They DO want us to be ashamed of our children... because it separates the parental bond and creates division amongst the family, as well as deep harm to the child in the form of core beliefs about who they are.

No, not at all, at least not the cop, or the ones trying to defend it. They're too busy focusing on their oh so important image, they didn't even consider her a life, she was just an inconvenience because if she hadn't lived there then this might not have happened, and if it hadn't happened then their reputation wouldn't have been scathed, they don't understand that their tarnished reputation is of their own doing, because they are the only ones, other than the rapists themselves, who had any choice in the matter, and they *chose* to sweep it under the rug. If they even so much as saw her as a person, they would have chosen the correct thing to do.

I'm sure they do want it to be out of the media, they have been caught with their ignorance and selfishness hanging out. They dont want to heal, they want to continue doing what they do. I’m live only a few minutes away from this town and your right. This whole area has nothing anymore due to the steel mills closing and is now full of drugs. All Steubenville has left is their football program. I feel the reason the people acted like this is because it’s the only bright light they had left in that town. Now it’s all gone. It hurts me dearly to see that this happened in my area and it’s sickening. I’ve been told stories of how the police used to be back in the day. I’ve also been told stories about how if you were on that football team you’d get a free pass to do anything. Absolutely shameful

I live in a small town and luckily this hasnt happened before, but the point you had on people not listening is true.
Any non-locals get ignored and spat on by most of the locals, I remember in school any out-of-town kid would get bullied and no-one would do a thing. It was a horrible thing to witness and as someone who can't fight, I didn't try to stop it, I still regret not helping. But that pales in comparison to what these poor souls had to experience. I cannot fathom that horror and it makes me sick to think that people get away with it.
