    Thank you so much Ann, I really really appreciate your time and effort to bring us all this honest opinion of the die cutting machines. Very very helpful and useful too. It’s nice to know all the ins and outs and down fulls of certain machines. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤❤

    Thank you Anne! I’ve got several machines too. My favorite to use now (I’m 71 and have joint problems) is my Big Shot Express, that is nearly 20 years old! I have the Gemini, which is ONLY used for dies too big for the Express I have a little tiny one from Stampin Up that’s really handy for cutting small dies when I only have a few to cut. Your information is very helpful.

    Thank you for this demonstration of the VEVOR die-cutting and embossing machine. I was in the process of making Christmas cards when my present machine stopped cutting effectively. This is an affordable option. After viewing your review, I went immediately to the website and ordered this machine. I am so happy to have found your review.

    I guess like so many other crafters who have been doing this for years, I have owned many machines. I started with a different company (not Sizzix) with my first several machines and they each broke. It took me a bit to give up on that company. But I finally bought a Big Shot and it really has lasted me forever. The only reason I bought a second one was to spoil myself, and have a machine for friends/family to use when crafting together. It doesn’t disappoint. But now after watching your video, I believe you have saved me from major disappointment buying the electric machine version. I was going to treat myself at Christmas, but opted to get a hot foil machine instead. Now I’m so glad I watched your video because I will probably get the fold -a-way next time. You have me looking forward to it now. I really didn’t know I needed it. 😊 Right now I’m on a self imposed craft purchasing diet. As someone else mentioned I have enough stuff for two lifetimes of crafting! Only buying necessities in the coming months (adhesive). But I may get it as my birthday gift to me in the summer. Thank you for your honest evaluations!

    Ann I'm so thankful that you did this fantastic review. I'm a semi-new crafter and just wanted a machine to cut a few things so I ended up getting a cheap mini machine and it was terrible. It only cut shapes and it couldn't even do some words. Anyways I sent it back and bought the Sizzix Foldaway. All I wanted was to see a real crafter review different machines and this was just what I needed and I know I will love it! Thanks again!!! 😁

    Hi Ann, thank you for doing these reviews. I don't have a precision plate, but sometimes have to put dies through a couple of times or even add some paper shims where needed
    I've just had a count up & realise that I have 6 different machines in the house at present. My original was the 1st Turquoise Big Shot & that was the only one I had for many years until it died on me, even my Son in Law couldn't fix it. Then a few years ago I ended up with the Original Red heavy based hand cracked Sizxix but passed that on to a friend who still used them. In the same bundle of Craft items was also a Black & Pink Big Shot, the Raspberry Grand Calibre, & the Craft Bag on wheels, which is what I actually wanted (it also came with whatever they could put in it)
    I now have my Big Shot in my bedroom (for when I'm stuck in bed). I have a Gemini Original electric machine, which is still in the box as I can't get into my craft room yet. A Gemini Mini (not sure about the folder system but is ideal for tiny dies) I also have the electric Couture Creation Go Press & Emboss along with the Go Press & Foil machines (New) Both in the to sell pile as I've now got the Gemini Foil machine which seems to me to be easier to use & time, (& it was a ridiculous price for both 😂) I'm still trying to persuade my Youngest Daughter to re home it, but she's looking towards getting a Cricut as she could do more towards the fundraising for her partner's Cricket & Darts teams he's in. I also have a mini machine from Aldi that I take to my local craft group for them to use when I do a session on card making, It might have just been cheap, but it seems to be a robust little machine.
    So sorry I've waffled on 🥴 xx

    Thank you, it really helps to watch a comparison with so many machines! I actually have a cheap brandless one, which does the job. If it ever packs it in I will go for the big shot foldaway as I prefer manual ones.

    Amazing, you have 70 comments & everyone has a different opinion. I think the problem is with all the machines. Sometimes you get a bit of a lemon, not a full lemon that you would return but, the machine is off somewhere. I have a few dies like that & stamps that are flawed, but after trying everything thinking I’m doing something wrong, I discover its the product, not me. I think for 2023 I’m just not going buy things I can’t return. Great video, great comments. Thank you.

      I can relate, I make sure to test my dies, punches and stamps right when I get them. I learned this lesson after I used a die from a nestibility set that I got maybe a decade ago and is no longer made by Spellbinders and found that it had a manufacturing defect.
      Since I started checking my purchases, I've caught a few defective products and gotten replacements during the return/warranty period.

    Very informative and appreciated review Ann. Over the years, I have purchased quite a few machines and have always gone back to my Big Shot. However, the warping (as with many people), drives me crazy. And even with the chrome precision plate, there are still times when the dies do not completely cut. After seeing your video, I will try my luck with the FoldAway and see how that works. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience.

    I have the Gemini and I love it because I don't need to crank the die out. I also emboss using the 2 clear plates and the Embossing folder and it works just fine. I have never tried 3D Embossing tho and can't speak to that. Thx for your videos Ann.

  • @suetownsend1932
    @suetownsend1932 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for the review, Ann. My Big Shot is starting to wear, so it does not cut as well as it did when it was new, maybe 6 years ago. I also have a Spellbinders Platinum machine, which I like, but it has one big flaw that I did not realize until it was too late. If you don't get the plates to align as you crank, the machine will actually break on the sides as the slightly crooked plates go through. With the newer separate plates system for both machines, crafters have to be careful not to get the thinner plates askew as they go through the machines since the pressure will mash the sides of the plates, rendering them still usable, but very ugly!! I also have a full-sized Gemini which I purchased when I broke my shoulder. It's been a disappointment, since the plates warp so very easily. However, it is nice to have an electric machine because there is no hand cranking involved. Regarding cleaning the plates, I find that for me, using my equipment, my dishwasher does a nice job of cleaning all the dirty bits from the die impressions. Thanks for all of your handy comments, especially about the Sizzix Fold-Away and the Switch. 😊

    i started with a Cuttlebug. then a Cut N Boss and then a Joy Travaille, i've had a Gemini machine for years and am more than happy with it. Also the Gemini Junior was the only one in your demonstration that cut the die first time.

    • @MegaMiaow
      @MegaMiaow ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the cutting power of Gemini Junior is the best as I've seen many other demonstrators say that it cuts in one pass. However, I think it doesn't make her top because it can't take the embossing folders so is not the perfect machine with full utility.

    I love my Anna Griffin Empress electric die cutting machine. Since I have arthritis it is awesome and it cuts fantastic. I just sold my Big Shot Plus because it was so heavy and it was huge. I have large plates for A4 paper that fits the Empress machine. I haven't tried the 3D folders in it, but if they don't work, I still have my regular Big Shot. Thanks for this great review! It's always helpful to know others honest opinions and experiences. Sorry for this long comment, but here's some of my experiences with die cutting machines if anyone might be interested.
    My very first die cutting machine was the Sizzix Sidekick. But it could only cut small dies. I then got a Sizzix Vagabond that lasted for about 6 years until something broke in the motor and it wouldn't pull the sandwich through. I think I tried to put too many thick things through that ceased up the motor...that I was then, after about 5 min able to back the sandwich out, but over time, I think that weakened the mechanics or motor. But it was a great machine and built very well. Then I got the WRMK Evolution that had an adjustable pressure knob. That was kind of helpful, but sometimes not and the instructions that came with it were limited. WRMK discontinued that one and have a new one they brought out a few years ago, I think...can't recall the model name now. So I then decided to get a basic Big Shot and it cuts most everything I need virtually flawlessly. But yes, the warping plates are a pain.But I've also seen a popular method of putting them in very hot water to straighten them back out when the warping gets really bad. People say it works great, but I haven't tried it yet. I have thought I would get a Sizzix Switch bc it would be easier on my hands and wrist, but I don't even do so much die cutting anymore, so I think I'm just gonna stick with what I have for now. One way or another I will likely stick with Sizzix as I think they're the most well-built, consistent and reliable in their die cutting machines in spite of some things I'm not crazy about. 👍😊

    Very interesting. I love your reviews, Ann! So informative, down to earth and no nonsense! I am still using my old Cuttlebug which I bought - it must have been in the early 2000s!! - not long after we moved to our old house and the craft shop was still open in town. It's very small and compact, and like the Foldaway, the sides fold up. When you fold them down, they make the suction pad underneath stick to the surface. My die cutting plates are seriously warped but they seem to work OK still - they just look awful! I don't know if you can still get supplies for this machine because I don't think they make it any longer. Thank you for your tip for cleaning and un-warping plates - must try this. The Cuttlebug has been a faithful friend! If it gives up the ghost I shall probably replace it with the Foldaway - it looks like the closest thing, and your review is very helpful.
    I also have a ToDo machine which someone gave me a couple of years ago - this is a monster of a machine and massive. It has a heating element so you can use foiling dies. You can vary the pressure with a dial, which is handy. It will take big dies that won't go through the Cuttlebug. The main problem with it is its size and weight. I don't use it very often at all, especially now that I've got a laser printer and find that much more versatile for foiling with the laminator, and not being restricted to the foiling dies. I shall probably only use the ToDo if I want to use extra large dies but at the moment I don't have any!

    Hi Ann. Thanks for this really helpful video. I've got the hobbycraft A5 and had to get the big shot as I could never get the hobbycraft plates. I still use it with a self healing cutting mat as a top plate and it's working fine on certain dies. My big shot is fine for my needs but I'm not happy with the precision plate now. I bought the Gemini Jr and tape the plates per Jennifer McGuire. I also use clear vinyl in between the two cutting plates per Creations by Miss, and have found the warping to have effectively stopped. I also shim with acetate rather than paper, and find that I no longer replace plates, just vinyl and acetate. I use two plates with a 3 D folder and have no issues. TFS.

    Hi Ann, thank you for this honest review of your machines. I owned a Big Shot, than a Vagabond (which gave out on me after six months), than a Craftwell ebosser for a very long time. I than pre-ordered the Big Shot Switch in 2020 and, thanks to the pandemic, had to wait for it for a year and a half. But I love, love, love this machine. It is unfortunate that you have this experience but I actually almost struggle with it having too much pressure. It cuts all of my intricate dies beautifully, some I let through twice, most are done with one run through. I do not need the chrome precision plate. What is also nice is the fact that I can use the platforms and plates from the original Big Shot (for smaller dies) and from the Big Shot Plus. I have some really big dies where I need the Big Shot Plus platform and plates. I never intended to move it around so it is not an issue for me that it is heavier than other machines. I certainly do not intend to sway you to love the Switch but for others who, like me, appreciate your opinion, I just wanted to chime in that my experience with it is very different. Best from Germany.

    • @juttawp
      @juttawp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@longlivedemocracy756 Thank you for the feedback. I truly believe every machine is different and many of us give up too easily when the first tries do not work as expected. I have learned so much about pressure, shims and angles in the past few years. Tim Holtz had some eye opening advice about warping plates. Always put larger dies, and embossing folders for that matter, as much on an angle on the platform as possible. It does make a huge difference and helps with less warping. When pressure is not to your liking use cardstock as a shim in those areas that need more pressure. As mentioned all my intricate dies cut like butter without the precision plate. But maybe you would have to use it if your machine is different. Hope you find the one that works for you.

    The precision base plate is a game changer if you are having issues cutting dies, from memory it was not to pricey I got mine for £14:99 ! I chose to get the chrome one which doesn’t scratch, so it should always look new. Everything cuts so well with it but you can not use it with a big shot plus machine as apparently the pressure is different on the rollers. I hate to admit that I to have multiple die cutting machines but I do suggest before giving up on your big shot try the precision base plate as it solves problems 👍🏼😊! I am really enjoying the run through test of your machines as it is very helpful to see how they are handling to cut the die. I remember trying to hand finish my dies over & over again but it very quickly gets old as it takes ages & they are often only partially cut but when you can cut dies easily & perfectly it is such a relief & just more fun 😁. Thanks 👍🏼

    This has been really informative. I have had my Big Shot for years and have been happy with it. I have to agree with you regarding the price of certain things and then they expect you to buy extras to be able to cut certain things. That is obviously deliberate to have us spend more on their products. It is a red flag to me straight away, I hate greed. The Big Shot seems to have doubled in price since I got mine about 4 years ago, it's shocking. 😲Until watching this, it never occurred to me to blame the machine for not cutting something properly, I always blame the die LOL. Thanks for doing this it's been great and maybe one day, I will get a foldaway 😊

    The Gemini always cuts perfectly every time. The plastic plates are a problem. I went to a glass shop and had them cut 4 pieces of lucite to the correct size. Much cheaper at about $6.00 CDN per plate. I also don’t use the Gemini sandwich as I think that is too tight and contributes to warping. I use three clear plates to cut and it works every time.
    I have the Spellbinders Platinum six also. It is also a solid machine. Better for embossing than the Gemini.

    So glad to hear your evaluation! I was leaning toward buying the Sizzix big shot switch thinking of the future since I am 73 but my fear actually was that an electric machine might not have enough pressure! You just saved me from grief! Thank you so very much because it is a lot of money! I think I would rather save up some to be cut and let my son do it if I get to that stage! Right now I have the regular big shot and it’s not a problem but I think it would be nice to have a 9 inch opening. I have to watch the rest of your video to see if you have something else to recommend!! Thank you!

    I watched this with interest. I bought my Platinum 6 when it first came out and I quickly discovered you have to place your plates very carefully else they won’t go through and yours seemed to be placed slightly to one side which may have been why you had the sort of trouble I had when I first used mine (and still sometimes do if I am not careful). I recently put a 3D embossing folder through the platinum with the blue plate with no problems but had to ensure the plates were very centrally spaced. I replaced my much loved Cut'n'Boss recently with a Big Shot Plus having discarded the idea of a Switch having read some negative reviews akin to yours. I found that intricate dies had to go through a few times. I read that I wouldn’t need the precision base plate yet as my machine was new but I am not so sure about that. The advantage of the plus machine is the ability to easily turn plates ninety degrees (assuming the use of the smaller plates which I have now bought) so this might help me …….time will tell.
    I have only just found your channel and have subscribed as I have found some very useful ideas and so expect to find more. Many thanks for the work you do. Now to go back through all the older videos.

    Well I still use my trusty little pink Cuttlebug and never had any issues with it. Still love it but I may have to check out this foldaway…..perhaps I’ll like it better.🙂 I also have the Spellbinders Platinum that I use mostly for my big dies and absolutely love it. Never had any problems with it. I have a Big Shot that I rarely use and pretty much a pretty decor in my craft room….lol. I had a mini electric Anna Griffin die cutting machine that I really liked but was too small and gave away to a friend. I’ve been very interested in the Electric Gemini cutting machine but was concerned because I heard from several people it had too much pressure and also hard to get the plates figured out so I’ve been holding out on it but you have me seriously considering it again. I was seriously leaning toward the Switch but changed my mind….so glad I saw you video! Thank you so much for sharing your review! It helped me a lot🙂

I'm in the process of buying a new machine (because I bought a pig in a poke, thinking I was saving money - I wasn't) and really didn't know what to go for. I really appreciate that you used the same die throughout. I was really keen on the big shot switch, but was worried about how good it was with one run through. After watching your video, I'm definitely going to go with a manual rather than an electric. I love the foldaway as I'm short of space - hopefully it's getting delivered today.

    I have the big shot (old blue one before we had many choices) and the Gemini A4. Just a suggestion for anyone else with the Gemini A4, I use the junior plates (put in sideways) and they do not warp nearly as much as the big ones, I only have a few A4 dies so most of my collection fit A5 plates. The only reason I have the electric is arthritis. I really wish I had waited for the switch as I love my big shot and the steel rule dies to go with it.

    Big shot pro for me. A lot of money but the best I’ve ever had. I’ve had all the ones reviewed, the Fisk are fuse etc etc..they all broke and warped plates. I’m absolutely delighted with mine. Yes it’s big, yes it’s heavy but I have a designated place in my craft room and don’t have to move it. Unlike all the others the plates are fantastic and not warping after over a year of daily use. As you say, it’s personal preference.

    Happy New Year Ann! I'm still using my Cuttlebug that I bought 12 years ago. 🤣 Back then, they cost $40 USD and I have had no problems with it. I can use Bigz dies and wafer dies and embossing folders are no problem. But they discontinued making them several years ago. I thought I'd better have a backup for when my Cuttlebug kicks the bucket, so bought a regular Big Shot two years ago on sale for $89 USD. Craft prices had definitely gone up since my first purchase. 😊 The Big Shot is still sitting in the box waiting for the demise of the Cuttlebug, so I can't really justify buying another machine. But I have heard great reviews about both the Foldaway and the Platinum 6 and really prefer the smaller footprint. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. This was a very thorough review! Thank you for taking time to compare all of these! Janet ❤

    Thank you for your honest reviews. I have a Gemini (the bigger one) and love it! I’ve been using it for about 5 yrs now. It cuts perfectly every time. I find I can run certain embossing folders through perfectly but not all, it depends on how thick they are. If I have a very intricate die I sometimes put in the metal plate and it does it to perfection. For me I tried my friend’s Sizzix foldaway (I think it’s that one!) but I struggled to turn the handle with my bad thumb joints so it wasn’t easy to use which is why I went for the Gemini. I do get warping plates even though I do turn them but they still cut well. I would like to get a little machine for when I only want to cut small dies rather than using my big Gemini but wonder if the mini is good enough?

    Thank you, Ann, for a really good review and comparison. The Sizzix Big Shot Foldaway looks really good and if I'd known about it when I was getting into paper crafting, I'd probably have bought one. I think what I'll be buying if I can ever get another one is a larger machine so I can cut the bigger dies I have. Most of mine, however, are fine in what I have.
    When I began to make cards 3 years ago, I could afford to buy one die cutting machine... and I chose the Gemini Jr. because I have absolutely no strength left in my hands or arms. I like it, although it doesn't fit some of my big dies and I've never tried to put a 3D folder through it so have no idea about that. The biggest trouble with the Gemini Jr. is the cutting plates. They're too lightweight and the machine cuts with a lot of pressure. I've never had mine fail on cutting any die first time through, no matter how intricate. But I can't afford to constantly be replacing those plates. So I use a Spellbinders Grand Calibur Junior Base Plate (the 'A plate') as my bottom plate and have eliminated the warping.

    Okej then 😂I have an old green Cuttlebug and it´s my 2nd one. I love this machine. Just as you, I like to be able to fold it away. That´s why I didn´t buy a Sizzix Big shot, in the first place. I have a Spellbinders Grand Calibur A4, for bigger dies. When I have intricate dies I turn them up side down and have the cutting side up and that usually helps to get it cut through perfect. I always turn my plates around and use the hole area to cut on and that helps warping. Thank you so much for a good review of different machines. 😄

    This was very interesting. I was thinking I might have to go onto an electronic machine. I have a Go-Cut-and Embooss. It’s not a fold away. I am very pleased with it. But sometimes it doesn’t always cut completely, sometimes I have to add extra card , on top of the card I want cut, to get the die to cut. I can put my 3D folders through. I do love the 3D dies. It does emboss well. So over all I think the machine I have is good for me. I live in South Australia. Thank you for showing us the other machines.

    Hi Ann, I have a big shot plus & also hate the severe warping of the plates. There is a very useful video about dealing with plate warping which covers the Gemini Junior too by Jennifer Maguire Ink this is interesting & worthwhile ❤

    • @prva9347
      @prva9347 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have a Big Shot Plus. if you routinely rotate your plates (upper and lower) (I do die-cutting most days) then you can make them last a long time (many many months). That way I've NEVER ended up with a severely warped plate.
      I've seen Jennifer Maguire Ink's youtube video; she recommends weighing them down in just-boiled water, and storing them with weights on top, but I've never had to do either, as regular routine rotating works for me.
      Rotating for me means turning a plate horizontally after approx. 2 or 3 cuttings, and also turning a plate over and likewise also horizontally turning it. I keep one plate (say, Plate A) as the one below the cardstock that's below the die's cutters, and keep the other one (say, Plate B) between the back of the die and the Big Shot, making sure not to interchange them. Then, when Plate A becomes too marked/unsightly, I throw it away, and Plate B becomes Plate A; and a new plate becomes Plate B. As plates come supplied 2 to a pack you can make a pack last a long time.
      Plates look newer for longer also because, like Jennifer Maguire, I use a scrap sheet of paper or thin card between Plate A and the Big Shot Plus' platform. That scrap paper/card is what I use to make mock-ups of intricate cards or as scraps to use as an inkwell/paint palette/glue-well, so the scrap's not actually wasted.

I really don’t have a warping issue. I agree it should have come with the intricate plate for the price, but I already had one. I find my Gemini jr. does cut intricate dies very well, but those plates warp drastically. And the magnetic pad is worthless. I have the sizzix magnetic platform that works great in my switch.
