Thanks for this one. I did my first winter camping trip this month, and when I got to camp I was just overwhelmed by the cold. Picked a bad campsite, couldn’t get a good tent pitch, and just ended up going to bed. Your video and my own lessons learned has me ready to try again. I think my main lesson is to have a good campsite in mind to hike to. Winter is not a good time to be searching for decent sites at least when you are new to winter camping.
Depending on how snowy the woods are where you are hiking, winter backpacking is kinda like hammock camping during the 3 seasons whereby you can camp anywhere you and your snowshoes or skis can stomp down a level spot in the snow for a tent. Dig a little footwell by the front door and cook just outside the tent door(CAREFULLY). Make sure to put the stove on some of wide flotation or you’ll lose your Mac cheese in the snow! Or, heaven forbid, coffee😬! A lot of folks, like myself, like to keep it simple and small during winter camping. No diggin big snow kitchens or fires. Make dinner, eat, go for a night hike to warm the body and enjoy the stars then get your ass in that 20 below bag! Watch some netglix or read a book! See ya in the morning!

Totally agree from a Washingtonian here just getting into backpacking this year and enjoying both WA and BC. Most other channels are a bunch of car campers pretending to be ultralight backpackers. Good advice, especially on winter hydration. In cold weather it feels like hydration is not as necessary as summer but it is every bit as necessary. BTW, I prefer to use back country skis and skins but I do have a pair of MSR Lightning Ascent 'shoes that are good on steep, wooded terrain. At night I remove my 3 mm thick closed cell divers' socks and tehwet thin poly liners. The wet, stinky liners go in a ZipLoc freezer bag, as my feet dry I don new liners and heavy wool "sleep socks". 3 mm socks turned inside-out go in the foot of my mummy bag along with my SCARPA or SOREL boot liners. Warm liners in the AM are a MUST.
Always good videos. Your deadman guyout line tip is brilliant! Not only is it effective, but it reduces pack weight/bulk which is a key necessity for winter backpacking. Thanks for sharing.

Great tips. I had forgotten about letting the packed snow sit for 30 minutes to harden.
For inverted canister stoves, you usually start them upright until the preheat tube gets hot, then invert the canister (similar to priming a white gas stove). It’s usually helpful to use a wind screen / heat reflector too.

For my winter trips, (-15, -30C) I used Coleman gasoline in a Svea 123, and a Coleman 440C Multifuel.
Both worked fine; as the gasoline has more BTUs than canister fuel. Both lit in the cold no problem!

Best thing Ive done for my winter cooking has been to make a stand out of a license plate for my msr whisperlite. Seeing as how you cant buy the uco mightlite base anymore. Old license plate. Couple machine screws with nylon all round and shock cord made a perfect one.

Justin, I have been following you for a couple of months now and I love your winter content. We don't get much snow here in Connecticut. I have to head to the White Mountains to get good snow. I like the helpful advice you provide in your videos.

On these Winter trips, I heated my water in the Reliable bottle, and put it in the sleeping bag.
That way I had a warm bag, and in the morning, water for my coffee.
Also HAHAHA there is so much snow on that table!!! It's taller then you hahaha
Another amazing video Justin! You have the perfect balance of trip vlog/education style. I love watching all of the "mundane" things that go on around camp/along the hike. You always seem to answer so many questions I have, and ones that I didn't even know I had! One question I still have for you though, how do you efficiently dry your hiking clothes in winter? I shudder at the thought of having to put on damp/frozen clothes in the morning. Keep up the great work!
Hey Alex! The key for me is mostly use polyester clothing. With polyester only absorbing 0.4% of it's weight in water, it is at-worst a little damp. If I wear it a bit while doing my camp chores, most sweat evaporates off. I then will air the hiking clothes out a bit and then then fully dry. When I put them on in the morning, they are a bit cold, but heat up quickly since they aren't frozen.
@@JustinOutdoors Thanks Justin! I agree with polyester clothing, it's moisture management is second to none. I'll definitely use that idea of drying out your clothes by wearing them while setting up camp.

Nice tip with the string and the deadman anchor! I'll have to try that one. Another one I saw, but you didn't mention was the Reflectix sleeve you put your meal in while it rehydrates to stay warm. One thing I always carry and make up is a thermos of boiled water. You can have a hot chocolate drink on the trail or you can fill a cup half fill of hot water and add snow to cool it down, but give you more to drink. Awesome video! Cheers

The biggest reason for water in the snow melt pot is to not 'scorch' the snow on the bottom, giving the water a smoky taste. Such high heat essentially burns the ice crystals before it can melt. Fairly unpleasant flavor. Plenty of water in the pot solves that, creating a buffer from the heat to the snow/ice. 👌🏼👍🏼
Awesome video with a lot of tips and tricks. Beautiful camp site. I have one important tip, burry your water in the snow. It stays insulated and won't freeze. I think you mixed up your drinking water with your pee bottle... 😆 🤣 😂

Wow, I wish I had watch this before my overnight, snowshoeing trip I just did! Question: why do you carry an emergency bivvy when you have your tent with you? I usually carry one only on day hikes…
I did that trail earlier on this winter, I think that last section from arnica lake to the campground catches alot of people out, its a brutal snowshoe if you have to break trail, good on you for doing it with an overnight pack, it was hard enough with just a light day pack!
It gets much less traffic than I thought! Luckily I always leave myself buffers in the winter

Cool Tips
I am planning a trip to Mt. Baker this winter, I will not be traveling in a avalanche area. I have spent three months collecting gear to complete my journey. I will be alone and have struggled to keep the pack light weight as possible, however, I am at 50lbs, it's the best I can seem to manage weight wise for my pack after careful consideration for the weather/season. Trust me, I have high end practical gear, no individual items are excessively heavy in and of themselves, however, I'm still at 50 lbs! This does include 4L of water. What are your thoughts? I weigh 245lbs 6'4" in reasonable physical shape.

Beautiful trip! Have you ever considered hosting a guided trip? It would be super cool to get out and learn and experience all this in person! I have the gear but with COVID lockdowns in Ontario I haven’t been able to head out for winter camping this year! Whenever all this calms down I think it would be really cool 😎
Not at this point, haha. There are a lot of liability aspects with guiding and I'd probably want to get my guiding certs before doing so. Would definitely be cool to be able to teach in person though as I love to teach and share knowledge!
