Thanks for watching everyone. We are live every friday at 5pm PST to 530pm. Today's topic was TMAO and the latest research just published in JASN. Here is the reference: The Gut Microbial Metabolite Trimethylamine N-oxide, Incident Chronic Kidney Disease, and Kidney Function Decline in Two Community-Based Cohorts, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (2024). My doctor hammers me with stopping eating meat and going plant-based. It's not easy, but I'm becoming a believer.

Oh Dr. Hashmi...you are awesome..you inform and obviously are endowed with the much needed compassion. If I find myself becoming tense about my health, not only your wisdom is precious but also simply listening to one of your videos (liike this one) calms and reduces any panic immediately. Between you and your wonderful Michele, who is guiding me through the complexities of diet....I am very grateful for your generous advice.

Astragalus raises chi, and blood pressure. I learned about it in Class for Chinese Herbal Medicine.

I have read studies suggesting that garlic in the diet modifies gut bacteria in a way that lowers TMAO.

It's difficult to totally avoid red meat. And meat in general. But I have been able to limit meat in general to 3x a week. I must since when I do eat red meat I don't feel good. From myself as a 65yo, single kidney, Cr= 1.34. And eating broccoli, or other cruciferous, with every dinner meal, I feel much better. Thanks Doc! Valuable info.

If you don't eat red meat you don't get sick simple as that.

While I appreciate your channel, I think there must be an unrecognized confounding variable in the study referenced. I've always eaten whole foods, but after decades of being prescribed a thiazide diuretic for hypertension, I developed stage 3a CKD. After stopping the diuretic, my GFR gained a few points, but remained stubbornly at the 3a level for @ 15 yrs. I chose to change my mostly plant-based whole foods diet to a whole foods ketogenic diet, eating more fresh beef and lamb than I'd eaten since childhood (I'm a 69 yr old non-diabetic female). After one month, my GFR raised 10 points. After 18 months, my GFR is 70-75. All my markers of inflammation have dropped, homocysteine down from 16 to 8.2, Coronary CT scan score 0, vascular scan shows nothing significant for disease. Lipids fine with triglycerides at 66, HDL at its highest of my lifetime at 51. VLDL reduced from 18 to 13. HBA1c 5.0. Still have hypertension, but it is well controlled through an ACE Inhibitor. And have lost 70lbs over a year. I'm hopeful that as I continue to lose the last 30-40lbs, my hypertension will resolve at least to a point of reducing my Rx. I've been unable to find well conducted studies of those on meat-centric very low carb diets (under 30 total gr) that find TMAO levels elevated or problematic. Anecdotally, there are frequent experiences just like mine in which kidney function greatly improves. If you know of such a study, would you please post it here? Thank you.

I have to eat red meat or my hemoglobin plummets. I cant take the “medical shots” they push so hard to keep it up. Plus the ingredients and side effects smh not worth it. Literally red meat and iron keeps me away from the hospital. I tried vegan and vegetarian, got very ill, definitely not for me at all. Everybody is different, you cannot lump all kidney patients into a box and treat us the same.

Kidney insufficiency or even failure can be silent. So everyone should know if their kidneys are healthy or not. Find out.
