There's something otherworldly in Donald Fagen's voice - it's like a unique musical instrument, all of it's own. And the music of Steely Dan has a depth and beauty, unequalled I think, in the entire pop/rock pantheon.
Jamal_AKA_Jamal 65 yo geeza here... I've heard, watched & listened to this song since the begining... BUT to watch it with you again. It's a joy... thank YOU..!
The lead guitarist, Jeffrey Allen "Skunk" Baxter is known for his stints in the rock bands Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers during the 1970s and Spirit in the 1980s. More recently, he has worked as a defense consultant and chaired a Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense. How about that.
Fagen is such a card, I remember hearing an interview he did on NPR in the 90's, probably 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross, I don't remember, when they were discussing his (then) new album, 'Kamakiriad' and one cut in particular that had the lyrics 'She's a virus wearing pumps and pearls'.. the interviewer, who was a woman, asked Fagen .. 'those are some pretty misogynistic lyrics, don't you think?..' and without missing a beat, Fagen answered,.. 'Hey man, if you don't like it.. make your own album..' I almost had to pull over, I was laughing so hard.
Steely Dan had so many powerhouse musicians working in the studio. It seems like no matter who the drummer, lead guitar or piano/organ performer it seemed to magically meld together.
"They met while both were at Bard College..." Yeah, it's in Annandale. You could probably take a Wolverine Train up there. But he's never going back to his old school.
I am so glad that you did this song! I remember laying in bed at night with my tiny transistor radio (AM only) at the age of around twelve years old and hearing this song. It really made an impression on me.

Donald Fagen has a DVD entitled "Concepts for Jazz / Rock Piano" in which he goes over the creative process (piano cords, etc.) behind Steely Dan's and his solo record hits!!! Even if you don't know much about playing the piano, it's still a joy to watch and listen to him talk about the creative process!!!
Brother Jamel - thank you for opening up to the music that many of us grew up with. Several years ago while driving and listening to kJazz, this catchy mid 60's tune came on called "Song for My Father" by Horace Silver Quintet. I recognized the beginning piano intro...thinking out loud..ahhh this is where Becker & Fagen got that piano hook for "Rikki don't Lose that Number". This song will always remind me of my uncle's wedding in 1974, I was a flower girl, riding in the car with the maid of honor & bestman, my cousin Bruce -a groomsmen chauffeured us from the church to this beautiful hill top park for pictures...while a Steely Dan 8 track tape was playing 😊💖 Thank you Jamel for playing this song
You have to check out “Song For My Father” by jazz great Horace Silver, which “Rikki” directly references-the Dan were massively jazz-influenced, and it shows.
I don’t think that’s true-either that they sampled it (you can tell that by just listening to the two songs, or the fact that sampling wasn’t “a thing” in 1974), or that they claimed to. Happy to be proven wrong, though.
@@bobrouse8634 Sampling wasn't really around when this song was recorded. That, and they had access to the best studio musicians. That bass line is great, but so easy to replicate. Donald Fagan was quoted “There was never a conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver’s intro."
Whether Donald Fagan said there was no conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver's intro or not, it's absolutely what was done. The intros are exactly the same. This needn't take away from the Steely Dan song - it's one of my favorites - as artists have borrowed from each other, like, forever.
Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Dire Straits, Creedence Clearwater Revival and after that John Fogerty solo. Only a couple years' worth of reactions there!
