@6:38 The switch fs flip into that like super short mini ramp in the corner was too dope… it’s such a tight quick transition and he snapped all nasty into it
No bullshit, after a tradeshow in LongBeach, there was a warehouse party w a miniramp, tons of pros, people etc. and Tom drops in does a couple 5050s and the lights go out, music goes dead, all you could hear was Penny still skating the ramp in complete darkness. Lights come back on, Tom still skating and the place goes absolutely nuts w cheers. Classic Penny. Unbelievable account to witness
I got a tre flip to fakie in the dark and rain as the lights got turned off at my local park on my insta like 8 years ago. Im not Tom but its a Tom moment that felt hype as fuck
dude that line at Earl Warren is the most insane thing. We grew up skating there and you would be absolutely flying by the second bump from top. His switch ollie on 3rd bump is pretty much unbeleivable to me. I remember it was so hard to make that turn to hit the little stairs because you would be hauling ass.
When measuring the distance with help of the walls and stepped curbs, Tom clears the whole “bank” with his switch ollie. It’s hard to notice, because Tom is so calm, it looks effortless. The legend continues.
Back in 1989 me and my old crew were skating at the bus terminal in Nottingham England and Tom was there doing Mullen tricks on a freestyle board. We didn't know what he would become back then and he didn't say very much. A couple of years later the Nottingham skate shop Rollersnakes released the 720 video and we were like, Shit thats him.
@fried-chicken-448 wait what...Rodney Mullen is god of gods in skateboarding. He created almost every fooking trick. From kickflips to darkslides. Thats not disrespectful. We are praising him. Mullens favorite is Daewon and Gonz.
And Danny Way is Penny’s favourite skater. People forget how sick Tom is on transition. Apparently Tony Hawk once said if Penny did vert full time he’d be out if a job.
And thts the hardiest part to explain to this generation, he was basically joslin doing the 360 flip davis gap. Its wasnt conceivable at the time. The boss kickflip was a mindfck and then joslin 360 flips it.
I totally understand when Rune says Tom is his Gonz, I feel the same way. I even have my own Tom Penny's stories: my first encounter with him was in Paris "Palais de Tokyo". We were a bunch of guys skating on the top plaza (where it's no longer possible to skate) when suddenly a guy coming from nowhere riding quite fast threw a back flip over the big stairs first try (with the columns at the bottom, if you ever skated there, you know how insane that is), then there is a short path of flat ground before a set of 3 stairs that he jumps with a switch flip front. Everything was so smooth it felt like one movement. That was Tom Penny arriving at the spot. After that, he did some nose slides on the hip-level curb and sat down for the rest of the afternoon. After that we were all trying not to look ridiculous while skating 😜
Love this VLOG, All OG 90 skaters on your channel like myself, TOM Penny , Wray, and Cardiel - SICK GOATs for Life till this day. THIS CAHNNEL ROCKS....Your all sick skaters on this VLOG also.
I still remember the feeling I got watching Penny skate the Phillips park in 411. It was the first time seeing someone skate like that, and it was also my first time hearing High and Dry by Radiohead and it blew my mind. Funny because it's just a few seconds, but the impact on me was huge.
I skated a session with Tom and Rune in the OG Radlands by accident one sunny lunchtime in spring 1996 or 97 on a work day. IDNGAF who they were,I knew who they were but I was just a stoned, hungry, unemployed 22 year old. Tom's runs on the street course were like Rune said "he didn't put any thought into it", he just flowed and he landed everything first time, nothing was forced, always naturally flowing, no harsh abrupt sounds to his skating it was so on point.
Honestly this show is awesome bringing back so many child hood memories!! If there any way to support this show tell me; I heard youtube did some demonetizing shi t so if there is any way I can contribute to keep this show going for the younger heads and me lol hit me up in comments
Ordered the original issue of the Tom penny love shroom board from ccs mag at the height of flip. Shit was on back order for 6 plus weeks 😵💫 but once I got that thing I felt like a million dollars skating around the block.
Penny was a reason I started skating fury trucks, I also had a pair of his signature flip wheels. the ones with the shroom in the middle of the tread, and they were clear so you could only see the shrooms if you picked up the board and looked at the wheel.
Stuff just wasnt filmed as much in 90s. Usually u would have to arrange with guy who had a video camera. They were expensive, as were wide angle lenses. Ive skated with well known uk skaters as well as Americans and Europeans. Not often was there a filmer. We had photographer usually, but filming not so much. Meaning people like Tom did absolutely insane, unbelievable, dangerous tricks, just for the fun of it.
I remember seeing these guys they ripped so hard Curtis McGann came and stayed at my apartment during the KIDS MOVIE era. He was so dope. Another amazing UK skater so bummed when he broke his ankle at Walemburg. This was pre Penny era but it lay the foundation I think for guys like Tom and other UK RIPPERS.
I read somewhere in the comments here someone saying they seen Tom as a child doing freestyle tricks on a freestyle board. That's all I need to hear, I'm ordering a freestyle set up.
Yep every park and every town had a penny impersonator haha, some kid or guy who wear exactly what Penny wore. For some reason there was only one at each park haha
I believe Phillip's skatepark in Dallas was called rapid revolutions. That place was insane! Tom Penny, one of the most naturally gifted skaters ever. Looked like he was just cruising, until he did something nbd.
as an American grom thru those years, it was always 'Did yah see Geoffs bs smith down the whatever?" or "Did yah see Pennys next legend." but Rune was not left behind in our stories, fluid on the pipe!
Met him just before he was sponsored by a tiny shop in Liverpool. He came down to Llandudno a little Welsh town and he was eyeing up a grass bank at the time and flipped it. It was cool hanging out with him but he was just a great sk8er then before he went nuclear.
tom penny is one of those raw talent guys and i don't mean he doesn't put in the work and hasn't put in the work it's just so much smoother and cleaner than everyone else....what was that bank wth the chain on top? that was a wild session too. he basically landed every trick first try and that was that for the spot lol. according to legend at least lol
UK skaters during the 90's only had VHS videos of mainly american skaters to reference, no internet and so we automatically thought that it only took a couple of attempts to make a trick as thats what the videos only showed and hence why Tom skated the way he did + add in bad weather. now day's you can watch a clip on TH-cam and they will show you a 100 attempts before the make.
I suggest you to organise a live interview with face cam him where ever he be will answer by positive, is smart and understand and knows people would love to here him.
Tom is an ideal example of “flow state”. The guy could just get himself to a place where he could exercise his talent and skill at his highest potential.
funny that being a skateboarder at that time it would be hard to tell if someone filmed tricks in the same outfit because people changed their clothes every other day ;)
Flip nowadays is just a joke 😂,if one day they kick out Tom(wich obviously will never happen)the brand is done, only Tom tepresents Flip well, the other riders are clowns without attitude 😂
One time in glasgow central, i couldnt believe my eyes. Tom penny comes flying round the corner ready to hit this 8 stair, man done a backside 360 big spin fakie frontside crook nollie heel bones benihanna half cab hurricane. was incredible
the guys a great skateboarder but i think the fawning over him is a little bit excessive, as alot of great skateboarders back then like willy santos, rick mcrank etc get forgotten and undermined when they were just as good
"...when they were just as good". They weren't though, were they? Penny was on another planet at this time. There's a reason why all his peers talk him up.
No one has forgotten those two, mcrank still out skating and ripping super hard but he was quite a bit after peak Penny. When Penny came out early to mid ninties no one was really catching their flip tricks. His style was so far ahead at the time it is really hard to comprehend these days
I love how all the pros have Penny stories 😂
@6:38 The switch fs flip into that like super short mini ramp in the corner was too dope… it’s such a tight quick transition and he snapped all nasty into it
might be my favorite trick of all time, whoopsie daisied that mf'er
Please get Tom Penny on the nine club 🙏🏼 🙏🏼 🙏🏼
That'd be sick, but considering how much he avoids any kind of publicity, I doubt he'd come.
He would need subtitles, too. I don't think they can do that
@@scottlopez9089 penny will never do a interview just like the banksy
Sad but true
Probably get da gonz before you get penny
I’m 40 now. I skated from 94-2002
Tom penny was my idol. Did all I could to skate like him.
He was like this magical guy.
Same. He was epic. Still one of the best to have done it ever. And he’s still at it now. Cannot be easy on the body at nearly 50 years old.
I skated with him in 88. He was amazing then. I'm 50 now. I'm glad I was there to be at the start of what he did
I love how all Tom stories start off with "and for some reason Tom was there" Dude is such a mystery for real.
Tom Penny is so casual. What a legend
The most beautiful switch frontside flip of all time.
Rune is such a legend in his own right but so humble. Much respect, to my personal fave vert skater.

Legend goes the lights go back on right in the middle of Penny flying a fs flip.
I got a tre flip to fakie in the dark and rain as the lights got turned off at my local park on my insta like 8 years ago. Im not Tom but its a Tom moment that felt hype as fuck
If you're going to tell someone else's story, at least don't fumble the punchline.
I skated with tom in 88 in Leamington England. He was a different level. We were all kids but he had talent beyond anything
dude that line at Earl Warren is the most insane thing. We grew up skating there and you would be absolutely flying by the second bump from top. Tom on the 9club 🤯🤯🤗💖
I remember back in 95 i seen Tom Penny at the skate park of Tampa for a flip demo, fs kickflip the pyramid with a broken ankle
Penny broke his ankle in 95?
Who had the story about Penny skating a mini ramp, and the lights cut out momentarily - in which time he landed a frontside flip in the dark
Yeah i remember that one. Hilarious XD
Rune has always been totally rad!
Saw him back in the 90s in Essen, Germany at a Miniramp Show. His skating was out of this world.
Best of 411 volume 2
