It’s horrible that kidnapping is a thing, especially on a large scale, but realize that sending in ransom money only bolsters their militia allowing them to do it over and over again. Plus, would you really send in a squad of 8 men to rescue two people? Chances are the kidnappers will likely shoot the hostages the moment they hear/see the assault team. However, worst of all, what if it put those countries at war together where potential thousands to millions of people could die over some hostages?
Yeah agreed. Some countries dont have policies against hostage situation so they wont pay the randsom money so the government or the family members hires a team
People need to understand that sending ransom money shows the assailants that they can basically roam free, kidnap at will and ask for money whenever they want. Not only that, it makes the government look weak, not only to its own People but also (and most importantly) to the hostage takers and foreign aid (allies). Some idealists do not seem to understand that the situation is complex and solving it is not straightforward. Answering a ransom demand is difficult because it is about sending the right message. 1 - You send in special forces. If it works, you are a savior. If not, the backlash is terrible: you risk losing your men, which would discredit the government and its future actions. Not only the citizens will blame you for the loss of their heroes, virtually no one will be happy about the outcome because you have to mourn brave guys who rescued nobodies (sorry for the expression but that's how most hostages are seen by their fellow citizens - people who were carefree and put themselves and others in danger and have less intrinsic "value"), but other countries and the terrorists will think that you do not know how to conduct a rescue mission and you will be less likely to repeat such an operation. In 2019, the mission that rescued a married couple and two other tourists (one Korean, one American) in Burkina Faso resulted in a bittersweet conclusion after two french marines were killed. There was an outrage in France, with many people attacking the two dudes who went there for their honeymoon, criticizing them for their thoughtlessness which ended up killing two of the country's finest soldiers. Even a minister outright criticized the two men for going to Burkina Faso shortly after they were sent back home. 2 - You do not respond at all and will inevitably lose the faith of your fellow citizens, making you unpopular and destroying your political mojo. It will probably not discourage some of your citizens to go to these dangerous countries, either for humanitarian reasons, for work or tourism. The hostage(s) will most probably die at the hands of the terrorists or because their health deteriorates. 3 - Negotiating is a middle ground that seems a bit stale. You still lose money, you possibly have to send them a prisoner, weapons in covert operations or withdraw troups from certain territories, losing geopolitical and economical strength. You get back your hostages but end up in a less favorable position.

@Rqa0 if someone gets shot in a school shooting, is it their fault for going to school?
@Rqa0 here’s a better one: A police officer gets into a gun fight with some criminals robbing a store, and gets shot. Would it be the officers fault for simply choosing to be a police officer?
@Rqa0 you have a valid point there. But also some journalism (when done correctly) can save lives as well. Maybe more indirectly than directly, of course. I do agree he could’ve been more cautious though.
The reactions are so callous, without people risking their lives to expose the truth the world wouldn't know half the things we do. We need journalists like this who-obviously try their best to not freaking die/get kidnapped-but know if they did they would have people on the outside who can help.

Well, the reason why there are pirate groups in Somali or generally terrorist groups as Boko Haram for example, as well as the political instability and many other problems, concerning African countries were directly caused by colonization. It has not always been that way..
