Electric YZ85 Dirt Bike - Part 2

  • In this video we are taking my old YZ85 dirt bike frame that I've had for years and converting it to electric. We are using a 72V 8000W hub motor and converting it to mid drive to solve the unsprung weight issue that hub motors have and installing the motor on the swing arm.

If you want the shocks to match, move the passenger side out. It has plenty of room to be moved outwards. It'll keep your OCD under wraps.

Please make the right rear shock symmetrical to the left. Also the idea of the controller etc being under the gutted gastank seems like a really good idea, aesthetically and rainproof wise.
The ground clearance is plenty, but I would add a skid plate.

  • @skyfreakwi
    @skyfreakwi ปีที่แล้ว +18

Ok man, I know the motor doesn't have much leverage on the suspension but that is still unsprung weight. As I see it anyway... It probably won't affect the handling as much but still. Everything so far is unsprung weight. The dual shock setup is freaking awesome! The symmetry from the side is what people will see. The asymmetrical rear view will only be noticable by people that are LOSING! And if they are trying to pass you they might be distracted by it, also to your benefit! Regardless this is an awesome project. Also 53" wheelbase is totally fine it's not an 80cc bike anymore so it can grow up a bit. And the ginormous swing arm will almost definitely aid the handling. Look at any rocket bike historically and you'll see shorter motors front to back and longer swing arms.
So in conclusion, good job, good design, good engineering, good foresight and just a giant thumbs up to you with a high five on the side! You can stop reading this now and get back to work...

Great work! keeping the motor on the swing arm but near the pivot is ideal! chain length stays the same and you could even make a box around it.
from a conceptual point 1 shock >> 2. its hard to get springs or dampers to match. Yamaha was the first to have single spring rear suspension and dominated offroading with it. cars have a hell of a time being symmetric without adjustments.

I would think if you could mount the motor on the opposite side of the frame from the back wheel, it would lesson the unsprung weight of the wheel and create no added unsprung weight. The way you have it adds a lot of weight to the swing arm.

Awesome project, If you still have the engine, the other way to do this conversion is to install a motor where the magneto normally goes and rip the conrod, piston, cylinder etc out, and drive the crank from the electric motor, you can then still have access to all the gears, or another way to do this is make the motor shaft of the one you have the actual swing arm shaft giving you good geometry and reducing space required and still giving you a fixed chain tension.

    I think it's a good idea overall.
However, if the motor is mounted on the swing arm and receives the impact as it is, the shaft may be damaged. Also, by releasing the left and right connection of the swingarm pivot, the lateral rigidity will decrease, which will affect the handling. Also, if you don't think about the center of gravity, the rear tires will wobble and become unstable.
I wish this project every success.

Probably too many comments for you to get to this one but you could attack your symmetry issue by going old school Yamaha. Look at the late seventies IT and YZ bikes where the first use of a mono-shock was more horizontally oriented. Fab a hoop across the swing arm over the cross brace high enough to give you clearances for twin shock mounts to clear chain and not interfere with e-motor. Brace that loop on both sides from the rear on the swing arm. You can then get some symmetry back and maintain travel if you forward lean your shocks. Added benefit is that you will spread out the weight load of the rear shock lower mount over a larger area on your extended swing arm. Mock it up, tack it and see if you can achieve reasonable sag with the shocks on hand. Look at from the perspective of mounting two "mono-shocks" on the rear swing arm with lower perches elevated enough to give you your clearances. This will add more sprung weight to the rear, but it might be functional as well as cool looking...just a thought. Keep up the great content!

For the left side shock why not mount it above the chain with the mount going around the chain down to the swing arm then you'd just have to mirror the same mount for the right side shock. It would only lift the shocks up a couple inches then you'd have it perfectly symmetrical

Maybe for the rear suspension, instead of mounting the shocks right on the arm, you could use a set of push-arms and mount the shock(s) further in the frame, like some mountain bike with rear suspension does? This would make it more symetrical, and can increase the efficiency of travel and maybe event render one shock sufficient.
Nice projet so far! Way better than the previous bike already!

I would have moved the right rear shock out to maintain the look and balance the stresses applied to both sides of the frame when landing from jumps etc... It looked like there was nothing limiting how far out the shock could be moved and it would appear that it would allow more clearance for wiring and splash guards later so it might be worth cutting back off now to modify before final welding.

  • @aserta

7:34 make the chain longer and put a swing arm with a spring pushing up, with the pivot point where the brick is, and the reach such that the chain wraps around the rear gear. You'll have more chain on the gear that way and it pulls it out even more.
23:17 could also use cantilever arm suspension, placing the shocks where the gas tank would be with the reservoirs downwards. That way, there's only a rod in the rear, not the whole shock.

What you have there is an outrunner that is used to be inside of the wheel itself. If you had the motor then it's ok but inrunners are better for this type of setup, they are much smaller.

I think this huge motor of yours will be way better than any mid-drive motor mate. Let people may mock you man it's actually a genius idea as the motor has a shed load of torque, it's design to turn something the size of a wheel, by putting that little sprocket on there you've increased the torque big time, you've more than doubled the torque of that motor, tripled maybe 👍🏼
A longer suspension arm would give you better stability, this monster will probably want to throw you off the back 🤣 live for the danger 🤣👍🏼

The bushing material used in racing is fairly stiff, its an acetal plastic called, Delrin. A material offering more give, or compliance, is Polyurethane.
edit: A possible solution to your shock symmetry problem...
Weld a riser on the lateral cross bar of the swingarm that allows a shorter, more modern uni-shock to clear the motor housing, w/ the upper mount attached as required... symmetrically.

At this point it looks like it's a hub motor electric motorcycle with the hub divorced from the rear wheel. It doesn't seem like there will be much advantage. Maybe unsprung weight because of the leverage of the motor being closer to the swing arm pivot, and the shocks. It would be cool to see the difference between this one and an actual hub mount one.

I am loving the look of this thing and I can't wait to see it riding... It looks so mean w/ those dual shocks too, like it wants to dig a trench every time you hit the throttle. ❤😁👍
Edit: You should have tried to reheat the bushings and squished them a little in the press... You might be able to do that on the swingarm so it holds itself in.

Build a hoop for the two shocks and you can place them symmetrically

That's coming along sweet !! I'd maybe make a reverse u channel over motor for suspension mount ,with some gussets, to support the back and forth motion maybe .
Only downside I can see to this is how long the shock ab ,and travel is gonna be ?!

6:28 you shoud add a" shim" inbetween the clamp bolt and the axel or Safety Washer ", Hub Retaining Clip" , better safe than sorry , this is hi torque and will work it self lose over time

you could use the gas tank as extra snack storage if the controller doesnt take up too much space inside.

Seems like the hub motor sprocket isn’t centered. While spinning the wheel by hand, it’s clear that the chain tightens and loosens, along with it virtually having up and down travel. Careful it doesn’t cause failure.

you could move the right hand rear shock mount out a little to match the left side, that's how old twin shock bikes were.
