      DIRECTIONAL Rotors...
Do you know in which *direction* they are supposed to be installed?
Like OEM here: scooping air from the outside towards the hub
-or pumping air from the hub towards outside?
I guess the answer depends on the air flow around the wheels while in motion...
Are you fan of "ceramic" pads on harder discs ? (as opposition to semi-met pads on soft discs)

    Mechanic's Tip Tavarish:
Use anti seize on just about every bolt and contact point between metal parts. You will thank me when its time to remove them again.
I personally like the copper antiseize but the silver one works fine too. It will be the difference between having to labor with dampers and pulleys as opposed to them coming out efforlessly. Use it on the hub also before installing the rotor being careful to not let any get on the rotor itself. It works just as well as a thread lock and sealant.
After doing a timing belt/water pump service on my 1993 J30 the water pump took a crap less than a year after. Having used antiseize on it made the job so much easier. Try it and you will become adicted to it

FCP parts fluctuate... sometimes wildly. 230 for coils turned into 277$ and a fuel pump jumped 75$. Now suppliers, supply and demand, and other factors influence the price but if you see a good price on their site jump on it. Oh and they say oil is also covered by their lifetime warranty lol.

Hey Таварищ, I drove for 50K mile with the SBC visit shop error before it actually started failing, when the brakes would sink. Had to replace the reservoir, but the brushes were only 10% used. With iCarsoft MBII you can service and test these SBC pumps without sweat. I would recommend using Meyle platinum rotors instead of mercedes rotors. They resist rust a lot longer and look a lot better, plus you don't pay for the star logo.

Nice car to start with.... As for the brake pad under hang (or disc overhang relative to the pad). that is an intended design feature on MB's part (there are many manufactures that do it too). It is typically about .015" to .020" over over/under hang. It is not intended to see if the disc is excessively worn (thats just an added benefit). The real reason why most manufactures do that is to for one, make 100% use of the pad's available surface area which reduces heat within the pad and reduces wear rate of the pad and the other equally important reason for it is manufacturing tolerances withing the individual components (especially since a few of those components are subbed out to other manufactures so MB is at the mercy of that manufactures allowable tolerance.
If the designed called for the pad to be flush in a production situation but all the parts had say a +/- .003" allowable tolerance, the stack-up of parts outside of the design size but still within allowable tolerance could push the pad out quite a bit (or pull it in.... just depends on if the parts are on the + side of the - side.
The problem with Scotty Kilmer and people like him is they are "Tech's" and not design engineers and do not understand the reasoning behind certain decisions made by the engineers. To even further discredit him on that video you clipped from, he mentioned Toyota, Chevy and Ford not doing that and I can show him a few models from each manufacture that have the same overlap.
There is however an implied design flaw on MB and brembo's part with most of their brake systems as it pertains to how the cars are driven (typically). This is why the disc's wear noticeably worse then other manufactures. The problem is in the brake pad selection. What many do not realize is that brake pads have to two different friction properties one is abrasive when they are too cold and adhesive when they are at the right temperature. When pads that are designed to be effective at elevated temperatures associated with car being driven hard are used at the colder temperatures associated with how the typical driver drives in daily commute and putting around, they are very abrasive. This is a necessary evil in order to have a brake system (production type and every day intended use) that will still perform well when the car is beat on / driven hard. Obviously MB wouldn't build a car that can be driven hard and yet put pads on it that were going to fade horribly when the temps start to rise above what the typical driver demands out of his or her car. This is why you dont see that type of wear with just a singe set of brake pads on grocery getters like say a Toyota Camry or a Chevy Malibu, etc.... Their pads are only in the abrasive friction state at very low temps and are in adhesive friction properties by time the average temp in the pad is about 120°f or so. Pads like MB typically uses are in abrasive friction properties until probably closer to 300~350°F, so putting around town and daily commute type braking causes excessive disc wear because the pads are rarely reaching the temps for them to go into their adhesion friction properties. BUT hey, at least you know that you can rely on the brakes being able to repeatedly stop you from 100+mph.... Cant say that I would rely on Camry brakes doing the same.

    • @CJ-ty8sv
      @CJ-ty8sv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually most European (including German) brake pads are lower metallic and softer pads, not higher metallic and they do not cool more rapidly for fade resistance. They rely on shear size of brake system to keep temps in check and cool quickly. This is why most many of the higher end cars from Europe use significantly larger brakes. Most other manufactures (American, Japanese, etc..) use smaller brakes but a higher metallic pad do deal with the much higher average temperatures seen due to the smaller discs typical of those cars and for longer life....
Its is often thought that the higher metallic content is what causes squeal and more dust. Its actually opposite. The squeal is actually caused from vibrations between the pads backing plate and the caliper piston(s) (and anvil on floating caliper designs). Higher friction pads (which are also softer) cause more vibration and thus more squeal. This softer higher friction material also wears at a faster rate and thus the more dust produced.
The softer higher friction material however cant handle heat as well since the elimination of asbestos so most manufactures went to semi-metallic pads when they found that NAO pads faded too bad without massive brake disc and pads. Again, this goes back to why many high end European cars use such massive brake disc's... It allows them to go back to a pad similar to NAO pads without the worry of fade, especially with better resin binders technology that do not outgas like the old NAO.

He is right, You MUST disable SBC before servicing the brakes or you risk damaging them or yourself. There are ways to do this without SDS (like unplugging the SBC wiring harness, disconnecting both batteries, or using the published procedures). However, Tavarish didn't mention that once the brakes are replaced, you need SDS to re-active SBC so that it does a proper calibration. Without doing that, you may have reduced braking efficiency.

I have a E85 Mercedes C230 sport 2007 that has the same brakes on the front. But my wife has a 2014 Audi Q5 course she had to get the top of the line one but u only live once. Anyways I had here go to Audi and price out the brakes. They of course came back with $1400.00. I checked the back they were fine bought really nice cross drilled rotors and a nice set of ceramic pads for $260.00. That was in parts and I did it myself. Which I always do all my own work as well. My car started whinning I chase it to my alternator it was the rear bearing. I had the bearing pressed on for 15 bucks and I put it all back together fixed. If you own a Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, VW or BMW ECS Tuning is the place!

Auto Zone does the same thing, and you dont have to save the packaging for years, you take the old brakes you bought there back and they'll give you a new set for free. If I take something off of my vehicle to "send" it back then I cant utilize that vehicle again until I get the new parts.

Tavarish , You are the go to guy for straight information and remedies against being kept in the dark by the currently reigning "Prince of darkness " ( Use to be Lucas ) " Benz Electronic controls and sensors" THANK YOU ..I just can't tell you how so very helpful you are by presenting your videos about real life Benz repairs / improvements..I'm old school and very good mechanically however the problem/s I encounter that hold me back always involve electronic controls and sensors ..My SLK55 /AMG runs beautifully, never a problem other than I have 5 trouble codes one telling me to replace the brakes due to wear...Last week I did a brake job replacing the rotors / pads / wear sensor, there was only one sensor, and it was not touching the rotor nor was it worn or sending a pad replacement needed trigger signal, and repacked the wheel bearings..Still seeing the same 5 replace worn brakes trouble code/s especially the brakes need relining, take car to WORKSHOP ! ..The Benz " WORKSHOP" requests placing my wallet , credit cards ,and life insurance policy on the counter before bending over and, miracles of miracles , they offer Vaseline as an extra cost emollient...I understand pumps and brush type motors and now think that my car's ( 2004 Benz SLK55 /AMG with 94k miles) electronic brake cyclic counter needs to be reset..Where can I purchase the "Recovery Device By obd " as shown in your video used to increase the brake cycles threshold to a higher value ? For sure I'll buy your recommended products and go to vendors.....TAVARISH FOR PRESIDENT 2020 ..You have my vote..

How are those ebc redstuff brake pads treating you? Is the dust level better than OEM? My OEM R230 SL63 pads are way too dusty and I’m thinking about trying a set of redstuff pads

I see what you mean, it is a handy way of getting a simple visual idea of the wear.

Shouldn't the drill pattern be going the other way? is the rotor on the wrong side?

Thanks for the FCP Euro tip. I now get everything I can from them. Only European cars. Everything and they literally mean everything they sell is guaranteed for life. Spark plugs. Who guarantees spark plugs? They do. Antifreeze? Yes that too. Their stuff is reasonably priced. And they have a lot. And the process to receive your new part is easy. There are some areas of parts they are lacking but when you have a car with a $500 water pump or a $700 fuel pump why settle for a 1 or 2 year warranty?

product tradebacks are fantastic, VModa for example, which sells audio/headphones. i bought a headset from them, it had a fault, so instead of just sending a replacement, they sent the next model up, and anything you buy there, you can trade it back in and get something better/newer. lucky eyeballs are held in by bits of skin, because my eyes were trying to escape my skull!

FCP Euro, the countries finest contractor. A large majority of their parts are shipped out by small companies that they sub-contract, put an FCP sticker on and upcharge you, that's why they can send you free stuff. Check out to see if you have a local European parts dealer, more often than not you can get better deals going direct!
-Source: Sold and shipped Euro parts and stuck FCP stickers on them and charged the customers 10% more

Get video as always Tavarish. I've had a look at FCPeuro and they stock pretty much everything for my 1987 Volvo 740! And so much cheaper than a lot of stuff here in the UK.
