The higher the HP or boost the quicker this will happen. A KLDE/ZE/G4 making maybe 250-300hp will take maybe 200-300 of these to cause failure, but in something like a Supra with 800-1000hp, one high rpm pure engine brake deceleration will wear an engine out to a point of noticeable bearing wear, full failure after maybe 3-5 of these instances. Papadakis Racing did an in depth explanation of this about 8-10 years ago during a teardown of one of his Supra builds. The engine did one run on the salt flats. Because you can’t just brake at 200+mph and have to let the car gradually slow down so you don’t lose control it’s unavoidable.
