I am a Mercedes tech and have a bit of advice for you. Next time completely remove the oil filter then drain the oil. The filter housing had a check valve and will retain old oil (about half a qt) unless the filter is removed.
Engineers who deliberately design products to be more difficult to repair and service should be forced at gunpoint to work as a mechanic for a couple of months.
You want a complex car swished into a compact body, it's going to be tough :) I guess some engineering has different goals, and that the odd position is better for performance or longevity
As a former MB Tech, we don't try to justify the price of an A service, we actually justify it by following the relevant maintenance sheet provided by Mercedes specific to your vehicle year and model based on your mileage. Quick tip: next time change the filter before draining the oil as the filter housing will hold up to 0.5 QT of oil as @Everyday Fleet Tech said in the comments below, if not you will create problems, this vehicles are very sensitive. I appreciate people like you who get us a lot of business in the dealership.
Hey, great video. I just love these older Benz's. I was an apprentice with Mercedes when this model was launched. A little tip/advice though.......You should remove the filter or at least unscrew the filter unit before dropping the oil. The filter housing holds around 500ml/ 1/2quart of oil in it. Likewise, when you refil you need to start the engine to refil the filter housing before measuring the level. This is why you only needed 8quarts instead of the 9 it should get.👍
I'm pretty sure the Benz techs use a vacuum pump fed down the tube/hole that would hold the dipstick. So it's even easier for them than what was shown. And Tavarish should be putting in the full amount of oil, not stopping just because 8 was close enough and didn't throw a code, which these cars will do for more things than an owner wants to think about. Especially the way he drives. Which is how I want to to drive.
Good video, but you left a few steps out. The oil cap was still on when the filter was taken out which causes the filter housing to retain a lot of oil that isn't drained. You should also change the filter first so that old oil drains into the oil pan and out of the car. The way you did it there was still about one quart of old oil left in the car. You also need to run the car before measuring the oil level as the filter housing needs to be filled.
removing the oil fill cap doesn't mater because the pcv valve and usually a crank case vacuum port making air able to get into the crank case through the intake manifold.
ok, this is no joke. my friend took his 2015 mercedes in to a shop he did business with. 100$ oil change. engine blows up shortly after. his insurance wont cover it. mercedes wont cover it. he pays mercedes 3k to find out why it blew up. not enough oil and wrong oil. had to go through the shops insurance to get paid out.
Jordan Truppner damnnnnn maybe that's why sometimes it pays off to go to the dealership 🤷🏽♂️. If you aren't doing it yourself, that peace of mind is worth it.
" his insurance wont cover it." And it should not cover it, its the shops insurance that did the oil change. Basic stuff happens every where and all the time all over the world. Its called making a mistake. Happens in dealers too.
It's sad when shops can't look up specs from a VIN, but it happens [to many companies]. Remind me... what the hell was ISO 9000 for again? MB spent all that money on certification costs/maintaining a paper trail and nobody uses it? Wtf. I notice small things, like the shop that put slip additive in my diff fluid after a change on one of my cars - I have an open differential that doesn't need it. Bad management is expensive all the way around.
Mercedes : A service -Oil Change -Filter Change -Fluid Top Off -Multi Point Inspection -Lubrication of Underhood Seals, Trunk Seals, and Door Seals -Lubrication of Door Locks Mercedes : B service - Same as above with a few additions not mentioned in this video - Brake Fluid Flush - Replacement of Cabin Filter - Replacement of pre-cabin filter "if vehicle model has it"
Something you may have not thought of: Changing the supercharger oil. They're two separate systems, and most people don't realize they need to change that oil. Other than that, great video!!
The oil change is actually even a bit easier than you describe. Merc dealers use a siphon to suck out the oil from the dip stick tube. You don't even need a lift. Just buy a mitivac on amazon. You can practically do the oil change without getting your hands dirty.
I love your videos and this is GREAT! I just got a 2007 3 series wagon and this will save me bundle. As a lady I kept getting ripped off by shops and ended up learning how to repair things as my only self defense against going broke. Looking forward to getting the war wagon back on the road. Thanks for the videos!
“A” service: Ah, we appreciate your business and since you are convinced coming to the dealership is a good idea. We shall now make fun of people like you in the break room. “B” service: Bend over.
Lol but if you have a new Benz and factory warranty you have to take it to MB otherwise if something happens your warranty will be voided...if you have an old car by all means do stuff yourself
The warranty and servicing means you get them as complementary over 3 or 5 or some 7 years. That is if you bought them New from the dealer. When that servicing warranty is over, buy your own engine oil and change it yourself or buy the engine oils and tell the Mechanic to use your oil not theirs
@@ConstantineJoseph No, you are wrong. At least in EU, the warranty is NOT voided (by law) when servicing the car in non-authorized garages. ""Motorists have a right to choose where they take their vehicle to be serviced and should not be subject to unfair miscommunication from other sources. If this issue unfortunately arises, the appropriate legal documentation can be downloaded from the link below. Under the EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation 461/2010, manufacturers have a duty to honour the vehicle’s warranty when it is serviced outside of the dealer network, and non-OE parts fitted onto a vehicle is an insufficient reason for the warranty to be declared invalid.."" yourcaryourchoice.co.uk/your-rights/
Difference is one company gets a huge discount and stable long lasting supply which benefits customers as they know what they are getting and Mercedes know what they are supplying. It's still good oil and is just a damn good business model, yes of course as is business logic, the cost is passed to the consumer, it's to be expected. One guys gets two free jugs because he mentioned how he uses it and it's good stuff... Hardly a hypocrite or sell out, why not. If I can save a$40-50 I will. It's still good oil and both the company and consumer benefit. Company gets a mention and consumer gets a break. That's also good business logic. Clueless clowns.
My friend lost 2 engines in Motul. Plus Motul left his inspection window dirty. We switched from Motul to Castol and his inspection window then cleaned up and the metal parts also cleaned up. This is the longest a motor has lasted with him. It is always best to do your on oil change if you know how.😊👍🏻
“Why Germany lost The War”. . . they designed engines that were even more difficult to service than the British. . . and if you’ve EVER worked on a British car. . .
Liam Byrne interesting because the British defeated them at the Battle of Britain before they stepped foot in Russia they also destroyed there navy without Russia and also defeated them in North Africa without Russia
MrTangolizard Britain didn’t beat the Germans, they needed the Americans help, that is why Churchill agreed to all the American military bases in the UK. Like always asking for help, even worse than the French. As for German technology, they had jet planes before anybody else, they had impressive rocket technology later used by the US for space rockets, even down to the Nazi engineers. Tanks were better, planes, guns. Even now the best cannon for tanks is German, made by Howitzer, just like in the Panzer tanks..
Hahahahahahaha! :) I buy 10 quarts of Mobile 1 0W-40 European car formula at Walmart for $54 bucks. Buy the $10 dollar filter and take the car down the street to do the change out for $26. Sometimes I do it myself with my vacuum pump. That said, I wish I would have bought a Camry. :)
This guy makes these videos to help people save money and educate car owners out of the kindness of his heart and to share his hobby. People like you sir, are why the dealership charges 320.00.
I use a mighty Vac that sucks the old oil out thru the dipstick tube, exactly the way the MBZ dealership does it, I don't spill a drop of oil and don't even get my hand dirty. Okay, changing the filter I might. But the only cost of an oil change, then, is the oil and filter. I wouldn't trust any MBZ dealership to change my oil. I barely would trust them to wash the car! They actually STOLE my floor mats, I had to complain and force them to replace them, which they did.
You can use a dip stick it's a service dipstick that you use in the tube that is capped off with a red cap. I would send a picture but I can not post one here. The tube is located at the back left of the engine bay about where the name plate and the word AMG is
The recommended Mobil 1 0W40 is a very very good oil. I can't recommend it enough. I've studied mechanical engineering (specialized in automotive technology) here in Germany and we've done a lot of test series with different engine oils. Some findings where so bad that the manufacturer sued the faculty to remove the data from public access and said we must've tested counterfeit products (which was not the case) In the case of Mobil 1 it's not just that they bought their way in with the car makers and the customer gets recommended a subpar product because of that. A good example of that scenario would be some Castrol products. That particular MOTUL you have is also a very good oil. I do all the work on our cars myself at a good friends car repair shop and he has 60litre barrels and only uses MOTUL products. I put this oil in my dads car since it was brand new. He drives a lot so I have to change every 2 months which equals around 12k km. That car has 700.000km and never had any issue with the engine. It even has the first turbocharger. MOTUL has some incredible ester based oils which are worth mentioning as well. What I can not recommend is 5W30 of any sort in combination with ridiculous 30-40.000km intervals. It's not the engineers that recommended these intervals it's more the management side. Like hey competitor ABC has a xy km interval, how much can we stretch it without it causing problems during warrantytime. It's a good selling point if you can say the car only needs half or a third of the services compared to a competitor and that's the only reason for the high intervals. I've seen countless problems with this combination. These engines get completely dirty and sludged inside causing a lot of problems...any experienced mechanic can attest to that...
hi friend, Which oil is better, Motul X-Cess 5w40 or Mobil 1ESP 5w30 for 2005 VW Jetta 1.6 petrol engine? Have you tested them? My car is 200k km. I have been using Motul X-Cess 5w40 for the last 4 changes. But, lifter voice started in the engine. So, I changed the lifters. During the change, we saw lots of oil sludge. The older owner had used Castrol Magnetec 10w40 during the first 120k km. Is it the reason of oil sludge? or motul causes it? what do you thing? Some mechanics say mobil 1 esp keeps engine cleaner than other oils. what is your opinion?
Is there any difference between a 40k km interval, and telling people "run it til it pukes"? I'm not about to trust anything in a gasoline motor past 20k, even if it is synthetic.
I buy whatever full synthetic oil is on sale and a good filter. The last oil change I did Quaker State Full Synthetic and a Purolator Pure One filter for only 24 dollars. Jiffy lube wants 58 dollars for a unknown filter and unknown bulk oil. Thanks buy no thanks, I will change it myself.
Not necessarily true. Some cost under $40K which is less than a lot of the Ford/GM/Toyota/etc SUVs you see on the road. If a car costs only 50% more, an equally affordable oil change would cost only 50% more.
Before removing the bottom bolts you must open the filter so you the oil and the residues will easily flow out within the old oil. I worked in Mercedes and that was mandatory. (Sorry for my English)
To properly check oil by MB- after you put your oil in showing 1/4 up the stick 1-Get car up to temp- shut car off 2- set a 13 min timer- when car is turned off 3- check dip stick after timer is up 4- add oil till half way on stick repeat step. (13min cool downs)
This is the routine I follow when changing the oil in my family's cars (MB, BMW, Mini, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda). Open the oil fill cap, take out the oil drain bolt, let it drain for 5-10 mins, crack open the oil filter (if you loosen it up too early oil will spill all over your engine and your driveway), let it drain for 30 mins while I grab a beer and smoke a cig. Then replace the oil filter, screw back the oil drain bolt, fill the correct amount of oil, idle the engine for a few minutes and recheck the oil level. So damn simple.
Tavarish, you are a really good guy but those who watch you do not need a refresher course on why you need oil in an engine. I used LiquiMolly last oil change on my 2001 e320 sport. Napa charged about 42 bucks for a 5 quart jug. Need 8 quarts. Mann filter cost about 8-10 bucks. Molybdenum is a low friction additive to the oil and Napa actually told me MB recomends it. It's also supposed to be 10k mile oil. I am adding this comment. I hope you see it. My car told me i needed a A service in 3 days and had no idea how to get rid of it. After listening to this video I went out and pulled that message up and hit the reset button and again to say yes to it and it went away. So thanks cause I don't have a manual and I'm not taking it to the dealer. Thsnks again.
I understand some get jealous, but tell me you wouldn't look at a Koenigsegg if you hit the lottery. The swede has given us... more cowbell, but on 4 wheels.
A topsider oil pump is a great DYI method for changing the oil. Since the oil filter is on top there is no reason to go under the car. "Yes." Top siders get 'all' of the oil out. I have used this method for 10 years on a BMW Z3 and for 3 years on a MB SL550. Zero oil related problems on either car. I've been told that this is the way most MB dealers do it.
Hahaha i dont trust mobile 1 because I think they paid MB for the recommendation ... so instead im gonna recommend you motul which paid me for the recommandation haha
I used to deliver oil for a living. Most of the other oils are the exact same at all of your local shops they just slapped a sticker on it when it comes to mobile one they do not play any games. If they're tank was contaminated the slightest bit we had to go back drain it and refill it. Mobil one is by far my favorite oil and that is all I want in my vehicles
@Jamal mac Don't do it, They really aren't worth the downtime and the crazy expensive maintenance costs. You are much better off renting one for special events.
If you did the oil change per the manual you would not even be under the car. You use a vacuum evaluator and ‘suck’ it out through the oil dip stick. Remove the oil filter when evacuating and continue till no more oil comes through the hose. Actually removes more oil than draining through the drain plug. That’s why when you buy the filter ‘kit’, it doesn’t include the drain plug seal washer.
I like the videos and ways we can save money on expensive maintenance items by DIY. Think this video needs an update or PART B to let people know you need to remove the oil filter prior to dropping the sump oil. I would also advise that you include the MB recommended torque settings to the two sump bolts as well to prevent under or over tightening!
I work at a local Mercedes repair shop, we're half of what the dealer charges for just about most things. We use direct aftermarket parts. Like the oil filters for most Mercedes are Mann Filters, we use those. Mercedes use the same ones, but with their logos on them. And we also use Motul oil, don't have an issue out of their brand, it works fantastic. And for an "A" Service, we charge $80. "B" Service, we charge $290. I'm 19 years old and I love my job and Mercedes. They're fun cars, but trust me, they can definitely be expensive. We do use direct OE parts from Mercedes on some jobs though. Depends on what the job is.
Anton Zuykov You are correct But most idiots driving a Mercedes are not rich. They usally have a ok job and can barely afford the payment and their mortgage. The real dumb ones dont even have a house.
Reality check: Actual cost from DEALER: $132.22 TOTAL (Labor .4hrs= $58.40 , MB Filter $16.50, 9 quarts of MB oil (Mobil1) @ 5.99ea = $53.91, Seals, $3.41) Not having oil spilled all over the tops of your underbelly pans in your carpeted engine compartment and having dirty oil because you didn't remove the filter first or read the service manual, and incorrect levels because you didn't check AFTER the engine was run, priceless? Well, maybe not, but because I pay almost as much for Mobil1 and a fleece filter from the local auto parts store, it's really sixty bucks going to the dealer- and since I'd have to jack the car, wait around for it to drain, possibly strip one of the plugs, and take the used oil to be disposed of, it ain't really that bad. Plus, I can sit around in the dealer's lounge for half an hour and gorge myself on their free bagels and coffee.
An oil shouldnt be that hard with all those problems you droned on about. you clearly don't know how to work on cars and are making a dramatic mountain out of a simple mole hill.
"A" service rip off. I take to Honda and they do all that from $40 with oil change. Do it yourself is cheaper. I used valvoline full synthetic and never had any problems. I prefer a Lexus over Mercedes.
A small tip as you do your own oil changes, submerge the filters in oil for a while to reduce the risk of sudden oil pressure arrival at the filter bursting it. Spin-on types with housings can be filled up and element types submerged in a clean container. Loving the DIY attitude!
Isn't pre filling a oil filter bad because the oil bypass the filter and go straight to the engine could be contaminated with small particles that can damage the engine.
1BMWdrvr1 I'd rather take a new fully loaded V6 Camry as the daily, those things are no joke lol! I do agree with what Ricky M. said, it's true to me as I'm that kind of guy "even though I own a 7 Series and a GS300 as my daily".
That truly was my breaking point to quit watching the video. I guess he doesn’t know that lubrication is a science. He seems very clueless but with a camera.
Motul shit oil!!!!!! In russia motul Cheapest oil actually and here in USA cost way more and ppl believ that this shit good🤣😂 best oil for m156 and all benz&bmw is liqui moly!! Or you can put mobile1 but not f..k motul😂 thats crazy what they saying about motul oil
I just changed the oil in my 2009 Mercedes ml320 bluetec diesel engine. It just cost me $85. $20 Oem oil filter, 2 gal 5w30 full synthetic oil and copper washer for the drain plug.. I bought the ml320 for $9000. Has 118,300 miles. It runs like it's brand new.. The interior looks brand new. Only the CD player is broken.
bb4jdmlude Damn some people just get butthurt over a video so easily. If u dont care for quality tools then you dont buy them. Having quality tools dont make you a good diy mechanic, having the skill and enough tools does.
Hey Guy I’m sorry this maybe a little late and maybe a little more helpful to for checking the engine oil level the most accurately there’s videos on it as well, you get in your sl55 turn the key to one click before accessory mode, leave it there , then scroll to the main page of your instrument cluster the one that shows your MPH/ temperature ambient, then then push the little reset button for the oil service interval about 3 times really fast like Tap,Tap,Tap! Your instrument cluster should go into an alternate menu screen it is at this point u turn your key to the accessory switch on position but don’t start the car, as you’ll see on this alternate menu you will see the vin number of your car the engine and chassis of your car as well as how many quarts exactly r in your engine as of the moment you pulled it up, that’s what I use and it is very accurate I must say, another way to explain this look up dyno mode for e class CLK class amg And it will explain how to get to the menu as welll. This video is pretty old and you seem to know a fair amount about cars so I just thought I would share that with u if it helps cool if not cuz u knew it’s all good
Sir, Thank you. I'm not an expensive car owner by any means,... I currently drive a 2003 Matrix in NYC. I was just browsing the Tube, came across your video. I'm just a car/motor/mechanic enthusiast. Any information on how to save money and not give it away as 'Recommendation" from a car company is excellent information. Thanks for the video, and I subscribed and thumbs uped your vid.
FYI, the Famous Ford 302 5.0 liter engine, which is the engine the 4.6 liter V8 replaced, had two drain plugs. By the way, the oil filter is referred to as a "canister" oil filter. Not being a snob (I actually drive a Camry, LOL).
Don't forget that after that $320 dollar oil change, you'll get a bill of health totaling over $1K for the recommended repairs and maintenance. I once was quoted over $800 for an oil pressure sensor seal replacement. The cost of parts was $3.
Tavarish my new favorite TH-camr. Hope more SL videos come soon. Question is there a cat back install coming for SL? Would sound so mean if it had one.
So you're down on MB for using Mobile 1(paid advertising) , but it's okay for youto accept free oil(paid advertising) from Motul, I see the difference.
Mercedes generally does not drain the oil with the crankcase plugs they evacuate the oil through the dipstick tube most newer Mercedes don’t even have crankcase drains anymore. And if you remove the plenum you should find a blocked off tube towards the rear of the left side fly head (left side if standing in front of the car looking at the engine) some engines also are evacuated thru a crankcase access plug center rear of the engine
4.5 qts. more ,but putting a filter dry, I 'd never do, showing everyone how to put a filter in DRY, is wrong.... Wet filter with oil then install (wet!) On starting your not running engine while your filter is filling with oil.
4711Express I did my oil on a "89 Vette, no ,"O" ring on filter,so I started it .I happen to look in the engine bay, oil spraying every where.Live/learn got my lesson.
The oil turns brown the moment it's been used just a bit, stop the bull shit with all this "hard driving" it's a car meant to be driven, the oil doesn't care
With 9 qts, I could do an oil change for about $35, including the filter. I use Walmart Supertech "full" synthetic. Good enough. I have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with about 100,000 miles more than your Mercedes. I use Ford Motorcraft filters (because they are the only ones you can get a socket for, and you cannot get a strap wrench on the filter in the stock location) and 6 qts. of Walmart Supertech 10w30 "full" synthetic. (Yes it calls for 5w20, but it has 250,000 miles of wear, meaning looser clearances, so the heavier oil works better) I have owned this car since 47,000 miles, I change the oil every 3,000 miles, and I expect to get well over 300,000 miles out of the engine. An oil change costs me $25, and takes about 15 minutes to do. Firestone wanted $77. That's enough for THREE oil changes. When the engine/transmission/other expensive parts wear out, I may just replace them, since they don't make large, comfortable, RWD, body on frame, V8 powered, solid rear axle cars like this anymore.
People saying Mercedes is over priced junk don’t own Mercedes they haven’t driven one daily and don’t know the difference. Keep driving your Honda’s and Toyota’s I personally don’t like to feel every bump and crack in the road when I drive. I also love to be able to think without loud tire noise.
@@SeanPGribbons Whatever floats your boat, as long as it is a conscious choice and not "keeping up with the joneses". To me having to bring a car for long and expensive services is a big distraction. Toytas, lexuses and some hondas are pretty smooth and sound proof enough to bother about a bumpy ride.
Add oil, run engine allow for the oil to get through the galleries and fill the filter turn the engine off allow for the level to settle then check your level Im a MB tech p. S good practice change the air filters when you drop the oil and filter
I don’t see the problem if someone wants to do their own servicing. I am very particular with my vehicles. Personally, I do my own services with an inspection, but I do buy the filters from the dealer for my records. My Porsche, Benz and Tacoma all have oe filters. I change out my own driveline oils, brakes, filters etc and write everything in my log book that each car has in the glove box. Once every two years I take the Porsche and the Benz in for an inspection just for peace of mind. Not once have they found anything broken or worn out because I’ve already tended to it if there was. I’m am constantly impressed with how well the German cars are built for the most part and the prices on parts aren’t nearly as bad as they’re made out to be. Also, for the record the Camry I just replaced cost me 4x as much as the Cayman to keep on the road. Price out a set of 4 struts and top hats from the dealership and tell me a Toyota is cheap. Granted it had a lot more miles but that doesn’t mean it won’t need to be maintained and will magically last forever. Now, full disclosure I am/was a mechanic for a few years in the the lighter duty side but I’ve now switched to heavy duty and work on multi million dollar cranes everyday. I still don’t think regular maintenance is out of the realm of possibilities for the average joe. Just be smart, do your research and follow a shop manual if you need, they’re available on the internet. If you’re the type who relies on the dealership to do everything for you, maybe a German car isn’t for you. But for the rest of us, there are some real bargains out there and you can get ALOT of car for the money.
I don't know how it is in America but in Germany part of the A service is a break test on a test bench, they also clean the water diverter, check all the light (external and internal), update the GPS map, ... and a lot of small things that you can do by yourself. But, if done correctly, it takes time and therefore cost money. And seeing the poor job you did, you'd better let a qualified mechanic do it for you...
I work for a Mercedes-Benz dealership in the US. You're correct...there is a lot more to a service A than was mentioned here. Many items are checked that are normally overlooked by third party shops. We are required to check and record on the service invoice: tire pressures (including spare if one is included), tread depth, brake pad thickness, check for oil leaks, brake fluid condition, shock absorber conditions, check all light bulbs, top off washer fluid tank, perform any available software updates including maps. Car is test driven to ensure all is functioning, washed then brought back up front to the customer. We do this for $250. Not necessarily cheap, but thorough.
@@kbatzler My local Toyota dealer does all that, including the wash and they bring the car around to me and open the door for me as I get in then they wave me goodbye. They do this even though I buy their coupon special which gives me a third service for free (if I pay for them three at a time). (They also check my tires, set the tire pressure, check for any recalls and in my hybrid they test my auxiliary battery, all for their reasonable oil change price.) All that costs a fraction of the Mercedes price, even when I factor in the cost of the extra oil capacity my the Mercedes (I'm a former Mercedes owner and my family had owned Mercedes going back to the 1960s, we now all own Toyotas, seriously.)
Well, we are not in Germany and that why we got rob for not having full service done here for same price. They don't test s#1t here... And map update is gonna cost us an extra $300.
The service performed in Germany is absolutely no different from the US. The intervals are the same and a service A, B, C, or D is exactly the same thing. As for the map updates, you just need to keep your eye on occasional mailers or email with promotions for free map updates that generally last three months. If your car is less than 3 years old the map updates are free anyways. I know how we perform our services at our dealership, your experience may vary depending on one nearby you. No guarantee it's going to be the same just like with any brand.
My car was almost brand new when I get it and a year later I've asked for map update and automatically they told me "money money money", LOL. I just stick with Google anyway.
I am a mechanic and not a tech. As you mentioned you were doing a DIY oil change. Pretty good job and yes, someone told me many years ago, filter first. Btw, I like your shop concept something I have thought of a long time ago maybe one day. All the best
civiere I’m just asking to be curious. I run nothing but Castrol 10w60. I’ve owned my car for 2 years. Drove it 2500 miles. Changed the oil 3x already. First when I got it bc I trust no one. The other once a year and yes I send my oil to Blackstone so don’t give me that shit.
hey just wanted to add I seen a guy with a comment about his vanagon engine failure at low miles and some other people commenting idiotic comments about oil. high end and many modern new cars are going to specialty oils for their engines and transmissions. that is the way of the future. the reasons are many. fluid expansion, electronics submerged in oil, seals. you really should use manufacture recommended oil. also on pre roller engines with flat tappets you need to add zinc to protect the cam lobes. also if youre breaking in an engine you need to remove the inner valve springs on flat tappets other wise you will wipe out the lobes during break in then install them later after break in.
I see nothing wrong with a $8000 dollar AMG. Only a moron buys a Mercedes New. Buy them with 2-3 years use and 30k miles for half price. We have bought 5 this way.
I am from Toronto. I went to a cheaper place for an oil change on a CLA250. The price is C$160 tax included. This was the service A thing. Seeing your video here now I know there is no secret on the high prices, just because it is an MB! A very enjoying video. Thank you.
You made a mistake. You can just pour the oil into the oil filter housing. It's faster and there's no risk of spilling or dripping oil on any other parts.
Dude, you lost me at "A Toyota Camry, something poor people would drive" You know Warren Buffet drives cheap economy cars and he's the 3rd richest man on the planet? What a short sighted comment bro, what the literal fuck.
Maybe, but neither are economy cars. Camry is a family car and Cadillacs are luxury cars A Hyundai Accent or Toyota Yaris would be what I'd consider economy cars
The only consistency in B service at different MB dealerships is the oil change… Some will include either a new air filter, new windshield wiper blades, or some even include a brake flush, but NONE of them do the same things in their “B service”. Its a good idea to shop around for whats included, if you have multiple dealerships to choose from (big cities)! To me, ALL A services should include wiper blade AND air filter refills, and ALL B services should include either a brake or tranny flush, brake pads, or plugs. Those are all the services you should ever need for an amazing driving experience!
First you start the car so filter gets filled with oil, then you measure 😂 it’s so hard to be a tech and look at a DIY. Anyways, don’t take it personally, you’re doing something and you’re talking about it, that’s much more than most people do, respect
When I`m flat out in my Merc, I`d feel so safe knowing an idiot, who can`t even pour oil without it glugging, holding the container the wrong way with the spout at the bottom, and spilling it everywhere, inspected it.
I don't want to think how much money I've wasted sending my Benz to a Mechanic to do a service Geeez. I couldn't believe when I, took the old Oil Filter out (replaced by a supposedly reputable local mechanic who does work on much higher class cars than mine) that it was an "El Cheapo". I thought I was a complete mechanical clutz. Between Tavarish and Alex at Legit Street Cars, I have safely and efficiently replaced and upgraded my Brakes and completed an Oil change. I bought an Oil Extraction Pump and didn't even get under the car saving '000's on a lift and cents on a replacement Sump Plug Washer. The Car has the oil I choose, the Quality Filters that it deserves, and I'm still up almost $200.00 (everything in Australia is more expensive). Thank-you Tavarish, I wish you all the riches that TH-cam brings you.
It would not work correctly on this engine because of the dual sump setup, I still lift them and crack the oil pan drain screw I like to get everything out, the sucking technique works best when doing quick lube type express services at the dealer where we promise the service done under an hour and we still lift the car up to inspect it or else they yell at us lol, also I like to look under anyway because you would not believe how much shit people run over on the road and they think they came for an oil change but sometimes have to leave the car because they hit some shit that damaged their suspension on one side and their tires are wearing out all fucked up.
Aaron Johnson sorry you can't get a tube through oil fill to the pan through valve covers. So far haven't seen engine yet that works on and I'm 31 yr master tech. Old 2200 S10 4 cyl had dipstick in oil fill tube that might work or down SBC dip stick but I haven't seen many in my decades of service.
My rule of thumb is: if you want it and can afford it, buy it and enjoy it. Not everyone is living paycheck to paycheck. Some of us prefer to drive solid, well built, well weighted cars than be surrounded by cheap plastic interiors that rattle and creak after 3000 miles. My E-Class has 40,000 miles and has not one rattle or creak. And no structural issues. My doors are heavy. I pay more for maintenance. But the trade off is a great solid, quiet ride.
you did it wrong, you should change the filter before you drain the oil, now the dirty oil runs back into the engine instead of out. but hey, your the expert. im just an overpriced mechanic at a dealership... ( not mercedes )
Dave De Swert hey overpriced mechanic at a dealership....I always drain the oil first, then remove the filter . Are you saying the oil trapped in the filter runs back into the engine when you break it loose? It seems like it remains in the filter but I work on my cheap cars not high end autos.
Well it IS a Mercedes Benz, how dare a dirty little boy service their highly tuned driving machine! Only a fine young chap in a tuxedo shall service their Mercedes Benz! Oh Jeeves, fetch my lambskin walking shoes! #heavysarcasm
I am a Mercedes tech and have a bit of advice for you.
Next time completely remove the oil filter then drain the oil. The filter housing had a check valve and will retain old oil (about half a qt) unless the filter is removed.
Everyday Fleet Tech Fuck this douche bag, I wouldn't give him any advice.
i thought the same thing.
About the Douche Bag, or about removing filter first?
And likewise measure changed oil level after the filter has oil in it, not with an empty filter!
Everyday Fleet Tech good advice, i was just about to tell him the same thing.
Engineers who deliberately design products to be more difficult to repair and service should be forced at gunpoint to work as a mechanic for a couple of months.
Engineers simply make the engine. How bout you pull out the engine from the car and work on it outside of the engine bay. No more bitching then huh.
"Fuck it, I ain't gotta work on it"
That's why I like the Korean stuff. The layout is very well thought out by people who have appeared to have cut their teeth working on cars.
You want a complex car swished into a compact body, it's going to be tough :) I guess some engineering has different goals, and that the odd position is better for performance or longevity
If you make the car easier to work on, you're basically planning on failure.
This is why you only needed 8quarts instead of the 9 it should get.👍
Good comment. I came here to say this too
100% correct.
Thank you.
You can add the oil through the oil filter housing before replacing the filter. It's a much bigger hole and won't require a funnel.
Weese correct
You're right, but please go Yiff in hell regardless.
Also, you (and him) forgot to mention applying clean oil to the filter gasket. :)
Steve Olliff Or just some (installation?) oil from one of those spray cans. That works too.
removing the oil fill cap doesn't mater because the pcv valve and usually a crank case vacuum port making air able to get into the crank case through the intake manifold.
Also 2 drain plugs.
ok, this is no joke. my friend took his 2015 mercedes in to a shop he did business with.
The dealership has to pay for it since they did the change, if its under warranty
@@steve00alt70 He said it was a "shop he did business with".
That sounds like it wasn't the dealership he bought the car from.
Mercedes : A service
-Oil Change
-Filter Change
-Fluid Top Off

Something you may have not thought of: Changing the supercharger oil. They're two separate systems, and most people don't realize they need to change that oil. Other than that, great video!!
Those superchargers don't need oil changes with every motor oil change.
@@kickblake no but it's probably something most people don't think about or who knows the last time it was changed.
@@kickblake im sure it needs to be changed and has never been changed
That car doesn’t have a supercharger it has a turbocharger and it is connected to the vehicles engine oil system.
That's a badass garage. The custom wedge solely to fit the roof is ingenius. Another Tavarish invention? Love it.
The oil change is actually even a bit easier than you describe. Merc dealers use a siphon to suck out the oil from the dip stick tube. You don't even need a lift. Just buy a mitivac on amazon. You can practically do the oil change without getting your hands dirty.
Totally agree - the tricks of the trade!
Thanks for this man. I used to pay about 800 for B service and once I found out what they do, I was piss! Real men worked on their cars.

Lol but if you have a new Benz and factory warranty you have to take it to MB otherwise if something happens your warranty will be voided...if you have an old car by all means do stuff yourself
@@GoProGoalieUzi
Not true. The warranty will be upheld if you did the service yourself and kept your receipts for the parts purchased.
Motul is still better than Castrol or mobil1
It is always best to do your on oil change if you know how.😊👍🏻
“Why Germany lost The War”. . . they designed engines that were even more difficult to service than the British. . . and if you’ve EVER worked on a British car. . .
I think it was the Russians that defeated them or were they defeated
Some of those German techs used in the IIWW was actually pretty impressive. I think the Germans lost the war in spite of their technology...
@@liambyrne591 they lost because they where exhausted on alll fronts combined whit not beeing prepared for russian winter.
I do all the oil changes for my CLS55 with no issues and it cost me around 90$ tops ..

Here is how to save 320 dollars on oil change. step 1. buy 3000 dollar lift. step 2 buy professional oil catcher. step 3 profit
That will be my next car. My Benz is going back. Glad I leased it.
If you can find the drain plug you'll save $250. I did
This guy makes these videos to help people save money and educate car owners out of the kindness of his heart and to share his hobby.
Cool video, glad to see someone supporting DYI car maintenance that isn't so impossible to do by the average person.
except that he has a lift
You can use a dip stick it's a service dipstick that you use in the tube that is capped off with a red cap. I would send a picture but I can not post one here. The tube is located at the back left of the engine bay about where the name plate and the word AMG is
James Bambury I was wondering the same thing. The Audi's do the same thing, but you can buy a dipstick for them.
The recommended Mobil 1 0W40 is a very very good oil. I can't recommend it enough. I've studied mechanical engineering (specialized in automotive technology) here in Germany and we've done a lot of test series with different engine oils. Some findings where so bad that the manufacturer sued the faculty to remove the data from public access and said we must've tested counterfeit products (which was not the case)
In the case of Mobil 1 it's not just that they bought their way in with the car makers and the customer gets recommended a subpar product because of that.
These engines get completely dirty and sludged inside causing a lot of problems...any experienced mechanic can attest to that...
hi friend,
Which oil is better, Motul X-Cess 5w40 or Mobil 1ESP 5w30 for 2005 VW Jetta 1.6 petrol engine? Have you tested them? My car is 200k km. I have been using Motul X-Cess 5w40 for the last 4 changes. But, lifter voice started in the engine. So, I changed the lifters. During the change, we saw lots of oil sludge. The older owner had used Castrol Magnetec 10w40 during the first 120k km. Is it the reason of oil sludge? or motul causes it? what do you thing? Some mechanics say mobil 1 esp keeps engine cleaner than other oils. what is your opinion?
do u recommend mag1?
Is there any difference between a 40k km interval, and telling people "run it til it pukes"? I'm not about to trust anything in a gasoline motor past 20k, even if it is synthetic.
If your dumb enough to pay 300 for an oil change you definitely deserve that dent in your pocket. Smh
I buy whatever full synthetic oil is on sale and a good filter. The last oil change I did Quaker State Full Synthetic and a Purolator Pure One filter for only 24 dollars. Jiffy lube wants 58 dollars for a unknown filter and unknown bulk oil. Thanks buy no thanks, I will change it myself.
for the people who can buy a brand new Mercedes, $300 is nothing
Plugs, semi-synthetic oil and both OEM filters for my crappy car come to about $50 :D
Not necessarily true. Some cost under $40K which is less than a lot of the Ford/GM/Toyota/etc SUVs you see on the road. If a car costs only 50% more, an equally affordable oil change would cost only 50% more.
no. it is necessarily true
Before removing the bottom bolts you must open the filter so you the oil and the residues will easily flow out within the old oil. I worked in Mercedes and that was mandatory. (Sorry for my English)
You have nothing to be sorry for SerYanOto.
To properly check oil by MB- after you put your oil in showing 1/4 up the stick
1-Get car up to temp- shut car off
2- set a 13 min timer- when car is turned off
3- check dip stick after timer is up
4- add oil till half way on stick repeat step.
Oil filter looks like one of those old German grenades
Man from Nantucket lol
They called them "Potato Mashers" ... :-)
Stielhandgranate
You make great videos. Well-spoken, quick-paced, non-repetitive, keep it up!
As a Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Koenigegg, Pagani, and Bugatti mechanic you forgot to gizz in the oil to get give it that "extra" additive.
ErwinSchrodinger64 jizz not gizz 🤣🤣
Yeah, i would always go with mobil 1 over motul
I used to deliver oil for a living. Most of the other oils are the exact same at all of your local shops they just slapped a sticker on it when it comes to mobile one they do not play any games. If they're tank was contaminated the slightest bit we had to go back drain it and refill it. Mobil one is by far my favorite oil and that is all I want in my vehicles
Motul is better, but Mobil1 is just way better value
Scotty Kilmer told you not to buy a Benz. You have to listen, Son!

vrsca89 Hahaha...I love Scotty
F..... Kilmer, if you listen to that dumbass you should only buy 90s Toyotas because those are the only cars he knows how to work on!
Had an E350 for four years. Never paid over 70 bucks for an oil change...
Why was that?
Because he changed his own oil.

Reality check: Actual cost from DEALER: $132.22 TOTAL (Labor .4hrs= $58.40 , MB Filter $16.50, 9 quarts of MB oil (Mobil1) @ 5.99ea = $53.91, Seals, $3.41)
Not having oil spilled all over the tops of your underbelly pans in your carpeted engine compartment and having dirty oil because you didn't remove the filter first or read the service manual, and incorrect levels because you didn't check AFTER the engine was run, priceless? Well, maybe not, but because I pay almost as much for Mobil1 and a fleece filter from the local auto parts store, it's really sixty bucks going to the dealer- and since I'd have to jack the car, wait around for it to drain, possibly strip one of the plugs, and take the used oil to be disposed of, it ain't really that bad. Plus, I can sit around in the dealer's lounge for half an hour and gorge myself on their free bagels and coffee.

FYI, the Famous Ford 302 5.0 liter engine, which is the engine the 4.6 liter V8 replaced, had two drain plugs. By the way, the oil filter is referred to as a "canister" oil filter. Not being a snob (I actually drive a Camry, LOL).
Yeah, I had an '87 Town Car with the 302. It had two drain plugs, too. Not very informative; more PR than anything.
That’s what I was thinking too- I can’t count how many times my dad would complain about that growing up, not even working on a Crown Vic!
You should remove filter first. It dumps the filter oil directly into the pan that you have already drained. Been working on Mercedes for 20+ years.
"Why does it cost $320?!" That AMG badge, that's why
Remember when you were planning on putting a manual transmission in this car? I vaguely remember something like that. It was so long ago.
I'm planning on changing the entire exhaust.
Wet filter with oil then install (wet!)
On starting your not running engine while your filter is filling with oil.
Only with diesels.
THE BOSS oil will be brown after 10 lol
theres a lot of shit built up on the valve covers and insides the block
Nice, Ill enjoy driving my "noisy corolla" for many more years than the MB and for less money for the vehicle and repairs.
Brian Trevino nice I just focus on making more money
Flipping With Sean how does driving a slightly tougher car distract you from making money? I missed that part. Can you explain?
Sergei Zhukov oh in so many ways man
@@SeanPGribbons Whatever floats your boat, as long as it is a conscious choice and not "keeping up with the joneses". To me having to bring a car for long and expensive services is a big distraction. Toytas, lexuses and some hondas are pretty smooth and sound proof enough to bother about a bumpy ride.
Always go to an Independent MB Mechanic, they are at least 1/2 the price and they're many out there. Never take any car to the dealership
My garage is just parts no labor..........................................
Add oil, run engine allow for the oil to get through the galleries and fill the filter turn the engine off allow for the level to settle then check your level Im a MB tech p. S good practice change the air filters when you drop the oil and filter
Scotty Kilmer channel had a Mercedes that had an oil change, filter and fuel filter. It was $900.
lol he got played
"Companies pay manufacturer's lots of money to recommend their oil"
Followed by,
"I just got paid lots of money to recommend this oil instead"
inorite?
Haven't been to a dealer service since 1985 or so. I put Mobile Full-Synthetic in my E55 and I buy it at Walmart for $25/gal.
so your car never broke? damn german quality
Benz oil change at 12k miles for a $120,
Regular car oil change at 3k miles for a 40-50 dollar so if you added 3 times is will be the Same,
Andy Benz Mercedes use synthetic oil which costs a lot more
eternalending on top of that, the engines are finicky and don’t survive long in n regular oil. They will seize up
Which Motul oil do you suggest for my e90 M3 with the S65 V8? Thinking of switching over
Michael Broski
Use motul racing 10-60 or liqui moly race 10-60

tony americas was that suppose to be funny? Clicked this bc I didn’t like having the notification icon in my app.
driving an e90 m3 and asking on youtube what oil to use.... dude, u dont deserve a car like that.
civiere I’m just asking to be curious.
That lift is BEAUTIFUL! would love to have one of those in my dream garage.
"Something Poor people will drive" says the guy who bought an $8000 AMG LOOOL
Dude, you lost me at "A Toyota Camry, something poor people would drive"
You know Warren Buffet drives cheap economy cars and he's the 3rd richest man on the planet? What a short sighted comment bro, what the literal fuck.
Jeremy Remele Doesn't he drive a Cadillac? I'd hardly call that an economy car
Perhaps the correct term is "modest". What's your point? A fully load Camry costs almost the same as a fully loaded Cadillac.
Maybe, but neither are economy cars. Camry is a family car and Cadillacs are luxury cars
A Hyundai Accent or Toyota Yaris would be what I'd consider economy cars

The only consistency in B service at different MB dealerships is the oil change… Some will include either a new air filter, new windshield wiper blades, or some even include a brake flush, but NONE of them do the same things in their “B service”. Its a good idea to shop around for whats included, if you have multiple dealerships to choose from (big cities)! To me, ALL A services should include wiper blade AND air filter refills, and ALL B services should include either a brake or tranny flush, brake pads, or plugs. Those are all the services you should ever need for an amazing driving experience!
Check out the TH-camr Mercedes Source he might want to help!
I love his vids!
That would be a great collab to have @mercedessource appear in a vid!
Dude got some solid B cups yo.
Suj haha wtf bruhh
First you start the car so filter gets filled with oil, then you measure 😂 it’s so hard to be a tech and look at a DIY. Anyways, don’t take it personally, you’re doing something and you’re talking about it, that’s much more than most people do, respect
No oil change is worth $320......
Opel uses Shell Helix.... just make sure it has 'LL' (long life) written on it...
"I got a great deal on a Mercedes."

"I SHOULD HAVE NEVER BOUGHT THIS THING!"
Change the oil yourself.
@@ricky-sanchez woosh

Actually, Mercedes doesn't drain the oil; they just stick a tube in through the top where you add new oil, and suck all the old oil out.
Old 2200 S10 4 cyl had dipstick in oil fill tube that might work or down SBC dip stick but I haven't seen many in my decades of service.
it takes time also to remove the cover underneath the engine thats what we do with covers u have to remove around 10 bolts
Aaron Johnson not for the SL55!!
Aaron Johnson won't all the gunk, metal residue and dirt would remain at the bottom?
