      @lewislevits1193 Ashkenazy is a great pianist (and is living just 20 km from where I live). But if you compare the runs of the two pianist in this piece, you will certainly notice that Cho's technique is by far better. So yes, all in all I think Cho's performance is clearly better.

    The set of 24 Preludes as a whole covers the entire range of human emotions - from joyful and full of hope, to melancholic, to romantic, to utter heartbreak and tragedy, to strength and absolute defiance in the face of imminent death (Prelude #24 is the ultimate example of this in my opinion) in which Chopin seems to tell death that it may soon take his body from this Earth... but it will never take his passion, his heart, his soul or his inner strength. This is him raging against the dying of the light and staring death in the eyes with his head held high. Thank you Chopin, for sharing your most vulnerable heart with us, and thank you to the pianists who put their heart and soul into playing his music for us.

    It's very admirable how muscle weak, pale with sunken cheeks maestro Chopin composed this set of Les Préludes Op. 28 while coughing up blood from Tuberculosis in his cold room, frightened by ghosts comming from the villa's walls
    during winter stay in Valldemosa, Spain. He has laid his life for music as his soul was too loving for this world.

@@bryvnxiii4632 Hopefully, but the reason I gave that particular response was because there's this weird racism directed at black people who enjoy and/or play classical music. And considering that they have a Pepe pfp, I suspected it was a dogwhistle remark, because I'm sure the commenter is smart enough to realize I obviously wasn't in an audience from 6 years ago.

    Both Mr. Cho and Mr. Lu change Chopin's score by adding a tonal cluster of CDE at the conclusion, then while holding the C and E play the final two Ds, no doubt to create a louder roar. Apparently this is a new fad.

      @ShadowShinobi108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Exactly, his hands don't even look THAT huge, in comparison to say, Eric Lu's hands. But oddly with Eric's rendition of the piece, you can really see Eric working with the left hand despite his humongous hands, and Seong Jin Cho who has smaller hands makes it look near effortless. Cho is a true great.

      C to G??! That is humongous! But yes I did realize his hands are quite big anyway, because he can play the opening chords of Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2 without arpegiatting them. That was an indication for me that his hands were big already haha. Still, C to G is beyond large.
