This may be Amish country, but this is not an Amish supermarket. Owned by Mennonites. They sell Amish-style foods, but the Amish seldom shop here. You may see women with prayer caps, but they are likely Mennonites--you can tell the difference in that they will wear print design dresses, where Amish will only wear solid colors. Most Mennonites avail themselves of modern food and conveniences--hence you might see them at Goods Store. In fact, I often see them at Walmart. The donuts, popcorn, and most of the other stuff here are mostly purchased by the "English." Also, scrapple is not only an Amish food--it's a Philadelphia favorite.

Goods is also owned by mennonites, there are Amish owned stores all over Lancaster county but they're not as known as the normal tourist places. Most you won't find on Google, you find them mostly by driving around. I do know Solanco Market in Peach Bottom PA is Amish owned. I'm sure there are many more closer to the Strasburg area. There are grill shops or furniture shops as well. There is also Singing Springs Food in Quarryville, that is a grocery store and they also sell food, highly recommend anything with a pretzel. Also if you could go to The Green Dragon Market on a Friday (that's the only day they are open) Hope you get to enjoy some of these recommendations. Or if anyone sees this comment, hope it was helpful.
Shady Maple is ok once in a while but there are plenty of great markets in Lancaster County. Dutch-Way has 4 different locations throught the county. Saubels is great. Schroders is underrated. Stauffers of Kissel Hill has a few locations and is basically a grocery store that you would recognize no matter where you're from. Look up Green Dragon Market/Flea near Ephrata. It's only open on Fridays but worth the trip at least once.

Yeah, darn! We had plans to go eat some scrapple, but one of our water lines froze in our RV and so we decided to drive back home and fix it (probably will be shown in an upcoming video). But that's okay! We plan to drive back through Amish country on our way back down... meaning we will try scrapple then
The hillbilly bacon is really good! If you ever get back , you should try the sweet meat sticks!! Also if you are ever brave enough to try the scrapple (it’s an acquired tast) I recommend slicing it thin, pan frying, and topping with apple butter! I personally love it but some people don’t care for it!! Great video!!
We live in Juniata County you'll have the same aesthetics as Lancaster County. A lot more quieter and friendlier. Plus we have a health food store that can cater to the Amish community
They do grow beautiful vegetables and bake some great goodies but keep in mind that they often use corn syrup, Crisco and food additives and colorings in many of those products.
Scrapple is all the pork scraps..cooked into cornmeal. Once it’s all cooked down, it’s poured into tins to harden when it cools (the way polenta is sold in a roll). I dredge it in flour and fry it well.
30+ yrs ago this store was part of the IGA chain. They also had a dining area that you could get to from the back of the store. You could get a breakfast of pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and a coffee for $2.49. For an extra 50¢ they'd throw in a glass of juice, too. After breakfast you could walk into the grocery store and do your shopping. VERY efficiently run.... They do a lot of business there. All of the food is good, too.
That with the priest is Russian Kvass a fermented drink made with rye bread and aquired taste. Birch beer pop is also popular in Newfoundland as is pineapple pop

Scrapple is similar to goetta here in Cincinnati. Goetta is a mix of ground beef and pork with a pinhead oats and spices while scrapple is a mix of pork parts, cornmeal or flour and spices. Both are considered breakfast meats that are fried when served.
Shady Maple is a fantastic place to shop for the family. I usually pay almost half what I pay at Redner's or Giant for a cart full. The apples may have come from Weaver's Orchard, about 10 mi from Shady Maple - they have about 2-3 dz varieties + THE BEST apple cider. You missed the hard pretzel section of the store; missed the take home prepared foods section; missed the deli counter where they sell scrummy Lebanon baloney; missed the regular meat counter with lots of locally grown beef products, not just the frozen exotics you showed; but you showed the donut section which makes up for many evils. And as you leave there's a stand selling hot soft pretzels and hot dogs that are deelish... Oh, and scrapple should be sliced thick and panfried crisp in bacon fat or butter. It's basically polenta with piggy bits in it. So it gets crisp on the outside, soft inside. Some folks eat it with apple butter, which makes sense. I like ketchup, not too much, usually with some hot sauce. Breakfast food to go with you fried eggs.

I'm Pennsylvania Dutch but am not Amish or Mennonite. Birch beer IS NOT root beer!! They have distinctly different tastes. Birch beer is made from birch tree sap & bark. Root beer is made from sassafras plant vines & roots. I believe Shady Maple brand & Smorgasbord restaurant are owned by Mennonites, though Amish people work in both store & restaurant. When in Amish country, please respect their beliefs & do not film their faces without permission. Mennonite women also wear prayer kapps (white or black caps/bonnets) & may allow pictures to be taken of their faces but usually don't drive horse & buggies. Things made by hand of course cost more because they aren't being mass manufactured by machines in factories.

Shady Maple is a gem! There is a huge buffet right next door (video coming soon) and quite a few stores, each of them with a horse and buggy parking :) . If I lived closed enough, I would go there all the time. It's a great store/area
Amish came from Germany or Dutch. Their religion is as older than this country. It us generational, but, you can join but you have to give up all modern conveniences inside the home. All the food you saw in the store, you have to make from scratch including your clothes of black.
We took a tour of some Amish properties, the video will be released coming soon... they are more modern than most poeple might think! Certainly not to the standards most people are familiar with, but a lot of them have rechargeable batteries and solar panels !

I'm in Ohio and once owned a Dairy Farm. Over the years, we had several Amish employees, and they are extremely hard workers. They are very skilled at building furniture and repairing things. They will not allow you to take their picture. It is not unheard of for an Amish person to park his buggy in town, change clothes and visit bars. A local grocery store employee told me that among all shoplifters, Amish are the worst. I can't verify this. But an Amish family once asked permission to pick cherries from my tree in order to bake a pie. When I got home, every single cherry had been picked from my tree lol.
LOL yeah, we learned some interesting stuff about the Amish in our trip in Pennsylvania. We have more info in upcoming videos but one of the more interesting parts is: The passed a law in Pennsylvania, saying that all vehicles must have windshied wipers, brake lights, and turn signals... including horse and buddy! So, the Amish weren't sure how to proceed. In the end, they decided they were allowed to use batteries to power the electronics inside their buggies-- as long as they didn't recharge their batteries with the power grid from the city. So, they have solar panels on top of their houses! Although, they still don't use zippers... only buttons or snaps. It's interesting to imagine someone with assumably 10s of thousands of dollars of solar panels on their house, but no zippers because that is too modern, lol! I'd be curious to learn more about the Amish, they people we bumped into in the stores were incredible friendly.
That powdered cobbler mix and those jams and sauces are "packaged for Shady Maple Farm Market". Every farm stand I've ever been to in the US has the same assortment, but is labeled for the specific store location. Hate to have to tell you that it's not local produce in those jars.

Update google says it’s from the bark. We used to peel off outer bark. There was an inner green layer you peel. We would just chew on it.

@@MrTrashcan1 I agree with you, True Amish seldom work at commercial venues. The Shady Maple complex is owned by the Weaver family. They purchased a farm in 1960 and hence forth this all evolved. Many confuse Mennonites with Amish. Hey, whatever helps sell. The title of this is misleading. I quit watching a quarter of the way through. Happens a lot and PA natives are aware of the truth.
It is fun to see my favorite supermarket from a visitor’s eyes. We take Shady Maple for granted. Scrapple is delicious. Just slice and fry.
Shady Maple is a gem! There is a huge buffet right next door (video coming soon) and quite a few stores, each of them with a horse and buggy parking :) . If I lived closed enough, I would go there all the time. It's a great store/area

You can eat scrapple raw but I like slices fried crispy with a dab of syrup. I wonder if there was any sassafras over with the birch beer?

Amish came from Germany or Dutch. Their religion is as older than this country. It us generational, but, you can join but you have to give up all modern conveniences inside the home. All the food you saw in the store, you have to make from scratch including your clothes of black.
We took a tour of some Amish properties, the video will be released coming soon... they are more modern than most poeple might think! Certainly not to the standards most people are familiar with, but a lot of them have rechargeable batteries and solar panels !

I have never in mu76 years eaten scrapple but I do believe you slice it and fry it.
The liver scapple, or loaf should be cut into slices and pan seared or fried like sausage. Goes great with eggs or breakfast food.

I'm in Ohio and once owned a Dairy Farm. Over the years, we had several Amish employees, and they are extremely hard workers. They are very skilled at building furniture and repairing things. They will not allow you to take their picture. It is not unheard of for an Amish person to park his buggy in town, change clothes and visit bars. A local grocery store employee told me that among all shoplifters, Amish are the worst. I can't verify this. But an Amish family once asked permission to pick cherries from my tree in order to bake a pie. When I got home, every single cherry had been picked from my tree lol.

LOL yeah, we learned some interesting stuff about the Amish in our trip in Pennsylvania. We have more info in upcoming videos but one of the more interesting parts is: The passed a law in Pennsylvania, saying that all vehicles must have windshied wipers, brake lights, and turn signals... including horse and buddy! So, the Amish weren't sure how to proceed. In the end, they decided they were allowed to use batteries to power the electronics inside their buggies-- as long as they didn't recharge their batteries with the power grid from the city. So, they have solar panels on top of their houses! Although, they still don't use zippers... only buttons or snaps. It's interesting to imagine someone with assumably 10s of thousands of dollars of solar panels on their house, but no zippers because that is too modern, lol!
I'd be curious to learn more about the Amish, they people we bumped into in the stores were incredible friendly.
@@JetLagWarriors For power, they typically use generators powered by propane. You'll see propane tanks on virtually every Amish property.

That powdered cobbler mix and those jams and sauces are "packaged for Shady Maple Farm Market". Every farm stand I've ever been to in the US has the same assortment, but is labeled for the specific store location. Hate to have to tell you that it's not local produce in those jars.
