This is how the 1992 Mazda MX-3 battled against the other econosport contenders

  • Econosport coupes were typically configured as front-wheel drive models that shared mechanical bits with their sedan counterparts.
    The design for the future Mazda econosport coupe was frozen in the late 80s and AZ-3 would be the official name for the car in its Japanese home market--- this car would also be marketed as the Eunos Presso/30x.
    The coupe would utilize a platform known as the EC platform-which shared much with the BG platform of the contemporary 323. So naturally, the upcoming coupe would be front-wheel drive.
    The MX-3 would be small in size, but not so small in engineering. The MX-3 would sport a tiny V6 engine, which would be one of the industry’s smallest.
    The small displacement V6 was developed to comply with Japanese government regulations concerning exterior dimensions and engine displacement.

    My MX3, affectionately called "the dinner roll" was THE BEST at getting through heavy snow. The higher torque at lower RPMs coupled with the FWD, I cannot tell you how many 4x4s and SUVs I saw stuck at the side of the road while me & dinner roll just cruised right past them. I really miss that car.

    If they had thrown in the lantis R 2.0 litre and LSD with slightly stiffer away bars, I’m sure this car would have dominated the market. It was purposely neutered so on paper it doesn’t sound as great but even the 1.8 motor with an exhaust has an amazingly frantic induction sound. Handling is surprisingly good and it achieved a .89 skid pad. With modern tires even in the 340 tread wear range, you could maintain close to 1G. Lift off the throttle and the rear rotates amazingly

    I had a 1993 Mazda MX3 with the v6. A really fun car to drive and though there were not many tuning/mod options for the car, I did have a custom short ram intake and catback exhaust, nology spark plug wires, and a so-called high performance distributor cap. I was young when I had it and my knowledge was lacking at the time so there were a few things I did that thinking back now, I realize they were very dumb. One, I cut the shifter thinking that’s all a short throw shifter was. However, the insanely expensive shifter knob was cool. I put 18” wheels on it, which were WAY too big for the platform and caused a few ride quality issues. Should’ve stuck with the wheels it came with. Mazdas take on the Porsche 944 phone dial wheel where perfect for the car and I should’ve stuck with those. Other than that, I did paint the emblems a few different colors during my ownership of it and messed around with vinyl on the tail lights to make them look like they had circled lights haha and gave the headlights eyebrows to achieve the look that so many hero wrangler owners are now going for. All and all the car was fun to drive and reliable. It was the first car I would put through some street racing and the little 1.8liter v6 would keep on ticking. Anyway great review and blast from the past.

    • @Nd4SpdSe
      @Nd4SpdSe 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There was enough tuning options, thanks to Probinator and DIY Autotune's PnP Megasquirt. Regardless, the 1.8L V6 didn't have much potential and was best to swap in a 2.5L. Even using the domestic engine, it still was amazing improvement that had great support thanks to the Probe community, including turbo kits, but also proved the transmission didn't like power over 350. If you had a 4cyl MX-3, the B6T ot BPT were swaps to go. There were a few turbo kits, even for the SOHC, but was short lived and hard to find not long after.

    I bought my MX3 almost 4 years ago... Ofcourse with 1.8l V6. Never ever heard of this car before but now it is amazing piece of japanese culture for me. It is agile, fast and 90´ vibe is insane. I installed custom exhaust. The V6 sound is amazing. On idle or high RPM when she spits flames. Now she is few inches from ground and I have plans with her. Here is it rare. I saw more Supras and Skylines even RX7s then MX3s..... I was on the Biggest car meet in our country. 3500 cars on an airfield and only 1 MX3 and it was mine. This car is more than 4 wheels and metal for me. It was and it is my dream car. I always wanted car from japan and made in japan so it was good surprice when I found she was made in japan

    I own an MX3 and I used to sell the Eunos 30x here in Australia back in the day. My company drive car was an MX3 V6 and I helped set up the Eunos dealership in South Australia. The 4cy was not marketed here. It was always a great car to drive and I had some memorable moments in that car, as I did in the MX5. I sold all the 30xs, a few 500s and ONE Millenia (Eunos 800) I NEVER sold an MX6 but I DID sell an FD RX7 (to a woman who I had to teach to drive a manual gearbox!) Sold a shit ton of 323s and 626s in my six years with Mazda.
    My MX3 has about 100,000 miles on it know and I'm about to swap in a 2.5 from the 626. (Better late than never)

    My uncle bought a brand new MX-3 and loved it for about 7 minutes until the dealer pulled his brand new MX-6 around from the back of the lot where it wasn't seen before. Needless to say it was a major dickpunch for my uncle having instantly fallen in love with that beautiful black MX-6 and its unique spoiler. He never enjoyed the MX-3 after that and traded it not long after for you guessed it an MX-6 black 1995 year model. One year newer than the 1994 MX-3 he had just bought only a few months prior. Another funny note worth mentioning is he was so proud of that loaded 95 model until wouldn't you know it in 96 they came out with the beautiful M-Edition model and danm near made him cry lol. Years later having always loved his car i saved and scraped and finally got one of my own when i was 17 back in 2000. Mine was only a 93 of course but same body style and so beautiful with the spoiler and sunroof. That car had magical powers. I was a ghost as far as females were concerned with the hooptie i drove prior to that but after buying that MX-6 I became Brad Pitt over night. It was awesome i couldn't fight em off with a stick and even met my wife with that car. She's always been way outa my league but almost 20 years now im hoping im in the clear that she wont figure it out 😂
