Deep in the countryside of Kentucky is a thriving Amish and Mennonite world. A place that feels removed from America, where time slows down and things are done traditionally. Join me and non-Amish local Steven Haste who dives us into the local culture and explains why he prefers to live in an Amish/Mennonite community vs. the outside world.

Peter, you are so good at showing what life is like, if there is an award for what you do, you definitely deserve it🏆
@PeterSantenello
Peter, can you do an interview with Eli Yoder ? he is an ex old order amish and helps people to escape from the Amish cult. Greetings from Germany
Can we all talk about how this man is doing the work of bringing people together by humanizing people who would otherwise be over looked? Bravo, Peter! Also, any chance to see Titus is a blessing!

There is no “GOD”
Bible is for “weak”people…..
We are born. We live our lives. We die.
It’s very SIMPLE.
Bible is for childish, weak, immature, hopeless, lazy people.
lol these videos just reaffirm that rightoids are insane!
I love seeing Peter with Titus they have definitely bonded and Peter is all smiles when he’s around him. Titus energy is contagious! I would love to just sit and chat with you both.
Mostly when i had same feelings in life something bad came and destroyed such a relationship.. just saying my experience :))
Same Titus and Peter has a special bond, I love seeing them !
These video stories make you stop what you are doing .. and laugh and cry .. with each individual. Peter is a master at making people feel comfortable .. and letting them tell their story! This was another really good one!

Peter Santenello: Americana at its' best. Cogent storytelling with grace and humility-you're one of a kind -telling the American story as no other!!!! Thank you for your tremendous work! Blessings!
Thank you so much Shiloh :)
You're very welcome. You are such a kind hearted person, ( as we see in your interactions with others) may the Lord continue to bless you and your wife, and the very important work of telling others' stories that give us an insight into the lives of people that engenders an understanding and empathy for others that perhaps are not in our "world" Blessings @@PeterSantenello
You da man!! Sooooooo cool!!! I appreciate your courage and honesty..dude..you are my vote for truth..my heart is open for your mission..ty..xoxo ❤
I really hope that you know your worth Peter! Your illumination on an underrepresented population is life changing. I appreciate the effort and work that goes into what you do!! Just know that the content goes far beyond TH-cam views. It is transcendent encompassing Americana in a way that's not been done before you. Thank you for that.✌🏼
@@PeterSantenello Are you saved from sin and hell?
Do you believe Jesus (ie. God come in human form) paid your penalty for sin in full on the cross?
I have been going there opiate withdrawal and these videos are oddly calming. I am going to owe part of my success to you peter! It can happen to literally anyone that takes that stuff for too long. It is out of ones control. Pray for me! I need it!!
🙏🙏🙏 Let us know how you are doing. Eight plus years sober from alcohol myself.
So proud of you for making the choice for sobriety! Keep us posted on how you are doing. I'll keep you in my prayers.
Hey how are you? I’ve been there 🙏
God bless you. I’ve been there, and it’s rough.
God bless you and keep you. Praying for you tonight.
what a brave and authentic person to speak of his and his family's experience. and truly remarkable that he doesn't badmouth anyone
I don’t know. I wondered if he was justifying himself because he was excommunicated. Blaming the church for teenagers doing things they shouldn’t rather than taking accountability himself.
I live in Morgan County, KY about a hundred miles east of Casey County. When we were hit by a devastating tornado in 2012, our Mennonite neighbors stepped up to help in a major way. I personally had a group of Mennonites show up to help clear my lot of debris so I could rebuild. They also rented heavy equipment and dredged our creek to get the debris out. And they did the same for every neighbor who had damage. They are the best neighbors a person could want.
Ive lived amonsgt a bunch of them in BC Canada and i can agree with you.
People that rush to judge their way of life simply haven't known enough of them well enough.
They want their 8 year old to be quiet in front of a TV, while they are whining about child abuse in some of these communities and cant understand why other countries are doing better lately.
Well the 7 year old in Vietnam is running the cash register at their parents' store, what have you been teaching your child?
Many Morgan county relatives ! Grandparents house right next to that KFC downtown. Hate they put that there.
@willg2324 I know your family. Lol
I’m from West Michigan in an area with lots of Amish and they were always such amazing kind people. They’d help in a heartbeat. And they made the BEST cinnamon rolls and bread, 10/10 amazing people. Theyd come eat at my dad’s little diner and always tip well.
That man, John...so well spoken! You can tell that he is a man that stands on principals, that he is a solid man!
He did an excellent job speaking on the pros & cons/why he left that way of life...all while maintaining a sense of respect for where he comes from.
I really enjoyed listening to your conversation with him!!
Me too!!👍
Kudos for John for standing up for his faith in God.
He might be talking too much about certain things, especially when you could get kicked out of your community for lesser things.
Bless John for protecting his family and his Son your a good man! 😊
@PeterSantenello We need a weekly Titus show. Even as an Orthodox Jew, who rejects the Christian doctrine, I cannot help but be transported to a better place by watching Titus speak, move, act, and believe. He's a Blessing to observe. He is sincere, innocent, and pure. Definitely a mindset to emulate and be envious of. Please create a weekly Titus show. Bless you, Titus. And Peter, you make the world a better place, in a very significant way.
Much respect to John, standing up for his children and standing up against literally everyone he's ever known and everything he was ever taught.
That takes an enormous amount of courage.
He has a very interesting accent as well.
Yep. Pardon the expression but he’s got BIG cajones! lol
@@wrath231yep. A very intriguing Southern accent. I like it also
Rumspringa as I understand it is the time being spoken of. We stayed at a B&B in Amish country Ohio where this was mentioned and explained. I had forgotten about it but as your guests spoke I was reminded of that conversation we had about 8 years ago.
He left a cult
I love the respect Peter shows to all the people he interviews, and love how he allows them simply to share their stories. This is way better than constant interruptions and leading interviewees down a particular route that supports the interviewer’s political or philosophical leanings.
Yeah I love how Peter can in one set of videos get along with Titus and his beliefs and listen to his story and goals in life and then in the next still portray and also critisize Amish societies (which is needed as it is not rosery dreams of old), etc.
Recently enjoyed the worst NY neighbourhood video and the Gary one and it wasn't the usual smear fest.
Peter, you do the best ads for going to the US and going on a roadtrip! I really wanna go there again now :)
Shawn used to be my barber in Corbin. He cut my hair from the time I was 10 until he moved when I was 17. He was the nicest guy and I’ll never forget he gave me a book for a graduation present. I’m glad to see he’s doing well! I’ve been so happy to see all the videos about kentucky lately it’s helped me stop being so homesick
Botschaft means message.
This was really something for John (at the store) to open up like this about a community he has been part of for many years. And he still talks with respect about them. Great video again Peter!
Ř
Wonderful! Johns story was sad but glad he’s doing well now! Love the draft horses! My grandpa had work horses but not a big as draft! I learned to ride the youngest one whose name was Flash! ❤️😀🚙🌳🐗🌏
I have so much respect for John. That took so much courage.
John is a heck of a guy i applaud his courage !
I actually would be worried about retaliation for his personal share in a small community, but supposedly none of them will hear this(?) I actually hope Peter & team follow up with him.
@@benniboop752 "but supposedly none of them will hear this(?)"
John said it himself that many have smart phones even though they are not supposed too, but yeah I didn't think about retaliation.
Oh, they will hear about this, and they will hurt him and his family. This entire putting them on TH-cam thing as a whole will not end well for anyone, even Titus.
@@Dave-jm3zfSo not only will they retaliate, a fair few of them are hypocrites too. How godly of them 😂
@@CC-fi3ppyea, I agree. Let people have their own ways privately. Don’t let the world know others beliefs and lifestyle! As the good lord said, let not the left hand know what the right hand is doing!
Listing to older man in his little store was a blessing. He sounded so pure of heart.
He really did, what a bright spirit
Yes he did Sandy, kinda breaks my heart.
A word about the sponsor Thorum, im in Sweden and my friend actually went to USA to buy wedding rings from them as I remember (they combined it with vacation), and they came home to Sweden and showed me the rings and I can attest 100% that they are masterclass crafted. It's always a pleasure to share knowledge and build understanding.
This is fantastic. Peter's been hitting it out of the park with these series. I'm learning a lot.
I'm in Canada, but there's lots of amish and mennonites in my area. Their sense of community is definitely something to be admired and emulated.
You guys also have Hutterites --- whom I have never been around.

Peter, many of us love these videos and I'm sure it is because the people nowadays miss a functioning community. They miss the non-violent interaction between all people. The amish have it.
it's about what we lost but are we willing to give some things up to get it back
Non-violent, yeah. Except for the corporal punishment the children receive and child abuse permitted by church groups. Did you miss John at the 21 minute mark going forward drop drop some awful truths about these communities? Peter, I’m laid up in bed now for two weeks and maybe more to come. I’ve been catching up on your videos. You have taught me so much!! We live near Greenville, Michigan and just north of us we have a pretty good sized Amish Community. Always see buggies on the roads just north a couple miles north of town. Used to live in Manistique Michigan located up north in the Upper Peninsula and we had Mennonite near us and they had their church and each Season of Lent, the local churches would visit each other and we always enjoyed visiting with the Mennonite families and sing from their hymnals. Your comment is very enlightening. My wife and I try to be very traditional and biblical like Titus, yet people in my general denomination (SDA, which Titus loosely identifies with as well) tell us that we should not dress that way because we would look too much like the Amish and turn people away. I think Titus is distinct in that he is authentic and biblical and yet does not act pushy as some very religious (but not spiritual) people do.
Sounds like you are Agnostic, not Athiest. Glad that your heart and mind are open.
Wouldn't the sermon be in German though? Don't they preach in German? I'm a new learner so I could be wrong
GOD works in many ways. Blessings
These folks, all of them, English, Amish, Mennonite, and others, have it figured out. Community, Community, Community, be good to one another, do good, help your brother or sister out, and peace will befall you and yours. Peter, thank you for shedding light on everyone you do, these are the stories of us, of America, of the America of hope and the dream which can be fulfilled.
In theory that sounds nice. In reality that is not what is happening - Abuse is hidden, it is very hard for the kids to break out and choose another life style, hell they are so isolated they cannot even SEE there is another reality than the one their parents chose and force-chose for them.
You don't own your kids, you caretake and guard them till they are adult and then they must be ready for society, all of it, that is the point of parenting, not to get farming slaves.
Just 8 grades of classes means you are doomed to do hard labor for life with no social movement possible without extreme work ahead of them.
It's a cult that guards their own part of a world, which is fine if its just you but IS child abuse if you deny your children a future with an actual choice for them.
@@barath4545 100%, but that sort of abuse is literally, everywhere in the USA right now and has been for a long time. Tens of thousands of kids across the country, never finish school, because their parents are absent in their duties, but that doesn't mean all is bad here. Take Titus for example, he helps his neighbors, his neighbors help him, the guy with the barn, it was back up in days, here in California, that would take years and hundreds of thousands of dollars and likely, not one neighbor would help in the build. Yes, bad is everywhere, it was mentioned in this video, but, don't stain the entire community on the actions of the few. This is how the majority choose to live, if not, it wouldn't still be a thing. Focusing on the bad is what is getting this country where it is today, there is far more good than bad, but we just love our Doom Loops.
And, to say they are solely relegated to a life of hard labor on an 8th grade education is just baseless and sounds really biased and unthoughtful. Remember the guy mentioning one who became an Engineer? School is meant to give you a base, higher education doesn't necessarily have to be at a college.
@@barath4545there's good and bad and both of you have valid points. I dont think its beneficial to point to the outliers though.
Is getting 6 figures in debt by continuing post secondary educatuon the right way? Lots of people would say no.
If you know what you need to know to be competant by grade 8 and get out and work to help your family, is it really wiser to stay in school and then go to work for 50hrs for a salary to make somebody else's family wealthy?
Not everything needs to feed an industry and if you arent in a large amount of debt, how much money do you really need?
@@barath4545same happens out in the world at least they are trying everyone out there don’t even try

Grew up near the old order Amish in western New York and western Pennsylvania. They are salt of the earth, godly, hard working, and admit to having problems like everyone else. My mindset is becoming more Amish with a small homestead. Excellent video!!!
How much land do you have? I am trying to decide between two properties. One is only a 1/2 acre and the other is 5 acres but I like the area of the 1/2 acre much better.

Peter, this is my favorite TH-cam channel. I enjoy learning about how other people live. One thing I’ve seen in your channel is that most people are generally good people. Bee scientist here, the local raw honey curing allergies thing is not true, sadly. I wish it were haha. Bee honey does contain some pollen in it but that pollen is totally different from the pollen that gives you allergies. Bees collect pollen from plants that are insect pollinated (obv) but the pollen in the air that gives you allergies is from wind pollinated plants.
Steven is a brilliant interviewee! So easy to listen to. Yet another fantastic documentary!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I have a wonderful time doing this video with Peter !!! Thanks again and God Bless
Everybody's human, no matter what face they show to the world. But a person's inherent godliness and value to a God-centered community lies in their actions, not their rules or words. This gentleman John Yoder got a raw deal and I only wish a lifetime of pure love, compassion and happiness for him and his family.
I completely agree with this point of view. Everyone is human, regardless of how they present themselves to the world. But a person's true divinity and value to a God-based community lies in their actions, not in their rules or words. Although this gentleman, John Yoder, was treated unfairly, I wish him and his family a life of pure love, compassion, and happiness.
Peter, I’m so happy your spending time in Kentucky and especially with Titus and all the special people in my home state!❤️🇺🇸
My farm shares a driveway with some Mennonites and we are surrounded by crop fields and I wouldnt have it any other way. Its so peaceful and they are great neighbors to have
Never have to worry about bs and always have a neighbor to count on
I hope this channel continues to come back to Titus. he is the best
You know why I like this channel? Because it's a "feel good" channel. Every video is warming to watch. Thanks Peter.
Another great video, these are the stories of eastern Kentuckians that never get told, as always great job! It seems like Appalachian Kentucky may have taken hold of Peter, there really is something special about this place, and I feel blessed to call it home.
I'm from PA, my bf is from KY, and I love KY. Always look forward to visiting there.
I hope he buys a second home there. Would love to see many more videos from that community. He seems to thrive there.
I completely agree
I think he loves it’s back to basics spirit and deep community ties.
He left SF for a reason
I hope he and his wife move out that way someday
@@timeforchange3786I live near Stephen and Titus....I'd love to have Peter and his wife (and maybe family after the talking to by the elder 😅😅😅) right here in the area.
@@docsavage98 that would definitely be awesome. 😊
These videos at the most compelling argument I've seen to adopt a simpler lifestyle. Peter deserves many awards for his work.
Award winning work! The comfort level that you share with the people you meet is admirable. Thank you for all you do. 😊
Peter -Once again you really made a great Video about something that is really special in America that most folks don't know exist. Steven was the perfect host and a class act-just a true guy!!
Amazing conversion story from John about his family. Wow! Thank-you for sharing John's story with us.
Wow John, what a brave man, and great father. To ex communicate yourself from the only culture u grew up with , for the sake of your children. Good for u standing up for whats right. I hope u lots of feeling. Your kids and wife are lucky people.
Typical of any religious group doing everything they can to control and oppress people.
“The only thing you can’t borrow when I’m not around is my wife” 😂 Brilliant words of wisdom
But his kids aren't off the table.
Thank you Peter!! A lot of people don’t understand or know the Amish lifestyle and you’ve shown a light on it and I give you so many congratulations for even getting a look inside. I hope Titus is happy but based on what you’ve shown, he’s swinging from a tree quite happy.
I hope he goes to Off Grid with Doug and Stacy. They have many Amish friends and gained a lot of knowledge from them. They have been living that way for over a decade.
Maybe Peter can start a homestead full-time living series. I have suggested that to him before. Would love to see how self reliant people on high degree could handle life and resources in different geographical areas around the country.
John is a lovely man. He has achieved so much
I am a documentary junkie, and this is my new favorite channel. Thank you for the work you do.
Peter started this channel long ago..we are still here and absolutely love his content! And we met Titus.. Who can refuse him.
If Peter only covered the Amish, it would be enough. Thanks for everything. Can't get enough of these folks.
Hi Peter, I recently found your channel and have been going through some personal issues at the age of 63. I feel I found you for a reason especially with Titus’s beautiful words and I’ve started to clear my head by watching both you and Titus. Plus tell Titus I subscribed to his channel also. God Bless you and Titus for giving me a simple start at a new life with God🙏🙏
God bless you brother ~ it’s never too late for Jesus to make us brand new
Glad for this convo with John. I commented on a previous video that not everything about Amish is good
Titus is so cool to me! I just adore his humbleness! I really enjoy your Amish videos!!! Peter you are the BEST!!!!!
You can see Peter processing and taking this all in. It's great! 😊
Steven is a real gentleman and great neighbor. Thank you.
Didn’t I see him vape?
Peter I can't tell you how many times my mind has been blown by you just by learning about cultures within our own borders! Love the channel, thanks for doing what you do!
Me too! The rabbit hole is deep here.
This man is so brave and true to his heart, for standing up and protecting his family, against thease crazy things going on within that community!
i really love these authentic documentaries. There is little education about these sorts of things in european schools and of course predjudices that you pick up from browsing the internet and such. But last year i went to america for the first time for 2 months for my work to Ohio and all the people there were super friendly and really enjoyed talking with a bunch of germans. I remember being in a bar with my colleauges and after a while an older gentleman walked over and told us how nice it was to hear the language again as his grandparents were german immigrants and it remided him of his youth. This gives a so much better view of what the people of america is like than what you get from movies, tv and news. This is great Content!
My favorite Saturday show!! Thank for your authentic videos!!
You are so right Peter, Titus’s energy is contagious and being around him, watching him puts a smile on one’s face.
God bless ❤
Seeing Titus in this gave me the biggest smile. Thanks Peter for all you do to give us the content you do. It is so appreciated! ❤
Enjoyed hearing John's story. Brave and strong man in the LORD.
Good family man.
