    This is simply the most amazing tutorial ever. I have tried to model cars from blueprints before and I failed since all the drawings I found were badly aligned. I tried to work around them in photoshop, to make guidelines in blender to the blueprints, nothing worked out. I never tought to create the blueprints in this way. This video is the key what I was looking for it will makes the modeling so easy now. Thank you CGMasters!!!

    This is excellent! I am currently working through your CG Masters car modelling course (which is great, btw) and although it's basically the most in-depth tutorial I have ever done, the one thing missing is that you supplied blueprints without explaining how they were created or where they came from. This explains things wonderfully, and to be honest, I don't think I would have enjoyed making my own Jeep blueprints, and it would definitely be a bad idea to make the user create their own blueprints to work from in case we mess them up, so I'm really glad the car modelling course comes with your blueprints :D

      CG Masters I do have one question though. Many objects, especially cars, have air intake vents or holes that you often cannot tell how far they go into the body just by the pictures. For example, the corvette you are using here. It has air intake vents just behind the front wheels and in front of the doors. This is the hardest part of modeling for me. My question is how would I know how far parts like this go into the body? Do I have to eyeball it?

    • @blengine
      @blengine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If good reference photos fail me I usually search youtube for videos. You'll often find great closeup shots when you search for videos on repairing/replacing parts of the car. For example, here's a video on replacing one of the vents on the corvette, where he actually takes the vent out and gives you a real clear shot of what's going on: th-cam.com/video/CTR1LdhaksU/w-d-xo.html

  • @nokedlipudinggal8276
    @nokedlipudinggal8276 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Neat technic. Still relies on eyeballing and guessing. Don't get me wrong one of the best technics out there. You can also use snipping tool in WIN 10 to grab a screen shot. What do you think about buying plastic model kits and shooting photos of those yourself? Much less perspective shortening that way. Has anyone ever contacted car manufacturers for official blueprints?

    • @blengine
      @blengine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah it definitely is still about eyeing things up. The model kit idea is a fantastic idea actually, and they're cheap too. Had I thought of that I would've used that to make blueprints for the car creation course, would've made things a lot easier on me. And no I haven't tried getting blueprints directly from a manufacturer. -Chris

      Scale models are not very accurate most of the time, as they have been modeled originally with guesswork (and some of them with very lazy guesswork). If you tried to model a car using blueprint, you would notice that some blueprints are not matched correctly with other sides, this method can sort that problem, although it's an extra step but it's worth it because i tried model a car and put all reference to their side and when i am at halfway done then i realise something is wrong and it's not aligned perfectly but with blueprint it's totally fine.

      A black diffuse material is pure black so it gave me the black lines I needed for the blueprints. If I wanted to render the lines white, which I often do, then I'd use the emission shader for that. -Chris

  • @ShadeAKAhayate
    @ShadeAKAhayate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    3dS/Maya: open up images in PS/Gimp, trace everything automatically/semiauto (or adjust some BPs you find to fit). Then open up these inverted blueprints, map them to planes located wherever you wish, add transparency to all except lines, freeze -- voila, there's your 3D blueprint stack, forming a 3D image of what you're doing. The only true application of what was described above is drawing complex non-planar support contours to clamp/align to when modelling.
    Blender:
    1. Trace everything with poly/spline hands on, adjust everything hands on, convert to volumetric lines, set color, group all the stuff together, freeze.
    2. OR use PS/Gimp to trace everything on auto/semiauto like mentioned above, open in Blender, then goto p.1 with hands-on tracing of everything with volumetric lines.
    Blender does not support work window transparency, which makes it horribly more work to do such a simple thing as to set up volumetric blueprints.
    Then comes the matter of it not having good object transparency settings (with different brightness for elements on different sides related to POV), which makes it a mess. But that's when you are deep into modelling. In 3dS you _can_ isolate selection/hide stuff _if you prefer._ In Blender that tecknique is mandatory.
    :(

    • @blengine
      @blengine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trace everything automatically in PS how exactly? Even if you can get clean lines you still need to compensate for perspective distortion in reference photos by editing all blueprints to align, but an automated way to trace the initial contours and get clean results would be great. -Chris

    • @ShadeAKAhayate
      @ShadeAKAhayate 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Applying a combo of Poster Edges (with 0 Posterization) and Glowing Edges filters or Poster Edges and Color Range Select generally does most of the work. Cleanup is usually minimal. But if an image is complex, it may need to be blurred, color-leveled, etc in preparation for these filters. The result should be clear and readable contours of all at least somewhat contrast stuff.

    • @blengine
      @blengine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had those filters in mind when you mentioned tracing in PS, but had to ask in the off chance you knew of a better way because those results definitely aren't going to be clean. Have you drawn car blueprints with those filters before? Mind if I take a look at them?

    • @ShadeAKAhayate
      @ShadeAKAhayate 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There may be a better way -- there _should be_ one -- but I don't know about it. These filters do almost all the work. I'll just add a quick example: from image like this 1.bp.blogspot.com/-EqOaD5UGcTk/TrQELeBQ6PI/AAAAAAAAC_4/isfaSn2vbOw/s1600/Side+view+garden.jpg on the first iteration there can be done something like drive.google.com/open?id=0B5XZmo39RcRuZHpRQTgwdTg0RGs
      Everything is traceable except a couple of lines. And that's just automatic conversion with one filter active (background partially deleted ofc).
      But my main theme is not about necessity of working to make crystal clear blueprints. It's the inability to position them in 3D space to represent the model to be that concerns me most. Even if we have perfect BPs, we either have to re-trace these in Blender by splines, or put them in the background. OR build the model with rendered viewport. And that is sad.

    • @blengine
      @blengine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not bad at all! As long as you've got excellent reference pics seems like that could do just fine. Though when it comes to needing to edit the blueprints to correct perspective distortion and align all the different views with each other like in this tutorial I'm not sure if this would be the best way to go.

    • @blengine

      Possibly, I don't know anything about Grease Pencil yet to say for sure. There are lots of mesh adjustments that happen in order to get details lined up in every view, so I couldn't say how well grease pencil works with that kind of editing. If grease pencil strokes can be edited similarly to edges and vertices then yeah it might be useful to use grease pencil since it's at the very least easier to get visible strokes in the final render.

      hmm I've worked with CAD and I can't picture how that could be true. Could you give a summary of the process you'd use? -Chris

    • @Jordan-dr9hq
      @Jordan-dr9hq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may be exaggerating about the reduction in time; however, CAD software is dedicated to creating "blueprints", so naturally the process would be simpler....just drafting, no camera setup, and most importantly creates drawings at a measurable scale.
      Again, I think what you have created is nice looking, and I enjoyed the tutorial. Hopefully you don't take my critique as negativity, I just don't understand the reason for 2D drafting in 3D software when you can use dedicated drafting software made for this type of work. Is there something beyond the final product of this tutorial that this imagery can be used for? Thanks!

      With this technique I would just extrude the lines more so the lines are thicker. However, I'm sure there are better ways at adding thickness to the lines that are more adjustable. Like Grease Pencil might be a good tool to use for all this now, and I believe it's easy to adjust line thickness with that.

    I know I'm a little late on this, but recently I've been struggling to find blueprints for cars that line up well and such. Can you recommend any sites that have good pictures of cars? I've been looking but haven't found anything yet.

    • @blengine
      @blengine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The car manufacturer sites often have good (and sometimes orthographic) photos/renders, but this might not help for older car models. Used car sites are a great place to find photos (especially interiors), but might be limited when it comes to straight-on photos. There's really no one perfect source that I know of, I usually just start on google and see what I can find, then to the manufacturer site, then to used car sites.

      Blueprints are an orthographic line drawing of something from different angles that can be used to build it in 3d. In this tutorial we draw the front, side, back, and top views of the car using photos, and then we can use these images to model the car in 3d. -Chris

      Top views are much harder to find than other views, so you may not be able to find one for your particular car. It's not always needed though. You can often just use front/back and side views to get all the details lined up nicely, and then when you're modeling you can use some photos of the car as a reference for how the roof and top-down details look.

    • @blengine

      I'm not sure why I didn't include the links to the reference pictures when I made this tutorial, I guess because I didn't intend for this to be a step-by-step tutorial but made this to just show the techniques. I don't remember exactly where I got these references, but two good places to get reference photos of cars are the manufacturer's site (if it's a newer car they'd still have on their site), and used car sales websites. People selling used cars will often have a lot of photos, and pretty decent interior shots too. They won't try and get too fancy with the photography so you'll often find straight-on pictures from further away which can be used as your more orthographic references.

      If you don't have decent references then it's going to be a lot harder to make decent blueprints. But as long as you have a couple clear photos of the car (even if they're angled photos) you may be able to model straight from the photos using image modeling techniques, but these are not techniques I teach.
