i had more than enough money to get the leviathan box from wayland games and because i got if there they gave me an extra freebie in the way of deployment markers, so i never really thought what would be the best spend
Hi, thank you for this detailed presentation. Are the spacemarines of all these kits always Ultra marines? I'm not familiar with the game so I'm not sure to understand what it takes to transform a Space marine squad from Ultra marines to Dark angels for exemple. I'm not talking about specific units but just the basic generic one. Do you just need to paint the Space marine in green instead of blue and the terminator in ivory and green? Do you need to replace stickers and some sculpted symbols? Are there any of these in the starters?
Yes you need to change the colours and symbols if you want to change the faction. For games running the official rules they must look like the faction you are playing to be legal for the game. Home games people don't care
honestly, as someone who bought the leviathan box and who's folks are getting interested in getting some models to paint and maybe play, the ultimate box appeals to me a lot for something to get them. 2 full combat patrols, one for each of them, a board, some terrain and the mini rules, all three of which would be great to have, though admittedly I wish there was a bit more to the terrain, but that's my only real complaint.
meanwhile, battletech starter box: $60. Comes with rulebook, mini novel, lore primer, two double-sides map sheets, two dice and two full teams of minis.
I think Rob started a Necron army back in the day but not sure what the status is as he is fairly busy and not really appearing in TTT videos much anyways.
TBF you would need to buy the coloured primers for two combat patrols which they can't ship with the box and has to be a separate item and there's a lot of different paints needed and many different colour schemes it's better for them to just stay separate
I got the starter box based off this review. I was going to get some anyways. These things are a pain in the ass to put together and paint. I suck at painting but if you put mine together I'll paint yours.
Yes. They are a great faction to start with. Plenty of law, bespoke characters and their rules are some of the most well defined in the game. Note: they are strongest in melee.
Currently reading/listening to 40K lore, plan on buying some sets and considering these sets and black templars, open to suggestions/tips. I'm just now dipping my toes into it.
Planning to pick this up for a new series on my channel. This video has been very helpful, though I'd have liked a better look at the booklet included.
He minis look great, although I intend to get the mid range starter set as its got those new terminators and I am unable to get them in any other way currently
Oh wow, outsider here hoping to get into 40k when life gets better, and although i knew its expensive and i knew gw has been raising prices recently, actually seeing the prices of these starter kits for the first time almost made me cry. I guess ill never actually be able to get into it and now im actually sad, like my heart actually broke seeing these prices. 😢
Also just finding out more about figurines and all that after knowing about 40k for years without ever checking prices. If you are not gonna play tournaments and just play with friends 3d print or buy 3d printed ones, waaaay cheaper
I don't need any paint or cutting pliers or terrain, just miniatures for my Curiosly Assembled Collection. But bloody Games Workshop didn't send the Leviathan box to the retailer where I usually buy, so I can't get a good deal on it, otherwise there's no point. And so I would buy a Leviathan, but I will have to buy an average middle starter set, probably.
Thought the Starter Set section was misleading showing painted figures. Remember we are talking about potential newbies who are looking at getting their first figures and trying the game. Also I would certainly guess the painted figures are not using paints limited to that provided in the basic set. I appreciate wanting to show your well painted figures off but is this really the place? Not trying to be disheartening, hopefully this comment is seen as constructive.
Ma fille de 10ans préfère peintre que de jouer. Mais c'est indiqué partout figurine non monté non peinte. Ça peut justement motivé de voir les autres et de belle peinture
Leviathan Cost 150 Ultimate Starter Cost 125 with a change of 5 Sternguard, 10 Neurogaunts, and Data Cards for a not so good looking terrain 😥 Idk about you guys but I'd rather get the Levi Box for 25 more with more models and cards and dice tray that is more useful in game..
Heya. Great video. I have a question. My son has shown an interest in 40k and I’d like to support him in this (disclaimer I’m getting seriously hooked into the lore myself) however he’s turning 8 in August and I’m not sure if it’s too early for him? The actual game seems pretty complex even to me, and maybe way way out of his reach, also some of the themes are very dark and perhaps not suitable yet? Would you suggest just getting a few models and paints and just starting out like that? Then he can discover more about it as he grows? Cheers.
So in my experience as a game store owner, typically kids get the full grasp around 11-13. However some particularly passionate or focused kids seem capable at that age of 8-10, but it definitely needs to be a core interest for them. The lore is deep and dark, but it's easy avoid as most of its depth is buried in thick black library novels, and overall it is a satire. There are some great children focused books they released if you can get your hands on them, focusing on child protagonists and aimed towards 10-12 year olds that could be a great start. The hobby itself is a fantastic parent child shared experience, but just dip your toe in, it's easy to be a "too hard" experience that might get forgotten about in a few weeks at that age. Obviously, it's up to you to decide what is best for your child, but that is some broad advice. If he is really keen, the best starting spot would be just the basic intro set with some models and paints, don't worry too much about the game, and keep it PG with the child focused lore books. "Warhammer Adventures"

What about the primer for the figures?
The Original star craft artwork for the tyranids looks so cool.. what could've been.
Think you will ever paint and make Necrons?!??
I think Rob started a Necron army back in the day but not sure what the status is as he is fairly busy and not really appearing in TTT videos much anyways.
That's a nice breakdown of those boxes!
Is Warhammer 40k Ultimate Starter Set good choice for someone whos own already Warhammer 40k Command edition?
just curious, you give the price fo uk, us and australia, why not include the €?
I got the fourth addition work marine box, kept the copters, gave the Terminators an book to my boy
Assault on Black Reach the best, 80 bucks for a dred, 5 terminators, spacemarine tact squad and captain, and whatever else the orks had.
All starter sets should have the paints and such included . I'd feel ripped off if i bought one and that stuff wasnt with it
TBF you would need to buy the coloured primers for two combat patrols which they can't ship with the box and has to be a separate item and there's a lot of different paints needed and many different colour schemes it's better for them to just stay separate
great video, good to see gw is recognising talent ;)
I got the starter box based off this review. I was going to get some anyways. These things are a pain in the ass to put together and paint. I suck at painting but if you put mine together I'll paint yours.
“Risen out of inflation” 😂😂😂
Hi just wondering if the blood angel space marines are good for a starter
Yes. They are a great faction to start with. Plenty of law, bespoke characters and their rules are some of the most well defined in the game. Note: they are strongest in melee.
I bought the Ultimate Starter Set for myself.
Having absolutly nothing, that Box really jump started me.
Was going to get the leviathan set... Not worried about price, it's 300 dollars in Canada.. should I still get that? I can build terrain too
Been painting warhammer figures for a year but honestly, I'll probably still pick up some of these even though I play imperial guard
I remember my first starter set, assault on Blackreach.
I would do it just for fun I love painting
"Average" is over-selling that brush.
You're right. My sarcasm wasn't strong enough. The starter brush is hot garbage
Aggressively shite?
Leviathan cost 140 USD in Norway at the start now 160 USD
He minis look great, although I intend to get the mid range starter set as its got those new terminators and I am unable to get them in any other way currently
Goddamnit this video convinced me to buy the Ultimate box.
Space Hulk is the entry to forever. 🔥🔥🔥
Goes it have the mission cards in it?
Are these snapfit minis or more traditional?
I bought the Ultimate Starter box, im excited for my first warhammer experience.
Y after staring with the Leviathan set I almost wish I waited because would be nice to start with terrain and matts and such
Are these the new gaunts with special weapons?
No these would be the same models from leviathan
*shakes fist*
Oh wow, outsider here hoping to get into 40k when life gets better, and although i knew its expensive and i knew gw has been raising prices recently, actually seeing the prices of these starter kits for the first time almost made me cry. I guess ill never actually be able to get into it and now im actually sad, like my heart actually broke seeing these prices. 😢
Also just finding out more about figurines and all that after knowing about 40k for years without ever checking prices. If you are not gonna play tournaments and just play with friends 3d print or buy 3d printed ones, waaaay cheaper
1:33 hold up… my brother got me that box after id spent all of 2023 texting him questions. Now i wonder if he saw this video.
The middle box is definitely the best value for raw minis for an established collector!
Do you not get transfers in this box?
I got Leviathan for $300 CDN. (CDN monopoly money is roughly the same as AUS dollareedoos.)
Definitely worth it vs. Ultimate starter.
if i can get a ultmate starter set for €128 or the starter set for €68. what would be the best deal? seeing as i am new to the hobby
10:11 what unit is it?
First time I've noticed the Level Up 5e books, have you made content about it or is it just something you enjoy?
You don’t need to paint them.
And it’s literally plasters everywhere on the box: painting and assembly required
Does it come with paint or not
Nope
black reach was the pinnacle of starter boxes, change my mind
Leviathan Cost 150
Ultimate Starter Cost 125 with a change of 5 Sternguard, 10 Neurogaunts, and Data Cards for a not so good looking terrain 😥
Idk about you guys but I'd rather get the Levi Box for 25 more with more models and cards and dice tray that is more useful in game..
In Australia the difference is $120
Have I missed something? Is Jazza no longer doing TTT
2/3 of a legal Ripper Swarm 😂
Right now I can get the Ultimate Starter for $210 or Leviathan for $250. Seems like Leviathan is the much better value, right?
Can I make a suggestion on your Custom Space Bears?
Name them simply….. The Kodiaks
I suck at painting. Wish we had some product that was pre painted
You will forever suck if you don't do anything

Wow thank you for such an in depth reply. I defo feel more confidant going into this with him now. I’ll have a look out for the stories you mentioned and I’m looking forward to getting a stater paint set and miniatures to get started with.
He’s already picked out Necrons as his favourites, so it will be something involving those.
Once again thanks and we will be watching some of your videos together soon.
Ben (and Alex).
I bought Leviathan, am I screwed?
