    ▷ About Paul:
Paul Rodriguez, also known as “P-Rod” was recognized as a prodigy at the young age of 14, only two years after he started skating. His consistency, effortless style and persistence on his board led Paul to travel far from his home town of Northridge, CA to the City Streets around the world as a part of the legendary City Stars team. His passion for skating and filming with his friends led to his breakout part in Logic 6 in 2000, Street Cinema in 2001 and landed him Rookie of the Year in 2002 for his part in Tranworld’s video production “In Bloom.” He turned pro later that year.
Paul bought his first skateboard at the age of 12. When he’s not skateboarding, Paul enjoys studying the lives of influential individuals, including his favorites such as Alexander the Great and Bruce Lee.
Paul currently lives in Los Angeles.

Tom Penny is the Bill Brasky of skateboarding. But couldn't be more well deserved for a more humble guy. I feel proud because I only needed to see a minute or 2 of him on an old 411 vhs in the late 90s to know he was the king of swag. Now, 25 odd years later, I notice everyone has kind of come around to seeing what I saw and I find it gratifying.

That part is an all-time great video part I'm not even kidding. The technical tricks that went down are basically the same we see today. Although today there's a higher level of difficulty and gap size whatever, but it's still an unbelievable selection of tricks.

At a trade show after party in Long Beach, tons of pros partying at a warehouse with a mini ramp. Everyone is partying, skating, Tom drops into the mini ramp, does a fifty fifty, five-o grind on the next wall and the power goes out! Pitch black darkness, everyone was raging so hard, then the place gets silent. All you can hear is Tom skating the ramp in the dark. Everyone realizes this and goes fucking crazy!!! Lights come back on as he's popping into the deck. It was so fucking amazing. Everyone was going nuts! And yes, the deepest voice in skating

I met Tom Penny in a bar in Barcelona. He, and Ben Grove (an absolute British legend, in his own right) were on a stag do and bumped into them in Temple bar just off Las Ramblas. It was summer 2012, I was 23, single and life couldn’t have been better. Meeting Tom and Ben was the icing on the cake that year. Make the most of your youth folks.

I love hearing Tom Penny stories. I feel like he is the most legendary skateboarder in the truest sense of the word, in that he's almost like a mythical creature, as Paul said. He's different from a lot of the other guys who are often referred to as legends (all of whom have deserved the accolades), like Rodriguez, Koston, Ladd etc, who stand at the forefront of skateboarding and work almost as it's public face. Ladd less so nowadays, but still, it's not hard to come by PJ Ladd footage. Mind you, skateboarding couldn't grow if every top pro acted like Penny, because there'd be no publicity and no growth. But since it's basically just Penny who appears once in a blue moon to blow everyone's minds, and then disappears, it makes for a perfect legend.
And I don't think he ever wanted to make himself a mythical figure. It always felt like he was just a supremely talented guy, who was good and passionate enough to turn skateboarding into a livelihood, but who also didn't want to deal with the publicity, the interviews, the autograph signings and whatnot that came with the territory. So he carved his own path. Love to Penny and to Rodriguez, one of the most humble, true to life legends in the game.

I loved this. Growing up , i was lucky enough to meet Miles Silvas in the last street league in jersey. I mightve been 14-15 at the time. I was studying every single one of his parts instead of paying attention in class. When i got the chance to approach him, the only words that i was able to think of to say was “ switch heel back tail”. He was like “ what about it?” I thought that was the most g shit. I couldnt even ask how he was doing LIKE I WANTED TO because his response DEADASS MADE ME shake my head and WALK AWAY😂😂😂 I LET HIM KNOW i was blown away at that ender! His adidas part is gold that will only apreciate with time. Not for nothing but the early 2010’s were an AMAZING time to be a skateboarder. I could count all the pros that ran the game with my fingers (this was when you could keep up with the industry, but now, there are waaay too many good skaters i dont know where to begin). Safe to say Miles is one of my favorites haha

I used to watch his Life In the Fast Lane part over and over and tried to emulate his style. Begged my step dad to take me to HB park just to skate the spot he skated and hoped he'd be there. Tom was a mythical figure at that point. You waited for any small clip of him to come out. Hoped he'd come back to the US and blow everyone's minds again. Funny to think you and your friends were having the same experience as me and mine like 30-40 min across town. Lol I guess a lot of us were at the time.

OMG, he totally is. I'm sure he got into position early and him being next to Penny is no accident. Quite recently, I saw footage of Paul at MACBA and he was standing beside Tom Penny, and he just looked into the camera with wide eyes and kind of gestures to his side that he's standing beside Tom Penny. He still geeks out over him and that's adorable considering Paul is one of the all time greats whose accomplishments dwarf anything Tom could even fathom (other than being a sasquatch). The only two skaters I see now that have the presence of penny is Andy Anderson and aurelian as they flow super natural and skate everything with ease. I remember getting into skating in 1999 and Tom penny was one of the unicorns but I was lucky to get meet a lot of UK pros and also meet the whole es team including rodriguez.

Paul, I got your autograph (and Mikey's) on a t-shirt at the 2001 Slam City Jam. You guys were giggling and seemed embarrassed a bit, probably because you didn't think anyone would recognize you, but I watched your runs and practice and knew you guys were going to do big things.

Yah I was a Penny fan since I seen him in that 411vm Flip Industry. Best style ever. We blazed a J with him at a demo at C&C Ride Shop in Riverside in mid 90’s at a demo. And weed was fully illegal then lol he musta been like 19-20 then. He barely tried just a few fs flips on flat and a few qp stalls. No phone cameras then so it’s all in my mind. Cool guy. I wasn’t that intimidated by him then cuz he only like 19 then and we were like 14. Idk if he was as big then. Muska was there as well. Janky demo but good pros. Like the chocolate tour when they roll up and it’s like some bujee ass setup and they piece out with the $$ haha some backyard lookin ramps and boxes. I’m sure you endured those.
Your story is epic gettin to see him shred live in his prime. That’s really cool. I woulda fanned out way harder if I was on the same team. That’s more pressure to live up to his standards.
I think I was felt that way when I met you. I wish I coulda been funnier or showed my personality more. I was a lil star struck after studying you since I had the TWS switch flip 13. That was a very impactful cover on us growing up. Seeing a kid that young going that tech and big made us believe we could be that good.
I wanted to share my sk8 clips with you and a box I co-designed for a Tony Hawk fundraiser with ARC. I had cool stories about filming Tre Williams and Samaria back in the day and skating with them. I kinda blanked tbh I just was happy to meet you. Appreciate you being humble guy and being supportive of everyone’s street dreams. Thanks for the vids over the yrs and hope to see you sk8 in person 1 of these daze homie 🛹🤙🏽

Just to note I owned 5 pairs of Penny Supra’s black gum sole. It’s funny they changed it from a puffy shoe to a slimmer shoe over a yr or so. I liked the puffier more. It has a nice elastic strap under tongue so no need to lace them tight. Yah I shredded them to nothing and the sole wore too thin. That’s the #1 way shoes go is when the sole goes too thin. Your socks peeking through. Ha

Here’s another Penny revelation. He’s known for the tan shoes and fits bro. Ok think about the fact a penny is a bronze or tan color. And factor penny royal tea ☕️ an English staple and a badass Nirvana song is a brown / tan color. It’s not a coincidence. Legends like that are mysterious and have so much symbolism. Facts 💯

Yo Prod I got a crazy story about meeting you at the DC shoe video premiere in LA in the early 2000’s. Just watched this video and it reminded me of meeting you and the crazy story behind how I got into the premiere that night!
