Being a yugizoomer myself, I never knew how much history Burning abyss actually holds. People do talk about Nekroz being a tier 0 deck, or Qli having the first relevant Towers monster, while Shaddolls were quite popular and some of the monsters even relevant today. But turns out BA was quite the menace at its peak as well. Thank you Farfa for history lessons

Secrets of Eternity was released in January 2015. This set introduced the Infernoids, a series of monsters that can Special Summon themselves to the field by banishing other Infernoids from either the hand or graveyard. Notable cards in set include Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Qliphort Monolith, Uni-Zombie, Nephe Shaddoll Fusion, and a card that would bolster Satellarknight to combat the Burning Abyss Shaddoll meta, Stellarknight Constellar Diamond. In this series, both Nyhmnim and myself will be opening 24 booster packs or 1 box of a core Yu-Gi-Oh! booster set. I remember playing against PK Fire in 2016 at my locals and the entire concept of combining B.A with PK was just baffling. One of the last decks I played was Tellarknights, which debuted in the TCG at the same time as Burning Abyss. I played for a couple more years up until shortly after the PePe deck was nerfed by an emergency banlist. I have fond memories of having played it with friends at college, and I still keep tabs on the game despite not playing anymore. Crazy how fast time flies.
Oh, is this a remake of the "Legacy of the Burning Abyss" video? Great stuff. Can't wait to watch. Looking it up, I can't believe it's already been 7 years. Makes me feel ancient.
Burning Abyss is my favourite deck exactly because of his capacity to be spalashable and adapt to the circumstances. I've seen the clip with Michael Forner at 53:00 and I have a BA story about us ahha. I remember we both topped a regional (respectively, 3th and 4th place) in Italy in january 2017, right before the release of Zodiac (I feel like the D/D/D structure deck was going to release the week after). The meta at the time was, in fact, Majespecter/Pendulum mash-ups, Paleozoic and ABC. I ran BA Infernoid (that deck carried me undefeated in locals at the time since october 2016 till the release of Zodiac) and the deck was surprisingly good. You would go very often into F0 if you needed to take out some hard to beat monsters, steal opponent's monsters, and then tribute them off via Seitsemas/Attondel before giving them back to the opponent. Seitsemas was also a non-target banish, and you could use any Infernoid to tribute a Dante (with materials under) or a rhino warrior to trigger more effects. In that event (fairly alright in terms of dimensions, it was 7 turns) Forner instead was playing literal Pure BA. With DAD, BLS...it was incredible overall to see BA thriving even there inn such different forms
This is unironically the best video you've ever made (imo that I've seen). I'm sure it'd be super hard to do a similar video like this without the same passion for the subject, but it'd be super cool to see more retrospective stuff from you.
True, but I don't see a video like this doing well in terms of views. From a content creators perspective, this video seems more like a passion project than a good successful video.
Burning Abyss last topped a 250 person UK remote duel extravaganza in 2021, before that it's previous two tops were 2019's 455 person YCS Sao Paolo, and before that, it was semi-consistently topping in 2016 and previous, with a single top in 2017 (all of tier 2 competitive events, sourced from ygoprodeck)
outside of Beatrice not long for this world I think one of the main reasons why BA didn't get killed is largely because the deck is well fair it's not overly oppressive and isn't something everyone will want to play but just enough people will like to play it that it isn't a Tier 0 deck but a GOOD deck that can top with a good player behind it.
BAs really were hella versatile. A friend of mine got me into yugioh in 2014 and he got me my first deck which was Dark World. That deck if I’m remembering correctly ran 2 Scarm to search out either Tour Guide or Broww. Ah good times
For those of you who lack the understanding of how to use the fabled field spell. You can loop fabled grimro + the new lvl 2 tuner+ field spell to loop grimro 2-3 times to extend your combo. At the expense of 2 random cards in hand. One grimro in rotation is the equivalent of a plus 3. At the least plus 2.
So, a theme with unique and interesting art and design, good balancing and reasonable restrictions, combined with great generic support and synergy with other themes released at the time make a balanced and long term viable competitive deck?! Huh... who would have thought. Guess Konami really can design good cards if they want to... or they just forget how to I guess. Thanks Farfa, for one of the best possible tributes to one of Yu-Gi-Oh's most iconic decks ever printed! You and your team did an outstanding job, truly, thank you for this amazing video.
I'm really hoping the deck gets support sometime in the future, I loved it back in 2016 when I was heavily playing, and it helped me get back in in 2024 In fact I'm pretty sure I played BA at the 2016 YCS in Minneapolis lol
i remember someone telling me in like 2016 when i wanted to play dark world that they wouldnt while "decks like burning abyss are around". so i still very much remember BA as a relevant deck in my early yugioh days
Long form deck history is good content do more 👌 and add more MD/simulator visualizations of common lines because trying to follow an unfamiliar deck in paper yugioh is like trying to learn from a 100yo Polynesian basket weaver by watching
This is an amazing video and I know it was done because it’s your fav deck so it’s more of a special ocassion, but I wouldn’t mind if you revisited other decks in this type of format.
PK fire has to be one of my favourite decks I’ve played. That second triangle format of kozmo, monarch and PK Fire was so fun and I haven’t seen a format that diverse until AGOV with YCS Bolognia.
BA is still such a cool archetype to me. It actually got me interested in literature a bit and I started to read Dante's Inferno. I didn't finish it because it was awful to read but I love that the game got me into actively educating myself on the inspiration for archetypes and topics outside of Yugi.
It will be the excuse to give us the useless well-balanced summon locking support that's usually held back until it can ruin the second wave of TCG decks.
@@markburns2621 except BA was a TCG Exclusive archetype, which means that after it gets its OCG support, that's it. It got Cherubini later, sure. But TCG Exclusive archetypes almost never get additional support after their second TCG wave and 1 OCG Band-Aid.
I do hope BA gets some support at some point, it does deserve it. If lightsworn can get some, then so should decks like BA, shaddol, ECT should; I guess you can take some solace in knowing that if it's possible for lightsworn to get support, BA can.. maybe they're just starting at the beginning and working their way up through the formats. I think Paleo will get somemore eventually as well, but that's another topic.
Thank you for this trip down memory lane. As a yugi…boomer? (I really started playing in Duelist Alliance) the ARC-V era feels like the golden age of yugioh, and not many decks exemplify the design philosophy of the era like BA. Strong, consistent, adaptable, resilient, but with clearly defined weaknesses that encouraged clever deckbuilding. Here’s to another 10 years of Dante!
2021-2022 ba was an engine for phantom knights. Oh how the tables turned. Ba used to be my most hated deck in 2014 because I loved shaddolls and yang zing but 2016 with pk fire I enjoyed the deck for the first time and metalfoes,pk fire where my two decks for 2016 and it was probably the most amount of fun I had playing Yu-Gi-Oh.
The time BA came out was right around the time I got back into Yugioh, and even though I didnt really keep up with the metagame or play BA, this was a great trip down memory lane.
I played shaddolls back in the day and I can confirm everyone overlooked ba. At first everyone glanced at the archetype and said “how does it even win”. Bro it crushes your spirit by grinding your soul from your body. Fortune tune wasn’t mentioned but between it and astral force it was literally impossible to remove it all if they pulled you into the late game. That being said I probably had the most fun in that meta before the support came for all of the tier 1 decks and the triangle formed
A small nitpick: Cir is supposed to be pronounced as "cheer" and not "seer", since it has an Italian etymology, derived from the word for "pig" or "hog".
Although it may not be as "premiere" as tcg tops (even tought pricing might beg to differ). In masterduel last year Jaxliao won the third edition of Dkayed's MCS with PK Burning Abyss in middle of spright and runick meta. I strongly recomend people go watch his run, It is the closest thing to creating magic I've ever seen someone ever do while piloting his deck
Bruh, I literally already made a BA Unchained deck around March. The community just needs to find new supplemental engines/packages like every other archetype in this game until it receives the Structure Deck R treatment. I think Lightsworn might actually have a lot of potential for mills off of Dante because a lot of the Lightsworn monsters don't need to be sent by card effect in order to proc their effects. It was something I experimented a bit with in my homebrew format that i'm working on, and i think you could probably translate it over fairly well into the normal format due to just how fucking hyper-consistent modern Yugioh decks are. You could run a ton of searchers for it, its not out of the realm of possibility. Not to mention that Weiss is a fiend, so you can grab it off of Muckracker or use it to go into your Yama line. And the BA monsters themselves are still really decent disruption pieces.
Man, this takes me back When I think of Yugioh, November 2015 is the peak format... *I LITERALLY HAVE A YUGIOH SIMULATOR I DOWNLOADED THAT I REFUSE TO UPDATE AND HAVE FROZEN IN TIME TO THAT SPECIFIC INSTANT...* Maybe something is wrong with me.
It’s always been my favorite deck ever since release. I really hope it gets support someday, like a field spell that just is actual hell, which could unlock both abilities on each creature and kill the xenolock. Though whether it does or doesn’t, it’s still the best
Block Dragon Burning Abyss was in the top 4 of the Team YCS in YCS Vegas right before COVID. I should know since I helped him build it and test it (also hi Farfa! It’s Kevin from Gage’s channel 😊)

Farfa printed Burning Abyss in his garage on pieces of cardboard. Konami merely adapted the cards into yugioh
45:04 rare footage of 2016 josh
Its like it fused whith elon musk
there was some earlier he was on shaddoll
@@darkionizergameplays8809true😂
Burning Abyss last topped a 250 person UK remote duel extravaganza in 2021, before that it's previous two tops were 2019's 455 person YCS Sao Paolo, and before that, it was semi-consistently topping in 2016 and previous, with a single top in 2017 (all of tier 2 competitive events, sourced from ygoprodeck)
the yugioh capsule monsters coliseum ost in the background goes SO hard
zombies and BA have been the two decks I've played consistently over the past seven years, nothing else ever really stuck with me
dante never dies
outside of Beatrice not long for this world
I think one of the main reasons why BA didn't get killed is largely because the deck is well fair it's not overly oppressive and isn't something everyone will want to play but just enough people will like to play it that it isn't a Tier 0 deck but a GOOD deck that can top with a good player behind it.
Bro wasn't joking when he said this was in the works😂
Great content! Love this documentary format, allows me to know the history that I didn't get to live. Keep it up, proud of you.
BAs really were hella versatile. A friend of mine got me into yugioh in 2014 and he got me my first deck which was Dark World. That deck if I’m remembering correctly ran 2 Scarm to search out either Tour Guide or Broww. Ah good times
Missed opportunity to bring back the endphase outro😭
Loved this video Farfa. I enjoy when you do content outside of masterduel. Especially when it's about something you're so passionate about
Excellent video, brother. You can tell lots of research and work went into it. Well done 👏
I'm really hoping the deck gets support sometime in the future, I loved it back in 2016 when I was heavily playing, and it helped me get back in in 2024
In fact I'm pretty sure I played BA at the 2016 YCS in Minneapolis lol
That was a well done presentation farfa. I appreciate the work you and your team did for this video... I admit I'd like to see this as a series
i remember someone telling me in like 2016 when i wanted to play dark world that they wouldnt while "decks like burning abyss are around". so i still very much remember BA as a relevant deck in my early yugioh days
Ah Burning Abyss, two words that most people only ever see in the bit of Beatrice's text that you only ever read once
Long form deck history is good content do more 👌 and add more MD/simulator visualizations of common lines because trying to follow an unfamiliar deck in paper yugioh is like trying to learn from a 100yo Polynesian basket weaver by watching
I needed this.
Thank you Farfa. Really. This bit of nostalgia is what I needed
he actually made it. The absolute mad lad
Good old days of glasgowYGO
Jesus Christ SOUL CHARGE era. What an incredible time. 🧙♂️
I wasn't expecting to get so emotional by the end! Really well researched and edited video.
This is an amazing video and I know it was done because it’s your fav deck so it’s more of a special ocassion, but I wouldn’t mind if you revisited other decks in this type of format.
Excited to watch this one. Probably won't get the views it deserves for the length, but i love seeing a passion project. Ty farfa
i still remember dante being a $25-$30 card and then (it felt like overnight) becoming a $100 secret
Just u wait until Beatrice gets banned
It will be the excuse to give us the useless well-balanced summon locking support that's usually held back until it can ruin the second wave of TCG decks.
You suck
@@markburns2621 except BA was a TCG Exclusive archetype, which means that after it gets its OCG support, that's it. It got Cherubini later, sure. But TCG Exclusive archetypes almost never get additional support after their second TCG wave and 1 OCG Band-Aid.
@@ThatOneWeirdFlex i mean spyrals did
Really respect the amount of love you showed your pet deck in this massive video
A wonderful trip down memory lane. Thanks for the good times!
Amazing video, literally the only complaint is that gages audio was a bit loud comapred to yours. Fingers crossed BA can ride one last time
I played BA in 2017 when i started playing tcg . Your video was a big part of why. Thank you far far! :)
I think you hit the nail on the head for Golden Age. I still love the game where it's at today but I think that there was something special that era.
I didn’t realize how much lore Josh had with the paleos… no wonder he got that special spot at Konami
I remember seeing dinh-kha's list. It's actually what got me back into yu-gi-oh back then. Crazy deck.
I love burning abyss i want more support to bring it in line with modern standards. I miss 2014-2017
A small nitpick: Cir is supposed to be pronounced as "cheer" and not "seer", since it has an Italian etymology, derived from the word for "pig" or "hog".
Ok, this is Farfa's main deck, I think he knows how to pronounce the cards better then you /s
Wow good to know I've been pronouncing this word incorrectly for 10 years. Good stuff
That good ol’ Card Of Demise made my Dark Magician deck legit back in 2017 🛠️
Although it may not be as "premiere" as tcg tops (even tought pricing might beg to differ).
PKFire will forever be my favorite iteration. Shabyss was cool, but PKFire had such a feel to it it was hard to put down.
1:03:12 oh hell no, that would make her even MORE splashable with all the rank 3 enablers
Man, this takes me back
When I think of Yugioh, November 2015 is the peak format...
*I LITERALLY HAVE A YUGIOH SIMULATOR I DOWNLOADED THAT I REFUSE TO UPDATE AND HAVE FROZEN IN TIME TO THAT SPECIFIC INSTANT...*
Maybe something is wrong with me.
There should be a time wizard format from Duelist Alliance to MR4. loved it
It’s always been my favorite deck ever since release. I really hope it gets support someday, like a field spell that just is actual hell, which could unlock both abilities on each creature and kill the xenolock. Though whether it does or doesn’t, it’s still the best
I helped you write some of the original script in 2017. Felt good to hear my words still being used lol.
Block Dragon Burning Abyss was in the top 4 of the Team YCS in YCS Vegas right before COVID. I should know since I helped him build it and test it (also hi Farfa! It’s Kevin from Gage’s channel 😊)
I can't even watch a 3 minute video without my attention span saying no but I watched this entire video 😂 unreal video lad, loved every minute ❤
Holy Cow. That Deck Came out on my Birthday!
Thank you for everything you’ve given to us as your fans and as a community Farfa!
I would love to see burning abyss get support to bring it back into the 2024 meta.
It's nice when you can pinpoint the exact moment in time a game you used to love started going to shit. Thanks for keeping track
I use burning abyss with archfiends currently and its SO GOOD
More videos like this farfa! this slapped
Nice, now read the whole " Divina commedia " ( the divine comedy ) by Dante to learn even more about this deck 😎😎😎. ( Or at least " l'inferno ")
I've got no jokes for the haha BA man, this is just one of the greatest documentaries in Yugioh's history. A phenomenal view into truly one of the greatest competitive decks in this game's history. Congratulations on releasing this one Farfa, it's a work of art.
True, but I don't see a video like this doing well in terms of views. From a content creators perspective, this video seems more like a passion project than a good successful video.
Farfa: BA circular dumps graff add fire lake when sent to gy
Konami: say less
I love BA so much that I just read the Iliad, odyssey, and Bible to build up a good background to finally tackle the Divine Comedy. Not even joking, i have a hardcover copy waiting on my shelf
11:40 poor man was absolutely shook
When towers got banned i cried for hours because it was my first ever deck and i used it because i like slifer and played it. I started in april 2015.
