I think it's really nice when eperienced painter gives such valuable lesson for newbies just beginning their adventure. You shown how we can (not perfectly, but quite elegant) paint miniatures from starter set without battery of different paints, but with just paints from starter pack. Thanks!

Ive just gotten my first war hammer set today. Its the two ones you are painting but a different set. When i finished painting the white one, I knew something was missing, so i watched a bunch of videos. And when i heard you say to water down the most watery thing i have witch was margos purple i decided to give it a go. And my lord it gave new life to it. So thank you very much.
I´ve started playing Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 a few days ago. This really re-sparked my interest in the universe. Thank you so much for the tutorial video, it made it very easy to get an understanding of how and where to start, as a complete beginner (I´ve painted miniatures before, but it´s been 10+ years).

Amazing tutorial! I love how you get into every step and not skip anything.. I watched numerous other tutorials and no one showed how to water down the colors, they just assumed things! I probably would have figured it out on my own but it's annoying when steps are skipped! Love it, thank you!

Got my blue base on after priming with chaos black primer. Nice thin coats, looks like I have kept it smooth. Next is the black detailing. Taking my time, keep coming back to this video for guidance.

Only just discovered you mate. This is one of the best beginner tutorials I've seen in years!!! Very informative and the step-by-step is very, very professional. I'm building up British and French Napoleonic armies atm and even though I've been painting miniatures for years it's no bad thing to get back to basics... a mate wants me to try Warhammer and the Ultramarines are my favourites to look at so your tutorial is a huge help! And just to add to this if we were to drybrush to get a good highlight would we need to do this straight after we apply a maccragge blue base or after we’ve done all the details
I would paint between the armour first so you can clean any mistakes. Then recess shade and drybrush. After this I would do the weapons and the steps in order 👌🏻
Brilliant. I'm already deeply involved in the hobby, but I still enjoyed watching anyway. It reminds me of when I got started with the Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternals with Paint Set starter box all those years ago when Soul Wars was new. Cheers!
Oh hell yeah an updated video, started recently with this set and ive done the space marine thru the older tutorial so far! I was thinking about what to use as reference for the tyranid, now i can watch this! Also i didn't have blue tac so i used double sided tape, hope that helps someone else!
Nice guide. But even for beginners I recommend and undercoat so the base paints adhere better. Even a cheap can of grey plastic primer from a Halfords in the UK or even pound store black spray paint is fine. Shouldn't blow cost out.

One of the best tutorials I’ve watched and I’ve watched 20+ I know why you never did layering/contrast because it’s a beginner class but definitely could have with how you explain things so clearly
I just started this hobby like a week ago. Now I have 32 paints [a lot of shades and technical] and my biggest hurdle is accidental touches :( I got myself magnifying glass to help me aim but still I from time to time mess up, which means I have to do yet another QC pass with same colors. After like 15 hours I am still in pre-nuln oil phase of painting about 17 miniatures [adepta sororitas] (as denoted in duncan tutorial). I still have to do QC abaddon black pass after all other passes. It's undending. But so much fun to see the result and the zen feeling doing it!
As long as your enjoying it. That’s important. When you start, it’s going go take a lot of getting use to and learning brush control. The more you do the better we get. Mounting your miniature onto something you can hold like I show in the video will help a lot 😃 but keep practising and you’ll get there. I believe in you 💪🏻 good luck

What great timing on this video. My first miniatures and tools are supposed to arrive today and last weekend i watched your tutorial on Necrons and Space Marines from 2 years ago. I was just looking for it again and saw this one. I have wanted to get into 40k tabletop for quite awhile and am most interested in the war game but excited to get to painting also and my wife is an artist so naturally I am diving in head first with the Leviathan box set.
@@TableTopReadyTH-cam i noticed you used watered down abaddon black instead of Abraxas Earthshade which you used in your previous video. Why the change?
I actually tried both ways because I do like the clean look of not having everything shaded. The black was a lot more punishing and specific to the armor so I used the abraxas earthshade for shading the recessed lines. It was more forgiving on the metalic bits, leathers and in hard to reach areas. Now im cleaning it up with the blue and its looking really nice. Tomorrow I will try for some highlighting. For my first ever mini's I'm doing a batch of 10 flame torch Ultramarines. I figure even if i mess up a bit at least they are all uniform haha
I use to use shades for recess shading but now I like to use the paints. This is becuase the paints provide more of consist strong colour. it's a choice though :) if you prefer the shades then thats whats right for you :D keep working hard and tryng things out is how we learn and get better quicker.
Im going to be honest and say thank you for this video. I didnt know they made this 2 peice pack and ive wanted to try painting WH but didn't want to buy a $75 to $200 pack just to maybe find out i didnt like it. Super easy to follow you!

So if your a new painter you might as well make a wet pallet it can easily be made with a Tupperware I've even used old plastic lunch meat containers cleaned first of course. Then fold like 5 paper towels so they fit in the container then put a peice of parchment paper on top of your paper towels tats also cut to fit. Your paper towel will keep moisture and the parchment with seperate your paint and keep it wet and usable much longer you can always put the lid on and come back tomorrow

Well one thing I do appreciate with the newer miniatures is that they can be built with limited use of glue. I started off with 4th edition high elves and then moved off the 40K 2nd Edition. The miniatures were far smaller and fully utilized glue to build. Man, when I look at some of my first space marines I wish I knew to thin my paints lol. Cause they are just a lump of blue and yellow paint now that I look back on them.
@@TableTopReadyTH-cam I was just thinking how much worse a mini painted without primer looks and how the paint doesn't stick very good. Just a bad experience for a newcomer, I think anyway.
Sometimes I need to remind myself that I just started and it’s ok when my first space marines look bad and I shouldn’t got ahead and paint a dreadnought when I need to learn more about how to paint
absolulety. I've been painting for over 25 years now and I still have to remind myself that its okay to make mistakes and get things wrong. As long as you keep painting and painting with intention then nothing can stop you :) good luck

Painting my very first miniature set now, 10th edition introductory set. This video has given me a lot of confidence that my minis won't look good awful. Thank you for the help. Edit- Is it okay to use normal acrylic paints like for canvas on minis? It may seem like a dumb question but like I said I'm a noob.
awsome, I hope your enjoying the hobby. Personally I would avoid acrylic paints that are specific for miniature painting. They have different consistencies and the pigment strength can be poor, especially for cheaper stuff. There are cheaper alternatives than citedal, for example I'm a bug fan of Vallejo paints and you can use a 'conversion chart' to find the same colours. we spend a lot of money on the miniatures so its worth investing in paint for them. as well when starting out just worry about your base colours and slowly get more paints later when you can

Been taking very slow treating each model as its own art project. Bought some scarlet, gunmetal and silver. Getting a lot of use from mixing the scarlet.
Can you please do a guide on how to paint gems/ lenses, because I don’t know how to do the glowing affect on the eyes and other areas on my space marines.
I do a lot of these smaller details throughout the main tutorials. In different ways so you could choose whats best for you. I'll also continue to cover these in the main videos so you'll always see the most up to date way I like to do them :)
Enjoyed this guide. Is there a shopping list to follow by any chance? I see you've linked firestorm games and the categories which is great, but a list of the items you used would help so I don't have to go back through the video to find out. However it's a great guide and will help me get the painting started now that I've done the building and priming phase.
this is why I made this video, to give you the information and knowledge so it isn't so over whelming. if you follow what I do in the video with out any expectations and just give it a try then you'll love it. I would reccomend doing an undercoat but if your fllowing this video then its not needed just for 2 miniatures
thats really upto you, seeing as you have the tools and paint set you could expand to one of the starter sets. I really just wanted to show how a miniature is painted and explain all the ideas and why things are done the way they are. the information can then be continued on to other projects regardless :D

welcome to the hobby. you should be able to use the paints in this set to paint them. they just black, red and silver pretty much :) just get all your base colours painted and then as you get more comfortable you can try other techniques. whatch my how to better collect and paint warhammer video

I'd like to use them but am not sure at what stage during the painting to apply them. And secondly, do you ever enjoy applying weather or battle damage? Thanks for all your work.
I love transfers and use them any chance I get. applying transfers tend to be the last thing to do on a miniature in most situations. watch my beginner ultramarines video and also my very first video on the channel. for weathering and battle damage I show that in a mix of tutorials where I think the miniature needs it :) good luck

Would it be worth using a soldering holder (using something to protect the miniature of course) to act as a steady base? It also gives me access to a magnifying glass
See once you have done the base undercoats, do you still need to add water to your paints for example when you're going over your miniature once coated to paint on the black?

Ultramarines blue the contrast? it would work as Ultramarines Blue is very wet and more like an ink. I your saying use Ultramrines blue first and then drybrush after, then this will obsolutly work :D go for it

I would paint between the armour first so you can clean any mistakes. Then recess shade and drybrush. After this I would do the weapons and the steps in order 👌🏻

Oh hell yeah an updated video, started recently with this set and ive done the space marine thru the older tutorial so far! I was thinking about what to use as reference for the tyranid, now i can watch this!
Also i didn't have blue tac so i used double sided tape, hope that helps someone else!
Double sided tape is a great idea. I just struggle to peel off the other side of the tape haha good look with the tyranid 💪🏻
Nice guide. But even for beginners I recommend and undercoat so the base paints adhere better. Even a cheap can of grey plastic primer from a Halfords in the UK or even pound store black spray paint is fine. Shouldn't blow cost out.

One of the best tutorials I’ve watched and I’ve watched 20+ I know why you never did layering/contrast because it’s a beginner class but definitely could have with how you explain things so clearly
I cover a lot of different details in other tutorials and I do have a contrast tutorial idea in my head :D
I just started this hobby like a week ago. Now I have 32 paints [a lot of shades and technical] and my biggest hurdle is accidental touches :( I got myself magnifying glass to help me aim but still I from time to time mess up, which means I have to do yet another QC pass with same colors. After like 15 hours I am still in pre-nuln oil phase of painting about 17 miniatures [adepta sororitas] (as denoted in duncan tutorial). I still have to do QC abaddon black pass after all other passes. It's undending. But so much fun to see the result and the zen feeling doing it!
As long as your enjoying it. That’s important. When you start, it’s going go take a lot of getting use to and learning brush control. The more you do the better we get. Mounting your miniature onto something you can hold like I show in the video will help a lot 😃 but keep practising and you’ll get there. I believe in you 💪🏻 good luck

What great timing on this video. My first miniatures and tools are supposed to arrive today and last weekend i watched your tutorial on Necrons and Space Marines from 2 years ago. I was just looking for it again and saw this one. I have wanted to get into 40k tabletop for quite awhile and am most interested in the war game but excited to get to painting also and my wife is an artist so naturally I am diving in head first with the Leviathan box set.

@@TableTopReadyTH-cam i noticed you used watered down abaddon black instead of Abraxas Earthshade which you used in your previous video. Why the change?
I actually tried both ways because I do like the clean look of not having everything shaded. The black was a lot more punishing and specific to the armor so I used the abraxas earthshade for shading the recessed lines. It was more forgiving on the metalic bits, leathers and in hard to reach areas. Now im cleaning it up with the blue and its looking really nice. Tomorrow I will try for some highlighting. For my first ever mini's I'm doing a batch of 10 flame torch Ultramarines. I figure even if i mess up a bit at least they are all uniform haha
I use to use shades for recess shading but now I like to use the paints. This is becuase the paints provide more of consist strong colour. it's a choice though :) if you prefer the shades then thats whats right for you :D keep working hard and tryng things out is how we learn and get better quicker.

That scrapping tool is very good considering it comes with the paint pack, mine is 1.5 years old and still works.

Personally I prefer the back of a hobby knife blade but realistically it's the same concept so either way works.

So if your a new painter you might as well make a wet pallet it can easily be made with a Tupperware I've even used old plastic lunch meat containers cleaned first of course. Then fold like 5 paper towels so they fit in the container then put a peice of parchment paper on top of your paper towels tats also cut to fit. Your paper towel will keep moisture and the parchment with seperate your paint and keep it wet and usable much longer you can always put the lid on and come back tomorrow

Well one thing I do appreciate with the newer miniatures is that they can be built with limited use of glue. I started off with 4th edition high elves and then moved off the 40K 2nd Edition. The miniatures were far smaller and fully utilized glue to build. Man, when I look at some of my first space marines I wish I knew to thin my paints lol. Cause they are just a lump of blue and yellow paint now that I look back on them.

Primer is always needed. I'd argue a new person needs it more than anyone.
if they want to commit to the hobby then I agree, but not for 2 minitures wanting to try the hobby out. it just ads cost and another thing to learn

Sometimes I need to remind myself that I just started and it’s ok when my first space marines look bad and I shouldn’t got ahead and paint a dreadnought when I need to learn more about how to paint
absolulety. I've been painting for over 25 years now and I still have to remind myself that its okay to make mistakes and get things wrong. As long as you keep painting and painting with intention then nothing can stop you :) good luck

Painting my very first miniature set now, 10th edition introductory set. This video has given me a lot of confidence that my minis won't look good awful. Thank you for the help.
Edit- Is it okay to use normal acrylic paints like for canvas on minis? It may seem like a dumb question but like I said I'm a noob.
awsome, I hope your enjoying the hobby. Personally I would avoid acrylic paints that are specific for miniature painting. They have different consistencies and the pigment strength can be poor, especially for cheaper stuff.
There are cheaper alternatives than citedal, for example I'm a bug fan of Vallejo paints and you can use a 'conversion chart' to find the same colours. we spend a lot of money on the miniatures so its worth investing in paint for them.
as well when starting out just worry about your base colours and slowly get more paints later when you can

Been taking very slow treating each model as its own art project. Bought some scarlet, gunmetal and silver. Getting a lot of use from mixing the scarlet.
Can you please do a guide on how to paint gems/ lenses, because I don’t know how to do the glowing affect on the eyes and other areas on my space marines.
I do a lot of these smaller details throughout the main tutorials. In different ways so you could choose whats best for you. I'll also continue to cover these in the main videos so you'll always see the most up to date way I like to do them :)

However it's a great guide and will help me get the painting started now that I've done the building and priming phase.

I really want to get into this but a bit intimidated since I’m not super good with painting. And do you have to use primer before painting?
this is why I made this video, to give you the information and knowledge so it isn't so over whelming. if you follow what I do in the video with out any expectations and just give it a try then you'll love it. I would reccomend doing an undercoat but if your fllowing this video then its not needed just for 2 miniatures

Hello, how much should i water down the paint so i dont under do or over do the paint with water.
i always say thin your paint with the same amount of water, but it does come with pratice and expriance :)

thats really upto you, seeing as you have the tools and paint set you could expand to one of the starter sets. I really just wanted to show how a miniature is painted and explain all the ideas and why things are done the way they are. the information can then be continued on to other projects regardless :D

In terms of dry brushing, as I suck at highlighting manually, would you dry brush before the main shading?
I would do the drybrushing after shading. don't give up on highlighting though, give it time :D you'll get there

welcome to the hobby. you should be able to use the paints in this set to paint them. they just black, red and silver pretty much :) just get all your base colours painted and then as you get more comfortable you can try other techniques. whatch my how to better collect and paint warhammer video

Hi there, thanks for all your tutorials. I look forward to trying the Adepta Sororitas meself! But I notice in your videos you don't talk about the transfers/decals. Do you not like to use them? I'd like to use them but am not sure at what stage during the painting to apply them. And secondly, do you ever enjoy applying weather or battle damage? Thanks for all your work.
I love transfers and use them any chance I get. applying transfers tend to be the last thing to do on a miniature in most situations. watch my beginner ultramarines video and also my very first video on the channel. for weathering and battle damage I show that in a mix of tutorials where I think the miniature needs it :) good luck

Would it be worth using a soldering holder (using something to protect the miniature of course) to act as a steady base? It also gives me access to a magnifying glass

yes, you'll need to thin your paints generally. it just makes them better to work with

How do we feel about using ultramarine blue with the dry brush technique?
Ultramarines blue the contrast? it would work as Ultramarines Blue is very wet and more like an ink. I your saying use Ultramrines blue first and then drybrush after, then this will obsolutly work :D go for it
