I hate how the late seasons writers made Hank so naïve and gullible. Early seasons Hank would have belittled characters like Bobby, Luanne and maybe even Peggy for thinking Ace was playing legitimately and not merely playing a hammed-up entertainment role. Remember when Hank humorlessly called out every magic trick performed by the Astounding Herrera?
Kind of like how Hank was extremely suspicious of car salesmen and thinks of them as cheats, but in a late season he's a total rube and thinks sticker price is a good deal, because a car salesman told him so. I miss "sees right through your BS" Hank.

this is what happens when a show goes on too long. it leads to writers making changes and decisions that fans won't like.
I'm not saying it's not bad writing, but I AM saying it's not that unbelievable. I know people personally that will say things like "oh all that essential oil crap is a scam" but their dad's friend they've known for decades works for an alkaline water company so that's all they drink. Hank's not gullible to ALL salesman or even all car salesmen. Just that guy for some reason.

I was thinking this was a nod to the Harlem Globetrotters, but a baseball act over basketball. Shame Ace isn't as cool those guys who guest stared on Scooby Doo twice.
Literally came here to say this! I just assumed most sports have a Globetrotter type team for fun. I didn't know they were legitimate like that. That's crazy!
Yeah they still have baseball teams like this they have their own league now as well its call banana ball. Savanah Ga has one of the leading teams atm.
Same thought the writers wanted to do an episode off the globetrotters but change the sport because they provided a baseball episode

It was likely a nod to them in at least some part. The gimmick itself is, for sure, but I'd imagine they didn't wanna do a basketball themed episode because it would've been too similar and might have felt uncreative.

This was always my big issue with later seasons where they have to come up with an exaggerated strawman character just to maintain that Hank must always be right despite being a stubborn jackass.

This. Even when the character was completely in the right Hank would get the win.
I noticed it in particular in the Earth Cleaners episode. When Hank is talking to Peter he puts on this guilt trip speech with a cadence that is that same way a parent does to a kid when they're expecting them to give in and agree to do a thing they want. Like "I guess I'll take the trash out, even though I've been working on my feet all day and just wanted to sit down."

Like, Hank? Buddy? Peter was literally following your advice from "Life in the Fast Lane." 'find the job nobody wants and do it better'. Peter even says he has no competition. If Bobby were feeling a little treacherous he could just do that. Peter's setup is just a modified tow-behind leaf vacuum and an ATV.

EXACTLY! I’m actually rewatching the show on Hulu now and I forgot why I stopped watching the later episodes and you are right. Even if Hank is DEAD WRONG, the show still gives him the win.
Not gonna lie, I'm partially on Ace's side on this one, if is for charity you can let yourself lose or just play for fun, if you begin to play serious you ruin the experience for the audience who paid for the spectacle.

A zephyr is a wind that always blows in your favor, essentially.
Not a bad name for a ball team.
It's also the name of the baseball team from a Twilight Zone episode about a baseball-playing robot (not every episode's a classic), which was in turn referenced on Mr. Burns' uniform in the Simpsons episode Homer at the Bat!

I don’t think the Ace was an ass. He donates money he doesn’t need. But when he isn’t able to put on his show, thanks to Hank and team, he kept it.
I still don’t understand why the Ace couldn’t call the cops on Hank after typing to tip his house.

The King and his PR team where real awesome. I got to see them 1 year while in residential treament as a child, when they learned I had gotten a overnight pass and saw them, they loaded me up on merch. Maybe it was a act, but honestly on the recieving end it still felt awesome.

Strictly speaking, there are no laws for what a check needs to be, so a giant novelty check as as valid as any other check.
Would need the routing/account/check numbers for the issuing bank account which that check doesn't seem to have, and you'd run into the issue that someone might be able to fraudulently cash the check if they were visible in the publicity photo, but yeah, could theoretically have the giant novelty check be the valid one as well if set up correctly. (Also, just noticed it was made out to "The Winner's" possessive rather than "Winners" plural, which bugs me)
Problem was that Hank was trying to, essentially, play against the Globetrotters seriously. He didn't quite get it was meant to be entertainment. Not serious.
I've seen the Globetrotters play a serious game, they lost to a College All-Star Team, I just happened to catch it on ESPN2 like 20 years ago.

Thanks for reminding me about the baseball cards in Big League Chew. I was never into collecting them but it does bring back memories of the weekends I would spend with my grandparents. I was a bit of a "tomboy" so my interests drifted from Saturday morning cartoons with Rainbow Brite to watching wrestling with Hulk Hogan with grandpa. Fun times.
Actually, anything (including a giant novelty check) that you write your account and routing number on, specify an amount, and sign is legally a check. You can use a piece of paper, a basketball, a rock... whatever. So, as long as the account info was on there, that check *was* able to be cashed.
You can bank an oversized cheque, a cheque is just direction to the teller where to put funds into, it can be written on a napkin and you can cash it as long as you can prove it's legit.
I forgot all about that “In the Ghetto” song because I was a small child when it came out. Thanks for that throwback.

what Hank did was Encourage the Washington Generals to actually beat The Harlem Globetrotters. (which they actually Accidently did a few times.)
It wasn't really supposed to be a Competitive Game and it Messed with Ace's Money so I can kind of understand why he's a little angry Then Hank decides to Ruin his Night. Id be pretty angry if that Happened to Me. But I don't get as much Attention as The Ace does.

I see quite a few people in the comments defending the Ace, but I think this is one of those situations where both sides are in the wrong. Hank messed up and then the Ace reacted poorly and made the situation worse. Neither side was right in how they handled things.

Funny thing about those large novelty checks, so long as it has the Routing number and is singed by the account holder, it’s legal tender.
Doesn’t matter that whether it’s intended to be cashed or not.
There’s an old joke in Banking that, as long as it’s properly filled out, you can cash a pig.
And one of the running jokes in King of the Hill is that, even for reasonable people, common sense eludes them.
Fun fact: Those giant novelty checks actually CAN be real and valid. Checks don't actually necessarily need to be your traditional check out of a check book. So long as they contain all of the necessary information and are endorsed, then they can be used. That's not to say that you won't face any difficulty, as a teller at a bank is likely not going to be prepared for something like that, and of course a bank may have certain policies in how they handle said situations, but you can even scribble all of the info on a brown paper napkin from a fast food place, sign it, and have it be valid.
Been working at a financial institution for nearly a decade in records, so I know a thing or two about this stuff.
That said, it's likely safe to assume, in most cases, that giant novelty checks are deliberately not made to be valid, for the sake of the convenience of both the recipient and the bank it could get taken to. Just because a giant check CAN be valid, doesn't necessarily mean that it IS valid.
I think the Ace is implying that he’s the guy on the packaging for the gum. Or the model for it.

This entire episode really annoyed me and it's not because of The Ace of Diamonds being an ass. he kinda was an ass but where he was trying to put on a show for charity and make everything fun, Hank was literally letting his ego (that he borrowed from peggy it seems) get the best of him. And he wasn't thinking that the Ace and his crew were more along the lines of rodeo clowns rather than actual baseball players (altho they are still baseball players too). Like Hank could've been like, "Okay so I'm fine with your team putting on that goofy act but can my team give you a bit of a challenge?" or something like that because I'm pretty sure, if Hank is okay with the football teams and middle school football teams dressing up like cheerleaders to make a fool of themselves in the name of good fun (and to boost morale for the school) then the real hank would've been equally fine with going along with the Aces little act as long as there was a little bit of a real baseball match thrown in there too.
I don't like episodes like this where Hank seems to be turning into a male Peggy. When we all know he will let even his favorite hobbies become something so light hearted and goofy (again the middle school and high school football teams dressing up as cheerleaders for the powder puff football games or the Propaniacs act) if it meant bringing money for a good cause.
Let’s not forget the episode that basically proves that all he wants Bobby to do is work at Strickland instead of having his own job. I hate parents who think their kids should have the job THEY have.
gum was also packaged in the hockey-puck style containers ala Skoal. I don't remember them ever being sports related, but it's fun to split hairs sometimes.

I think this episode highlights an issue I have with some episodes of KotH and other shows. The main character wrongs someone else, often a new character, but then said new character turns out to be a jerk, so then the main character is cleared of any blame in their actions.

Anything can be a valid check, so long as it has the proper information, account and routing numbers, and a valid signature.
You can scrawl all of that on a napkin and it's a valid check. Now, the bank may give you some guff; you might even need to talk to an official (and this whole process could take days or weeks), but nothing defines a check except for the information on it. And this is much more likely to work at small branch banks, where the people already know you, so I could see this working in Arlen.

That's actually not true. A giant check, as long as has a routing number and a bank account number is a valid check.
In fairness, Hank said it was a 239-game win streak, not that the Ace played 239 games over two decades and won every single one of them. I imagine they have to lose _some_ games, even on purpose, to keep a veneer of legitimacy. Besides that, even if he _does_ only play 12 games a year, it would be good for publicity because they'd be able to market it as a rare opportunity to see the Ace in action.

16:52 yep… Real checks have numbers printed in magnetic ink so the check can be read by a swiper. That’s also how an ATM can tell you if your check is legit or not. They have added more security features over the years but that is still there.

Hmm, maybe because when it comes to names for sports teams, other than things that can be memorable(or just things that can be easy to remember) I think it might also have something to do with trying to avoid confusion with the names, a joke from Bob's Burgers, was that when a bunch of kids teams choose the name dragons/thunders, they were differentiated by their uniform colors(blue dragons, gold dragons) like there was a team called brown thunder, otherwise I live in a state that only has a sports team called the seawolves because sourdough would have been esoteric,
