Hi Doc. Great content. I'm on keto 4months already. that's why they are promoting to add some vegies specially green leafy vegetables for the potassium and magnesium, and also adding sodium recommending himalayan salt in water to increase electrolyte. dietary fiber such as chia seeds. Also some are doing Intermittent Fasting and some even Extended Fasting to utilize those stored fats to be use as energy. Maybe that could help and even works to reduce body fats. Most of us knows that few weeks after starting keto diet those lose weights are water weight. I'm not in medical profession but that's what I've learned from keto doctors around. Like what others said all kinds of diet are effective when you do it the right way. Thank you for that informative content Doc. 👍

I don't think strictly keto is good for long term basis because it burns out fat too fast.. It's only corrective measure for insulin reset, as transitional diet to correct habits that caused frequent insulin release( bigger portions, frequent eating or snacking and late night binging). I benefitted on keto diet and I recommend it as measure, pero I'm not sticking to it just because all the whole while I'm mostly consuming plants +eggs (30yrs) . It's just there was a time I eat irrationally with 2x the portions, binge at night while late sleeping. I resorted to keto to correct the habit along high motivation with the info I got.

@@victorguani8799 I agree. Plus yung mga meta analysis that he was referring to were outdated.
I used to not believe on Keto/Low Carb diet too but I tried it myself after coming from a "balanced diet" na nagpalala lang lalo ng katawan ko. I even spoke to many doctors at nilagay ako sa kung ano anong gamot. I stopped taking medications and started low carb, and workouts. Now I'm feeling so much better.
People need to research more and not just listen to one doctor. Kasi lahat yan iba iba sinasabi.
One of the doctors I'd like to recommend is Dr. Paul Mason. But again, buksan ang isip natin at mag research and explore pa tayo.

Impact of a ketogenic diet on metabolic parameters in patients with obesity or overweight and with or without type 2 diabetes: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Yeo Jin Choi, Sang-Min Jeon, Sooyoung Shin
      Nutrients 12 (7), 2005, 2020
The aim of this meta-analysis was to explore the efficacy of a ketogenic diet in metabolic control in patients with overweight or obesity and with or without type 2 diabetes. Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials that enrolled patients with overweight or obesity on a ketogenic diet for metabolic control. Fourteen studies were included in meta-analysis. The effects of ketogenic diets on glycemic control were greater for diabetic patients relative to those of low-fat diets, indicated by lower glycated hemoglobin (SMD,− 0.62; p< 0.001) and homeostatic model assessment index (SMD,− 0.29; p= 0.02), while comparable effects were observed for nondiabetic patients. Ketogenic diets led to substantial weight reduction (SMD,− 0.46; p= 0.04) irrespective of patients’ diabetes status at baseline and improved lipid profiles in terms of lower triglyceride (SMD,− 0.45; p= 0.01) and greater high-density lipoprotein (SMD, 0.31; p= 0.005) for diabetic patients. Other risk markers showed no substantial between-group difference post intervention.
Our study findings confirmed that ketogenic diets were more effective in improving metabolic parameters associated with glycemic, weight, and lipid controls in patients with overweight or obesity, especially those with preexisting diabetes, as compared to low-fat diets. This effect may contribute to improvements in metabolic dysfunction-related morbidity and mortality in these patient populations

I very much agree with the good doctor when he mentions that people [most especially the clueless] consult with a medical professional.
TL:DR - Most people who go on any diet do not study the science behind it.
Most people who start on a Ketogenic diet do not consult with a Nutritionist who'd support them and that most do it trying to mimic their previous High-carb diet in their own implementation of a low-carb diet - they even have desserts.
It just shows how majority of people are clueless on where to look for the science behind health and nutrition but equally important is that most do not have interest in learning the aforementioned.
As what Dr. Greger cited, which was cited in this video as well, the 2005 study implicates increased Methylglyoxal, MG production to increased Ketone production of Acetoacetate by close to double the value (1.67 times). Now, there is no reason to move forward and try to disprove the said study if there weren't any flaws in it. In 2017, a research done in Denmark shows how in a low-carb diet that as Acetoacetate was produced the Methylglyoxal was buffered - binded - to the ketone and the reaction produced a harmless metabolite - 3-HDD. But even before that, researchers wouldn't be quick to agree with the 2005 study. Why are multi-year low-carbers, Carnivore dieters still living with a CAC score of 0 nor zero signs of inflammation and Insulin resistance plus have healed/put into remission their Autoimmune diseases?
      www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2451945617302702
MG has also been cited as having anticancer and hormetic effects. Context matters.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5600983/
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5565788/
On the Diabetes study cited, "Short-term low carbohydrate/high-fat diet intake increases
postprandial plasma glucose and glucagon-like peptide-1
levels during an oral glucose tolerance test in healthy men", the diet as stated in the Methods section is as follows:
      -Normal diet - 67%
carbohydrate, 22% fat and 11% protein
      -LC/HFD - 20% carbohydrate, 69% fat and 11% protein
Notice how the LC/HFD still has very high Carbohydrate percentage. In a Ketogenic diet, the maximum allowable Carbohydrate per day should not go past 20 grams (it can even be close to 0); this is a very small percentage. Different studies all mention Low-carb but each study has percentages of the Carbohydrate different. This is just one of the issues with studies against low-carb.
Researchers Nutall, MD, PhD and Gannon, PhD have noted in their published researched cited by ADA that Fat does not illicit Insulin rise, it is virtually zero. Carbohydrates have very high-glucose and Insulin spike responses. For a Non-diabetic individual, fats have a blunting effect on Insulin and Glucose.
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1959475/
One of the reasons why the American Diabetes Association added in low-carb in their dietary management guidelines starting 2019 is principally due to the research of Virta Health on a well-formulated Ketogenic diet.
      www.virtahealth.com/research#Papers
If people knew the background and history regarding US health and nutrition, they'd be pretty much amazed and in disbelief. ;)

      • Nutrition is highly politicized
      • Adventists are open that they are against meat
      • Lifestyle management is spearheaded by Adventist agenda
      • Everything about health went downhill with industrialization
Pinaka important is - tamad mag research mga tao on their own.
Kahit making an informed decision requires research on the side of the patient kasi you can't exactly hold the doctor/nutritionist liable. They're just following the law and current approved practice that has taken decades to show that processed food consumption and sweetened drinks has caused us all harm.
Remember, nung 1940s and 1950s, Doctors in the US were featured in Cigarette commercials and poster and they have a playbook to downplay the health concerns with processed food.
Vegan diet is incomplete. You need supplementation.

When i went to Taiwan for a vacation, i waa rushed to the ICU as soon as we got there. The diagnosis: KETOACIDOSIS. I was in the ICU for 3 days and went straight to the hospital here in Manila for another week.
All of the doctors both in Taiwan and Manila said the same thing to me ... that keto diet is NOT safe for diabetics.

I am in ketogenic diet with Intermittent fasting and lost 15 pounds. No longer taking diabetic meds. It should be healthy keto rather than bad keto. Many Filipinos are eating rice with very high glycemic index especially white rice, which is highly processed compared to our ancestors rice. How could you explain the fatty liver and rise of non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis? Many people got this because of high sugar which is present in almost all process foods including ketchup and sauces. Further, many filipino food is filled with monosodium glutamate which are carcinogenic. Also in oyster sauces and seasonings. Exercise, yes but our metabolism do slow down and must keep the high intensity workout at minimum. Please include more recent studies on healthy keto as benefits rather than its down side because there are many of those who gained benefits from heathy keto like myself.

    As for me,
Day 45 in LCIF (+ workout during Fasting, 14-16hr fasting), ndi ko binigla, nagkanin (red rice) parin ako but lesser to none,. 1st week I felt the keto flu, kc ndi ako nag research before trying the LCIF, nung may nararamdaman na ako like palpitation, constipation, dun lang ako nag research,. and I was surprised na ung palpitation ko pala was due to lack of electrolytes, malakas ako mag tubig, but even before LCIF low sodium na ako cuz of my HB,. kaya naubos ung electrolytes ko sa katawan i think,. kc after ko lagyan ng asin ung tubig ko, as in nwala ung palpitations ko.. tpos dun nmn sa constipation, not bloated, ndi din masakit tiyan ko,. ayaw ko lang tlga na ndi ako dumudumi ng regular,.
a coach said na normal lang daw constipation kc na absorb daw ng katawan ko ung food intakes ko kaya wlang mailabas as waste,. but ndi ako comfortable sa ganun,. kaya nagdagdag ako ng vegie foods, leafy foods.. after 1-2 days nwla constipation ko, a relief for me...
so I continued the LCIF,. hanggang napunta ako sa Keto unconsciously, kc ndi ako nagbibilang ng carbs, I just ate foods that are known to be a low carb or 0 carb and I eat 2 times a day, no snacking,. I think parang stressed lang ako kc nauubosan na ako ng idea on what to eat properly to maintain the LCIF.. may mga nararamdaman ako like parang GOUT feeling na wla nmn ako nun dati before LCIF,. bigla ako nagka hyperacidity feeling, na dati nmn wla ako problema sa digestion ko.. kaya parang natakot ako, slowly tinaasan ko ung carb intake ko via eating whole foods..
bottom line, madaming benefits parin nakuha ko while on LCIF,:
    1. bumaba BP ko from regular na 140+/100+ hanggang naging 117/92 nlng in less than 2 months,. mataas parin ung Diastolic ko but I'm positive na baba rin to as I continue the lifestyle change
    2. nawala ung athletes foot ko (left foot) , before LCIF, kahit anong pahid ko ng canesten bumabalik-balik tlga ung fungi sa paa ko, for several months pabalik-balik lang. but when I do LCIF, as in nawala nalang xa, ndi ko inexpect na LCIF lang pala katapat ng athletes foot ko.. :)
    3. weightloss, I achieved my Goal Weight from 56 down to 52 (maintaining stage nlng ako)
Foods I eat in 2 weeks:
Eggs, alugbati, (any leafy vegie), carrots, sitaw, pork, fish, beef, chicken, cabbage, tomatoes, garlic, ginger tea w/ lemon, onions, no sugar,
then I slowly increased my carb intake by eating Oatmeal, no sugar, banana, fruits, half/1 slice wheat bread.. half cup red rice.. parang I shifted to balanced diet instead, but with fasting parin and workout..
maganda ang LCIF if you do it right, I'm still happy sa result,. my mistake was I did not do my research before trying the diet.. but I learned my lesson, I'm still learning, but this time I'll stick to LCIF, but not the strict version, mahirap i maintain, I got discouraged nung maraming bawal kainin na whole foods nmn like fruits and some veggies, I got stressed..
kaya I'll just eat a balanced diet in moderation.. + workout and fasting

Doc just recently i was diagnosed as diabetic (type 2) with a score of 500 (fbs). they treated me here in UAE and released me when i reached around 230(fbs). Since then I was in total depression wherein I focused on trying to beat it, finding source of info till I met KETO. I did KETO for like 1 week with regular monitoring on my Glucose while also taking insulin (20shots/2xaday). I was frustrated with the results coz my Glucose didint went down, I always get a score of 250 to 260 (fbs). I told my Doctor regarding it and He discouraged me from KETO and iI shifted to Lowfat. I didnt monitor my Glucose up until 3 weeks. I went back to hospital for a checkup, in my surprise my Glucose was just 140(fbs). Low Fat Diet and Plant Based Food is really the game changer if you want to reverse your Diabetes.

Moderation is the key. I say eat whole foods and not processed. Stay away from sugar people. Intermittent fasting and low carbohydrates work. The big pharmaceutical company are the only one benefiting from all of these. Inflammation comes from GMO foods and oils such as canola, veg, corn, sunflower oil that is highly inflammatory.

    • @jaesonv
      @jaesonv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I very much agree with your take on whole food and inflammation from GMO food and RBD oils; cold-pressed oils might just be an exception but I'm not dependent on those in my diet.
Most of health and nutrition, information and recommendation come from the United States - the Philippines follow US guidelines or reflects it highly. The politics of health and nutrition has been at play even earlier than the 1950s apart from Ancel Keys' Sugar industry-backed Seven Country study. There has also been a large impact by religious groups on health and nutrition - their beliefs have extended beyond their groups to influencing US health and nutrition agencies.
Big Pharma is a bit tricky before but right now they're part of the problem. Big Food wasn't as bad as Big Pharma but they've been deceitful and their Marketing department rides the wave of heart-healthy and healthy food that aren't really metabolically healthy contributing to not just blood glucose rise but that of Insulin.

i truly agree. I stayed away from red meat ,sugar, and carbs (bad carbs). I am breastfeeding and maybe that contributed to my weight loss, eating right was the main factor talaga. • @kristinebalanon8465

Nothing wrong with GMO foods - it helped our modern agriculture. The oils you mentioned are perfectly fine. You subscribe to big pharma and inflammation SCARE (theyre scare tactics!). You know why they do it? So they can sell you EXPENSIVE non-gmo / organic stuff... which doesnt have much difference health wise.
