This episode gives perhaps the best example of why King of the Hill is my favourite animated comedy. Had Family Guy done this episode, most of it would just have been Peter exploring the rodeo, and the jokes would be what he did there, as well as some pop-culture references nobody will get in 10 years. Had South Park done it... oh boy would the scene with the goat be spicy. With King of the Hill on the other hand, most of it is just ordinary life, with the fun coming from how the characters react to it, as the caricatures they are.
The way Hank says "Fed" at 18:47 makes me think he was trying to see if Dale misheard another 3 letter F word, and that's so funny to me because that means we got so close to Hank Hill saying a slur.

@dab316TV I mean, yeah, I caught the joke and honestly think it's kind of funny. I'm more laughing at not only the delivery but how much time has kind of changed the nature of said joke. Also the fact that I never got the impression that Hank was really all that homophobic, just a more conservative Texan in the 90s (not contradictory he has been shown to learn from being ignorant), but this episode being released in the early 2000s that he might not even consider "fag" a slur especially if Bug said it first.
"Nancy does what she always does when Dale won't listen to her, and she goes to Hank for him to handle it." If nothing else Nancy has no problem admitting that Hank is more committed to his relationship with Dale than she is.
After this episode, I honestly thought Dale will never be convinced that Nancy cheated on him and Joseph isn't his biological son. I keep thinking that even if the entire neighborhood, including Nancy and John, told Dale the truth that he'd deny it or think everyone was kidnapped as well as replaced by aliens.
Dale is one of those characters that makes retcons to his history incredibly easy to do because you can jot down any sufficiently unexplored quip about his life to him either actively lying to avoid espionage, suffering brain damage from inhaling pesticide fumes, or being so out of touch with reality he was just misinterpreting something. The fact that they went out of their way to avoid those easy explanations while not rubbing against anything pre established not only adds depth to Bug, but makes Dale more grounded because it solidifies his actual problem; he DOES pay attention to what's in front of him and react accordingly... he just finds it hard to seek out or accept reasons he doesn't infer himself because he's grown so paranoid of people refusing to explain themselves that he's had to infer a _lot_ of things without anyone to confirm it to him. So when people just open up and explain things, he's been led to assume there's a code he has to crack. His train of thought has absolutely fine rails, but the junctions are so used to skipping stations that he has a lot more trouble stopping at them when they're available.
Maybe it's just me, but maybe the name Bug has an alternative double meaning... like.. Bug as in.. planting a bug on someone.. Dale thinking his dad is a government agent. Almost like.. Bug is a "bug" himself planted in Dale's situation/life? I'm too drunk for this

There might be some truth to that as when they went to the asylum the doctors there recommended that Dale continue to take the medicine they were handing out
It’s interesting to see characters retcon from how we first hear about them and/or see them, however briefly it may be. Luanne and Dale’s fathers are definitely two characters who aren’t how we first heard or saw them by the time they’re actually a major part of an episode, though Bug done is a lot better than Hoyt. Hoyt’s appearance was disappointing to say the least. Also Hank’s response to Bug asking he’s gay is the most Hank response imaginable when asked that question. Thank you for the video man, hope you’re doing well. Take care!
I really like your theory on Dale's business being named "Dale's Dead Bug" being a reference to the hatred he has over his father (who happens to be named "Bug"). Though I doubt Dale really wants him dead, I think it's more metaphorical in that Bug is "dead to Dale."

While Dale is an oddball and a coward, he does show that he cares about people and shows empathy in a weird way like in “Dale Be Not Proud”.
It was pretty sad seeing Bug fail to tell Dale at the store, since you could just tell how much he cared about Dale and him wanting to be very honest after.. they're whole lives. He really longed for a life with him 😔🥺 Was really well represented that way! Also I always misinterpreted his name as Bud, so, this is a whiplash lol!
Whenever I think of the episode quotes that they play at the end of King of the Hill's end credits, "Monkey Stye! OOH AHHH AHH AH!" is always the first one to enter my mind.
I like the Dale Knows Joseph isn't his kid and he just plays along as a way to stress Nancy and literally steal John Redcorns Son. He loves Joseph, for sure. But he knows he isn't his, and everyday he is his father, it kills Redcorn. Dale is savage. He is my spirit animal.
After seeing Bug in this episode. We can describe him as a kind man who despite his sexuality loves and cares for his son who worries about dale’s safety despite their estrangement and is enjoyed seeing hank after 20 years. Also tactic I think dales mother passed away prior to his and Nancy’s wedding as she wasn’t there when the wedding was happening
A retcon retroactively changes canon, which they did with Bug by making it so that he had been questioning his sexuality in the past. A good retcon is like that quote from Futurama "If you do it right, no one will think you did anything at all".
Bug was not retconned. He just came out of the closet. His prior behavior was just to sell the ruse (and Dale's mom was a beard) and the stress of repression is why Bug tended to be unpleasant in flashbacks particularly toward Dale whose very existence represents the lie Bug lived. If KOTH had come around a bit later, they could've tackled this way harder.
I don't really see this as a retcon. Other than the voice changing, it's really just development of a character more than retcon-ing one. And that's essentially no different than recasting a character. Which again, is also not a retcon.
I think that's a good thing. The video would've been way too short if you hadn't recapped so much of the story and just stuck to describing the nature of the retcon. This way it's like that old school feeling of talking to a friend at school lunch who liked a tv show and was describing it for you 😊 bit of an old timer here myself
2 things: 1. Where is Dale’s mom in all of this? I would really like to see an interaction between her and Bug. 2. Is Dale completely sterile? I’m guessing from using chemicals so many years of being an exterminator he would be unable to produce sperm and be unable to have any biological children with Nancy.
I think it speaks volumes for Bobby that he never actually has the conversation with Joseph about Redcorn being his dad. The closest he comes is when Joseph mentions the queen on his dad's van. I love how Nancy calls God, 'Sugar' 😂💚
Dale calling Hank, Bill and BH his special friends is such a sweet moment
"Have fun at your camp" I love how innocent Hank is.
Thanks for convincing me to finally watch this show.
I wish we saw Bug more. Also Bug are you gay? Hank no! I sell propane!!
Great vid. You absolutely hit all the notes in this episode, and this is definitely an amazing retcon. Pocket sand !!!
13:16 It still cracks me up when the start the giggling 🤣🤣

Evening, Squirrel Tactics. I just wanted to say, Congratulations on 10,000 subscribers!
Thank you, much appreciated
It was pretty sad seeing Bug fail to tell Dale at the store, since you could just tell how much he cared about Dale and him wanting to be very honest after.. they're whole lives. He really longed for a life with him 😔🥺 Was really well represented that way!
Also I always misinterpreted his name as Bud, so, this is a whiplash lol!
Wait a minute, I thought his name was *Buck* Gribble.
As in, like, an actual, feasible name.
Great video! Makes me really appreciate just how good a show King of the Hill was. Very ahead of it's time in a lot of ways.
Whenever I think of the episode quotes that they play at the end of King of the Hill's end credits, "Monkey Stye! OOH AHHH AHH AH!" is always the first one to enter my mind.
i never really knew i wanted a King Of The Hill focused channel, but man do i love it now that i have it.
This made me so nostalgic. SUCH a good episode.
You got me as a subscriber now I love these king of the hill videos
Glad you like em.
He's the only good dad of the 4 friends. Maybe Boomhauers dad is good. I don't know that one
I feel like Dale saying Stefano is just him getting Juans name wrong.
Maybe Stefano is Juan Pedro's rodeo clown name.
The title is a lie. A retcon by definition means it contradicts previous canon.
A retcon retroactively changes canon, which they did with Bug by making it so that he had been questioning his sexuality in the past. A good retcon is like that quote from Futurama "If you do it right, no one will think you did anything at all".
Havin' fun here Squirrel 🐿️😎✌🏻
Bug was not retconned. He just came out of the closet. His prior behavior was just to sell the ruse (and Dale's mom was a beard) and the stress of repression is why Bug tended to be unpleasant in flashbacks particularly toward Dale whose very existence represents the lie Bug lived. If KOTH had come around a bit later, they could've tackled this way harder.
I loved KOTH bumpers on Adult Swim
Dale being offended at the idea of his dad being a fed and not gay is the most based thing about him.
Just hit me that Dale named his business "Dale's Dead Bug's" and knowing him thinking Nancy cheated with his father that's no coincidence
Dale is the most quotable character from King of the Hill
Lol a channel dedicated to King of the Hill?? How did i not find this sooner, subbed!
You should do all they retconned in King of the Hill
@19:24
That's one video I'm definitely looking forward to.
Paella is also Camilo sesto's favorite food
Yeah we really don’t know much about dr boomhauer but the possibility of him being a decent guy aside but is def the best dad of the main guys
"Are you gay"
"Wahaat No I sell propane!"
I think the scene with Juan Pedro was a joke about Telenovelas.
I don't really see this as a retcon. Other than the voice changing, it's really just development of a character more than retcon-ing one. And that's essentially no different than recasting a character. Which again, is also not a retcon.
If Dale never knew about the affair, what did he think the re wedding was about
a lot of folks renew their vows after several years of marriage, especially in TV shows.
My parents and grandparents renewed their vows, it's not a strange thing
Thanks for describing the whole episode
I only talked about the parts having to do with Bug, I left out a lot of the episode.
His mom is never mentioned outside the birthday party appearance so nobody knows. And that is completely possible.
@@squirreltactics Dale says she's dead in another episode.
So it wasn't just hank.
