My first concert, Manfred Mann's Earth Band in Germany, 1979 in support of their Angel Station album. This song introduced me to the band, but their album Watch made me a diehard fan.
Hey Jamal - You'll know of these other Mannfred Mann classics: Manfred Mann - "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" and Manfred Mann - "Mighty Quinn" which was played in the 1989 Denzel Washington movie "The Mighty Quinn". Worth a look if you appreciate Denzel's acting.
I've always loved Manfred Mann. They were so DIFFERENT. Even in the 60s, they were a complete divergence from the usual British bands, with elements of jazz. The lyrics were always way out there. Thanks for playing this.
Yvonne Elliman is the first person I have a memory of hearing on the radio. I think it stuck with me at the age of 6 because of those incredible high notes and I had never heard anything like it before.
Manfred Man’s Earth Band started life as Manfred Man and the Manfreds in the beat boom of the 60s. They had a hit called 54321 which you may have heard. When they became the earth band their music improved immensely. In the early 80s I lived on the outskirts of London, England. At one of the local music pubs there was a regular Blues band that played at the weekends and drew a decent crowd, in the days before they were forced to charge an entrance fee to stage live music. Every so often one of the Earth Band’s guitarists, Steve Waller, would show up and transform this pub blues band (Hershey & The Twelve Bars) into some amazing act. He rounded the show off by introducing a bit of Jimi Hendrix’s instrumental from 3rd Stone From The Sun into the middle of the blues classic ‘Walking The Dog’ . It was fabulous. Sadly Steve’s no longer with us, but I’ll certainly never forget him. Thanks for reviewing this seldom played classic. It brought back a lot of happy memories from my 20s.
Saw Chris Thompson sing this live back in the early 80s when he was touring with his band as Chris Thompson and The Islands. Absolutely superb. Such a great rock vocalist.
Mike Smith Springsteen himself once said (jokingly) that the reason why this version was a hit and his wasn’t was due to ”douche” instead of ”deuce”. I think it was on VH1 Storytellers.
I recently discovered that they also covered Springsteen’s Spirit In The Night the same year. That might be another worth checking out. I recommend both versions.
@@donsylvester2372 They did almost a whole album of Springsteen covers and did them all better. Bruce gifted BBTL to them as he said it couldn't be bettered. So legend has it. A track written by an ex GF of one of the band, California, which they recorded because they loved it so much, is also beautiful. Gorgeous actually. Great band. I used to have The Roaring Silence on repeat back in the day. Happy daze.
@@DawnSuttonfabfour "Better" is an extremely subjective term. I, for one much prefer the original stripped-down versions. Not that I don't enjoy what Mann did, they just lost some of that edge with the multi-layered, slick production quality. Springsteen's originals conjure memories of sneaking through the fences to sit on the banks of the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, the city rising off to our right, listening to the traffic hum on the I-95 interchange bridges masked by the little transistor radio beside us and wishing that Christie Ward would let me do more than hold her hand. I'll take those original, street-level rock-n-roll versions any day of the year. ANY day. Of course, I admit that too is a subjective viewpoint.
one of my favorites! I was so young in 1976 but… POW! 💥 here came this song and it played for years all the time! Ahhhhhh….. Skating rinks and youth! ✨💖✨

Grew up in midnight special reruns because of mom and dad. Lord my dad loved to dance when he was young, we had a HUGE music station, looked like a dresser but the top raised up to show an 8track player, record player, tape deck, and a radio, with big speakers. I teethed on the side of it. When everything was good, early 80's when the economy was Banging and Dad had a kick ass job. We always had music, Dad listened to classical all the way up to early 80's music, mom loved Micheal Jackson, Weird Al, Dr. Hook, Wolf man jack.... There was a lot of dancing and singing in my earlier childhood.
One of the greatest transitions in rock and roll history. Genius on so many levels. How anyone could incorporate Chopsticks into a rock and roll song is mind-boggling.
Great song. I'll never understand why Dylan put such a weird version of the song on the album; he left a great version on the cutting room floor that didn't come out until years later, that's much better than any of the covers!
Dylan wrote a lot of great songs covered by other artists. The Mighty Quin by Manfred Mann. It Ain't Me Babe by the Turtles. Mr. Tambourine Man by the Byrds. All I Really Want to do by Cher.

Strange I've never thought of bands from Scotland northern Ireland England or Wales as exactly the same
Jamel, I feel you're coming into your own recently. So much of your true personality is coming out. LOVING it!!
Midnight Special was the show to watch while baby sitting back in the 70s! Never missed a show!
Love this man makes me laugh and boogie on a sat afternoon as a 65 year old yorkshire lass he is brilliant
Love the energy of this song especially the change ups and progressions. It takes you on a journey..
Please Buffalo Springfield is made for your review. "For What It's Worth".
Don't limit the Jamel! ANY Buffalo Springfield!
Whenever I hear it I can't help but see the Muppet version.
@@christopherconard2831 - my kids grew up (1990s) believing me that Kermit was the lead singer on Canned Heat's 'Goin' Up the Country'
I agree, Must hear "For What It's Worth"@@allanerickson5053
It has been sampled by rappers.
check out these 2 women underrated. Yvonne Elliman- "If I Can't Have You" and Nicolette Larson-"Lotta Love" .
Two of my VERY FAVES!
Totally agree. Both great songs.
Stompie Joe Don’t forget Charlie Dore and Pilot of the Airwaves
Yvonne Elliman is the first person I have a memory of hearing on the radio. I think it stuck with me at the age of 6 because of those incredible high notes and I had never heard anything like it before.
Love Yvonne. Wouldn’t some Jesus Christ Superstar be interesting?
A Sweet Anthem! My favorite line... "Momma always told me not to look into the light of the Sun... But Momma, that's where the fun is!!!!"
Saw Chris Thompson sing this live back in the early 80s when he was touring with his band as Chris Thompson and The Islands. Absolutely superb. Such a great rock vocalist.
This is a cover of Bruce Springsteen's song, and sounds so different!
and much much better
thank god.
I really enjoy Springsteen's version...
I prefer Bruce's original myself
I think it's The Boss's only number one song and he's not singing it!
I love the way that this live version has all of the best elements of the studio version but a great laidback intro
Thanks Jamel.... I haven't heard Manfred Mann in years. Enjoyed it...... Take care and be well. Hello to Mrs. Jamel. Peace.
Midnight Special is pure GOLD.. the live shows were incredible!!!
This was the first song on Springsteen's first album. Much different version. And it "deuce"
It's deuce in Springsteen's song; this singer clearly sings 'douche'.
@@jamesallen5591 get a better sound system so you can hear clearly Pal.
It may be deuce but the way he pronounces it, it comes out as douche.😂😂
The original is awful!
Mike Smith Springsteen himself once said (jokingly) that the reason why this version was a hit and his wasn’t was due to ”douche” instead of ”deuce”. I think it was on VH1 Storytellers.
If you want the "bell ringing" moment with Manfred Mann, just listen to DO WAH DIDDY.
There is absolutely NO WAY you haven't heard that one.
I recently discovered that they also covered Springsteen’s Spirit In The Night the same year. That might be another worth checking out. I recommend both versions.
"For You", another Springsteen tune that Manfred Mann totally re-arranged.
Happy daze.
@@DawnSuttonfabfour I had that one too. "Waiter, There's a Yell in My Ear."
A fave of mine since childhood.. Such excellent musicians, lead vocal 😍😍😍✌️❤️🌎
one of my favorites! I was so young in 1976 but…
POW! 💥 here came this song and it played for years all the time!
Ahhhhhh…..
Skating rinks and youth! ✨💖✨
'Can't You See' by The Marshall Tucker Band
I’ve done that one👍🏾
@@jamelakajamal -Damn. Then I'm ashamed to say I was unaware of that, but happy to know how I'll be spending my time in the next little while.
Great channel.
Spirits in the night would be a good choice next
You know I' old when I remember watching "The Midnight Special" on Friday nights and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on Saturday night.
Don Kirshner looked like my uncle! RIP both of them....
That makes you old? I should be an ancient fossil then! lol.Jamal, you done did it again!!!!
This video is 21 seconds in and I want to adopt you! You are a true example of what this country could be. Thank you.
Man this song was one of my favs back in the 70s growing up. Still good today.
Wow, I never imagined this song would work so well when played live.
Even better with the guitar lick!
Me and hubby used to think he was saying “wrapped up like a douche” !😂
Your not wrong 😂 I thought the same
I always sing it like that 😆
@@bobbymcbay1586 That's the proper way to sing it in a bar as a cover band. Even if you try to sing it correctly, everyone knows how it really goes.
I thought that until right now! I mean douches are wrapped up pretty tight...
"Revved up like a deuce" is fake news. The real lyrics are "wrapped up like a douche" 😂😋
One of the greatest transitions in rock and roll history. Genius on so many levels. How anyone could incorporate Chopsticks into a rock and roll song is mind-boggling.
This is too classic, never gets old! Like all of Elton John and Billy Joel songs! Get into it! We jammed in the 70’s
Spirits in the night.... Is also a killer song by them .
Damn good times back in them days..
By Bruce Springsteen, covered by them.
They did 3 covers of Springsteen Songs, This one, Spirit In The Night and For You. All killer renditions.
Also Springsteen.
Try "The Mighty Quinn" by them next. Bob Dylan wrote that song.
Great song. I'll never understand why Dylan put such a weird version of the song on the album; he left a great version on the cutting room floor that didn't come out until years later, that's much better than any of the covers!
Come on without, come on within, you'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
I love that song. Came out the year I was born.
Dylan wrote a lot of great songs covered by other artists. The Mighty Quin by Manfred Mann. It Ain't Me Babe by the Turtles. Mr. Tambourine Man by the Byrds. All I Really Want to do by Cher.
omg i love The mighty quinn.
Look up classic rock in the dictionary and this song and Billy Thorpe Children of the Sun show up, this is staple on classic rock radio.
Love Children of the Sun!!!
@@robind2727 I love it too.
This song is a staple on any play list I make. Children of the sun is good too.
Children Of The Sun back in the day on quadraphonics stereo
CHOM in Montreal used to play it all the time!!
Not afraid to know that this music ROCKED!
Yeah..👍👍👍....
Another great one!!..
That brings back memories of Jr.High..in P.E...if it rained we got to play records...this great song was always played. 💖💜 this band.
Now that I know he's saying "deuce" instead of "douche" it's soo freaking clear, lol!! It's a really great song!! Stay safe and God bless!! 💖
'revved up like..' car talk
Manfred Mann had their first hit in the 60's with ' Quinn The Eskimo '. They released another version on one of the " Manfred Mann'n Earth Band ' albums in the 70's .
"come on without, come on within"
Do Wah Diddy Diddy was their first big hit. Number one on UK and US charts.
Quinn The Eskimo is one of my favourite songs :)
Manfred Mann - I CAME FOR YOU. Written By Springsteen. You'll love it.
Underrated track for sure.
Soul Coughing will definitely "Ring Your Bell", : ) The Rhodes Piano riff at the top of the song is one of my favorites. Thanks for doing this video!

"I need a lover " john Mellencamp.. adding for review consideration. It has a wonderful build up.
One of my two favorite extended intros. The other being the live version of Sweet Jane by Lou Reed.
Ain't even done with the night...another great song by JM love it
Oh Absolutely.
The full name of the group is Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
When I was in high school, we had someone play a popular tune over the school intercom in the morning. The principal threw a fit when this was played because he misunderstood duece as douche.
I was a DJ on campus radio when in college and played the Fish Cheer from Woodstock during the lunch program. A few people objected.
Oh man! Lol I bet he did pretty good high school story thanks.
We ALL thought he said “douche”. Scandal!
Remember seeing Manfred Mann in Lewisham many many moons ago, with Paul Jones as lead singer. This song is superb.

Chris Slade, Great drummer!
And started out with Tom Jones.
"Do Wah Diddy" was one of the earlier hits. Paul Jones was one of the lead singers before this.
That was Manfred Mann and the Manfreds ... this was his later (and much better) band Manfred Mann's Earthband.
That was by "Manfred Man", technically a different band.
Gawd I loved that song when I was a little kid.
Saw these guys do this live in Wiesbaden, Germany in 79 or 80. Great show!!!
that part with tom hanks was the childs piano lesson classic, CHOPSTCKS!!

Jamel you’ve got to do “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry on your Soul Train Saturday’s.
Play that funky music right boy?
I've been thinking of that request 2...he never plays mine- Mayb he will play it 4 U!!* 🍀
Robyn Montgomery he did that one but it got blocked, check the pinned comment in his latest videos :)
krysti bush It’s “ White Boy. “ A black guy shouted that @ one of their appearances from the back of the room. So, he wrote a song about it ! 😂
Yes!!!
If you're going off in this direction then you should try "Hold Your Head Up High" by Argent
Yup, if he hasn't done that one already, it's a must. They had that in high rotation on the radio.
Absolutely! 👍👍
Yes, definitely, also, "Tragedy" by Argent
Was just called "Hold Your Head Up".
The bass riff is inescapable.
Wait a minute....wait a minute...wait a minute...pause.
