      Personally I love the album. No I respect your opinion, you have to give Spencer credit because for every song he dedicates a movie to; he puts all his heart into it. No one in the metalcore scene loves horror than Spencer ( the lead of the band.)
      he has An entire living room dedicated to Horror. He has the largest collection of real authentic props, and horror based items I have ever seen. Even a glass table case holding Jason himself trapped and caged inside.
      You might thinking all the extra cheesy horror things that he adds to the songs is corny… well not exactly, Because there was a reason for this.
      For example… In their song communion of the cursed; Dedicated to the original movie exorcist portraying the ultimate evil ( a powerful demon) possessing a little girl. in the beginning Of said song; you here a recording of an exorcism going on.
      Fun fact: That exorcism clip is real! These guys actually put a real old exorcism tape recording of a girl possessed by a Devil. The grit and guttural growls of the little girls voice changing to something evil, the bones popping, speaking in Latin. it’s creepy, disturbing, but really cool that they added that attention to detail which Gives you a foreshadowing of what the song is going to be like.

    To be honest, I clicked on this review thinking it was gonna be some metal elitist complaining about the album not sounding like Burzum or something. Even though I disagree with a lot of what you said, I think this was still a well-made review and I’m happy that it wasn’t just “not black metal or death metal = bad”. A few things:
    1. Hip To Be Scared is from Patrick’s point of view, of course it would be narcissistic and vain
    2. The Chucky outfit in the “Assault & Batteries” video is more over the top and grotesque than the OG Chucky, but it’s a combined reference to his stitched together appearance in Bride of Chucky, with the red eyes of Mark Hamill’s 2019 Chucky.
    3. I have no defense for “NANANABOOBOO- FUCK YOU” other than that it got a giggle out of me and it fits Chucky’s character pretty well lol
    The cheesy or campy aspects of their music is part of the fun for me. The same way I’ll watch an over the top slasher movie and appreciate it for being a fun time even if I can’t quite take it seriously.

    While I personally enjoyed the album, I think you reviewed it well and explained quite well your point of view. I too usually dislike really cringey edgy stuff, but for some reason I feel like for me INK made it work most of the time on this one. I think maybe because it feels like they're doing it on purpose? Also, their vocals and instrumentation are just phenomenal! But I also do agree that the ending line of Assault & Batteries was pretty cringey, haha.

    • @marciojunior5232
      @marciojunior5232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Spencer doesn't try to be an idiot and it makes a total difference when you think of other edgy things. He's just telling stories from another point of view and very theatrical.

  • @marciojunior5232
    @marciojunior5232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Speaking from the point of view of someone outside the US, I'm Brazilian and I found the video very interesting for discussing this issue of "banalization of evil" with melodic choruses, but I see it differently.
    For me Spencer does two important things in this regard:
    1. He builds history from the point of view of evil. And obviously for the lyrical self as terrifying as he is, his story is of a romance with his desires.
    2. Understand the popcorn or trash side of horror in movies used as inspiration and this is the most important. It's not like the songs justify or soften the badness, they just know where they're coming from and it's from a confusing place.
    It takes a while not to take what the band does so seriously, but once you understand it's success.
    P.S.: And think about the "wow that's cringe for an adult" part cause this is the reaction of 16 boy trying to be serious and burning all his albuns of melodic or funny bands to listen things more "mature". This is what I don't expect when I listen INK.

  • @starfishprime23
    @starfishprime23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I love ink cause they dont take themselves too seriously. It's just good fun entertainment. It doesnt need to be the greatest album ever. They have cringeworthy moments but it's hilarious at the same time. In my opinion alot of other bands lack the creative quirkiness ink brings to the table in their songs and more bands would benefit from doing so instead of trying to be the "super cool bad ass woke band" with no fun gimmick or depth to attach onto.

    "Says the guy in the rubber skull mask" 🤣

  • @CloudMountainJuror
    @CloudMountainJuror 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I really don't find the "nananafuckyou" line cringey at all lol, I think it's 100% intentionally hilarious and that touches like that are what make the album's tone actually stick. It feels exactly the same vibe to me as the Huey Lewis interlude you mentioned that made you smile. (Granted, I didn't watch any of the videos for the album yet, so I don't know if that would have made a difference. But just music-wise? It worked great for me. I usually avoid music videos for first listens to songs because I find the added visual element can distract from the music just as often as it can help get immersed in it.)
    So for perspective, my favorite album of the year so far is Colors II. I also enjoyed what I heard of The Work from Rivers of Nihil, which is a positive review of yours I just watched before this. So I know we've definitely got some common ground.
    That said, I kinda borderline love this INK album. I find it an unabashed celebration of horror as a genre, from the bruality to the camp, wrapped in a super theatrical bow, and I'm a sucker for theatricality. How you feel about the genericness and FNAFcore vibe is more how I felt about Silver Scream 1, mainly because that album felt supremely repetitive to me. But they diversified their songwriting more on this album and that made the whole formula click for me. I legit love a lot of the melodies on this, I think they're genuinely talented songwriters. The production quality seems perfectly appropriate because the album's not actually trying to be horrifying, just have fun with horror concepts in a hugely self-aware masturbatory way. I pretty much had a smile on my face almost the entire way through it, which really surprised me. I don't know if this helps clarify the appeal more at all, but I figured I'd try.

    Honestly the thing I love most about the band is how much they've grown as artists over the years. Comparing The Predator/Becomes the Prey and Safe is just a Shadow to their newer albums, even Every Trick in the Book, the development is hella obvious. Spencer's vocals have gotten so much better, both cleans and screams. Dan Sugarman joining in '19 just ramped everything up even more. Their lyrics are kinda cheesy, but the deliverance honestly does it for me, especially on songs like Merry Axemas and Farewell II Life. Not to mention, most of these music videos really are top-tier (flashback to them making an entire online videogame briefly), and the integration of the music INTO the videos in the way that they've done it isn't something I've seen before.
    Unfortunate you don't like the album or the band. However, I can absolutely understand your points. It, in fact, took me a few listens before I started to appreciate what I was hearing. I do kinda disagree with your point about them not being original, though. I have yet to hear a song that uses a guitar to emulate tires screeching, or a band to use licensed audio from an exorcism in their song (throw back to communion of the cursed). Nevertheless, your opinion is yours, and that's fine.

    If you don't like it, you don't like it and I respect that.
    It is important to note though, that you missed one huge key element to these guys and that's the fact that all of the songs and videos capture the feelings and vibes of the movies perfectly.
    You mentioned the corniness of Assault & Batteries but if you watch Chucky, it is one of the corniest, most over the top, ridiculous movies I've ever watched and the song reflects that with its chaotic energy and silly lines.
    The same is true for my personal favorite track; Ex-Mortis.
    That song absolutely perfectly captures the soul of the Evil Dead franchise and almost sounds like it was written by Sam Rammi himself. All the way from the voice effects reminiscent of the iconic demonic sound to the brass instruments in the background adding that feeling of silliness to the climax of the song when Ash racks the shotgun, says "swallow this" followed by a "Groovy" signifying that now he's the badass and not the deadites just like the turn in the movie(s) in the 3rd act when he does the same thing.

    So when you mention that they depict patrick bateman as a cool antihero, I see it as a depiction to fit into the album's narrative. Spencer is the killer in the story, so the band is taking the killer's perspective. I think they are showing the horror with bringing movie plots into real life, or at least that's how I choose to see it to perceive the music with a good narrative. Also the ending of assault & batteries makes it my least favorite song on the album. I like the album, but I also see several flaws with the presentation. I also love hearing critiques of things I love, and I always keep an open mind to look at things objectively.

  • @KicknNmesTaknAss
    @KicknNmesTaknAss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In HTBS it's sung from Bateman's pathetic and vain perspective. Remember the scene where he's staring in the mirror at himself with the prostitutes? So to me it makes sense that he'd idolize himself in his own head, because he does.
    They pay tribute very well and as much as they can. Yes using musical cues and lines from the actual movies could be considered unoriginal, but they do things like getting the grandson of the guy who directed the shining for that song. I think going that meta is cool as hell, and they do stuff like that a lot.
    The Chucky thing is cringe, but that's just Spencer. He's very theatrical. But that's also the point, the childish na na na na, followed by the abrupt "f you." That's Chucky, a cute, vulgar, and kinda cringe doll.
    INK has honestly sounded this way for as long as I've listened to them (Safe is just a shadow) they're their own sound entirely which is what drew me to them in the first place. Metalcore is absolutely over saturated and a lot of it sounds very similar, but INK has always stood out in the crowd. Whether it's Spencer's range or catchy hooks, I've always been drawn to it.
    Are they the most original? No. But they've always taken inspiration from movies and books. Their band name is literally a book reference. They found their niche and honestly perfected it. They are now to Horror what Our Last Night is to cover songs, except these aren't just covers but completely original songs paying tribute to horror. You say other people do this better and if that's so then please tell me where to find a better tribute to Halloween than Stabbing in the Dark, or to the Exorcist with Communion of the Cursed. I mean that sincerely I'd love to hear them.
    Obviously I disagree, but this was a well done review nonetheless. The only thing I'll get mad at is comparing them to Imagine Dragons. Again, this sound isn't new to them and is something they've done since the start. Listen to The Greatest Story Ever Told and you'll see what I mean. The FNAF comparison wasn't inaccurate though. I could absolutely see INK doing it and it sounding like that.

    I think ice nine is going in an interesting direction with their previous 2 albums. Every Trick in the book, The Predator becomes the Pray, and Safe is Just a Shadow (reshadowed ofc) were all albums that for me had no skips, and thats mostly due to me liking say 10/12 from each album, and the very few that i didnt particularly like being just ok. But with TSS and TSS2, the songs are either absolutely phenomenal (ie. F.L.Y (my favorite ink song tied with The Greatest story Ever Told) The Box, Take Your Pick, Rocking the boat, The world in my hands, and a decent handful of others), then you have just some borderline unlistenable garbo(ie. Savages, Merry Axe-Mas, Your Numbers Up, Hip to be Scared, The Shower Scene and some others).
    Then ofc the songs that i think are just meant to be fun, such as Ex-Mortis and Assault and Batteries.
    Alot of the picks for their singles i just dont understand either??? I think theyre just because the movies and IPs are more popular and will get more buzz.

The lyrics are a bit cringy, but also fun. The song composition and production is really well done. But.. I generally dislike this kind of melodic emo-y punk-y boyish sounding singing style. I think that they fall into a weird spot when it comes to their music. Is it campy and cheesy, absolutely. It's campy and cheesy in same way that musical theater is. I kind of see them as musical theater for metalcore kids. I personally listen to stuff alot closer to deathcore, but still actively enjoy the theatrical element and musicianship of INK. Sometimes you want to belt out what is essentially aggressive showtunes.
    I also think the criticism of Spencer being almost forty and still being overly performative in certain ways is due mainly to their core audience, which is aged 20+ females who enjoy the music, grew up as scene kids, and also find him attractive. It's not a knock on the fanbase, I'm just saying he's intelligent when it comes to marketing which will take you alot further success-wise than sitting in the pocket of obscurity with chunky deathcore. They are mainstream 100% because they chose to be a mainstream band.
    Essentially, I think you have to approach the schtick for what it is. Fun horror themed approachable metalcore.

I was expecting to be more afraide with the clean vocals but scratchy and gutteral like troglodyte does. Feeling the paranoia that somthing is out there in the woods looking back at you. I don't really agree with this review. While I admit, this is not better than the previous album, I feel like most of the negatives you listed for this one are why most people like them. I've been a fan for 10 years and have followed their trajectory. The reason they are so big now is because they are very marketing savvy. They have almost always drawn inspiration from horror movies but the last two albums they leaned in heavily and have blown up. They mixed metal, horror movies, and catchy music. It's kinda unbelievable that someone hasn't done something so simple yet but I guess it makes sense because their are always people like you who would have labeled it corny or unoriginal. They did it anyway and surprise surprise, people love it! And now they've branched out and are accepted by the horror community, making their audience larger and larger. So when you say you don't understand why they are popular, it's kinda a self report.

    As a fan, this album is just ok (probably like a B- on your scale) . Like with most horror movies funnily enough, the sequel just isn't as good. The song writing isn't up to par with their last couple of albums and they cut out their ballads, which were needed for the sake of variety and pacing. incredible production, high quality videos that make all horror fans feel great and enjoy the journey (which if u say the videos aren't good, you are lying to yourself), insanely creative and layered breakdowns (which feature key noises from the films they represent which is absolutely amazing), heaviness, melody, the best vocals i have ever hear in a metalcore band and very good and straightforward lines that deliver the quintessential. Yeah I agree, it is not the most musically complex song structure, however it is 100% fun and it sounds fantastic while being insanely creative. I may or may not be biased since I ve been jamming the band for years, however I always notice when albums get weaker from a band and in this case, it isn't only the best INK project, but my favourite album in the whole world to give an inside. The album really impressed me and delivered way more than I have expected. I understand why you wouldn't like it, exactly as the author mentioned. Those are the thoughts of a person who really likes it though. I might have to include that I listen to music for fun and not for technicality or anything like that, If I like the sound, I vibe and love the album.

    A fair 5.5 outta 10 for me. Funeral derangements being the highlight the rest was kinda painful

    I like this album and Ice Nine Kills. I agree with absolutely everything you have said here though. They gotta chill out with the cringe.

    Doing this review because so many people requested it yet nearly every comment is how much they suck. I’ll never understand why people spend their time shitting on stuff they don’t enjoy. You won’t see me in the comments under a limp bizkit or 5 finger death punch video ripping them apart. 🤷🏼‍♂️
    This band is supposed to be cheesy and fun. That’s the point.

      I feel like the comments have been pretty fair honestly. There were a LOT of people who love this band in my audience who were the ones that asked for it

      because the people who don't like the album swarm over these negative reviews.
      like why do dipshits who don't like the genre review this anyway?

    • @MetalTrenches
      @MetalTrenches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spectre722 I mean you're kind of right that the audience is to blame because that is how they choose to click. But me personally, I reviewed it because I was genuinely interested and I like to try new things. And again, my own audience has a bunch of INK fans that wanted to hear my thoughts. Ultimately I decided to make the review because it inspired enough thoughts to put the hours in that making a video like this takes. I think sometimes people don't realize just how much effort this ends up taking. It's not something I can just throw together. And in the end, I didn't HATE this. There is plenty of stuff I don't review at all just because I find it so boring that there is nothing interesting to even add to the conversation.

    This is a very bizarre review. If your comparing Ice Nine Kills to Imagine Dragon’s, then you haven’t heard enough Imagine Dragon’s. It’s supposed to be polished and highly produced cause that’s just the music standard of today. Even in saying that it’s so clean sounding, it has some of the heaviest breakdowns and tracks I’ve ever heard. Though I like The Lion’s Daughter. If you showed someone INK in comparison to The Lions Daughter. INK would appeal far more. And not understanding why people like them? The horror gimmick. The videos. There are NO metal bands doing anything similar and as well done as this band is. INK is keeping metal fresh and relevant still to the mainstream and we need MORE of that to keep it alive. As far as it feeling goofy and cheesy, Spencer has said himself in interviews that they like doing that to keep it feeling more fun then overly serious. I respect your opinion but as someone that reviews music which I think is awesome, try to look at things more subjectively and not just in this “underground metal” sense.

      Some of the heaviest, have you listened to the older stuff its so much heavier then this album that has only a few really heavy and brutal tracks, this album has a lot more elctro and smooth sounds compared to the other albums

    Its fun, but the song about chucky is the WORST song ive ever heard.chorus and everything but i always sing along lmao. A girl i was talking to really liked them and i said i dont get why people like them because i thought the horror movie trend was liek a im 21 years old type thing and even then youre pushing it. She said this was her FAVORITE band. So i listened to the entire album all the way through 2 times while i was at work and if i decide its not important to be good on every single level, i can have fun amd just sing along, and also, id say his vocals are really cool. I love his singing, and i adore his more deathcore screams. HOWEVER i may have missed what some songs were even referencing because i havent watched all these films

      For all of the like 12 people who will watch it from there? Yeah that’s some mad clout. I’m just always interested to meet fans who actually are willing to chat with people who think differently about various bands than I do. If you’re mad I feel like you didn’t even listen to what I had to say 🤷🏻‍♂️

    1. Ice nine kills
    2. Motionless in white
    And five finger death punch

    Interesting. I haven't ever listened to a full album by Ice Nine Kills but I heard American Nightmare, Stabbing In The Dark, and Thank God It's Friday from The Silver Scream 1 and enjoyed them a bunch. Every clip you played in this video sounded bad and do not make me want to check this album out.
